At the school, now on the docks by the lake, Penelope has tied Landon to a glass orb that is resting on Landon's jacket, which is set in between them.
"Okay. what's your name?" Penelope asks a simple question, seeming a little less bored than earlier.
"Landon Kirby." Landon responds to the question and the orb glows blue.
"See, that means you've told the truth. Now, tell a lie. What's your favorite food?" Penelope tells Landon that if the orb glows blue, he's telling the truth then demands he lie before asking another question.
"Rabbit." Landon gives an answer, looking nostalgic about it, and the orb glows red.
"That was a lie." Penelope informs him that if the orb glows red, he's lying.
"So, it's pretty much a supernatural lie detector?" Landon summarizes what the orb is and Penelope gives him a mocking smile.
"Yeah, literally everyone's worst nightmare." Penelope makes the snarky comment that it's everyone's nightmare, not just his.
"Eh, bring it on, Penelope." Landon challenges Penelope to bring the questions with a chill tone of voice.
So, Penelope interrogates Landon about his life and why he can't be compelled, each of his answers making the orb glow blue, which seems to annoy Penelope until she sees that she lost his attention.
"Earth to Landon." Penelope calls out to him, getting his attention again.
"What were you doing?" Penelope asks Landon what he was doing and he blinks a few times before replying.
"Oh, I'm sorry. It's just… you're really pretty." Landon apologizes before trailing off then saying what's on his mind, implying that he thinks Penelope's attractive causing her to blush slightly as the orb glows blue yet again after he says this.
"I need you to focus. Not like it matters, the orb isn't enough. If we can't find out what species you are, you can't stay at the school." Penelope redirects his attention to the tests then states that his answers aren't good enough in helping find out about him, which makes Landon gulp nervously at this reminder.
Back at Dorian's cabin, the moment seems to not be the same, with the dryad being very upset and confused that Oliver has no memory of her.
"In the forest, there was clearing next to the river. The bed would blossom with daffodils every spring." the dryad tries to jog Oliver's memory by bringing up a clearing and he smiles at the mention of this.
"Yeah, I walk there every day. It's where I proposed to my wife." Oliver confesses that he has a wife, which emotionally affects the dryad and Hope, who continues to watch sadly as this scene unfolds.
"You are married…" the dryad seems stunned and heartbroken by this fact as Oliver simply nods in agreement.
"Yeah… why did you ask me about the clearing?" Oliver agrees then asks why the dryad brought up the clearing, clearly confused and the dryad seems to realize something.
"I'm sorry. I made a mistake. I thought you were someone else." the dryad apologizes to Oliver, claiming that she made a mistake and lets Oliver return to his life while Hope feels a lot of sympathy towards the dryad at the current moment.
Oliver leaves as the dryad goes back to sitting on the chair she has within her boundary spell.
"I'll be right back." Hope makes the announcement that she'll return then leaves the cabin and heads over to Alaric's car, pulling out her phone.
"Hey, Dr. Saltzman." Hope greets the person who answers the phone, having called Alaric.
"Hey, how's the interrogation going?" Alaric returns the greeting before wondering how far she got with the dryad.
"It's, um, coming along. So, did you find a witch to run Landon's 23andMe?" Hope gives a vague answer to Ric's question before asking one of her own.
"Yeah, Penelope Park agreed to do the tests." Alaric reveals that Penelope is in charge of Landon and he can hear Hope laugh incredulously.
"Penelope? How'd you manage to get her to agree?" Hope sounds disbelieving that Ric got Penelope to agree to run the tests.
"I didn't. Uh, Josie actually convinced her to run the 23andMe." Alaric admits that he isn't responsible for Penelope running Landon's tests but instead, Josie is.
"She must have made one hell of an argument. So, I've come to a conclusion about why no one remembers the creatures we've faced thus far." Hope assumes that Josie made a good argument in getting Penelope to agree then turns the topic to the creatures they've faced so far.
"What kind of conclusion?" Alaric questions what conclusion Hope's reached and he hears her sigh.
"Well, the gist of it is that something, or someone, is wiping their existence from everybody's subconscious." Hope just simply gives a summary of her conclusion, which gets Alaric thinking.
"It sounds impossible but sometimes, things that sound impossible just means they are more capable of happening, so. Are you okay? You sound distant." Alaric voices his opinion on the fact it sounds impossible before wondering if Hope's okay, as she sounds distant.
"Sorry, I'm just kind of having a day. Ooh, the dryad I'm interrogating made a deal that if we found her lover, she'd give us information. We found the lover, only to discover that he's married to someone else and has absolutely no memory of the dryad." Hope sighs as she apologizes for sounding distant, stating that she's having a day, then informs him of what recently happened.
"Huh, I'm assuming that's where your conclusion comes in?" Alaric seems surprised by what Hope's shared then makes an assumption of her conclusion coming into focus.
"Yeah, there might be a witch, or something, that's wiping everyone's memories. What are you doing?" Hope agrees with his assumption then asks what he's doing as she can clearly hear something.
"Research. I am pouring myself over various lores. You know, so if another creature comes for the knife…" Alaric trails off after explaining what he's doing and Hope is able to fill in the blanks.
"Then we'll know what we're up against. Smart and two steps ahead. I'm surprised that I didn't think of it." Hope finishes his thought then expresses her shock that she didn't plan on doing what he's doing sooner which has Alaric chuckle at the response.
"Hey, do you think I should call my aunt?" Hope asks if she should call her aunt which makes Alaric confused.
"Why?" Alaric voices his confusion, not sure why Hope would call her aunt.
"It's just… we might be dealing with some mega-powerful witch whose powers are capable of wiping the existence of, probably more beings than the ones we've faced. I think having a powerful one-thousand year old witch will be very helpful. Or my uncle, he may be a vampire but he's also one-thousand years old with a ton of knowledge. He's smart. Maybe a little too smart, dare I say intelligent, for his own good." Hope briefly hesitates before mentioning that her aunt may be helpful or her uncle.
"Uh, what else did you get from your uncle?" Alaric questions what else Hope got from her uncle, implying that he believes she's too intelligent for her own good as well, which earns a warm-hearted laugh from Hope.
"If anything, I only got my uncle's hair color but I appreciate the ego boost." Hope clarifies that she only got her hair color from her uncle yet expresses her appreciation with his compliment.
"Um, I'd hold off on calling your family for now. I'm sure you'll get some answers from the dryad." Alaric suggests that she doesn't call her family for help just yet, showing some positivity in the fact she'll get answers and Hope thinks for a moment before changing topics.
"So, what lore are you researching currently?" Hope changes the subject by questioning what Alaric is reading as they speak on the phone and he sighs.
"Arthurian lore, apparently." Alaric replies with what he's reading, which gives Hope a very curious look.
"What? You think Merlin is going to come for some ancient knife relic?" Hope's tone is sarcastic as she wonders if Alaric believes that the immortal Merlin will come for their knife.
"You can never be too careful. I mean, we faced a dragon, a gargoyle, a body-inhabiting spider, and now a dryad. I wouldn't put anything against Merlin, just yet." Alaric lists off the creatures that they've faced after advising they can't be too careful then states that he isn't crossing Merlin off the list just yet and he can hear Hope chuckle slightly.
"Seems like a safe bet. Maybe when I get back, I can help you with research. Look, I was thinking and I want a spot on the honor's council." Hope simply agrees with Alaric's logic then suggests that she helps with research when she returns before saying what's on her mind.
"Really? Does this decision have anything to do with Landon?" Alaric sounds surprised that Hope would want to be a part of the honor's council then asks if it has to do with Landon.
"No, it doesn't. I'm a tribrid and the only one of my kind. No one can represent my interests but me." Hope makes it clear that it has nothing to do with Landon and she wants a chance to represent her interests.
"Well, that's something to be discussed on a later date. I postponed the election in order to give the students more time to vote so you can speak your piece tomorrow." Alaric admits that he postponed the election in order to give more time to students who don't do well with one day projects and also assures Hope that she can take part in the council when she returns due to the postponement.
"I should probably get back in there. Have fun with your research and don't forget to sleep." Hope concludes that she should get back in the cabin then advises Alaric to have fun reading before telling him not to forget sleeping.
"Says the person who doesn't sleep." Alaric mocks Hope's words of telling him to sleep, reminding her that she doesn't even sleep.
"Call ending now." Hope makes the retort that the call's ending before hanging up and sliding the phone in her jacket pocket.
Hope walks back into the cabin, where Dorian and the dryad are still sitting where she left them.
"Who'd you call?" Dorian wonders who Hope called as she pulled her phone from her pocket before she left.
"Dr. Saltzman. I was just updating him on some things." Hope responds to the question in a slightly vague manner then walks over to the window and opens it, allowing breeze to come through.
"Oh, that breeze is lovely. Thank you, Hope." the dryad thanks Hope for opening the window after claiming that the breeze feels nice.
Hope then makes her way to sit across from the dryad again, clearly contemplating on what to say.
"You held up your end of the deal, it is only fair that I hold up mine. What do you wish to know?" the dryad asks them what they want to know after concluding that she should hold up her end of the deal as they had held up their end.
Hope and Dorian exchange glances of shock, not expecting this response to come from the dryad.
Back at the school, Landon has just walked away from Penelope after having an argument, in which he apologized for stealing the knife as well as betraying and endangering the entire school, being truthful when saying that he doesn't want to do it again.
However, Landon eventually runs into Jed, who has a hoodie on and looks like he got beaten up.
"Oh, hey Jed." Landon just dully greets him, due to the day he's had but Jed looks angry.
"You don't belong here." Jed bitterly states that Landon doesn't belong at the school and Landon just laughs nervously at this.
"Yeah, that's what everyone keeps saying." Landon just simply agrees with Jed's words, acknowledging that everyone has been saying it.
"Everything was fine before you and Rafael showed up." Jed angrily claims that everything was fine before him as he threateningly approaches Landon, who senses that they're about to fight.
"Wait! Wait!" Landon puts his hands up in a nonthreatening manner, trying to back away from Jed.
Jed goes to punch Landon, who manages to defend himself by grabbing Jed's forearm then flipping him on his back and it's obvious by Landon's surprised facial expression, he didn't know he was capable of doing that.
Unfortunately with him distracted, Jed takes the opportunity to muster up his strength and kick Landon very hard in the abdomen, sending him flying across nearly half the yard then he meets up with him, leaping to the same distance with his werewolf agility.
Landon has rolled over a hill, still lying there when Jed makes his appearance and he continues to beat Landon to a near pulp before finally leaving the situation.
Landon lies on the grass with a bloody mouth, nose, and scraped cheek, his injuries leaving him unable to move.
Penelope has just made it to the area where Jed beat up Landon, having heard the commotion but realizes that she's too late as she sees Landon lying on the grass, completely bloodied.
"Oh god." Penelope looks very shocked by Landon's condition and rushes over to his aid, despite the fact that she claimed she hated him earlier in the day.
Penelope eventually takes Landon back to his dorm room, where she bandages him up and Rafael soon enters the room, infuriated.
"I'm going to kill Jed." Rafael angrily declares that he will kill Jed and Penelope rolls her eyes at this.
"No, you're not." Penelope is annoyed with Rafael's anger, simply stating that he isn't going to kill Jed.
"Why not?" Rafael looks angered by Penelope's response, which has her roll her eyes again.
"Do you want to stay at this school? Because there is a rule that cold-blooded killers aren't allowed here and I don't think you want that reputation." Penelope retorts with a question on if Rafael wants to stay at the school then explains that there's a rule that involves no killing, which slightly calms Rafael down.
"I just want to help him with his bully." Rafael admits that he wants to help Landon with the bully that he's gained, clearly believing that killing Jed is the only way, this response seems to soften Penelope, who sighs and whose tone is softer when she speaks.
"You want to help? Go to the herb garden and get me some hazel-wood root." Penelope demands that Rafael go get her an herb after wondering if he actually wanted to help.
Without another word, a still mildly angry Rafael leaves the room to do as Penelope asked of him and Landon looks at Penelope curiously once he's gone.
"What does hazel-wood root do?" Landon decides to ask what the herb she sent Rafael to go get does, causing Penelope to walk over and sit next to him as she shrugs cutely.
"Calm him down before he realizes that I made it up." Penelope simply responds with a mildly devious answer and smirk which has Landon chuckle softly.
"Well, I guess we can cross supernatural healing off the list." Penelope deduces that they can cross super healing off the list as she checks the bandage covering the laceration on his forehead.
"Look, I know that you want to stay here Landon but everyone here is very capable of doing what Jed did. Albeit, others have more control than he does usually. I mean, you can't honestly think that you're safe here, do you?" Penelope seems to be showing a lot of concern towards Landon's well-being, despite her words before they even started the tests, as she asks if he truly feels safe at the school.
"Yes, I do." Landon makes a firm statement that he feels safe at the school, determined to want to stay, and Penelope feels that something's off but doesn't bring it up.
"You should rest." Penelope advises that Landon rests, ignoring her feeling of something being off, then leaves to the dorm room so Landon can sleep.
At the cabin, Dorian has shot the dryad in the chest with a crossbow after she attacked and tried to get the knife.
Hope and Dorian both rush to the dryad instead of protecting the knife, hating the fact they had to kill the dryad even though they didn't have another choice.
"Please… take me to the daffodils. Take me home." the dryad pleads that they take her home to the daffodils while both Hope and Dorian try not to cry.
"You do it. I have to get back to the school." Hope suggests that Dorian be responsible for taking the dryad home, claiming that she has to go back to the school and Dorian nods in agreement.
"Alright. I'll meet you back there." Dorian verbally agrees to the deal and assures Hope that he'll see her at the school.
Hope nods at this then stands to her feet and walks out to head to the car.
After getting in the car, Hope takes out her phone so she can call Josie, as she's leaving.
"Hey, Josie." Hope greets Josie, who's on the other line once she picks up the phone.
"Hey, Hope. Are you on your way back?" Josie is relieved that Hope has called as she wonders if she is on her way back.
"Yeah, I'm in the car as we speak and starting it now." Hope confirms that she is heading back as she starts the car, only to groan in annoyance.
"What is it?" Josie's tone immediately turns to concern the second she hears Hope groan loudly.
"Oh nothing, the car's just nearly out of gas. I'll have to stop at a gas station but I should be at the school in no time." Hope claims it's nothing before saying that the car is almost out of gas but assures Josie that despite the side-stop, she should be at the school soon.
"So, what happened on your trip?" Josie decides to ask what happened on Hope's trip which causes Hope to sigh sadly.
"Um, I'll tell you all about it once I get back. I have to go, the signal's crappy up here." Hope exclaims that she'll tell Josie about the trip once she returns then says that the call has to end as she has a crappy signal.
"Okay. Bye." Josie agrees with the call ending and says goodbye.
"Bye." Hope returns the goodbye and they both hang up the phone.
Hope drives for an hour before she finally reaches a gas station and she smiles at the sight of it.
She pulls into the station, parks the car before turning it off, and heads into the building to use the bathroom.
Hope walks out of the station and heads over to the pump she parked by in order to fill the car with gas.
After a moment, Hope's phone starts ringing so she answers it just as she takes a sip of the slushie she got from the building.
"Hello?" Hope greets the person with a hello even though she didn't even look at the caller id of who was calling.
"Hey, it's me. Again." Josie's voice comes through the phone.
"Hi. Why are you calling?" Hope wonders why Josie's calling, not sounding annoyed in any way.
"Oh, I was just checking in. You sound better, in a 'your voice isn't breaking up and static-y' way." Josie admits that she just wanted to check in then makes the compliment that Hope's side of the phone sounds better.
"That's because I am at a gas station now and not in the woods." Hope explains why her side of the phone is no longer static-y before taking a sip of her slushie, which Josie can hear.
"What's that noise?" Josie questions what the noise she hears is and it stops.
"My slushie." Hope replies to the question and there's silence on the other end.
"What? I am only making the one side-stop and I saw that they had a slushie machine. Stop judging." Hope demands Josie stop judging her after explaining why she has a slushie.
"I'm not judging." Josie claims that she isn't judging but Hope just scoffs at this.
"I can see you judging me from here." Hope exclaims that she can see Josie judging her, despite the fact that they're on opposite ends of the phone, causing Josie to throw one arm in the air as though she's mildly annoyed.
"Wait, why are you whispering?" Hope has just realized that Josie's been whispering the entire time and decides to question it.
"I don't want Lizzie to know I'm calling someone. Speaking of, Lizzie is practicing a speech." Josie quickly explains why she's whispering then informs Hope that Lizzie's reciting a speech.
"She's practicing victory speeches?" Hope questions if Lizzie's practicing a victory speech.
"No, she's not. I convinced her to make a speech that promotes herself as worthy of being a good candidate, seeing as how my dad postponed the event happening for today." Josie declines that Lizzie's doing a victory speech and says that she convinced her twin to practice a promotion speech.
"Oh, how is that going?" Hope wonders how the speech is going which causes Josie to sigh in exasperation.
"It's, uh, it's going somewhere." Josie says that the speech is going somewhere in an unconvincing tone.
"That bad?" Hope sees through Josie's unconvincing tone of voice.
"It's just… the speech is so…" Josie hesitates first before trailing off and Hope fills in the blank, seeming to know what Josie wants to say.
"Self-centered." Hope speaks Josie's mind by saying that the speech is self-centered.
"Very. I don't think she knows it's supposed to be a responsible speech." Josie agrees that the speech is very self-centered as the moment focuses on Hope, who removes the pump from the car as filling up the tank is done.
"Josie! Are you taking a dump?" Lizzie's voice can be heard on Josie's side of the phone as she asks her sister if she's taking a dump.
"I have to go." Josie realizes that the call has to end and Hope nods.
"Alright. Uh, I'm going to find a back-road in order to cut my time down." Hope confirms the fact that the call should end but assures Josie that she's gonna find a back-road to use so she can get back to the school faster.
"Okay, good luck and stay safe." Josie wishes Hope good luck in finding a back-road then advises that she stays safe before ending the call.
Josie walks out of the bathroom, where Lizzie is dressed in a blue and black patterned, feminine-style pant suit having crossed arms with an impatient look on her face.
"Well, how was my speech?" Lizzie looks demanding of an answer from Josie on how her speech was.
"I was taking a shower. I didn't really hear much of it." Josie motions to her wet hair to symbolize that she actually did take a shower as she confesses that she didn't hear the entire speech.
Lizzie sighs in annoyance before turning back to look at the full length mirror.
"This speech needs to be perfect." Lizzie claims that her speech needs to be perfect and Josie silently nods before noticing her sister's outfit.
"What are you wearing?" Josie wonders about her twin's attire, confused that she is wearing it.
"This is my speech making outfit. It's nice, yes?" Lizzie explains that her outfit is to help her make the speech.
"You know, I was thinking that maybe I could write the speech for you. The speech is supposed to be humble and selfless. Not offending you in any way, but your speech isn't really promotional in the fact that you're taking this seriously." Josie makes a pitch about her writing the speech and quickly explains herself when Lizzie turns to look at her.
"Okay, you can write the speech. And what about Emma?" Lizzie allows Josie to write her promotion speech then asks about Emma, which confuses Josie.
"Um, what about Emma?" Josie voices her confusion on why Lizzie's asking about Emma.
"Well, she's a witch. Do we know if she's voting along with the other witches?" Lizzie elaborates on why she's asking about Emma as she wonders if they know that Emma's voting with the witches.
"Dad said that the faculty isn't supposed to vote. Besides, Emma's most likely going to be on the honor's council to represent the younger kids." Josie reminds Lizzie that Alaric made it clear the faculty's not supposed to vote and assumes that Emma's already going to be on the honor's council.
"And? Dad never said the faculty couldn't vote, he just said they aren't supposed to but he didn't ban the idea completely. Also, Emma is still a witch who has a strong voice. She should be able to vote in order to use that voice. So, I don't see why she can't vote alongside the rest of the witches." Lizzie gives a very good reason as to why Emma should vote, which has Josie look at her very impressed.
"Now you sound like you're going to be taking this council seriously." Josie admits that Lizzie sounds like she's going to be taking the honor's council seriously causing Lizzie to stare at her blankly.
"What are you talking about?" Lizzie is confused by Josie's statement as she frowns.
"That's what this entire thing is about. The honor's council isn't just about voicing your own opinion, it's about making the right options for the fellow witches. I thought you knew that." Josie explains to Lizzie what the honor's council is truly about and Lizzie looks shocked as she sits down on the seat in front of the full length mirror.
"What am I even doing? I hate politics." Lizzie wonders aloud what she's doing then bitterly declares that she hates politics which has Josie chuckle slightly.
"That's it! I have just thought of the perfect speech." Lizzie happily exclaims that she's just thought of the perfect speech as she stands to her feet so she can look back at the mirror.
Josie picks up the clipboard from off of her bed and is looking for a pen to write Lizzie's speech down when Lizzie begins to recite her speech.
"Attention witches, as you know, I have been running for the honor's council but I have recently come to realize what this is all about. This honor's council is deserving of a representative that has fire, guts, opinions. Someone that is creative enough to think of good ideas, someone confident to voice those ideas, and someone brave to draw the line on whether to disagree with others." Lizzie starts her speech with some dramatic flair as Josie nods at all of the points she's making after she finds a pen.
"So, I have decided to step down from campaigning for this council in order to no longer force your hands in voting for me and you will all be allowed to vote in a very smart and responsible way as the headmaster had suggested. But before you leave, I would like you to know that since I am unfit for office, as I hate politics, I have decided to promote the person that you deserve to have as a representative. And since Emma is not an option, I have chosen the second best person to run. Josie." Lizzie finishes her speech, her last statement causing Josie to drop her clipboard in shock and Lizzie turns to her as she smiles.
"How was that speech?" Lizzie asks for Josie's opinion on her new speech as Josie leans down to pick up her clipboard.
"Um, is that speech just another way to promote yourself or does it actually have a meaning?" Josie decides to wonder what the speech is truly about which has Lizzie scoff and look offended by the question.
"Of course it has a meaning. You are the strong, independent, and brave representative that they need." Lizzie compliments Josie, claiming that the other witches need Josie.
"I really wouldn't say strong or independent." Josie softly mutters that she wouldn't call herself strong or independent but this has Lizzie places her hands on her sister's shoulders.
"You are for this job. So, did you write the speech down?" Lizzie assures Josie that she's strong and independent for the job then asks if she wrote the speech down.
"No, I was looking for a pen the second you started speaking and when I finally got a pen, you finished the first part of your speech." Josie shyly admits that she didn't write any of it down which has Lizzie sigh dramatically as she turns back to the mirror.
"Then I will recite it again." Lizzie announces the fact she will recite it again but before she does, Josie intercedes.
"Um, maybe you should scratch the last part of the speech. It might sound humble and selfless but the last part of it sounds like you're forcing them to vote for me." Josie suggests that Lizzie scratch the last part of her speech, giving a good reason why as she texts somebody.
"Right." Lizzie accepts the suggestion to scratch the final part of her speech but Josie chooses to intercede again.
"Uh, can the speech not have so much dramatic flair?" Josie puts out another suggestion that Lizzie not have dramatic flair yet Lizzie scoffs at this.
"Has the near fifteen years with me taught you nothing? I do everything with dramatic flair, so take it or leave it." Lizzie wonders if Josie's ever learned anything while living with her then demands to take or leave the fact that she does everything with dramatic flair.
"Okay, but at the very least, could you dial it back a bit? I'm not saying lose the flair, I'm just saying making it mild. Have mild dramatic flair, or else no one will think that you're being serious." Josie recommends that Lizzie dials it to a mild degree and Lizzie nods in agreement.
"Fine, I'll dial it back to mild. Now, from the top." Lizzie sounds reluctant when agreeing to dial the speech to mild, then states that she's starting from the top to recite her speech.
Meanwhile, Alaric is in his office, still pouring over all of the books on his desk when there's a knock on the door.
"Come in." Alaric invites the person in which has the door open and Emma entering the office.
"Hey, mind if I help with research?" Emma wonders if Alaric would mind if she helped him with research.
"Not at all. Actually, I'm glad you stopped by. I can admit that I need it, or maybe I just shouldn't have grabbed this many books." Alaric happily accepts that Emma helps him out before muttering that he shouldn't have taken so many books from the library.
Emma chuckles slightly at his muttered words before sitting on the chairs across from his desk and picking up a book in order to read it.
Nearly an hour passes, Emma and Alaric are still reading yet they're different books, when there's another knock on the door.
"Yeah, come in." Alaric invites the person knocking in again and Josie enters the office.
"Hey dad. I think we have a problem." Josie greets her dad then gets straight to the point about there possibly being a problem.
