Chapter 2 - The Great Valley Adventure

It has been about a week since Aero became the Great Valley Guardian. The first few days of being guardian felt strange to Aero as some of the residents of the Great Valley didn't know that there was a Guardian of the Valley in the first place. But even with these mixed feelings from the residents, Aero had done a good job as guardian so far. The first day was patrolling on the edge; Aero had plently of food on him, but had to occasionally come down for water. As for the patrolling, Aero didn't see any sharpteeth.

The following two days were checking within the valley to see if any of the dinosaurs needed help, like when he had to prove to them that he was guardian material. There wasn't any major catastrophies to be dealt with and not many dinosaurs needed help. Aero wondered if the lack of help was a side effect that the dinosaurs still didn't trust him. If so, Aero wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. He already knew of one dinosaur that didn't trust him, but then again, that dinosaur probably doesn't trust anyone but himself. Even with the lack of help from the residents, Aero was happy to help.

Then the next day was another day of patrolling. It was quiet most of the day, however he did find a sharptooth. A lone fastbiter. Aero was about to take care of it by chasing it away, but it seemed the fastbiter was only just passing through and did not notice Aero at all. Seeing that the fastbiter was no threat, he decided to leave it be unless the fastbiter changes course and tries to attack him. Aero smiled at the sight due to the fact that what he saw was his first sharptooth sighting and what a sight it was.

After spending the next day looking after the residents, Aero decided to explore for the last two days of the week. He wanted to know more about the area he was in, in both the Great Valley and the Mysterious Beyond. There wasn't much to explore in the Great Valley as he explored most of it during his days he helped the residents. So he spend most of the first day of exploring in the Mysterious Beyond and fully on the second day of exploring.

Throughout his exploration, there was a few sites to see. Like one of them was a tall mountain that looked like a longneck or a rock formation that looked like a threehorn. Aero recognised the threehorn-looking rock as Threehorn Peak, where the kids found him inside the Stone of Cold Fire.

But it wasn't just seeing the sights for Aero, he was looking for anything useful that could help with rescuing dinosaurs or any tools that can help him with survival. He already had a couple of sharp stones to make a fire if needed, but he would appreciate other objects that can help him with preparing food or to climb high ledges. Aero managed to find a strong thick vine hanging from a tree and luckily for him, it was a very long one. Aero decided after finding this vine, he went to look for more and he managed to salvage about five strong looking vines. With this collection, Aero returned home and decided to get a good night's sleep.

Aero must have been more tired than he thought as a call for help woke him up. Aero shot up from his sleeping position and grabbed one of the shorter vines, before leaving his cave. Aero didn't use his super speed, but he ran as quick as he could to where he heard the call for help. As he got closer, it was a group of dinosaurs gathered around a tall patch of grass. The residents who were kind enough to give some information on the Great Valley told him the area he was approaching was called the Sheltering Grass.

Aero reached to where the adult dinosaurs were and got through any gaps he could see. When there was a clearing, he saw who was crying for help. It was Littlefoot and the gang, except for Petrie who was flying above them, looking at them with concern. That is, until he saw Aero. "Aero! We need help!" Aero, alarmed by the fact that Littlefoot and his friends were in trouble, he saw what the problem was. Quicksand. 'Not good... what do I do?! What do I do?!' Aero's heart was racing, he had never dealt with quicksand in his life, however, he did know some facts about quicksand. So he took these into consideration and help them out.

"Guys! You need to stop moving, you'll sink faster if you move!" Even when he was shouting, the group either couldn't hear him or they didn't know Aero said something. Aero sighed, but helped them anyway. He threw the vine to the dinosaur that was closest, that being Spike. "Bite this, Spike!" It was pretty close, just enough to reach it and when Spike bit it, Aero pulled as hard as he can. A few seconds from pulling and it snapped instantly, making the vine unusable for this situation.

"No!" Seeing the vine was too short for the group to reach, Aero retracted it. "What do I do now?" Aero looked around him with panic as he felt that he was running out of options. He couldn't push them out as then he would be trapped too and there would probably be a small percentage that all of the dinosaurs would be free. Then, it felt like a miracle as he saw a dinosaur's tail dip into the quicksand, just as the group was about to sink further.

Aero looked up to see who was the one that dipped their tail and as he saw who it was, he was both relieved and a little surprised. "Gramps! Thank goodness you made it!" Gramps listened, but kept an eye on the quicksand. He felt something and pulled his tail up like a industrial crane. There they all were, covered in mud, but okay. Gramps gently put them down on the ground, just outside the rest of the grown-ups. Aero was so happy to see them as he ran up to them and hugged them, so worried for their safety.

"Guys! You're okay!" The group were shivering a bit, but replied, "Aero!" Grandpa Longneck looked at Aero from a distance, curious as to what happened. He came close to Aero and the gang and asked, "Littlefoot, did you and your friends play in the Sheltering Grass?" Littlefoot felt ashamed as his head was lowered. "Yes Grandpa..." Even his friends felt bad for what happened. Grandpa Longneck looked at Aero and asked, "And what about you Aero? What happened?" Aero looked at Littlefoot and the gang, then at Gramps. "I only got here to see them in the sinking sand, calling for help. That call for help woke me up, ran here as fast as I could and used this vine..." Aero showed the broken, shorter vine to Grandpa Longneck. "...to pull them out".

Aero in his frustration, threw the vine as hard as he could to the ground. "But that didn't work!" Aero looked down, ashamed. "It snapped and...I wasn't able to save them". Aero closed his eyes. "Maybe I'm not guardian material after all". Aero was both upset and ashamed. He was right. The residents still didn't trust him and after seeing what happened today, they'll definately won't trust him now. Aero sighed. "If you need me, I'll be in my cave". Aero picked up the vine and left it sitting on his shoulder as he walked away from everyone. Littlefoot and the gang called out. "Aero!" But a tail stopped all five of them as Grandpa Longneck used his tail as a barricade. He glared at the children, knowing that they were in big trouble.

Many hours have passed and even if he wasn't crying, Aero was clearly upset. He didn't eat anything and sometimes when he felt fustrated, he would rip the vine he used earlier into many pieces until there was only a few leaves left. Aero sat in the middle of his cave, with the boulder blocking the only way in and out. He didn't want to talk to anyone, nor help anyone for that matter. He failed them. He couldn't even save a group of children without risking himself in the process. He didn't want to talk to the grown-ups either as they would probably say remarks like, 'He doesn't belong in the valley!' or 'We're not safe around him anymore!' Aero burried his face with his arms in silence. That is until a voice asked a question.

"Aero? Are you in there?" Aero uncovered his face a little, identifying who asked the question. 'Gramps? What's he doing here?' Aero sighed and added in his thoughts, 'Probably here to cheer me up after my mistake, well it won't work'. The voice which Aero identified as Grandpa Longneck's voice called once again. "I want to talk to you, can I come in?" Aero closed his eyes, still upset about the previous events and he felt like he didn't want to say a word. The front boulder started to move out of the way as Grandpa Longneck used his head to push it.

As the boulder moved enough away so that the hole was fully exposed, Grandpa Longneck looked at it to see if his head could fit inside. It was too small for his whole head, so he backed his head away enough so Aero could see his face. "Aero, what happened earlier was not your fault". Aero lifted his head a little to see Grandpa Longneck's face. "But it was! You saw what happened out there! I couldn't even save your own grandson from the sinking sand!"

"Even guardians make mistakes Aero, don't be afraid of asking for a little help from one us". Aero seemed a little enlightened by Grandpa Longneck's words, but something concerned him. "But, what if the dinosaurs I ask for help don't trust me? What then?" Grandpa Longneck thought hard on his answer before answering the question. "Then you have to make sure they trust you first before something like today happens... you are very wise and have taken responsibilities so soon in your guardian role, try not to rush and do heroic things alone, we are all strong together".

Aero smiled and seemed to be in a brighter mood. "Yeah... you're right Gramps. My mind was too clouded to see what was right in front of me, there are bigger, stronger dinosaurs out there that could have easily did what you did today. Wow, I guess all I needed was a pep-talk from the hero today". Aero nodded. "Thanks Gramps, I better eat something and go to sleep tonight. I'll try not so hard next time". Grandpa Longneck nodded his head. "Good night Aero and please, don't feel sad about today. I'll see you tomorrow". Grandpa Longneck raised his head and made his way towards his nest.

Aero looked at the boulder, thinking he should put it back the way it was, but he decided against it. The reason he had it closed in the first place was to hide how upset he was. But after having that talk with Grandpa Longneck, deep down, he knew the elderly longneck was right. He wasn't alone in this place and if they trusted him well enough to be a part of the herd, he can always ask for help. Of course there would be some dinosaurs out there that would refuse to help him, but slowly, they'll understand.

After a night of food and chilling around in his cave, Aero went to a peaceful sleep, happy to have the previous events removed from his mind. When he awoke to the sound of the dinosaurs chatting away on how good the morning was, he did his daily routine of washing his face by the waterfall that was close to his cave and grabbed a few treestars to eat the way he liked them. Washed and scrunched up into a ball. Once he ate a few of them, he did what he usually does when on patrol. Aero strolled the biggest areas of the valley and watched the dinosaurs from a distance. He wanted to give them privacy and knowing they don't fully trust him yet, he didn't want to be near them in case they tried anything.

The one thing that did catch his eye however was that there was something hiding in the bushes. Normally, some dinosaurs wouldn't see what Aero was seeing, but with his keen eye for detail, Aero spotted this. Aero walked closer to the bushes and the image got closer. That was then that he heard familiar voices. "If Ducky's egg was there the whole time, who's egg is this?" Aero tilted his head a little. 'Littlefoot?' Aero waited for more voices. "Maybe bad guys steal from other nest". Aero wondered, 'Petrie? The whole gang is here?' Aero decided waiting wasn't enough. Aero walked closer to what he thought was the gang and it turns out that it was true, as all four dinosaurs and flyer were present.

"Okay, guys. What's going on?" They seemed surprised as they jumped, Littlefoot was the first to say. "Aero! Good morning!" All the other waved and said the same thing as Littlefoot did. Aero eyed them all suspiciously, seeing that they looked like they were hiding something. Probably something big. "Alright you guys, what are you all hiding? What's behind you?" They were all heistating, refusing to move. Aero knew that look very well, he did the same thing when he was younger and he got caught on doing something bad in the classroom. "Look, I won't tell the grown ups, just show me".

Littlefoot looked at the gang seeing that it was pointless to resist, Aero saw right through them. Everyone walked to the side seeing what was blocking Aero's view. It was an egg sitting on a patch of long grass. Aero went close to inspect it, it was very light violet in colour with small light brown spots and the spots were partially faded. The egg was a bit bigger than Ducky was and Aero wanted to gently touch it, but at the last second decided against it. He turned to the gang. "Tell me the story of what happened. All of it".

And it was then that the gang explained what had happened. They explained that they were both upset and annoyed at the grown ups saving them and that wanted to prove themselves that they could look after themselves. At this point of the story, Aero reflected back on what Grandpa Longneck said to him yesterday, it seemed that he wasn't the only one who felt that way. The gang then said how there was two egg thieves stealing an egg from Ducky's nest and they followed those thieves to the Mysterious Beyond. However, a rock slide created a hole on the wall of the Great Valley, seperating the group and the thieves. The land slide made the group think the egg was gone. However, they found the egg Aero saw and brought the egg back to the nest, but were surprised that the egg was there.

Aero nodded, understanding what was going on. The gang had brought a different egg back, but it's not the one they thought it was. "I see now. So you have no idea who's egg that is". They all nodded. "Well, like I said. I wo-" Aero was about to say to the gang that he wouldn't tell the grown-ups about this, but he heard a noise coming from the egg.

Aero turned sharply to it and saw faint cracks on it. Everyone ran close to it and watched wondering what dinosaur would come out. Aero was the most excited as he had never seen a dinosaur hatched from an egg before. The cracks were getting darker and deeper and popping out first was two big feet with three toes on each foot. The only part of the egg that remained still was on top of the dinosaur's head. With a small grunt, the dinosaur arched its head back, removing the egg shell. The dinosaur was dark purple with a light violet underbelly. It had two small arms, two big feet that were a little smaller than its head. Its head was quite sqaure and angular and it had dark red eyes.

"It's a uh..." Littlefoot was trying to guess what kind of dinosaur it was, but as it opened its mouth, the gang got their answer. "A sharptooth!" The whole gang except for Aero ran away from the hatchling, scared that it was going to eat them. Aero looked back at the hatchling as it closed its mouth a little and looked at Aero curious. Aero was very surprised at what just happened, not only have the gang brought an unknown egg with them, but for it to be a sharptooth egg of all things.

Aero studied the sharptooth closely, for a hatchling, it seemed pretty cute. 'Let's see, small arms, big feet, head size can't make this a small sharptooth... maybe a-' Aero sudden realisation got him to say out loud, "A T-Rex?!" Aero took a couple of steps back, afraid of what it could do. But he had to think things over for a minute, this sharptooth was just a baby, the only thing it could do was a small bite. Nothing that could fatally wound or kill him. The sort of damage this sharptooth could do can be healed easily. The sharptooth looked left out, it wanted to be with someone. Aero, seeing that he wasn't in much danger, went close to the sharptooth. It smiled and used one of its arms to pat Aero's face.

"Facinating". That was Aero could say. It was strange for Aero as he haven't been this close to a carnivore before and he should be scared out of his wits. But this was a helpless baby, just a new lifeform learning everything around it. The sharptooth then used its hand muscles to grab some of Aero's fur. 'Please don't pull it, please don't pull it...' The sharptooth did pull a part of Aero's fur, but it did this slowly instead of a quick violent tug.

It let go as it heard rustling from behind the two, then a voice said, "Aww, he doesn't seem so dangerous". Aero turned to see Littlefoot coming closer. Aero questioned, "He? How do you know its a boy?" Littlefoot smiled and answered, "Well, look at him". Aero had another look at the sharptooth. He couldn't really see it very well, but he could guess that it was male from the deep vibrant colours, compared to a dinosaur with paler colours. "Huh, I guess so".

An insect that looked like a dragonfly buzzed near them and the sharptooth seeing it as its prey, started to chomp at it. "Hey, we should give him a name". There was a couple of misses until on the third bite, the insect chunched in its mouth. "I know, I'll call you Chomper". Aero giggled at little. "Very original, but I like it. Suits him". The newly-named sharptooth called Chomper was enjoying his meal. "Gee, I know what sharptooth like to eat. But maybe I can teach him how to eat green food like us!" Aero looked at Littlefoot, feeling a bit uneasy. "I don't know Littlefoot, there's probably a good reason why sharpteeth can't eat green food".

Aero knew that carnivores can get sick if not given the right type of food. Littlefoot didn't seem to be listening as he grabbed a branch with his mouth that had a few treestars attached. "Here, try some!" Chomper bit the branch and chewed it a little, but not liking the taste of it, he spat it out. Littlefoot sighed. "This is gonna be a lot harder than I thought. Maybe I should talk to my grandparents about this". Aero felt like this was a good idea, but he had something on his mind.

"Littlefoot, in that story of yours, did you say that a part of the wall fell during that landslide?" Littlefoot nodded. "Then this is what we'll do. You go talk to your grandparents and keep an eye on Chomper. I need to go and see how bad that wall looks and make sure no other sharpteeth got through". Aero looked at Chomper and added, "We can't let the grown-ups know about him, they could do some horrible things to him if we're not careful. You think you can do that?"

"Okay Aero. I'll go see my grandparents..." Littlefoot turned around and added to himself, "...if my grandparents find out, they'll kill me". Aero looked back at Chomper as he saw a group of butterflies and wanted to chomp at them too. 'I better go and see that wall then, if it's a big job, then I'll have to go find help'.

So from remembering the details of Littlefoot's story, Aero looked for the gap the gang walked through. Using points of interest in the story, he managed to find the gap within a few hours and when he saw the gap, he opened his mouth wide. "Yeah, I'm definitely gonna need some help with this one. What to do..." The hole was wide enough for big full grown sharpteeth to enter through, maybe even a few fastbiters too. He had to tell someone about this, he couldn't leave the valley exposed like this, but he also couldn't tell them about Chomper either. After some thought, he decided to go for the first option.

Aero turned around, about to say something to the grown-ups, but he heard a roar coming from the other side of the gap. Wanting to know who made the roar, Aero walked towards the gap and whatever made the roar was getting closer. They got close enough to be next to each other and Aero looked up at who it was. It was two sharpteeth, one was a mustard yellow looking one with red eyes and the other looked like Chomper if he was older, except that its eyes were dark grey.

The two sharpteeth walked further, but Aero shouted out, "Wait!" It seemed the sharpteeth understood what Aero shouted out as they stopped walking and were in front of Aero. They both looked down at seeing what was blocking their way and growled at Aero for making them stop. "What do you two want?" The communication between Aero and the sharpteeth was hard it was mostly growls and it wasn't getting anywhere. They were about to move again, but Aero kept blocking them. "Wait, I got it!" Aero ran towards a lone stick on the ground and picked it up. He went back to his original spot and put his thoughts onto drawing.

'If what I think is true, then these sharpteeth are looking for Chomper. I just need to confirm it by drawing it to them'. Aero got his stick and using it as a pencil, he drew the two sharpteeth in a very simple rough sketch. Aero got a bit nervous as the growls from the sharpteeth grew louder, probably for wasting their time on their mission, whatever it was. Aero quickened the pace a little, but wasn't shaking when making his drawings. Aero drew next to the sharpteeth a oval shape shaped like an egg and poked it couple of times to make the egg look like it had spots.

The growling ceased and Aero took a few steps back from the drawings, looking at the two sharpteeth. It was hard to tell for Aero, but they both looked sad and the yellow looking one lowered its head to see the drawings. Its head was close to the egg drawing and it sniffed on it. As air blew out of its nose, making dirt blow away from the drawing, Aero's thought was right.

"You two are after your baby, which means you're looking for Chomper. You're Chomper's parents". The sharpteeth were getting impatient as they roared, then walked around Aero and ran towards the valley. Aero in frustration pounded his fist onto the ground. 'Just great, I just let two sharpteeth into the valley and once more, they are in distress on finding their newborn son'. Aero went back up and looked at the valley. "I gotta stop this. I need to find Chomper".

Not having much leads, Aero decided to follow Chomper's parents. Aero was thinking that maybe they can find their son through scents. But as the Great Valley guardian, he was looking around making sure that any residents nearby won't panic. After a few minutes seaching, some of the residents saw the sharpteeth and screamed. Aero sighed. 'It's best not to explain it and just get these guys out as soon as possible'.

It seemed that Chomper's parents have found something as they put their heads through some bushes. Aero went through the bushes and saw the parents sniffing at the leftover egg shell pieces of Chomper's egg. The yellow looking sharptooth out of the two made a sound like it was worried. 'I guess that's Chomper's mother... makes sense'. Aero put his hand on the yellow sharptooth's right leg and added, "Don't worry you two, we'll find him".

After seeing the eggshells of Chomper's egg, the two sharpteeth went close to one of the volcanoes that was close to the wall. As they got close, they heard faint voices. The purple sharptooth went closer and roared. Aero curious at what the sharptooth found to make it roar, went next to it and saw Littlefoot, Chomper and two other dinosaurs with them. The two dinosaurs ran away as the two sharpteeth went close. Littlefoot was so scared of them that he was shaking and he didn't know that Aero was among them. Chomper looked up and saw the sharpteeth.

He sqeaked at them and the sharpteeth, hearing the sqeaks stopped roaring and went to see Chomper. When the yellow sharptooth had its head low enough, Chomper made more sqeaks that make it sound like he was happy to see them. Thinking of this as a danger, Littlefoot stopped shaking from fear, looked at Chomper and shouted, "No! Don't! It's dangerous!" Chomper ignored him and climbed on top of the yellow sharptooth's head. Chomper hugged the best he could despite his size, but the sharpteeth touched heads as a way of hugging their child.

Littlefoot looked at the family of sharpteeth and was both relieved and happy for Chomper. "Hey, they must be his momma and papa". Aero added in, "Yeah, I found that out a while ago. I've been following them so that they could find Chomper". Littlefoot was very impressed with Aero. "Really? But aren't you scared of them?" Aero looked back at the sharpteeth family. "These sharpteeth aren't too bad, but if they want to eat any of us, then yes, I'll be scared of them". Aero sighed and added, "Alright you guys. A deal is a deal, you found Chomper, but now all of you have to go back to the Mysterious Beyond. Would you mind chasing those other two out of here too?"

The sharpteeth looked down and saw who it was that was talking. The yellow sharptooth had its head down to Aero's level and let Chomper come down. Chomper ran to Aero and gave him a hug, giving him a couple of sqeaks. Aero smiled at Chomper and said while rubbing the top of Chomper's head, "I'll miss you too buddy, just...don't forget about us, okay?" The yellow sharptooth rubbed Aero softly and to Aero's curiosity, the sharptooth purred. 'Huh, never have I thought that some dinosaurs would make purring sounds'. Aero smiled at the affection and as soon as the rubbing stopped, Aero said to the sharptooth with a smile on his face. "You're welcome".

Chomper climbed back up to the yellow sharptooth's head and two sharpteeth made sure that Chomper was secure, before dashing their way towards the two dinosaurs that they roared at before. Littlefoot watched them go for a short while, however he looked at Littlefoot whilst saying, "I better make sure that they keep their word". Once Aero saw Littlefoot, his smile dropped. Littlefoot was sad to see Chomper go. "Hey, we'll see him again. I'm sure of it".

As Aero suggested, him and Littlefoot went to where Aero met the two sharpteeth to make sure they out of the Great Valley. True to their word, all of the sharpteeth exited including the two egg stealers that were causing trouble to the gang and Chomper. Aero nodded, feeling grateful and he then told the adult dinosaurs in the valley the whole story of what had happened. From Littlefoot and the gang rescuing 'Ducky's family egg' to the sharpteeth coming through the hole. Aero pointed them to where the hole was and with cooperation from the residents, they found a number of big sized boulders to block it. Littlefoot and his friends apologized for everything that's happened, however, they all accepted their apologies and rested for another day.
