Jonathan Creek – A long way home
Chapter 12:
Downstairs Sally and Jonathan were still chatting. He had filled her in on Maddie's past everything she had been through, from never knowing her father, to everything about her mom, as much as he knew anyway, including the suicide and then filling her in and everything to do with their adventures they had, had over the years.
"So what happened last time you saw her?"
"Well not a lot, we did have an argument…."
He said coyly, remembering the fight they had, he felt awful afterwards. It was just so frustrating, he never knew whether he was coming or going and he never knew where he stood. She acted like she wanted him one minute and then would push him away the next but when any other women would get close to him she would get jealous and cause an argument, making him feel guilty for ever looking at another women.
"So what was the argument about?"
Sally said with concern
"Charlotte Carney"
"Oh Jonathan Why? You know I cant stand her"
"Well we had to help her with a case involving her mom, or aunt as we later found out, after it all, Maddie wanted to take me home, but charlotte quickly jumped in and said she would take me home, we went out for dinner and she drove me home, I thought she might come in for a drink but then Maddie suddenly turned up and that plan fell flat and she quickly drove home…"
"Well I'm very glad she did, Like I said, I never liked her, she was too into herself and messed you around, you didn't need that again, she was definitely not the woman for my boy"
She said patting him on the leg, he meant the world to her, it was there only child, as they couldn't have anymore and she just wanted the best for him.
"But Maddie, is… Well she is an amazing woman and after everything she's been through a very strong woman, beautiful and funny, kind and caring, with such a lovely heart"
Jonathan fully agreed, he couldn't believe all the stuff she had been through and she just kept going, while he became a recluse, she grabbed life with both hands and did the best she could. She was an amazing woman and beautiful, who had a great smile that he loved, but the thing that infuriated him was…
"Yeah she is, but I never know where I stand, or whether I'm coming or going"
"Yeah well you know why that is don't you?"
"No" Jonathan said looking confused, he never understood women, he could read a book on them and still not have a clue.
"Well after everything that's happened to her she is going to find it difficult to let anyone get close to her, just like you"
She said as she grabbed his hand and gave it a squeeze, looking deep into his eyes.
"After what happened with your ex gf, you've become a recluse and not seen anyone, now its about time to stop running away and get your confidence back, I don't want to see you on your own forever"
Sally had such a serious look on her face, she meant what she said, she just wanted him finally to be with someone, be happy and settle down. He had too many years behind him of being alone, enough was enough and of course she wanted grandchildren, well of course it's what every mom wants.
"I'll try"
Not the most confident response but she thought that will do for now. Suddenly David started walking down the stairs.
"Everything okay?"
She said as she glanced up at David as he slowly walked down the stairs.
"Yeah, I think so, she might be down in a minute"
He said unsure, there was clearly something going on, but whether she would tell us or not.
