Writer's Notes: Thank you TheFlamingo29, pozemom, Guest, and GoddessNyte2 for your reviews! Simon was never my real target for Bella's main love interest, he's just…well Simon. Jace was always my focus for Bella's initial love interest from the get-go. Simon will play a big role though, later with Jace. So, stay tuned! Thank you everyone that follows and favorites! I appreciate everyone for their support! Keep checking in for updates, there are several chapters ahead of us.
When Bella returned Alec immediately went to her. "Hey, are you okay?"
"I'm okay. Just some tests. He took some blood to run." Bella answered and then paused. "Alec…can you keep a secret?"
Alec nodded. "You know I can."
She hesitated, but took his hand and lead him away, somewhere private, which was the weapons room. She took the picture out of her back pocket. "I want to tell Jace in person." She said and handed Alec the picture.
Alec took it and looked at it. "Oh." He looked up at her. "You're…"
"Pregnant…yes."
"Are you okay with this?" He stared at the picture, amazed at the idea of being an uncle for the first time.
"I am. I'm scared, but…there's not much I can do, but accept it. I mixed up my birth control pills. I think Jace is going to be upset," she said and ran a hand through her hair.
Alec shook his head. "I don't think he'll be as upset as you think. Worried maybe, but upset with you? No. There is a birth control rune that is very affective if you want that after the baby is born."
Bella nodded. "That's probably a good idea. I didn't really think about it. I guess with everything crazy going on…I just took the wrong week, and that just messed everything up. I'm an idiot."
"You're not an idiot," Alec said and looked back at the picture. "Wow." He murmured. "I'm going to be an uncle," He said with a small smile. "Congrats Bella, truly. We're going to protect you and the baby no matter what. This means you can't train like mother instructed."
"I know," she frowned. "I'm worried about what she'll think."
Alec wasn't sure how his mother would react either. It was something that made things a little harder for Bella. Valentine was more than likely going to target Bella and Clary soon. "You should tell Clary."
"I will, after I see Jace. Clary is resting right now, and I really don't want to disturb her."
Jace, Iz, and Victor returned Sunday, like planned and Victor went on to meet Maryse and Robert at the London Institute. Bella was laying down resting when they arrived because she was having some more dizzy spells. Jace knocked on her door and opened it slightly. "Alec said that you were taking a nap and I almost didn't believe him. Are you feeling okay?" He said and walked into the room, closing the door behind him.
Bella looked up at him and tried a small smile. "Yeah, just feeling a bit weak." She said and the nausea hit her again. She groaned and struggled to get out of bed. Jace went to help her and she rushed to the bathroom and threw up again in the toilet.
Jace followed her, pulling her hair back away from her face. "Babe, you're not feeling okay. What's going on?"
Bella cleaned her mouth and flushed the toilet and moved to the sink, washing her face, and drying it. She grabbed Jace's hand and lead him back to the bedroom and sat him on the bed.
"Bell-"
"I need you to just sit right here," she said and moved to her dresser and pulled the picture of her tiny baby she was carrying from the top left drawer and walked back over to a very confused Jace. She handed him the picture, and he looked at it.
"I'm not sure I understand. Who is having a baby?" He asked, looking up at her, and then the realization hit him. "Oh wait, Bella you're- "
"Pregnant." She murmured, her heart nearly stopping in her chest. She was anxious about his reaction.
He looked back at the picture. "So tiny." He murmured. "You're pregnant." He said it against as a statement. "You're pregnant," he repeated the words again. He was silent again as he stared at the picture, his brain going a mile a minute, and his heart starting to speed in his chest.
"J-Jace?" Bella stammered, wringing her hands together nervously.
He looked back at her. "Are you okay? You're sick, and dizzy. How are you?" He said, standing to reach for her. His hand going to her flat stomach, and one to her waist.
"Um. I'm okay, I'm just nervous. I wasn't sure how you would react. I thought maybe you'd be angry with me."
He shook his head. "How could I ever be angry with you? Bella, I'm worried about you. Worried about what all this will do to you. I'm okay. I'm scared, yes, but I'm okay. You're keeping the baby?"
She nodded silently.
He nodded with her. "Then okay. We'll make sure you get to the doctor on time, monitor things, keep you out of danger and…no more training. Bella, I love you. You get that?" He asked and she nodded. "Good," he pulled her into his arms, kissing her forehead, and holding her close. "I thought you were on birth control and-"
"I was. I messed up my weeks. I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize…it's okay," he said softly. He then kissed her mouth gently. "It's okay. Don't ever apologize," he said again.
He stood there with her for a few moments before releasing her. "Who all knows?"
"Just Carlisle and Alec. I wanted to tell you first before Alec, but he was all worried, and I didn't want him to be worried on top of all the stress he's under now."
"I understand," he said with a smile. "I'll do whatever it is you need or want me to do."
Bella smiled, feeling a heavy weight lift off ether. She was so happy that Jace was okay and not upset with her. The past few days have been torture just thinking about how he reacts. No matter what Alec said to keep her calm, she was just scared.
Maryse was not happy to discover Bella's condition. She locked herself and Jace in the office as she berated him. Robert was more understanding and sat down with Bella and spoke with her. It surprised Alec to see his father calm with everything that was happening. Bella was a "nice girl", he heard his father say.
Clary was over the moon excited for her sister. Despite spiraling into a depression because of her mother's disappearance, she was getting through it, and decided to focus all her energy into helping find her mother. She didn't care if they were treating it like her mother was already dead. It had angered her at first that they were seemingly giving up on her mother without another thought, but she knew that wasn't really true, that they had just exhausted a ton of resources already. She would train more and be more physically ready for anything.
When Jace finally emerged, after what seemed like an eternity, Bella was nervous and worried about him. She went to him and he only drew her into his arms, and kissed her fiercely, deeply. Maryse's eyes narrowed as she looked on at the two of them. There was a war going on, and here Bella, one of the best she had seen in a while, was out of commission for nine whole months. It was despicable.
"Bella. A word." Maryse barked, and Bella reluctantly, broke the kiss and followed Maryse into the office, where Jace looked on, his face frozen with anger and anxiety. Maryse shut the door. "How could you allow this to happen?"
Bella was taken back by the ferocity in Maryse's tone. "I…it was not intended."
"Regardless if it was intended or not. You should not have been partaking in such a relationship with Jace. He needs focus right now on what is important, not some girl and a child."
"I beg your pardon?"
"Jace is set to be one of the strongest Shadowhunters we have ever seen, and now he's being held back by someone like you. While you are extremely talented, and could be useful, you are now useless to this war and-"
"No. You will not speak to me like that." Bella barked back, suddenly coming unglued. "You don't get to blame anything on Jace or me."
Maryse looked taken back now. "Listen here, you don't speak to me like this. I'm the leader of this institute."
"I don't give a damn who you are. I am carrying Jace's child, yes. That does not make me useless. I did not go and purposely get pregnant to throw a wrench into your plans."
Maryse pursed her lips. "Unless you plan on getting rid of this child, your pregnancy makes you useless in the event of battle."
"I'm not like you. I will not discard my child because it fits into some neat plan I had. Things happen, and for a reason," Bella spat.
"I-I don't know what you're talking about. I love all three of my children."
Bella made a hmph sound. "Right. Three children."
Maryse was quiet a moment. "What are you talking about?"
"It doesn't matter. Now if you don't mind, I'm going to go throw up now," Bella said and she stormed out of the office, brushing past Jace, and rushing to the bathroom.
Jace looked at Maryse, who went to the doorway, a look of astonishment on her face. He went to her and stared at her with a serious expression. "Maryse, you have been nothing but a mother to me. I have always followed your guidance and I have always held a deep respect for you. But Bella is pregnant. With my child, and I love her, and the baby regardless of what is happening right now. If you can't accept that, then it is your loss. Bella does not need unnecessary stress right now, and if you cause her stress, then that is something I will not forgive."
Maryse looked at Jace, the boy that she took in when Michael Wayland had died. Even then, Wayland was just a placeholder for a parent despite who his real parents were. She swallowed and nodded. "I apologize Jace," She said, her voice small. She reached out and caressed his cheek. "I only worry."
Jace nodded and then walked away, going after Bella, to check on her. When he found her, she was already coming out of the bathroom, brushing a hand through her hair. "Hey, are you okay?" He asked, his accented voice soft. He placed a hand over her flat belly, still amazed that he was going to be a father.
"I'm okay. I just…." She sighed. "I need to tell you something and I want to apologize about it in advance because I'm really not supposed to tell anyone."
Jace looked confused. He followed her over to where she sat on the bed.
"I love you, and I never meant to really keep this information from you, it was just…something I was instructed not to share." She paused. "Maryse…she's my biological mother." The words left her lips, and she felt her heart start racing.
Jace's brows furrowed together. "Maryse is…your mother? Who told you not to tell anyone?"
"Alec. He doesn't want this getting out. Alec and I are twins. Maryse thought that I died as an infant."
Jace shook his head. "That doesn't make any sense. That would mean that Valentine is-"
"Alec's father as well," Bella finished.
"I…" Jace wasn't sure what to say. "So, your relationship with Alec is…brother and sister, and all this time, the affection, the secret meetings with you two…it's been because he doesn't want anyone to know."
"Yes."
"Is he really-"
"Yes, he really likes Magnus. He isn't comfortable telling everyone that either. Because of the…stigma with his parents. He doesn't want to hurt his dad because Robert is the only father that he knows. That and, this could ruin a lot of things right now." She explained. "I really wanted to tell you all of this but-"
Jace leaned in and kissed her softly. "It's okay. I'm upset, but I'm not mad at you," he said and then he brought her into his arms and held her close. "I'm only sorry that you couldn't tell me sooner. I will not betray you and Alec. Alec is like…my brother, and I will do anything to protect him. I love you, you're my heart and my soul. You and our child. I will protect you, at all cost." He kissed her again.
Bella teared up. It was the best thing anyone had said to her. She felt like she was loved, and even though she was afraid to fall too hard, she was opening her heart up again, since Edward.
The week went by, and Maryse spoke little of Bella's condition, and focused more on the recovery efforts for Jocelyn. Things were laying silent now, and no Warlock could explain the absence. Even things were quiet for most downworlders too. Magnus had the full support of neighboring Warlocks, as the threat of Valentine was more than a threat to the Shadowhunters, but also a threat to them as well. Luke and his pack were helpful, and more than accommodating to help with the search for Valentine. The Cullen's issued their full support, and there was the support of the Quileute pack as well.
Bella was officially 7 weeks pregnant, and the morning sickness seemed to be getting worse. Jace had been more than accommodating and extra patient as well.
"When is the next appointment with Dr Cullen?" Jace asked as he set breakfast down in front of Bella early that morning.
Bella picked up her fork. "Next week. He said he was going to prescribe something for all the sickness. I hope it'll work." She took a bite of the omelet that Jace carefully made for her. She shouldn't be shocked anymore by the things that Jace did because he was so amazing, but cooking was one of those things that she hadn't really pictured him doing. Eggs was one of the things they had discovered, didn't upset her stomach at all, so Jace make her different variation of eggs in the morning.
"Is it just a normal checkup?" He asked as he poured some orange juice.
"I believe so." She said and grabbed the orange juice that Jace offered. "Thank you." She said with a smile.
He smiled back and leaned down and kissed her softly. "I've got the morning meeting thing in the command center. Finish breakfast and just join when you're ready." He said and then kissed her again.
Bella smiled and watched him leave. Jake appeared then, it looked like he just came back from a run. "Oh, morning Bells," he said as he grabbed water from the fridge and sat next to her. "I'm glad Maryse isn't as uptight anymore about us downworlders, being here more often." He commented.
"Well, it's to serve her needs, so don't get too glad. As soon as you've done what she needs you to do, you'll be kicked to the curb." Bella stabbed her omelet again and took a bite.
Jake raised a brow. "She still giving you a hard time?"
"She's not talking to me hardly since that one day," Bella sighed. "I can't wait for her to return to Idris. I can't wait for all of this to just be over."
Jake nodded. "I know life for you has been rough, Bells. I wish I could help make everything better." He went to her and slid an arm around her shoulders. "I'm your best friend. If you want me to kidnap you and take you away from this world, all you have to do is say the word." He said with a white grin.
Bella smiled and leaned her head against him. "Thanks, you're too kind." She sighed and set her fork down. She was pretty full now and she had only eaten half the omelet. "But, running away isn't going to do any good. I ran from Forks to New York. You tell me if that was for the best."
"Hmm. Well, you do have Jace and you're going to be a mother." He pointed out.
"Those are the only 2 things that are keeping me grounded right now." She sighed. "You should go and get to the meeting. I'll be there in a bit." She said and Jake sighed, leaving her to herself and joining everyone else. She finished her orange juice and then did her own dishes and went on to the command center and sat down in the back, listening to Maryse drone on about next steps.
