Six months later
Miles walked down the street of Manhatten and looked around for any trouble to take care of. But once again, there were none. It seemed like nobody wanted to commit crimes lately. Not that that was a bad thing though; it just made Miles extremely bored now.
Miles kept walking around and saw a bakery store that smelled of freshly baked sweets. He looked into the window of the store and saw treats everywhere and considered heavily to walk in.
I mean, since there's no need for Spiderman at the moment, that means I can cheat a little on the diet, right?
Miles continued drooling at the sight of pink and blue frosting on top of numerous sweet treats from small cupcakes to gigantic wedding cakes.
Right.
Miles almost ran in with anticipation. He looked around the whole store to see his option then checked his pockets to see how much change he had.
One ten, a five, four singles, and 4 quarters. A perfect twenty dollars. Miles smiled to himself and knew immediately what he wanted to buy.
He grabbed two cartons of 10 cupcakes each, one for himself and one for his parents. He counted up the prices and saw that he still had eight dollars left.
Why let good money go to waste? Anything else I can buy?
He continued looking around until he found it.
Jackpot
He smiled and grabbed the large pound cake that was drizzled in icing with sliced strawberries placed perfectly in center. The perfect treat to last him and his parents (mostly him) for at least a week. And the best part? It was 8 dollars exactly.
Miles eagerly grabbed all of his items and made his way over to the cash register to pay for his overexcessively sweet treats. There, a woman scanned his items and bagged them up before telling Miles how much he needed to pay.
"That'll be $21.77 dear." She said in a sweet tone.
21? Why is it over 20?
Then Miles remembered. Taxes. He mentally groaned before taking the cake out of the bag.
"I don't have enough for that. Could you take this out of the purchase please?" Miles asked and handed the cake over to the cashier.
"Of course." She said in her sweet tone and was about to grab the cake until a hand suddenly appeared.
"No, it's ok. You can add his items to my purchase." A gentle voice said from behind Miles. Miles turned and saw a beautiful girl that was about his height standing there with long, black, straight hair, brown eyes, a slim figure, light brown skin, a pair of glasses that she wore that only seemed to complete her look, and a kind face that was smiling warmly at him.
"Alrighty then," the cashier's voice broke Miles out of his daze, "I'll cancel his purchase and add his items to your bill then."
"Thank you." The girl said. Her voice sounded like it was always singing to Miles and he didn't know if he would ever get over it, and he didn't even know her name.
She finished her purchase and gave Miles' items back to him before walking out out of the store with him. He didn't know why, but he felt like he should walk with her. So they walked together awkwardly for a while as Miles tried to sort himself out and figure out what he should do next.
Should I ask her out? No, that seems kind of creepy. She probably doesn't even like me. But why would she pay for my stuff then? Is there a chance? Maybe there is. I should at least try. I should start off slow first though.
"Thank you." Miles finally said.
"Your welcome. Seemed like you could've used some help there." She smiled at him and kept walking.
Miles eventually paused a little behind her to take out the pound cake and handed it to her. "I feel like I should give this to you for paying for me."
The girl looked at it before shaking her head. "Keep it. You don't need to give me anything."
Miles put it away and took out the carton of cupcakes. "At least let me give you some cupcakes. I insist."
The girl rolled her eyes but smiled while she did so. "Alright fine. But just one. I don't want to take too much of your food."
Miles scoffed. "Believe me, you probably should take all of them, it'd be better for my health."
The girl giggled and took the cupcake Miles handed her and bit into it as Miles began eating his. By now, they had wandered into the middle of Central Park and were all alone to eat in silence. Though Miles couldn't tell if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
"This tastes so good. You have great taste in choosing these things." She moaned at the taste of the baked good as she took another bite.
Miles agreed. These were the best cupcakes he had ever eaten. Miles took another bite and swallowed before asking the question he didn't even know why he never asked yet. "So, um, I don't think you ever told me your name yet."
"Lizette Laring. What's yours?"
"Miles Morales."
"That's a nice name Miles." Lizette said sweetly.
Miles felt himself freeze after that.
That was a compliment right? Does that mean she likes me? I can't tell.
Even through all these doubts, Miles could practically feel all of instincts plus spider senses screaming at him to ask her.
Just before he could do anything though, he felt something tap his shoulder and turned around to see Miguel standing there.
"Miguel?" Miles asked.
"Yeah, hey Miles, could I talk to you for a minute?"
Miles slowly nodded but turned to Lizette. "Sorry, I just need to talk to my friend. Could you give me a minute?"
Lizette nodded. Miles turned and walked with Miguel until they were out of earshot of Lizette "What is it? I'm kind of busy right now." Miles asked kind of harshly.
Miguel rolled eyes. "Jeez, sorry Miles, didn't mean to ruin your date."
Miles felt some blood rush to his face at the mention of him being on a date with Lizette. "This is not a date."
Miguel scoffed. "My bad, didn't mean to crash the proposal, make sure you invite me." Miles felt even more blood rush. Miguel laughed a little before quickly turning serious again. "Listen, I just wanted to let you know that I've heard some spiders report that they caught quick glimpses of somebody with a fishbowl helmet. Sound familiar?"
"Mysterio." Miles spat.
Miguel nodded. "Yeah, after the events of you-know-what, I thought he died with you-know-who but looks like I'm wrong. It's not enough sightings to plan to attack, but I'm going to keep a close eye on these sightings. I'll give you a call if anything big shows up. Call me if you see anything. Don't do anything stupid and rush at him if you see him. Got it?"
Miles nodded.
"Good. I'm going to tell the others the same thing."
"I'll go with you." Miles volunteered.
Miguel shook his head. "No. What you're going to do is get a second chance with that girl over there." Miguel pointed to Lizette who wasn't paying much attention to them and was lazily looking at her phone. "I could hear your conversation with her. You two deserve each other. Life doesn't give you many second chances. Take them when it does."
Miles stood in shock at the sudden intensity he spoke with but nodded anyways. "I will."
Miguel smiled a little bit. "Good luck." Miles nodded again and turned around to start walking towards Lizette. "Remember," Miguel called out to him, "nothing stupid."
"Yeah yeah." Miles said and walked away. While he did, he started to think over Miguel's words. He definitely was still hurting over Gwen but he noticed the way Miguel talked and Mile's knew that he was fairing much worst than he was. He knew it had something to do with the whole "second chance" thing since Miguel had suffered numerous heartbreacks but seemed to always get another get another chance. But now, according to him, it was his final chance and he failed.
What did bother Miles is whether he really should ask out Lizette. She seemed like a really nice person, but he couldn't help but feel like he would be disrespecting Gwen by doing so.
Before he knew it though, he already was standing in front of her and had her attention. Miles took one look at her beautiful face and knew the answer.
Take the second chance.
"Hey, I was wondering if maybe we could, you know, go out sometime? Not like as a date or anything, but like you know, spend more time together, know each other better, be, like, friends."
Jeez, that was almost as awkward as they "hey" incident.
Miles expected the laugh of mockery to come soon but he never heard any. Instead, he saw a smile creep up on her face.
"Sure, I'd love to. Could I have your phone number so I could text you amd figure out the time?"
Miles was shocked. He had no idea that she would actually agree. "Yeah sure." Miles took out his phone. "It's (insert random phone number idk)"
"Got it, thanks. I have to go now but I'll text you later. Bye for now."
"Yeah, bye."
Lizette started walking away before turning around to face him as she walked backwards. "Just make sure you don't eat all that stuff yourself!" And with that, she disappeared into the trees and made her way to wherever she lived.
Miles was smiling uncontrollably. He took the second chance and he felt a huge burden lift out of his heart. Yes, there were millions of questions that needed to be answered, his identity as Spiderman the biggest, but it didn't matter right now. Because he knew that if she was the right one, it would all work out. And Miles had a hunch that she just might be it.
