Chapter 9
The group finds themselves stopped on the side of the road. Although Natsu is completely immune to his motion sickness thanks to Wendy, the young dragon slayer isn't nearly as lucky as him. Casting Troia as an enchantment proves to be significantly less effective than as a Dragon Slayer Art. While she isn't rendered totally immobile by the movement, she still suffers a major case of nausea. After vomiting three times, the group decides it is best to take a break and let the young girl recuperate.
While Mard Geer and Anna tend to Wendy, Natsu and Erza take off into the surrounding woods. There isn't really anything of note around these parts, and they are left wandering around.
"How often do you get to see your brother?" Erza asks.
Natsu thinks for a moment before replying, "It can be months at a time. He'll stop by every so often, but he's always traveling around. I really don't see him that much anymore."
Erza nods her head, "I live at school, so I don't get to see my family that much either. It can be hard."
Erza looks over to Natsu for confirmation.
He nods his head in agreement, "I guess it can be. Igneel's like a dad to me, but he isn't my birth dad. Zeref's the only family I have who's related by blood."
"Excuse my asking, but did you know your real parents?"
Natsu shook his head no, "They died when I was young. A dragon attacked our village and killed everyone. Zeref only managed to save me."
Erza falls silent. No doubt that event occurred years ago, but to her knowledge, attacks like that were uncommon back then. It has only been in recent years that dragon attacks on human settlements have become common. Natsu story stirs an odd emotion in her though. A village being attacked, someone being saved by another. She can't explain it, but it gives her a strange feeling.
Suddenly, a flash of yellow flits by the two teenagers. Natsu and Erza jump from surprise as the yellow speck races away from them. It darts around the trees away from the two of them. It leaves a trail of yellow dust in its wake. The dust doesn't remain for long though, and it quickly disperses.
"What was that?" Erza asks, still surprised.
"No idea, but let's follow it!"
"How, it's already gone?"
Natsu points at his nose, "That dust it left behind had a really strong smell, I could track it easily."
Erza looks around and realizes for the first time that she has no idea where they are.
"Hold on, do you know where we are?"
"No," Natsu points to his nose once again, "But I can still smell the others."
Erza shrugs her shoulders. If Natsu can still smell out Anna, Wendy, and Mard Geer, then it should be safe for them to pursue this mysterious creature. She's never seen something so small and fast. She also has to admit, she is curious about what just flew by them.
"Then let's go!"
Natsu smirked, "Yes Ma'am!"
Natsu grabs Erza's hand and charges off in the direction the creature flew. It takes a moment for Erza to gain her footing, but soon she can run behind Natsu with no problem. He seems to be running in random directions, turning suddenly and nearly running into trees!
Suddenly, a flash of yellow darts past them, and Natsu turns around suddenly. Not paying attention, he knocks both himself and Erza over. The two of them fall to the ground, with Natsu laying on top of Erza. They stare at each other for a moment, and Erza begins to blush as she realizes just how close the two of them are.
Natsu quickly jumps off and offers her a hand. Erza gladly accepts Natsu's help and gets back to her feet.
"Uh…sorry about that."
"It's okay…" Erza replies, looking away shyly.
"Let's go, it's getting away!"
Determination flares in both of their eyes as they dash off in the direction of the yellow speck. They run through the winding woods and slowly begin to catch up to the yellow speck. The sound of crashing water begins to echo around them as they reach a waterfall. The two watch as the yellow speck dances over the water. Erza quietly walks forward and tries to get a closer look at the speck.
"What is that?" Erza whispers.
"No idea, never seen anything like it."
The two teens watch the thing dance around for a little bit, mesmerized. They almost don't want to leave this thing.
"I wonder…do you think it might be a Fairy?"
Natsu looks at Erza questioningly, but considers her proposition, nonetheless. He doesn't recall Igneel ever telling him about Fairies, but that gives him no reason to believe they don't exist.
"Maybe he replies."
"I wish I could see it closer, but I'm afraid if I try, it'll just run away."
Both teens silently agree as the supposed fairy continues to dance over the water. Finally, the fairy flies up the waterfall and away from Natsu and Erza. The two stay there silently watching the water for a few more moments.
"I wonder…do fairy's have tails?" Erza wonders aloud.
Natsu looks at Erza quizzically.
"Oh, sorry, just thinking aloud."
Natsu strikes a thinking pose and ponders the question, "A Fairy Tail?"
Erza giggles to herself, "Maybe. Anyways, we should get back to the others."
Natsu nods in agreement. The two look back at the waterfall once more before headed back to their friends.
Just a little breather chapter. I didn't expect that last "mini arc" to run for so long. Hope you enjoyed.
