Class Trial in Session

All Rise!

"Now then allow me to start this off with a quick explanation of the class trial, " Monokuma started. "During this time you will present your evidence and argue over who you believe the killer is and vote for whodunit! If the majority vote is correct then only the blackened will be punished. However, if the majority is incorrect then ill punish everyone besides the blackened and they will get to graduate and leave to the outside world scot-free!" Monokuma explained.

Suddenly his paws covered his mouth as Monokuma hollered out, "Whoa damn! There's an overwhelming surplus of testosterone levels drifting around in here! What happened to all the girls? What, you American guys like seeing girls get killed off? A bunch of sexist, horn dogs all of you!"

Willie shook his head. "That ain't true. It's only natural most of the men have survived."

"And why would that be?" Shana asked with an obvious hint of scorn in her tone.

But Willie not catching on just shrugged. "Easy. Men are more capable of being able to survive tougher challenges than girls."

"More like boys who drift along despite how much they piss women off! How have you not died yet, you sexist pig!" Shana shouted at him?

"Where I come from a pig is a compliment," Willie said level-headed.

Shana became her snorting bull self. "I'll give you a compliment right after I make you eat your own…"

"Shana! Please show some self-restraint!" Tommy begged her.

Melinda nodded. "Yes. A small country guy like him doesn't understand why the way he thinks is not seen as okay in our big cities."

Willie smiled. "I like this new Ultimate Huntress! She's the only nice one left!"

I raised my hand up. "Guys, knock it off! We're not here to argue viewpoints on life. We need to discuss Mikayla, her murder, and who killed her."

"I agree. We need to focus. We have a limited timeframe to figure things out and the faster we do this, the faster we end this." Luca backed me up.

Ollie looked thoughtful. "But not everyone got to investigate so I don't know how much help we're gonna be."

Monokuma then spoke up. "Then allow me to start things off with the first subject for you to discuss. Hmmm. Oh, I know! I think you should discuss who the killer could be!"

"Well no duh! We already knew that!" Shana shouted out.

"I think he means there are people who could not possibly be the killer and people who could." Damian retorted.

Shana blushed. "Oh… yeah, I guess that is a good point."

"That's why a proper woman shouldn't speak unless asked to." Willie shrugged at her, shaking his head.

"Shut your damn mouth!" Shana screamed.

'Who could have been the killer and who couldn't. I'm pretty sure we already know the answer.' I thought.

"Well, then I think we need to discuss alibis," Tommy said.

Ollie spoke up, "Well I'm innocent."

"Just because you claim it don't mean that's true!" Willie shouted.

"I bet it was Melinda!" Shana accused.

Melinda looked shocked. "Me? But why?"

Shana sweatdropped. "Well, not you. The Ultimate Huntress is who I meant. She was still her conniving self who loved watching us squirm and fight for our lives. Besides she was at the party when Mikayla was found!"

Truth Bullet Fired: Non-Party Attendees

"YOU'VE GOT THAT WRONG!"

Counter!

"Actually, no it couldn't be her." I corrected Shana.

She looked shocked. "What? Really?"

"Yeah, she wasn't present during the time when Mikayla was killed. Neither were you, Willie, or Marcel." I informed her.

"But we were all at the party. How come we are the only ones with alibis?" Marcel asked with his head tilted.

"That's because of this," I said as I tapped on my e-handbook.

Present Evidence: Monokuma File

"HERE'S YOUR EVIDENCE!"

"According to the Monokuma File, Mikayla was killed at 12:27 PM. Not long after the party had started." I explained.

"And it was at that time that we were stuck in light limbo because of that flashing lights situation we found ourselves trapped in," Paul added.

"The only four people not in attendance at that time when the lighting went berserk was you four." I finished.

Marcel sighed. "But that doesn't exactly help us narrow the suspect list down. We still have…" He began quietly counting each person and then silently took away the four safe people. "Like six other suspects."

"Wow. Your math skills are impeccable." Ollie sarcastically replied.

Marcel snickered as he rubbed his nose with his finger. "Thanks, I've been practicing!"

Ollie rolled her eyes. "But then raises the next question, who could have killed her during that freakout? I'm pretty sure we were all blinded by the spasms of light beams in our eyes."

Paul smiled. "Well, we can ask the person who was controlling the music and lights."

All eyes immediately darted over to Damian. "Oh, no man! You are not gonna pin me as the killer!"

"But it makes sense. You had control of the sound and lights since they were in sync with the music you put together. It's only logical." Paul shrugged as Damian's pedestal turned red and shifted forward into the center of the circle becoming the hot seat!

'Was Damian in full control of things? I know that already!'

Non-Stop Debate

Loaded Truth Bullets: Sabotaged Stage Light, Damian's Account, and Extra Lighting/Soundboard

"I wasn't the one who killed her! I swear on everything good and holy!" Damian cried out.

"But it was your idea to host us a party, was it not? You could have set things up to your advantage and no one would be the wiser." Paul replied.

"What part of swearing on everything good and holy don't you get!? Frizz man!" Damian hissed.

Paul laughed. "No matter how you beg and plead, it doesn't hide the fact that you could control the lights to blind us while you did away with the vet."

Truth Bullet Fired: Extra Lighting/Soundboard

"YOU'VE GOT THAT WRONG!"

Counter!

"That is wrong, Paul! Damian was never in control of the lights!" I called out.

Paul glared. "Don't defend him! You saw the music and lights move together in perfect synchronization."

"Yes, he could control the way the lights flashed but not the brightness. That was all done by the extra light and soundboard we found in the dressing room!" I shouted back.

"Extra board? What are you talking about Kai?" Luca asked, confused.

"See we found this smaller board with the same setup as the bigger boards in the crow's nest. It was tucked away into the dressing room behind a clothes rack and all the lights settings were raised to the highest brightness the lights could go!" I expounded.

"But where did the smaller board even come from?" Tommy asked.

"My best guess is the little theatre room on the third floor. It wasn't anywhere in the crow's nest, in the auditorium, on stage, or backstage anywhere. The only other room that would have a light system like the one there is in that little theatre room." I told him.

"My insight has given me the truth!" Ollie suddenly interrupted me.

"Actually, I have a question. Should we really believe what Kai is telling us?" Ollie asked with a neutral tone.

"W-What?" I asked in surprise.

"Well I mean no ill will but you were the one in charge of handling the lights and sounds for the party, were you not?" She asked again.

Rebuttal Showdown!

Truth Blades Prepared: Damian's Account, Paul's Account, and Shana's Account

"Kai, I know Damian left those boards to you because of your knowledge of ==/== the stage equipment. It's very suspect that the board that caused the lights to go crazy was last used ==/== by you." Ollie stated.

"I was the last one to use the big boards in the crow's nest, sure. However, that doesn't mean that I was the one who set the one up in the dressing room backstage." I fought back.

"The lights were ==/== set up like normal and then all you had to do was sneak back and flip the lights up. Besides no one could have possibly set up the ==/== smaller board the same as the bigger one." Ollie remarked.

Truth Blade Used: Damian's Account

"I'LL CUT YOUR WORDS DOWN TO SIZE!"

Counter!

"Actually Ollie someone else could have set up the extra board to be the same as mine," I told her.

"But how is that?" Ollie asked me.

"It's all because of what Damian caught during the party. Isn't that true, Damian?" I inquired him.

Damian nodded. "Yeah, I think I know what you're talking about. After Kai gave his performance, I noticed the lights weren't responding to my DJ equipment anymore. Then a few minutes later before I could go check out the problem, the lights just came back to it and performed just like before."

"That's because the Bluetooth device that connected Damian to the auditorium system was disconnected. Then whoever did that could have taken notes of my settings and the time it would have taken them to run down from the crow's nest, get backstage, and plug the device into the small board would fit the timeframe of Damian's testimony." I informed her.

Ollie nodded. "Huh. When you put it like that I have to agree. Anyone could have matched your settings if they memorized them when taking the Bluetooth plug."

"Speaking of which, what happened to my plug?" Damian raised his question to me as his pedestal left the hot seat.

"It's missing. Sorry." I told him honestly.

"Damn man. That piece is expensive to replace. Though I guess it's no surprise. The culprit probably took it to hide evidence." Damian sighed out.

"There's something I wanna know. How did the culprit know that smaller soundboard would even work on the lights in the auditorium if it did come from the little theatre room on the third floor? Do you know how that is, Kai?" Luca requested.

'There must be a connection between the two rooms the culprit must have noticed. If I think back then maybe I will see it too.' I contemplated as I began thinking back as I visualized both rooms side by side. I saw the stage and its curtains, the seatings with the desks, the lighting and sound systems, and even the two soundboards.

"That's it. I know what the connection is!" I said in increasing vibrato.

"What? What's the connection?" Luca asked.

"The connection is…"

The systems are the same

The staging is the same

The setting are the same

Answer Chosen: All of the above!

"HERE'S THE TRUTH!"

"...that everything in the auditorium is the same as the little theatre!"

"It's all the same? I don't think I get it. Aren't both rooms on different floors?" Melinda petitioned, looking baffled.

I nodded at her. "Yes, that is true but hear me out. The design and color of the stage and the curtains are the same, the seats and desks are the same and the lighting and sound systems in each room are also the same brand but there is one major difference. The scale of everything in the little theatre is smaller! Smaller stage, smaller seating arrangements, and smaller systems which implies that the little theatre is a shrunken version of the auditorium. That connection means that even though the soundboard is tinier than the other one, it could still work with the light system in the auditorium stage because it's the same board either way."

"So then the killer must've seen this connection between the two rooms and used it to their advantage. But why not hide up in the Lil' theatre room? Why bring it down to the first floor where it could be more easily found?" Willie queried.

"Well, that most likely has to do with the signal that would connect the board to the system. The closer it is the stronger it is. If it's on the third floor which system is getting a stronger connection?" I asked.

"Well, that would be the one in the Lil' theatre room, right?" Willie guessed.

I nodded. "Exactly. It would be too close to the system there to connect to the one in the auditorium and I'll bet the blackened didn't want to chance it on the second floor either."

Luca gasped out, "Aha! They probably had a fifty-fifty percent chance of connecting to either system because it would be right in the middle between each floor that had a system it could connect to!"

"But the culprit couldn't take that possibility of connecting to the system in the little theatre room. That's why they had to have it on the first floor and in the auditorium to ensure the signal would be strong enough to connect." Tommy deduced.

"Whoever thought of that must be a genius!" Marcel replied in alarm.

"Well, then we know for sure you're not it, thanks to your major incompetence." Paul rolled his eyes.

Marcel looked down. "I'm not sure how to take that comment."

"My point stands," Paul added.

"Well, then we have that settled but I'm still confused as to how that power outage occurred." Tommy brought up the next topic.

"Then let's figure it out! How did that blackout happen? Ready and go!" Shana cheered out.

Non-Stop Debate

Loaded Truth Bullets: Loosened Ropes, Extra Lighting/Soundboard, Sabotaged Stage Light, and Bloody Duct Tape

"So how did the power go out? Any ideas on the matter?" Shana asked everyone.

"Perhaps someone hit the breaker?" Ollie suggested.

Luca shook his head. "But no one could see anything in that mess. I doubt the killer could find their way over and hit the switch."

"I think maybe lightning struck the school and that caused the power to go out," Melinda proposed.

"Seems unlikely a thunderstorm would have struck the school at such a precise juncture. Besides the school probably has backup generators if the entire school were to power down by a random lightning bolt but I doubt they'd come on if one place inside the school were to power off." Paul said.

"Then maybe…" Tommy started but quickly Bullet Fired: Sabotaged Stage Light

"What Tommy? What is it?" Shana begged him.

Tommy sighed. "Well, it sounds stupid but what about the lightning inside the auditorium?"

Truth Bullet Fired: Sabotaged Stage Light

"I BELIEVE YOU!"

Consent!

"Hold on, Tommy! Did you say lightning inside the school?" I asked again to be sure I heard right.

"I know, I know. It sounds ridiculous but I swear I saw some lightning during the blinding light show right before the power went out." Tommy chuckled nervously.

"No, it's not ridiculous! I know exactly what you are talking about!" I exclaimed.

"Huh? You do?" Tommy asked, surprised.

"As a matter of fact, I do. I also recall sparks of lightning that fell to the ground before the power went out. And I believe this was the lightning we saw." I replied as I brought up the photo for everyone to see.

"Isn't that the light that knocked out Melinda?" Luca asked.

"So that is why I lost my memories?" Melinda asked in tears.

"Yes and yes. I also recall hearing someone's voice when the light fell. I bet it was Melinda who had just come back to the stage, shouting about what was going on when she got clocked by the light. This light must be the answer." I informed everyone.

"Okay but how? How could this one stage light cause the entire auditorium to shut down and lose power? Can that even happen?" Shana asked me, looking puzzled.

"Actually, I already know it can!" I told her. "All the evidence is right here in this light!"

"It is? How can you be sure?" Marcel questioned me.

"There are three major points that should be noted. You can see that this lights power cord has been disconnected from the power source all lights get from and was attached to this piece of ground equipment which we found plugged into the dressing room next to the hidden soundboard. Now for the light itself, I found the bolts holding it in place were stripped and the last thing to point out is one of the leads inside was burnt off." I told them.

"Okay dude, I see those. But what I don't get is how do all these random things cause the power to get all freaky?" Marcel asked

I nodded my understanding to Marcel and began explaining, "You see, the stage light was wired with that ground equipment there and when the burned-off lead touched its luminaire frame, it caused a short circuit that tripped the breaker and caused the blackout!"

Paul smiled and nodded. "Very impressive. How did you know?"

"It was all from my knowledge of the stage equipment and the lessons I got from Terry about it. I read about common stage hazards and that's one of the most common ones but even with how common it is, I've never seen it in person before. That's why I didn't realize it sooner. The stage light sparked up and caused the short circuit and because of how detached it was, it also caused it to fall onto Melinda!"

"It should also be noted that all this equipment is supposed to be brand new and yet the burnt off lead and the stripped bolts are proof that someone deliberately weakened that light to cause the blackout." Paul quickly expanded on the subject.

"That's correct. I could tell just with the lead alone that it did not burn off naturally or gradually. It was done by someone. The culprit did that knowing the outcome of the breaker short-circuiting and causing a power surge." I replied.

"Now we know there ain't no way Marcel is the culprit. This blackened is way too smart to be able to do all this." Willie laughed out loud.

"Well, at least I do have that going for me." Marcel sighed.

"That and you were in the bathroom during the time Mikayla was murdered so you were already in the clear," Luca said to him with a warm smile.

"But you know, something just doesn't feel right." Melinda sighed out.

"Why's that?" Luca asked, looking at her.

Melinda looked up with a worried expression before she responded, "Well if the culprit did kill her at the party during this light show you keep mentioning then how was her body found on the light railing above?"

I nodded. "Melinda makes a valid point. I know for a fact that lighting takes a decent amount of time to lower and raise up with the levers backstage and the lights flashed for maybe a minute or two with the power outage only lasting roughly less than a minute. I just don't see how the killer could have killed Mikayla, lowered the lights, tired her on, and raised the lighting back up before Monokuma turned the power back on. It's just impossible."

Marcel bounced up and down. "Ohohohoh! It could explain why Mikayla was hanging off the side like you guys said you found her! Maybe the killer rushed tying her on and that's why she was hanging off!"

I shook my head. "No, that can't be right either."

I quickly loaded up the loose ropes and zoomed in on the knots. "These constrictor knots are one of the strongest knots around and not easy to tie. With how many they did it would also be impossible for them to tie that many in that small period of time. Also, the way they tied it seems intentional too since we found a weak point where Mikayla most likely broke out of."

"Broke out of? What do you mean?" Damian implored.

Suddenly my mind clicked after realizing what I said. After a brief moment to put it all together, I clapped my hands and shouted out, "That's it! That's why there were loose ropes! It wasn't because the killer rushed his knots! It's because Mikayla broke out from the one knot that was intentionally loose! In other words, she was alive when she was put up on the light railing!"

"What?! But that makes no sense!" Paul shouted.

I silently shook my head. "No, it makes perfect sense! Think about it! All those knots were tied intentionally to hold Mikayla down but from how loose we found those ropes indicated one was easily loosened! There's no one else who could have loosened it other than her!"

"But that can't be!" Paul screamed.

"Well, obviously it can!" Shana screamed back.

"How?" Paul shouted at her.

"Kai knows! Right, Kai?" Shana asked.

Marcel rubbed his head. "But then again, how can we be sure?"

"Show us proof!" Paul, Shana, and Marcel all yelled out at the same time.

Mass Panic Debate!

Truth Bullets Loaded: Shana's Account, Scratched Ball Gag, Broken Zip-tie Handcuffs, and Paul's Account

"We know Mikayla died before being placed up on top of the railing!" "I know Kai knows! He's figured out so much already and I bet I can help!" "Dude, all these theories and accusations are driving my brain wild!" Paul shouted, Shana called over, and Marcel cried out.

"That may be true but if there's a possibility that she was alive we need to find it!" "How can you help? If anything one of us men should be able to help Kai along." "Calm down, Marvel! Maybe I have the answer we need!" Luca argued, Willie scoffed, and Melinda said comfortingly.

"But there is no way! She was dead when she was up on that railing!" "Seriously, are you begging for her to strangle you?" "Um, I'm not a cinematic universe. I'm Marcel." Paul fought back, Tommy deadpanned, and Marcel retorted.

"How can you be so sure, Paul?" "Strangle is the last thing I plan on doing to this sexist creep." "Is there a difference?" Ollie inquired, Shana growled out, and Melinda shrugged.

"Because there's nothing that shows Mikayla broke free!" "I ain't no creep!" "A very big one, yes! Marvel ain't as rad and tubular as me, dude!" Paul roared out, Willie exclaimed, and Marcel cried out with a rock on hand gesture.

Truth Bullet Fired: Scratched Ball Gag

"I CAN HEAR YOU!"

"Don't tell me you've forgotten already, Paul. There is proof she broke free because the rope was not the first thing she needed to break out of." I reminded him.

Paul sneered at me which I couldn't help but smile at as I loaded up the ball gag. "See Mikayla was gagged with a ball gag, most likely from the school store. I happened to notice it was scratched and the red paint that was scratched off was found underneath her right hand's fingernails. That same hand which broke free of another restraint." I then loaded up the broken zip-tie handcuffs. "These handcuffs tied her hands together, most likely behind her back. So then this is how it went."

"She found herself on the top of the light railing and struggled to get free. But she had to break her restrictions in a specific order for her to be noticed by us. She had to break the handcuffs to get her hands freed, next was the ropes tying her down which she pushed against and soon found a knot loose enough that she could soon break, and finally remove the ball gag in a hurried manner. That's why she had to remove all her bindings for us to notice her because she was above us and out of sight." I summarized.

Paul slammed his hands against his pedestal, the force radiating throughout the courtroom. "But you're forgetting one major factor! If she was alive up on that railing then that means the culprit killed her up there! How do you explain that?"

Ollie sighed. "I hate saying this but Paul's got a valid point. If she was restrained up there and she got through all three restraints then that means the killer made their move before she could cry out for help."

"And there was no way she was bludgeoned to death while up there!" Paul quickly reinforced his earlier statement.

"Wait what?" Ollie blinked at him.

Luca looked confused as well. "She died from bludgeoning?"

"Of course she did! The Monokuma File specifically stated that!" Paul growled out.

Luca looked thoughtful. "That's funny because I didn't read it like that at all."

"He mistyped!" Paul argued.

Monokuma turned red with anger. "I did not! How dare you accuse me of bad penmanship! I'm offended! I never make any mistakes with my Monokuma Files! What you see is what I intentionally put in there!"

"He has been known to leave out important clues before which means that must be the same case here!" I calculated before…

"I will blackmail you to do my bidding!" Paul shrieked out.

"Nothing was left out! Everything we need to know is there!"

"But there is something missing from the Monokuma File. Something that would have not made this trial more interesting if it was put in." I argued.

Paul sneered. "Just shut the fuck up! You don't know shit! Unless you show me some hard evidence I will not believe a single fucking word you breathe out!"

"The Monokuma File shows us everything! It gave us the time ==/== of death! We have the cause ==/== of death too! Not to mention the location ==/== of her death as well! How can you deny that?" Paul shouted out in a blur.

"I'm not denying what we have. I'm denying what we don't have which is the cause of death not specified like everything else was!" I contended against him.

"Monokuma just doesn't want to admit he made an error! The file stated the victim suffered ==/== a head wound but it's just a dumbed-down way of saying she died from it! She had to have been murdered in ==/== the auditorium which means she could not have ==/== been bludgeoned anywhere else!" Paul wailed out.

"There was somewhere else she could have been hit at. Her dormitory is the only place she could have been hit!" I told him.

"Her… dormitory?" Paul asked, now a bit calmed down and even more dazed.

Shana spoke up. "I went to investigate her room and when I saw the blood on the floor I knew I needed to get Kai. He then found the pipe which in positive came from the school store as well."

"Man, that place is a surplus for evil, I swear." Damian spat out. "Anyway, so that means if Mikayla was killed at the auditorium then that means the head round wasn't her fatal wound!"

"That would also explain the duct tape you guys found with her hair and blood on it. It was used to keep her from bleeding out when she was carried out from her dorm to the stage." Marcel added.

"Well look at ya go, partner. You said something intelligent again. Boy, you are filled with surprises. I bet you can become real smart if ya put yourself into your homework!" Willie laughed out.

"Who knows. I hope I can." Marcel chuckled lightly.

Ollie raised her hand. "We don't have time to celebrate yet. The head wound is the only physical wound she suffered, yes? Then will someone please tell me what was her cause of death?"

Luca went deep into thought but groaned, "It's not possible! The only other injuries she suffered were the bruisings she got on her body. And if bruises killed then I would be dead years and years ago."

I growled out in annoyance as I gripped my head, thinking, 'This can't be how it ends! We are getting so close to discovering the truth! Maybe if I look over the evidence one more time I can find something we overlooked.'

"So is this it, man? Are we really out of ideas? Dude, this can't be my last wave man! I'm not ready to die! Surely, we can think of something!" Marcel cried out.

"Maybe we need to look over the file again. Perhaps the clue to Mikayla's cause of death is hidden inside." Ollie suggested.

"But the only injuries it lists off are the head wound and the bruises! Dude, we're so done for!" Marcel shouted out in hopelessness.

Luca sighed. "I think I saw something about her heart beating erratically but I don't see how that helps since it was obvious she was scared."

Truth Bullet Fired: Shana's Account

"I BELIEVE YOU!"

"Wait, Luca! What did you say?" I asked him.

"What did I say?" Luca said.

I then looked at Shana. "Shana, what was it you said that Mikayla said?"

Shana squinted at me. "What are you going on about, Kai!? You're not making any damn sense!"

I quickly opened up Shana's testimony and fast-forwarded to the part I needed to hear. "She soon cracked open the door and said, "I'm sorry for shoving you last night but I don't think I can be helped right now. My personal demons won't leave me alone and I doubt anyone can help, even you and Kai can't do anything for me. Not yet. Please just leave me be.""

I then thought back to when I saw her last. "But Mikayla you said you wanted this. To improve yourself so you could live your life to the fullest extent for them. They would want you to go."

She turned her back to me so I couldn't see her face. "It's not possible. I can't go."

"Yes, you can. Please don't do this to me and the others and especially not to yourself! It's not healthy…" I started saying with my hand on her arm but she suddenly forced herself away from me.

"No! You couldn't understand! You don't know anything about what's healthy for me! You know nothing!"

What was healthy for her and what wasn't, what personal demons she was dealing with, refusing to go to the party, the erratic heartbeat. I felt the wood in my pedestal creak as my grip tightened hard beyond comprehension on it as I felt like I was breaking my own hands. Tears began streaming down my face as I looked up.

"Kai? What's wrong?" Luca asked me concerned, his voice quiet and gentle.

"I know what killed Mikayla," I sniffled out as my gaze fell to my feet before I muttered out, "She died from a seizure."

Class Trial Intermission

I got it done! Part 1 of 2 for the class trial! I hope did well! It took me a bit mapping of how the truth bullets would line up and what would help the story progress without getting into too deep of spoilers for the trial. It was honestly difficult but I think I know how this will go from this point on! I'll be sure to work ok the next chapter fast so I don't lose my map. But until then please leave a review and tell me if I did well and if any assumptions you made in the investigation were correct or not. What did you think of the ending and what do you think will happen next? These are things I wanna know so until next time! Take care! Puhuhuhu~
