Jonathan Creek – A long way home

Chapter 13:

Maddie tried to compose herself as best as she could before she went down.

Maddie POV "I really don't want to go down there though and face him after so long, so much had happened, after our fight, and with… I have a secret and I don't know how to tell him, should I tell him?"

Sally could hear the creak on the old stairs, they all stood up as she came down and made her way over.

"Hi sweetie, you okay?"

"I'm fine, thank you, I'm sorry I…..I….."

Jonathan smiled he was pleased to see her but a bit confused, as to what was going on. Maddie quickly made a head for the door.

"I'm sorry, I've caused you guys so much hassle I better go, but Thank you ever so much"

"Your going?"

The look of sadness in Sally's face, she didn't want her to go and was going to do the best to make her stay.

"Like I said I've caused you enough hassle already" She said avoiding her glance at Jonathan.

"Hay not at all, you have been amazing, it's been so lovely having you here, you are a wonderful women and have been a fantastic help to us, helping us move in and fix the garden, we both have loved having you around.

Jonathan quickly grabbed her arm trying to stop her from going. Maybe now was the time for him to stop running away is well.

"Hay come on don't go, stay let's sort out whatever's bothering you and catch up"

Maddie quickly pulled her hand away.

"No, I have to go"

Tears started to form in her eyes, which he could see glistening in the light.

"Look is this to do with our argument over Charlotte or something?"

"I don't want to talk about it"

She turned away again trying to head for the door without being held back.

"I mean that was ages ago, and you went off to America and…."

Maddie smirked as he said it, he had no idea, she had never gone to America, she just stayed away, Barry had given her a weeks holiday in Cornwall, to relax and convalesce after what happened to her.

"What?"

Jonathan said getting annoyed.

"I never went to America and I couldn't care less about Charlotte"

She spat back, tears now rolling down her eyes.

"You didn't?"

"No, god do you think I had the money to be able to go there, and it weren't to do with Charlotte, it was to do with you"

"Me?"

Jonathan quickly spat back unsure of what he'd done

"Yes, when I came to see you I thought Charlotte would have gone home, she was only supposed to drop you off, so I came to see you to….."

"What to make sure I wasn't up to something with her….."

Jonathan said getting rattled.

"Because you could never bare to see me with anyone else, could you"

"Come on you too…."

Sally said trying to calm the situation, not that it was going to help, there was so much that had gone on between them over years, stuff they hadn't dealt with, and now it was all boiling over and came spurting out.

"It wasn't about that, I came over to talk to you and tell you something…."

"Yeah Right….." Jonathan said shouting.

The anger kept getting higher and higher in Maddie, it was soon going to explode.

"It was true okay…..

Maddie said as she went to turn away again, she had, had enough of this and it wasn't getting her anywhere. Jonathan went forward to her, she wasn't going to run away again, if she had something to say she had better say it.

"Yeah well what was it then?"

He said as he grabbed her arm and pulled her back, in anger.

"I was pregnant okay….."

She screamed shoving him back, to free his grasp. He stood there shocked and silent, he couldn't believe it.

"You, you were what….."

The tears kept streaming.

"Yeah were being the word….. I …. I had a miscarriage… I, I'm so sorry"

The tears kept coming, harder and quicker.

"Oh Maddie"

Sally said feeling sorry for this poor woman.

"Why? Why didn't you tell me?"

Jonathan said feeling angry at what had happened.

"I tried, I came over to see you that night Charlotte took you home, I tried to tell you then but all you did was shout at me, too annoyed that you didn't get your leg over"

She said shouting back.

"That's not true, all you ever did was push me away and play games, I didn't know whether I was coming or going Maddie, what was I meant to do, god your so infuriating sometimes"

Those words hit her hard, that's all she ever heard from her mom, that she was annoying and not wanted, she didn't need it from him. The pain rushed through her and she couldn't take it anymore.

"I….. I better go then, I'm sorry"

She said as she burst into tears and ran back upstairs barging past Jonathan. She went back to her bedroom, throwing her bag on the bed, the tears slightly blurring her vision. She went into the bathroom to grab a tissue, wiping her eyes making it easier to see, she looked up at the mirrored cabinet above the sink and suddenly remembered the pain killers David had used for his knee. He said they were good for taking away pain, and right now that was certainly what she needed, she had, had enough of this pain and wanted it gone forever.

She opened the cabinet, spotting the tablets right where David had left them, she quickly grabbed them and shoved them in her pocket, and rushed downstairs, where Jonathan was sitting still in shock and tears.

"Oh Maddie"

Sally said starching her arm out to comfort her.

"I'm sorry, I have to go"

"Oh come on stay, we can sort things out….

She glanced across at Jonathan.

"I think I've caused your family enough problems, I'm so, so sorry….

She said as she burst into tears again and bolted out the door.

"Maddie….." Sally shouted

David sat down next to Jonathan and put his arm around his back.

"Just give her some time, she needs some space"

Sally came back in and sat down on the coffee table in front of Jonathan.

"Well that went well"

"I know, I know I shouldn't have shouted, Its just she always pushed me away and….. I never knew she was pregnant, Oh god"

He said as he sank his head into his hands, tears started rolling down his cheeks. Sally raised her hand to stroke his hair, trying to comfort her son as best as she could.

"I'm just going to get some more of my painkillers, my knees still playing me up"

"Ok dear"

David headed back upstairs as Sally joined Jonathan on the sofa to comfort him some more.
