Chapter 1:
It was 7 in the evening, the chill of winter had started to settle as the sun retreated to the horizon. Two children crouched under the light of the street lamp, the thick fog in the dark formed a hallow around them, making them look like an illusion to any onlooker.
They were talking in hushed whisper. One was crying while the other was trying to soothe him. The fiery red hair of young boy with sapphire eyes were glazed with tears. He was holding a small and ragged teddy bear in his dirty arms. He shivered as a cool breeze blew by.
"Do you understand what I'm saying Tala?," the other boy said gripping Tala's shoulder firmly. The other boy was significantly older, his platinum blonde hair were matted with red color. His brows were knitted in determination, but his wide terrified eyes betrayed the expression.
Whatever the older boy said seemed to be muffled, his voice was coming from a far, his lips were moving and he could hear the sound, but the words were lost to him, as if someone had muted it on purpose.
But he nodded involuntarily, as if the action was a default function. They hugged one last time, and Tala didn't need sound to make out his last words.
"Run"
And he did, his body moved on its own, there was a blinding flash of white, sirens ringing, sound of feet slapping on the pavement. Tala ran away from it, as far as he could, his vision was blurry he made it to a dark alley slumping in a corner. His body was shaking with sobs and somewhere at a turn he had lost the last evidence of their existence.
He was scared and hungry.
Suddenly a taxi stopped at the alley and a man stepped out, he was a large figure, with purple hair and a wise face. He gave him a knowing look and said, "Wake up, Tala!"
The world got fuzzy, and he felt as if someone had poured cold water on him.
Tala woke up with a start. Shivering and covered with a sheen layer of sweat. He saw that horrific dream again. No matter how much he tried to run away from it, that haunting image of his past always seemed to catch up with him. He poured himself a glass of water and slowly drank it up. He would not be going to sleep after that nightmare. Night after night they came to haunt him. Like they were warning him for an upcoming danger. But he shrugged them off thinking they were just haunting memories.
It's been a while, since he had seen that face in his dreams. Tala couldn't remember who the boy was, but he felt somehow related to him, maybe a relative. It doesn't even matter now, too much time had passed and every tie to his family, if there ever was, had vanished.
His phone buzzed, pulling him out of his thought process.
There was a text from Ian.
-Meet us at the usual place there is something you need to see.
This better be worth it, he was already in a bad mood.
The place looked dusty and rusted as usual, he went between old concrete pipes that had been put in a cluster on purpose, and reached a trap door. By putting his hand in a slim hole and rotating it in a certain way, he was able to pass from that trap door. He reached the old warehouse, that they had used as their secret hideout, now only Ian lived here, doing god knows what.
Tala came across another trap door, which looked a lot better than the previous one and swiped the key card. It opened and Tala descended the iron ladder attached to the wall. Once he was inside, he found Ian staring at his tablet and chewing on a screwdriver. He stood up and nodded him to another room.
This room looked like an old security control room, Tala was a little surprised to see Spencer and Bryan here.
"When did you guys came?" Tala asked.
"We've been in the city for a week," said Bryan.
"Wow, and no one told me. I'm hurt." He said with a deadpanned expression, earning an unamused snort in return.
"We weren't planning to show up, this was last minute," said Bryan.
Meanwhile Ian opened a video showing a white haired man in his late twenties snooping around the warehouse.
"This guys had been looking around. He found the trap door but of course he didn't have the key. Someone is looking for us."
"Or he could be looking for junk to sold, you hoard a lot of garbage here." Tala said. He stared at the screen it was hard to make out the man's face.
"It's not a joke, someone was following Spencer in Germany, tell him." said Ian, trying to defend himself.
" That's why I called Bryan. Someone was tracing us here too, at first we didn't thought much of it, but then Ian called, it can't be coincidence," said Spencer.
"And guess what happened to this guy over here." Ian motioned to the screen, "He's dead."
Tala had an uneasy feeling in his stomach, he was not superstitious by any means but this looked like a sign for something bad. No one knew about this place except them, not even Kai.
"So, what do we do?"
"Why are you asking me?" Tala asked.
"Weren't you supposed to be the great leader?"
"That was when we were kids, now is different, besides the guy is dead. What more can a dead body do?"
"You forgot what happened last time?"
"Tsk," he couldn't forget the last time, no one could.
"Interrupting the intellectual conversation here, I say we meet this guy," said Bryan with a maniac smile.
"Like you know anything about that. How do you meet the dead body?"
"No one claimed the body, so it's in the morgue."
"If we can figure out who this guy was or why he was looking for us? Then maybe we can make something of this , before situation gets out of our hand," said Spencer, concluding the meeting.
"Whatever," Tala stared at the screen.
Tala had mixed feelings about this but they were already at the door of the morgue center where the dead body of that white-haired man was kept. They pushed the door open and entered the dimly lit place. Everything there was white, from the tiles on the floor to the painted walls and drapes. It certainly looked like a place where they would keep dead bodies. There was a counter on the other side of which an old, frail man was sitting who looked to be near his own death. Spencer moved towards the counter where they showed them the picture of dead boy. They had managed to take the picture from the video and then after lots of research they found out the guy's name was Michael Phillips. Tala kept thinking that he knew that guy from somewhere but couldn't pinpoint it.
"Sir the body of this man would be here, right?" Spencer asked with a dejected tone like he was really tired and sad over the dead body. 'Sad, my ass' Tala thought inwardly.
"Tell me his name, son. " The frail man said with a rather shrill voice for a man.
"Michael Phillips." It was Bryan who said the name this time. Shrilly voice began searching for that name in his equally old computer.
"Yes. Yes, his name is here. Poor guy committed suicide four days ago," That was a shocker to Tala. That man has committed suicide. It was something he was having hard time digesting. There was more to this picture then they thought," What is your relationship with that guy?"
"We're his friends."Spencer quickly answered wanting to get it over with and also noticing the slight pissed-off look of Bryan.
"So where were you guys when he committed suicide?" Was his another question.
Tala who has been quite this whole time replied this time, " We were in another country didn't have any idea Mike was going to do something this stupid. I mean, we were friends. he should've at least told one of us about his problems." Tala exaggerated a bit so Shrilly Voice would believe him and let them do their thing.
" But why didn't you guys com-"When he opened his mouth to utter another question, Bryan beat him to it.
"FOR GOODNESS SAKE , WE'RE HERE TO SEE OUR DEAD FRIEND, NOT TO GET INTERROGATED!" He all but yelled at him.
"I'm sorry. That was really insensitive of me. Come, I'll show you his corpse."
"Well that was convenient" Tala thought
He stood up onb his weak legs and started leading the way, by entering into more white hallways. He opened the door to a room where there were lockers of some type, like the one you would expect to see in a bank's treasury. Shrilly Voice opened one of the steel lockers and pulled out the sliding container that hold the body and then left the room.
If Tala was not very focused on the body covered with white cloth , he would have noticed that the frail man had gone out and dialed a number.
"Yes Sir, Four young men are here. Yes Sir, I did the same as you said. Okay."
We just started it in a forum as writing tag and then just converted it into a story. The first half would be available on my account under my name while the second half would be on Roll's account. So don't stop reading it just because we shifted it.
It's a very new genre for me BUT Rolly supported me and we have made it this far ( this far means posting it actually) So YAY Rolly.
So guys , this is the chapter 1 of Revenge. I hope you guys like it because we put a lot of effort in here. And we practically edited it hundreds of time. First me , then Rolls then again me. So yeah.
Do read and review. Tell us about your thoughts.
Lots of love! From both of us :)
