The alarm clock woke me up once again but I ignored it this time. Nightmares happened to me all night, all centered on that girl's dying face.
It was noon before I woke up completely.
'It feels like I didn't sleep at all' I say in my head. Sure enough, my body and chest still ached. It left me feeling hollow.
'This is just the beginning, you will see many more die in the future' Anthem says neutrally.
'Why didn't you save her' I say with lingering resentment.
'She was already dying' They say with no apology in sight.
'That last spell was excellent, although you need to be able to do it in an instant' Anthem said again.
I grit my teeth and take a moment to look at the necklace around my neck. It was in the shape of a hollow star. I actually saw my eyes reflecting back on it's metallic shine. They look empty.
'Is it magic?' I ask after a moment of silence.
'No, if it was I would be able to sense it' Anthem said after a moment of contemplation.
I then go through my morning routine. I put on a simple white T-shirt and black shorts. I then decide what I'm going to do today.
'You should train more' Anthem said after thinking it over.
'Not today, I need to think' I say with a final tone.
'Very well' Seems they don't like the idea of just moping around.
'I don't, move on, get stronger so it never happens again' Anthem said trying to inspire me.
'You're right, this is the first battle of many, I just can't get over the fact that that devil could be so cruel. By the way, did you recognize him Anthem?' I asked after a moment.
'House Balam has been in a decline ever since the Great War'
'Do you think they will investigate his death?'
'Without a doubt, I would lay low now that I think about it' Anthem said after thinking.
'I think I will go to the park today and see if I can meet Issei and Irina' I say finally.
'This will be interesting' Anthem said sarcastically.
Before I knew it I was at the park and lo and behold, there they are. They were in the sandpit making castles. As I walk up to them they turn and look at me with smiles on their faces.
"Hey what's your name" Issei said happily.
I'm surprised that he was so welcoming.
"Call me Isaac"
"You should be careful who you talk to" I grin back at them. Irina looked at me for a second and smiled and said
"You seem okay, want to build sand castles with us?" I sigh at the boring idea but smiled back, acting like the child my body was.
'What's the point in this?' Anthem said with a groan.
'He turned into a mega pervert after an incident, so I'm going to try to stop that from happening' Thinking about canon Issei made my brain hurt. He really was scum at the beginning of the story. From what I recall he met an old man at a festival that the town held. That old man was a lecher to tell children about the *power* of breasts.
The next few hours were like pulling teeth. I played like a child with them. Before I knew it it was getting dark.
I hear a car door opening up and look up at the couple walking towards us. I tense at the action.
"Issei, Irina, time to go home" The mom said with a smile.
'This must be his family" I think after looking them over. They looked towards me with a curious eye and said.
"Did you two make a new friend?"
Issei looked at me with a wide grin and said "Yep this is my new friend, Isaac"
They turned and looked at me.
"Hey" I smiled but it didn't meet my eyes.
"Would your parents care if we have you over for dinner?"
I quickly say "They don't care" with a shrug.
They stared at me with a frown before smiling.
"Great, come with us then" The dad said with a smile.
'Just as welcoming as Issei… Must be nice'
'They're not your parents, they're your body's parents, so don't overthink it' Anthem said in his way of comforting me.
'My parents weren't the best in my world either' I think to them with some sadness.
I walk to the car with the kids and we make our way to their house.
"So Isaac, that sounds English doesn't it?"
"Yeah, guess my parents really liked the name"
They looked like they didn't buy it, but didn't say anything further.
We made it to the house uneventfully.
As they open the door I was immediately surprised at how 'cozy' it felt. My house is nothing like that, filled with just the essentials.
'I'm getting bitter, aren't I?' I think to myself.
'Get over it' Anthem said with annoyance.
'Why the fuck am I getting so edgy?' I wasn't one for whining and moping in my previous life. Could it be that this body's emotions are bleeding into mine? A question for another time.
The dinner was great and good. Frozen TV dinners at my house had no contest on these home cooked meals.
After dinner as everyone was going to the living room to chat, his parents took me aside and decided to ask some questions.
"What did you mean by your family not caring?" They looked serious so I sighed and I said "They're not even home, they left on a vacation a day ago." They looked angry at the thought.
"How long will they be gone?" The mom asked.
"They said two weeks I believe" They looked even angrier.
"Did they leave anyone to stay with you?" Shit this is going to be bad.
I sighed and said "No"
The anger left their face as the pity took over.
"How could they do that, you look to be Issei's age?" The dad said looking at me.
"Don't know, I try not to think about it" I didn't lie, hell, them being gone left me to do whatever I want, so it's not that bad.
They looked at each other and walked back to the kitchen to talk about it.
'What a fucking mess I made, really shouldn't have went to the park today' I think as they come back into the room. They looked happy again at least.
"How would you like to stay here until they come back?" My eyes widen at the statement. The thought didn't even cross my mind.
'What do you think, Anthem?'
'As long as you continue your training, I have no problem with it'
I seriously consider it and I say "You don't even know me, I just met Issei today so we haven't been friends for long" They looked at each other and the mom said "We can't turn away a child in need, besides, Issei is a good judge of character" My eyes widen again, how could such good people exist.
'Not all humans are ignorant' Anthem added helpfully.
"I don't want to impose" I say.
"Nonsense, come into the living room and we'll all chat."
And so I walked to the living room and sat down as we all watched TV and laughed.
It got to 9pm and I heard a knock on the door.
"That must be Irina's dad" The door opened and surprise overcame me as I see that her dad was the one with ashen blonde hair in robes. He took a glance at me in confusion before smiling at Irinia.
"Time to go home Irina, thanks for having her over, Mister and Misses Hyoudou." They waved it off and said
"You know it's not a problem!" Issei pouted and said "Aw". Irinia turned and said "Bye Issei, Bye Isaac" I gave her a small wave before they left.
I turned to Mrs. Hyoudou after they left and asked "Are you sure about this?" She smiled and said "Yes,I'm sure, now then, time to go to bed you two."
Issei looked at me, and then at his parents, before his eyes lit up "Isaac is staying!?"
"Yes, son, he's staying for a while, show him to the guest bedroom Issei"
He gets up fast and grabs my hand before taking upstairs. He takes me to the room before asking something shocking, "Will you be my nii-san?"
I simply stand there shocked. They have barely known for a day and they're this nice. Then again, I wouldn't mind having a brother.
At that moment, I knew that I'm going to protect these people with my life. No matter what.
I smile and say "Sure thing"
His eyes light up as he walks out of the room to his.
'I see you've found a new reason, I suppose I can live with a reason like that' Anthem said with another neutral tone.
Events in the series play out in my head as I remember Issei's death and beginning of a new life.
Raynare will die in agony.
'You can't protect him forever, just so you know' Anthem speaks up.
'We can plan tomorrow, for now, I'm going to sleep'
And this time, with no nightmares.
