[3 days later; The Institute]

Bella blinked open her eyes, carefully looking around her. She was in the Institute she knew that much, but she was in the infirmary where Jace had been. She looked around at the other beds, but they were all empty. It confused her. She looked to her right and saw Jace leaned over in a chair, his face propped up with his hand and he was sleeping it seemed like.

Just then Alec walked into the room. "Bella?"

Alec's voice woke Jace, and he shifted, looking over at Bella. He reached out a hand, but Bella moved her hand up to stop him instantly from touching her. Her eyes landed on Alec's.

"What am I doing here?" She asked Alec, letting her hand drop when Jace withdrew his.

"Well, you've been asleep for 3 days. We were starting to get really worried. Carlisle said that nothing was wrong from what he could tell. He set up an IV for fluids, and we've just been monitoring you." Alec explained.

Bella looked down at the arm that had the IV in it. She reached over and pulled it out and shifted to sit up. Jace started to help her but she stopped him. "Jace. I can help myself." She said it simply, her voice even. He eased back down in his chair, frowning, but had yet to say anything. "3 days?"

Alec nodded, frowning too. "Bella, maybe you shouldn't move so quickly."

Bella flipped the covers off of her, and swung her legs over to the side of the bed. The motion was quick, and she got a bit dizzy, but she took her time, and got to her feet. "How are the other injured?"

"Recovered. Iz and Clary fixed them up with runes, and Carlisle tended to what couldn't be healed right away." Alec said.

"Is Maryse still in Idris?"

"She is."

"Where is Jake and Simon?"

Alec sighed. "They're out with Magnus and Luke."

"Carlise?"

"Not here. He said he would drop in to check on you today."

Bella nodded. "Jasper?"

"Right here," Jasper's voice called to her as he stood in the doorway. He had his arms crossed across his chest, leaning against the doorframe.

Bella nodded and let out a breath. "Okay. Any news on Valentine or where Jocelyn is?" She said as she took a few steps, testing the waters.

Jace stood then, ready to catch her if she fell. Alec shook his head. "Nothing. Alice is helping Iz and Clary with trying to locate Valentine right now."

"Good," she said and let out a sigh, closing her eyes. Her head throbbed suddenly, and she felt a little weakened, but she held her own, her body shaking a little. "I'm going to shower."

Alec nodded. "Okay. Do you need me to get Clary?"

"No. Jasper, can you help me to my room please?" Bella asked, not looking over at Jace.

Jasper nodded, unfolding his arms and went to her and swooped her into his arms and carried her away.

Alec and Jace watched Jasper take her away and Jace let out a sigh. "She's not speaking to me."

"Well, you hurt her. Jace, when you were hurt, she cared for you. Made sure your wounds were healed, and stayed with you until you woke up. She admitted to herself that she had feelings for you, and you lashed out at her. You judged her, and you made the entire situation worse." Alec said and then sighed. "Give her some space."

"I shouldn't have said those things to her. I'm not her boyfriend…she slept with Simon, and that's her business. Not mine. I don't know what got into me…" Jace muttered.

"It's because you care about her Jace. If you hadn't cared, then her being with Simon wouldn't have affected you like it did," he said and then looked at his watch. "Everything will work out. Magnus says if things are meant to be, then they're meant to be." He offered the safe advice Magnus had given him a couple days ago, and then walked out of the infirmary and went back to command.

Jasper got Bella up to her room, and even got the shower started for her. "There you go darling." He murmured, and looked at her. Her face was paler than normal, and even though she had spent 3 days in a slumber, she looked exhausted.

"Thank you." She murmured, looking down at her hands, and then the tears started falling.

Jasper sighed and pulled her into his arms. "Hey. No need to cry."

"I'm such an idiot."

"You're not an idiot." Jasper pushed calming waves towards her, and it helped her immensely. He felt her emotions subside as she calmed down.

Bella sniffed, burying her face against Jasper's chest. She sighed after standing there a few moments. "Jace. He said some things, and I overreacted."

Jasper nodded. "This is about Jace?"

She pulled away from him now and turned her back, wiping at her face. "Yeah. I did something that I really shouldn't have done, and well, somehow Jace found out and-"

"Are you and Jace in a relationship?"

"No…"

"Well, then what do you have to feel sorry about darling?"

She sniffed again. "Because I have these feelings for Jace, and I…I slept with Simon anyways. I shouldn't have. I know that it was not a good idea when we did it…but I still did it. I don't know how Jace found out, but he did, and he was hurt…I just didn't think…"

"You didn't think that Jace had feelings for you?"

Bella nodded, wiping at her face again. "I'm an idiot."

Jasper sighed, taking a step towards her and rubbing his hands down her arms. "You're not an idiot. Maybe misguided, but not an idiot. If you want to fix things with Jace, then fix 'em. Pushing him away, and ignoring him, ain't gonna fix it darling. You're gonna have to step up here."

"I know…but now he's probably…" There was a light knock at her door.

Jasper looked up at the door and walked over to open it. "Hey, she's not in the shower yet." Jasper announced and then he stepped to the side and Jace walked through the door. Jasper looked over at Bella, and he winked with a small grin and left the room to the two.

"Listen, hear me out before you shut me out again," Jace began. "I'm really sorry. I know that I reacted really bad when all you did was help me get better when I had been attacked and injured, and- "

"Jace…it's fine. I'm the one that is sorry," Bella said, her dark eyes meeting his golden ones. "I overreacted. I shouldn't have."

Jace looked at her and nodded. "Well, I believe we can agree that we both overreacted then." He paused. "Whatever you have with Simon, I won't mess it up. If you want to be with him, I won't stand in your way, and I'll be your friend still. I won't act-"

"I don't want to be with Simon…" She murmured, shaking her head.

Jace opened his mouth, and then shut it. "Then-"

"I want to be with you," She said, the words rolling off her tongue and through her lips before she realized what was happening.

Jace moved towards her then, pulling her into his arms, and his lips connected with hers. The kiss made her head spin, as his mouth assaulted hers, his tongue pushing in against hers. His arms supported her fully, as her body pressed to his. Her hands automatically went to his shirt, pulling at it, as his hands roamed over her body, pulling at her shirt as well. They managed to get in the bathroom, his foot hooking the door, and pulling it closed behind them. The steam of the shower was filling the room, the mirror was fogged up, and the thinness of the air seemed to heighten the pleasure, as he got her nearly naked. It didn't take long for her to get dressed and out into the command center. Alec looked up at her when she came in. "Hey Bella, you feeling better?" He asked. He was the only one in the command center.

"Yeah. I can't believe I was out for three days."

"Well, I think it's the rune you used. Mother doesn't know what rune it is, and neither do any of the Clave. Clary recognizes the rune from a rune from her journal that she doodled in. It seems you both share that skill. The Clave seems to think that you and Clary are able to create new runes, which would mean you both have a direct line to the angels." Alec explained.

Bella nodded and sighed. "I don't know. I don't recall ever really seeing runes before coming here."

Jasper walked in about that time. "Oh, hey darling, you feeling better?"

Bella turned her attention to Jasper. "Yes, much better. How's the search going with Alice?"

Jasper shrugged. "It's going. I can't say that we're any closer to figuring out Valentine's location, but she's trying. He's not making decisions, so Alice is just stuck right now."

Bella sighed, crossing her arms and walking over to Alec, who was staring at a map of Brooklyn. She studied it, thinking about the past clues that they had. "Water. Alec. East River."

Alec looked at the map. "It's possible. There's also the harbor. What if she's not in Brooklyn, but in the Bronx? Or anywhere else? Valentine is not just limited to New York."

Bella shook her head. "I don't think he would go that far. He's looking for Clary and I and our amulets. If he wants those amulets, he wouldn't stray far from New York at all."

"She's got a good point," Jasper commented.

Alec sighed, looking over the map. "I'll send a team of shadowhunters to the harbor to check things out, and then another to East River area, and meet up in the middle with the other team." He said before stepping away, and taking out his phone.

Bella turned and looked at Jasper. "So, that's a start. Do you think that you and Alice can try and take a look around the area too? I brought something back from Jocelyn's house with her scent on it."

Jasper nodded. "I'll take a look around. I'll try and track as far as I can."

Bella smiled and then hugged him. "Thank you." She murmured.

Jasper smiled and hugged his arms around her too. "It's no problem darling. What are best friends for?"

"It means a lot. I know that Clary is really worried about her mom."

"I know, and I'm going to do everything in my power to bring Jocelyn home safe."

Bella nodded, and then looked up at Simon and Jake when they walked in. Jake bounded to her quickly, snatching her into his arms. "Jake, can't breathe." She wheezed out, and he released her, grinning.

"I was super worried about you Bells." Jake exclaimed.

"I'm sorry for making everyone worry. I'm not sure what really happened, but I'm better now. Thank you." She said with a smile. She looked over at Simon, who was standing there, his hands in his pockets.

Simon smiled at her. "Glad to see you here in the land of the living. I thought you were never going to wake up."

Bella shrugged, smiling. "Didn't feel like I was asleep for three whole days, but I suppose I needed some beauty rest."

Simon started to say something, but looked up at Clary when she stroll in with Iz. "Oh! Bella, you're awake." Clary said, and went to Bella and hugged her. "I was so worried. I looked at the rune on your hand," she said and picked Bella's hand up to study the rune, but it was gone. She frowned. "That's odd…"

Bella looked down at her hand too and frowned as well. "That is odd. It was there when I woke up yesterday, but now it's vanished…"

Iz took Bella's hand and studied it, flipping it over and inspecting it. "I've never seen a rune just disappear like that."

"Something is wrong with me?"

"Pfft. Nothing is wrong with you Bella. Maybe it has to do with it being a new rune," Simon suggested.

Alec returned, Jace right behind him. They walked over to the small circle around Bella. He looked at her hand that everyone was studying. "The rune is gone."

Jace's brows knitted together, and he reached out and grabbed her hand and turned it over carefully in his hands. "It is gone. It was there last night," he said, looking up at her. "I don't recall seeing it this morning."

Bella shook her head. "It was there last night, but this morning…I don't remember if I saw it at all waking up. I didn't pay attention."

Jace shook his head. "I didn't see it at all. It must have disappeared in the night."

Alec raised a brow, looking at Jace and then looking at Bella, who was now blushing slightly. "I'll let mother know about the rune disappearing. For now, I'm sending you off into teams. Iz, take Jasper with you and Clary. I'll head out with Jace and Bella. Jake, can you and Simon go to the apartments and look around at things, and see if you notice anything out of the ordinary? I'm sending Elliot and Topher with you both as shadowhunter backup."

Simon and Jake exchanged looks and then nodded their agreement. "My key for the apartment is in my room on my nightstand," Bella mentioned to Simon and Jake, and then she was off with Alec and Jace, searching close to the harbor for any sign of Valentine or Jocelyn.
