Of Shield Spells and Saving Little Sisters

It was a quiet day in the home of Shining Armor. Currently, the little colt was in the living room of his home, sitting the coffee table with a book open in front of him, and he was focusing on it intently. In the background, Shining Armor's baby sister, Twilight, was stumbling around, she was attempting to walk while also carrying her favourite stuffed toy, Smarty Pants.

Shining Armor was focusing hard on his spell book, he carefully reread the instructions for what felt like the millionth time. Shining Armor took a deep breath. "Ok, this time, it'll work." Shining Armor muttered to himself with determination. He lit up his horn, and pointed it directly at his book. "Come on..." Shining muttered. Shining Armor's whole face lit up as he saw a pink bubble about the size of a marble slowly starting to expand at the tip of his horn. "Yes! This is It!" Shining Armor cried excitedly. "Now I just have to make it bigger." Shining watched as the pink bubble at the end of his horn slowly expanded, it got to be about the size of a golf ball, before it suddenly popped. Shining Armor's face fell. "What?! Oh, come on, I had that!" Shining Armor protested, he stamped his hoof in frustration. "Shiny? What's going on?" Twilight Velvet asked as she came into the room, she looked down at her son with a frown. "My shield spell isn't working." Shining Armor complained. "These things take time, Shiny. I'm sure you'll get it eventually." Twilight Velvet said, as she put a hoof on Shining's shoulder in comfort. "But when will I get it? I've been working on this for ages and the best I can do is make a little bubble appear at the tip of my horn." Shining Armor said with a pout. "Well, that's progress, that's better nothing, don't you think?" Shining Armor paused as he thought about his mother had said. "I... Guess." Shining Armor said half-heartedly. Twilight Velvet ruffled Shining Armor's mane. "I've got an idea, why don't you take a break from practicing, and have cookies and milk?" She suggested. Shining Armor thought for a moment. Some chocolate chip cookies did sound good. "Ok." Shining Armor said with a small smile. Twilight Velvet smiled and stood up. "Alright, I'll go get them." She said, and with that, she left the room.

Shining Armor looked at his open spell book. "I guess I should put this away..." Shining Armor said hesitantly. "...Or maybe I could try the spell one last time..." Shining Armor decided. While Shining Armor was going over the spell again, Twilight was walking clumsily with her stuffed toy in her hoof. The little filly hadn't quite learned how to walk properly yet, and having three hooves to stand on rather than four wasn't making it any easier. She was also getting dangerously close to the book shelf in the corner of the living room. Now, here's the thing about this book shelf, it had tons of books in it, and a lot of them placed quite precariously on top of each other. Twilight took another fall, and she against the book shelf, the little vibrations she caused were enough to make one of books sitting on top of the other books slide out, not enough for it to fall, but about a third of the book had slide out. Twilight pulled her up, and gave an annoyed look at the piece of furniture in front of her, but then she suddenly gave a smile as she realized the shelf that just reached her head would be perfect for her to balance herself, and cuddle Smarty Pants at the same time! Twilight stuck her front left hoof in front her and reached towards the shelf, once she had placed her hoof on the shelf, she slowly pushed herself up. The filly didn't notice that her added weight, and the pressure she was putting on the shelf was causing the book to slide out even more, until it was about halfway out of the shelf. It didn't get a chance to slide anymore, because Twilight had just realized that she was a lot wobblier on only two legs, so she fell back on her rump. But Twilight was determined to make her idea work, so she stood up once more, and this time, the pressure she was putting on the shelf was enough that the book slid out even more, it was about three quarters out, and the book being rather thick and heavy, it was enough that the book started to fall, right towards an oblivious Twilight.

Shining Armor was back to focusing on his spell book, but suddenly, he saw something out of the corner of his eye: A book falling. He looked up, and looked over and his eyes widened in horror. A book was falling right towards his baby sister! "Twily!" Shining Armor shouted, as he took off toward her, with his horn lighting up on instinct. At that moment, all Shining Armor was thinking about was Twilight, he didn't notice his horn lighting up, or the pink bubble that came out his horn, all he saw was that Twilight was about to get hurt, or at least, he thought she was going to get hurt. Until a pink bubble was suddenly surrounding Twilight. Shining Armor watched as the book bounced harmlessly off the shield, and Twilight, seemingly oblivious to everything that just happened, including the fact that she was in a pink bubble, just sat there, stuffing Smarty Pants into her mouth.

"What the-" Shining Armor whipped around to find both his parents standing at the entrance to the living room, their jaws dropped in shock. Shining Armor made his way over to them. "Nice shield spell, which one of you did that?" He asked. "We... Neither of us did that, Shiny." Twilight Velvet said, as she got her voice back. "Wh- What? Then who did the shield spell?" Shining Armor asked, the confusion clear in his voice. "Shiny, you did." Night Light said, as a proud smile spread across his face. "What? No, there's no way. I- I can't-" Shining stuttered as he grasped for an excuse. There was no way that could have been him... Right? Shining Armor looked up his parents, who were both beaming with pride at this point, and then looked back over at Twilight, who was still in the shield bubble, then he looked back at his parents. "I... I did that?" Shining Armor asked, his voice filled with awe and disbelief. His parents both nodded vigorously. "We both saw you do it." Twilight Velvet said. Shining Armor looked back at Twilight. "I can't believe it, I did it. I actually did it!" Shining Armor cried, he leaped into the air with joy. "And that's not all you did, Shiny." Night Light said with a grin. Shing Armor stopped jumping. "What do you mean? I guess I did also save Twilight." "No, well yes, you did do that, but your father's right. That's not all you did." Twilight Velvet said. Shining Armor blinked in confusion. "Shiny, look at your flank." Night Light said. "My... My flank?" Shining Armor asked, he gave both his parents a look of confusion, but did as he was told. He turned his head, and to Shining Armor's surprise, his flank was no longer blank. Upon his flank was a dark blue shield with a pink star in the middle, and three blue stars floating above the shield. Shining Armor's jaw dropped in shock. "I- I got my..." "You got your cutie mark!" His parents chorused. "I got my cutie mark!" Shining Armor exclaimed. "I did a shield spell, saved Twilight, and got my cutie mark all in the same day!" Shining Armor cheered. "Oh, Shiny! I'm so proud of you!" Twilight Velvet said, as she hugged Shining Armor. Night Light grinned, he was about to get in on the hug, when he remembered something, he looked over at Twilight, who was still in the shield bubble, and was still completely unaware of it. Night Light went over to Twilight, and tapped the shield bubble. "Er, Shining?" Night Light said out loud. Shining Armor looked over at his father. "Yeah, dad?" "Do you know how to deactivate your shield spell?"
