Jonathan Creek – A long way home

Chapter 11:

"What's going on?"

"I don't know" Sally said as Jonathan went to sit down, feeling slightly bemused.

"I'll go get you a cup of tea and we will have a chat, okay"

"Yeah, Thanks"

Back upstairs, David approached the bathroom door, opening it slowly, he could see Maddie bent over the toilet, being sick. He sat down next to her and started to gentle rub her back.

"Are you okay?" He asked with a look of concern on his face.

Maddie suddenly sat back collapsing against the bath, looking so pale.

"I'm so Sorry" She said gasping for breath as tears started falling down her cheeks fast. She was in such a shock; he was the last person she ever expected to see again and after so long. So much had happened between them, and seeing him again just brought it all back, all the hurt and pain.

"Hey, you have nothing to say Sorry for"

"I didn't realise he was your son, its been so long since I've seen him and it just brought a lot of stuff back"

"Anything you want to talk about?"

David said knowing there was more to this than meets the eye.

"It was just a shock and…. I'm sorry"

The tears kept coming, flooding her face.

David grabbed a tissue from a nicely decorated floral box they had in the bathroom and handed it to Maddie.

"As you can see Sally likes pretty frilly things to decorate the bathroom, Why you need a pretty box to decorate you tissues is beyond me, you know if she could have her way she would have one of those old woollen doll toilet roll covers, yuk"

He said trying to lighten the mood and raise a smile. It caused a small smile to form on her lips, which was a start. She wiped away her tears, from her cheeks and tried to compose herself a bit more.

"I'm so sorry, I should just go, I'm ruining your evening"

"Nooo, not at all, we are just worried about you, we just want to make sure you're okay"

He said as he stood up and went to grab something out of the mirrored cabinet that hung above the sink. Maddie glanced up as he took out some pills

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah I'm fine"

He said as he grabbed a glass from the sink, got some water and threw back a few pills.

"I just have a bad knee, it's an old injury I had years ago, it just plays up from time to time, especially as I'm getting older, so these are just painkillers to help with the discomfort"

"Do they help?"

"Oh yes they do, there strong tablets, they really help take the pain away, which makes it easier for me to get around"

He said as he replaced the box back in the cupboard.

"So do you want to talk about what's got you so upset or…..?..."

"No I'm fine, I'm sorry, I'll just compose myself and then I'll come down"

"Okay" David said nodding his head, he would leave it for now.

"Well if you ever need to chat then we are here okay"

He said with that warm caring smile he had.

"Yes of course Thank you"

She said forcing a smile as he left.
