Put Those Flowers Back Where You Got Them, Or So Help Me!
Asriel Dreemurr laid on the living room sofa, pouting and clearly not in the best of moods. This was understandable, as not too long ago, his adopted human sister Chara had suggested something to him that left him quite shaken. She had brought the idea of poisoning herself with buttercups so he could absorb her SOUL, cross through the barrier, and gather six more human SOULS so he could shatter the barrier once and for all.
The very idea of his own sister, his best friend who he loved more than anything, killing herself was worse than his worst nightmare. So, naturally, Asriel refused to go along with this plan. Chara, in turn, listed a bunch of "reasons" why it would be worth it, from her just being one person against hundreds of thousands of Monsters, to the fact that the despair of not being able to see the surface was killing Monsters right this moment, and even the idea that a human like her didn't fit in or belong with the Dreemurr family. Ariel vehemently disagreed with these arguments, and in the end, the young Monster ended up fleeing the room in tears, shouted that he would never ever ever take her SOUL.
Asriel wasn't sure how long it had been since the fight. Had it been a fight? If so, it was the very first serious fight he had ever had with his sister. Sure, Chara could be intense and pushy at times, and called him a crybaby quite a bit, but at times she would have just enough compassion to relent, so things had never gotten as bad as they were now. Anyway, the stress of it all resulted in Asriel throwing himself onto the sofa and crying himself to sleep. With his head slightly clearer, and most of his messy emotions cried out of him, Asriel resolved to really talk things over with Chara and get her to drop the terrible idea once and for all.
Asriel slid off of the couch and made his way back to his and Chara's room, mentally preparing himself to speak with her again. After he pushed open the door, Asriel was greeted with a sight that terrified him. Chara was sitting on her bed, holding a large bouquet of buttercups.
"NO!" Asriel screamed as he ran towards Chara with his arms outstretched.
Chara didn't hear Asriel open the door, and she quickly turned and cried out "Hey" when she saw him running towards him. She held the flowers out of reach as Asriel plowed into her.
"I told you that we weren't gonna do it!" Asriel shouted as he frantically tried to take the buttercups from his sister.
"Azzy, knock it off!" Chara said irately, "We both know that the Monsters need this."
"No they don't!"
Chara shoved Asriel off of her and dropped the bouquet onto her bed. "Asriel, listen to me," she said seriously, "I didn't have a life before I fell into the Underground. I was a nobody. My life didn't matter. But if I can do this. . .If I can set the Monsters free and make all those rotten humans pay, then my life finally will mean something."
"That doesn't make any sense," Asriel said, confusion evident on his face, "You'd be dead. Your life would be over."
Chara groaned and rolled her eyes, "No, you're not getting it, Azzy. I will have done something important with my life. It will have meant something. It'll all be worth-."
"Stop saying that, because it wouldn't," Asriel said with a frown, "It would be worth it, Chara. You're wrong."
Chara clenched her teeth and ground them together a bit. Then she shouted, "BUT I'D BE OUT OF YOUR HAIR!"
Asriel leaned back a bit, surprised by Chara's sudden outburst, and he said, "What's that supposed to mean?"
Chara lowered her head and clenched her fists as she let out a loud, bitter laugh. "Don't you get it! I'm sure lots of Monsters resent me for what I am, and I'm sure they resent your parents for harboring a Human, and I made Dad a poison pie-."
"We BOTH put buttercups in that pie! So by that logic, I should die too," Asriel countered.
"But your death wouldn't make anything better. Mine would," Chara said, still with her head lowered.
"Not it wouldn't! Even if Mom and Dad and I were free, we would never be able to enjoy it because you'd be dead and gone! We'd be sad forever!"
"Not forever. You'd all get over it. And besides-."
"NO, CHARA!"
Chara brought her head back up and saw that Asriel was standing tall and firm, and with not a single tear in his eyes.
"I don't care what you say. You're not gonna convince me to agree to this stupid plan. You're wrong!" Asriel said with absolute certainty.
Chara stared at her adoptive brother in amazement. She had pegged him as a timid crybaby for so long, yet here he was strongly disagreeing with her and standing his ground resolutely. There was a small part of her that couldn't help but feel proud of him.
"But, the Barrier. . .We-," Chara began, but she was interrupted again.
"I said no! I'm not gonna let you do this," Asriel said, then he leaned close to Chara and poked her in the stomach as he shouted, "NOW PUT THOSE FLOWERS BACK WHERE YOU GOT THEM, OR SO HELP ME-!"
Chara suddenly gasped, her eyes wide with horror as she looked at something behind her brother. Asriel noticed the changed in her demeanor, and he turned around to see those source of Chara's horror. Toriel and Asgore were standing right outside the open door, and they were staring at their children with a mixture of concern and confusion.
Chara shut her eyes as her mind went into a downward spiral.
"This is it. Not only will I never be able to free the Monsters, but now they're gonna lock me up so I can't hurt myself and tell everyone I'm crazy and treat me like I'm crazy and-."
"Awww, you spoiled the surprise!"
Chara opened her eyes and looked at Asriel, who stood with his arms folded behind his back and a bashful smile on hi face.
"Surprise?" Toriel echoed in confusion.
Asriel nodded and said, "Yup. Me and Chara a writing a play together, and we were rehearsing some of it just now."
Asgore chuckled warmly and said, "Oh-ho-ho! A play, you say? How very interesting."
Asriel smiled wider and said, "Uh-huh! It's called, uh, Put Those Flowers Back Where You Got Them, Or So Help Me. It's a musical!"
Toriel smiled as well and said, "Oh, really? A musical, is it?"
"Yeah, yeah. And I, uh, I sing the first song!" Asriel said with nervousness disguised as eagerness, "The curtain rises, then I come out, and I'm like, uh. . ."
Asriel ran in place and sang out quickly, "Put those flowers back where you got them, or so help meeeeeeeee!"
Asriel then twirled around and shuffled off to his right, "Take those things away before I cryyyyyyyyyyy!"
He then moved to his left, kicking his legs high as he moved, "Put those flowers back where you got them!"
Then he did some jazz hands as he did a quick jig, "Or I'll stick my face in a piiiiiiiiiiie!"
Asriel posed while holding his arms wide, smiling the biggest smile he could.
Toriel had a delighted look on her face as she said, "Aww, that was adorable!"
Asgore chuckled to himself in amusement as he shook his head and said, "Well, well, aren't you a spirited one, Asriel."
Asriel chuckled nervously and said, "Well, it's kind of a work in progress. We're not finished with it let, so it's gonna get better."
Chara, meanwhile, was simply staring at Asriel in disbelief. The young monster had essentially humiliated himself in front of his parents, and in front of her for that matter, with that ridiculous song and dance, all just to cover for her. As she thought of this, something began welling up within the human girl. She couldn't tell whether it was shame, guilt, pride, or love; but whatever it was she needed to let it out somehow. So, throwing caution to the winds, Chara got up off of the bed and said with a nervous grin, "Well, that's just the opening song. I got a song of my own later on, and I think it's better."
Asriel turned to look at Chara, surprised at the role she had decided to play in his little farce. Chara just winked at him, then closed her eyes and started to sing herself, albeit a bit more slowly and softly than he had.
"I'd be out of your haaaiiiiiiir. . ." Chara sang as she held her left hand up and out dramatically, "And just. . .when I daaaaare to care."
Chara's already normally rosy cheeks got even redder as she lowered her left hand and grabbed Asriel's right hand, "You say. . . oh contraire, you're my pair, a friend. . ."
Chara then pulled Asriel in close and hugged him as she finished, ". . .I love you. . ."
Asriel had a look of utter joy on his face after hearing this, and he eagerly hugged Chara back.
Toriel sniffled and wiped her eye. "That. . .was sweet," she said with a warm, adoring smile.
Asgore had a broad smile himself, and he said, "Well, I'm certainly sold. Go on and pursue your dreams of musical theater. Your mother and I are certainly eager to see the results! Now, let's leave you two to it."
The loving parents left the room, closing the door behind them, leaving Asriel and Chara alone in relative privacy.
". . .Well?" Asriel said to his sister.
Chara was very much aware that they were still hugging as she said with a twinkle in her ruby red eye, "I suppose I'd better stick around for a little while longer. After all, we have a musical to write!"
Let me know if you want me to write a second chapter with the kids performing the complete musical.
