A/N: This is an AU three-shot story about self-worth and finding one's place in the world. Trust me it's better than it probably sounds. Tonks doubts her worth and two people swoop in to prove her wrong. Takes place before, during, and after the battle in the Department of Mysteries. Based on the song of the same name by Nickelback.
Chapter 1
Tonks plopped into a chair at the dining table across from Sirius.
"Rough day?" Her cousin questioned honestly concerned.
"You could say that," Tonks grumbled.
"Well you look fantastic," Sirius stated sarcastically.
Tonks glared at him, "where's Remus?"
"Right here," a voice behind her acknowledged.
Tonks turned around and smiled at her trusty boyfriend.
"Are you okay?" Remus asked worriedly as he noticed a big bruise on her cheek.
Tonks shrugged, "I'll live. Three Death Eaters are now being processed and thrown into Azkaban."
"Wait you took on three Death Eaters on your own?" Sirius asked in shock.
Remus just continued to look worried as he gently brushed his hand across her cheek.
"Yes, that is what Auror's are trained to do Siri. Although I can't take all of the credit, two of them managed to knock themselves out against one another," Tonks admitted.
"You look like they got you a bit too," Remus said, Tonks tried not to roll her eyes at his concern.
"Remus I love you for being concerned but I promise that I'm fine," Tonks said looking him in the eye.
Before any of them could further their conversation they heard the front door open and close. Without hesitation the three got up quickly and headed into the hallway to see who had intruded on their somewhat peaceful evening. When they saw Tonks colleagues they lowered and stowed their wands.
"We were sent to check on you," Kingsley said looking at Tonks.
"Ugh really? This again?" Tonks groaned as the three occupants of the house and their two guests headed to the kitchen.
Kingsley chuckled and Mad-Eye grunted in response.
"Anyone want to explain?" Sirius asked curiously.
"Our boss Rufus Scrimgeour seems to have a thing for Tonks. Whenever she gets injured in the line of duty he sends us to make sure she's okay," Kingsley teased.
Tonks rolled her eyes, "he doesn't have a 'thing' for me. He's just our boss and worries about all of us."
"Kiddo he doesn't check in on any of the other Aurors when they……." Mad-Eye was cut off but the sound of hissing from the fireplace.
They all stood around the fireplace and saw Snape's face popping through the coal.
"Snape?" Kingsley questioned in surprise.
"Potter and his friends seem to think that the Dark Lord has taken Black to, and I quote, 'the place where it is hidden' presumably the Department of Mysteries. Seeing as I can clearly see Black there with you obviously the Dark Lord has used his connection with Potter to make him believe that Black is there. I have informed Albus and he will be at Headquarters shortly I suggest Black stays behind to tell him what has happened, not like he's worthy of doing anything else. The rest of you may want to head to the Department of Mysteries," Snape spoke quickly.
At his mention of Dumbledore Sirius had headed upstairs very quickly leaving the others behind questioning what had just happened.
"Alright well Black stays here, Kingsley and I will head to the Ministry. You and Lupin follow us in six minutes," Mad-Eye ordered to Tonks.
Tonks nodded, "wait! How do I get Remus through the employee entrance?"
"With any luck you should be able to get him through by side-along floo," Kingsley suggested.
Tonks agreed and watched her colleagues/friends leave.
Tonks turned to Remus, "I love you and I'm going to get you out of there."
Remus looked at Tonks in shock, "I'm getting you out of there Dora. You have to come back I love you too much to see anything bad happen to you."
Tonks looked unsure and Sirius chose that exact moment to walk back in.
"So what's going on? Are we going or not?" Sirius asked.
"You are staying here," Tonks said.
"No way! I am going!" Sirius said in frustration.
"Sirius you know Dora is right, someone has to stay behind and tell Dumbledore what's happening," Remus said.
"No I am NOT staying behind! Harry needs to see me to know that I'm okay!" Sirius argued.
Tonks sighed, "Sirius he needs both of you to be alive to help him through this mess. If you insist on coming I can't stop you but you better not get yourself killed!"
Sirius nodded and tried not to grin enthusiastically.
Tonks rolled her eyes and grabbed ahold of both men's arms, "alright this should work the same way that side-along apparation works just stay close and try to focus on the Ministry."
Sirius threw the powder into the fire as Tonks spoke the words for their location and stepped into the fire with the two men she loved more than any other person in her life other than her parents.
Moments later they stumbled out of the fireplace and into the Ministry hall of fireplaces that led into the Atrium.
Mad-Eye and Kingsley were waiting for them and steadied Tonks as she, unlike her companions, nearly hit the ground.
"Clumsy as ever, even heading into battle," Mad-Eye grumbled.
Tonks glared mockingly at her mentor as they all headed for the lift down to the Department of Mysteries not knowing what awaited them.
"Alright let's take out the Death Eaters and get the kids out alive," Kingsley said sternly.
"Who put you in charge?" Mad-Eye argued.
Tonks rolled her eyes, "can we just save these kids and get out of here?"
There was a collective sound of agreeance as the lift came to a stop.
"Department of Mysteries," the loudspeaker spoke.
Tonks looked uncertainly at her cousin and love before following her mentor down the hallway towards the room with multiple doors. If there was one thing that Tonks was certain of in this moment on this day it was that she was going to do everything that she could to get Sirius and Remus out of this mess alive. Harry needed them both more than she was needed, he couldn't lose someone else that he cared about at such a young age.
They entered the room with multiple doors and hesitated unsure of which door they needed to take.
There were six doors and five of them so they came to the conclusion that if they all chose a door then they would choose the door that they hadn't chosen. Once that door had been identified Mad-Eye approached it and slowly turned the handle. On the third try of this plan they were beginning to feel disheartened and like they would never find the kids in time at least until Kingsley slowly opened the unchosen door.
Tonks had to quickly duck out of the way as a curse flew passed the now open door and headed straight for her.
"Well guess we made the right choice, finally," Sirius mumbled.
Without another word or glance the five Order members entered the Death Chamber and went into battle.
