Alice did her best to keep up with Tily as she skipped energetically through the forest, over large fallen trees, through tall plants, and down steep slopes.
"This place is beautiful," Alice said as the two slowed down for a bit. Despite their speed, she had been able to soak in all the majestic wonder this forest had shown her. It was incredible just how massive and colorful it was. "You're really lucky to live in a forest like this!"
Tily chuckled. "Thanks," she said. "Needless to say, I rarely get bored over here. Sometimes I get a good workout just looking for a place to nap!"
A thought crossed Alice's mind. "Say...if you don't mind me asking," she began. "You got a family out here?"
"Well..." Tily replied, thinking for a moment. "Us fairies don't really have families, per say...rather, it's kinda like we're all one big family. I've got plenty of fairy pals I know across the land. We play togther, socialize, have group meditations...it's pretty cool. Then there's Ly, who sorta acts like a guardian over us."
"Kinda like a mommy?" Alice asked.
"I guess you could say that." Tily went on. "We're a pretty independent race, so we don't need to be under her care all the time. Though she's always there to help when we need it. She's spoken to me a few times about how I need to be less impulsive, and how that will help keep my powers under control." All of a sudden, the little fairy perked up and ran forward. "Ooh, check it out! Over here! You're gonna love this."
"Time to give our feet a little rest," said Tily, grinning at Alice. The patch of land they were standing on began to shake. Unprepared for this, Alice fell down onto her bottom. Tily stifled a giggle. "Here we go!" she said. Suddenly, the edge of the cliff seperated from the ground entirely, and began moving through the air! Alice looked down over the edge and saw a gigantic root growing into the chunk of land, carrying it. "I can tell by your reaction that this isn't something you normally see in your world," Tily said, smiling. "Out here in our woods, public transportation's a bit different."
"Wow...that big root has a mind of its own?" asked Alice as she continued to stare at it.
"I think so," Tily replied, sitting down next to Alice on the edge of the platform. "There's a lot of these moving branches deep in this forest. It's fun to mess with them and see how they react. I think this one's gotten to know me. Oh, we're here!"
The chunk of earth lowered down on the edge of another cliff, and Alice and Tily got off it. As soon as they did, the branch lifted the chunk away, presumably back towards its original location. Tily pointed forward. "That mountain's closer than ever now! Follow me!"
As the trees around them grew further apart, Alice could see the side of a very large mountain ahead. "Is that the mountain you told me about?" she asked.
"Bingo!" Tily replied. "Race you there?"
Alice chuckled. "Sure!"
The two kids took off, laughing as they ran towards the edge of the forest. After all the amazing sights she had seen with Tily at her side, Alice had felt less and less lonely. Now, as the pair raced playfully down the dirt path, she felt as though she had known the young fairy much longer than she actually had, like she was a true lifelong friend of hers. As long as she was with someone like Tily, being trapped in another dimension didn't feel quite so bad.
As they got closer to the mountainside, Alice stopped as she heard something in the distance. "Hold on a second," she told Tily, who screeched to a halt. "You hear something?"
The two stopped and listened. Bah bah bah...bah bah bah...In an instant, they both knew what that sound was. Tily gave an annoyed look. "We got Rabbids nearby," she confirmed. "Better keep moving."
Alice, however, began to walk in the direction of the sound. "Maybe it's the one who dropped this." She took the watch out of her pocket, which was luckily still completely intact. "I still gotta return it..."
"Alice, wait! Those creeps are the reason you got into this whole mess! Maybe we should just leave them alone..."
"But I came all this way to give it back to him," Alice replied. "And it wasn't his fault I went down the hole. Trust me, this'll be real quick."
Tily looked at the ground for a moment before speaking up again. "Fine," she said. "Just be careful, you don't wanna get sucked into yet another dimension."
Alice smiled. "Thank you!" she said. "I'll just be a second." She took off. Tily nervously followed her.
Several Rabbids in colorful costumes were standing in a group, angrily facing the one in the waistcoat. The waistcoat Rabbid waved his arms about, trying to defend himself. "Bah bah! Bah bah!" he spoke as he gestured about. Then, a Rabbid dressed as a queen, wearing a crown and a large, black-and-red dress, stepped forward.
"Buh..." the Queen Rabbid began, making a throat-slit gesture. "BAH BUH-BUH BAH!" The waistcoat Rabbid fell to his knees, pleading in despair. Two other Rabbids, curiously wearing costumes resembling playing cards, stepped forward, holding spears.
"Hey! You guys, wait!" All the Rabbids stopped what they were doing and looked up to see Alice running their way, holding up the watch. "I think one of you dropped this!" The waistcoat Rabbid immediately ran over to her, looking at the watch. "It is yours, isn't it?" asked Alice, handing him it. "You dropped it in the park, and I came all this way to bring it back to you." The Rabbid looked at the watch as a huge, open-mouthed smile crept across his face. He held it up to the group, jumping up and down excitedly.
"Bwah bwah bwah!" exclaimed the Rabbid. All the other Rabbids began cheering wildly. The waistcoat Rabbid turned back to Alice, his eyes now watery. He then gave her a big hug. "Bwah bwah bwah! Baaaah!" he exclaimed, thanking her. Alice smiled back, patting his head.
"You needed that watch more than I thought, huh?" she said. "You're welcome, little guy." The Rabbid ran back to the group as they all continued to cheer. Alice turned to Tily, who was watching the whole thing from behind a rock, in near disbelief. "All done! We can go now," Alice said, as if what just happened was the most normal thing in the world.
"Wow..." Tily softly spoke up. "I...didn't realize that those guys could actually be so...well...friendly."
"Guess it depends on how well you get to know them," Alice replied, shrugging.
"Yeah, I guess so..." said Tily. "Well, anyways...we got us a mountain to climb!"
"Bring it on!" Alice said eagerly. And with that, the two headed for the entrance to the mountain.
