Welcome to Family, a Young Justice Fanfic. It is set right after Artemis joined the team. Before he had a cordial relationship with the man of steel. This fanfic will deal with jealously and abuse. Reader discretion is advised.
Cadmus is a place that never thought I would ever return to. They created me here. I should be grateful. But I was only created for selfish purposes. They wanted me to replace Superman. Like they did with all of the clones. I would be their puppet. Unlike the real man of steel. Underneath their thumb at all times. A true slave. Fortunately for me, I was rescued by my new 'family.' Robin, Aqualad, and Kid Flash. Now, I was back here with them. Along with Miss Martian and Artemis. This time though I was on a mission. To investigate rumors that they started up their cloning facilities again. And if we found evidence of illicit activity then we were to destroy the facility. Something that I hoped was true. For nothing would bring me greater pleasure than bringing the house down!
Unfortunately, most of the mission was boring. Everything was above board. It seemed that they had dismantled their underground cloning facilities. There was no elevator going straight to the center of the Earth. It was just a boring research facility with nothing of interest to report. All the scientists were working on legitimate advances for society. It seemed that Cadmus had turned a new leaf. Just as they said they had.
Hell, they even welcomed us in to inspect the place. The scientists seemed annoyingly curious about me. They asked me questions about what I could do. Or how I was adapting to life on my own. They wanted perspective on every day and boring topics. Such as eating, showering, and socializing. I didn't want to answer any of these questions. It was none of their business. My life was my own now. I did not have to answer their dumb questions. It's not that they really cared about me. I was only a scientific curiosity to them. Nothing more. They did not care about me as a person. If they did then they would have never created me in the first place. They would have left Superman alone. Instead, they broke the laws of man and nature to create me. Then they tried to turn me into a slave. I will not forget that anytime soon.
I hated this place. It stank. It was also annoyingly difficult to X-ray. It was like something was blocking me. Which kept me on edge. Why would they go to such lengths to keep me out? Surely, a normal research facility would have nothing to hide. Neither Superman nor I would bother it. There would be no need to line the building with lead. Yet, that was exactly what they had done. Even the inside was lined with the stuff. What was the purpose of that? Somehow I doubted that I would get a straight answer from them.
Instead, I relied on Miss Martian to get the answers. She went through scientist after scientist. Looking for answers. However, none of the minds showed anything other than what they claimed was true. It seemed that they did not even know that the building was lined with lead. They were truly useless and annoying.
That was when I noticed something off. It was a small detail that the others missed. There was a door that was not there before. The genomorphs were quite thorough in their teaching. I knew this facility like the back of my hand. Let this door was not there before. I asked the scientists about it, but they knew nothing. Told me that it had always been there. That it led to a disused storage closet. And if you judged it by how dirty and bandaged it looked - you may believe them. There was only one problem though - the rest of the facility didn't look like this. It was annoying bright and well maintained. Like a hospital or something, Why would they have such a place inside the perfect facility? It didn't add up.
They tried to get us to move on. They came up with excuse after excuse as to why it should be left alone. None of us bought it. So, I applied some elbow grease and opened the door. Which by the way was magnetically sealed. Storage closet indeed. How stupid did they think we were? Even the mops and brooms didn't fool me. I just punched through the back wall (which was also a door) and went through. My teammates followed me soon after.
This is when the mission got interesting. There was a hallway that led to a zetta beam of some kind. It reminded me of the tubes that the League used. Of course, it refused to grant us access. Not that this stopped Robin. He just hacked right in as if it was child's play. In seconds, he had it operational and responding to his command.
"It only goes to one point. A facility some two thousand miles away in Panama. Not sure exactly where it is. If we go through this we could be stranded." Robin told us.
I stepped into the machine. "I don't care. We came here to prove that Cadmus is up to something. Now that we found this we can't go home. We have to find out what they are hiding."
"Easy for you to say. You can just run home. Some of us can't run faster than a speeding bullet." Artemis pointed out sarcastically.
I growled. "I know that!"
"Everyone calm down," Aqualad ordered. "Superboy is aware that most of us are not as fast as Superman. He knows the risk for us and he is not suggesting this course of action lightly. Am I correct, Superboy?"
"Yes." I said.
"Good. Because I agree with Superboy. We came here for proof of Cadmus' duplicity. We are not going to leave here without it. We need to go. Consequences be dammed."
Artemis finally relented. "Fine. Whatever. Let's just go."
The rest of the team joined me on the platform and we teleported to Panama.
The facility was just like the facility in which I was created. Glowing orbs were everywhere. With enslaved genomorphs everywhere. We ended up breaking up to search the facility faster. The goal was to avoid conflict as much as possible. So this wasn't my strong suit. But I tried to meet the mission's objectives.
That all stopped when I found a young clone on her own. She was trapped inside a locked room - lined with lead. There was a pad next to the door that red in Spanish 'Sujeto híbrido kryptoniano humano: Nombre Martha Kent.' Under it was a warning: 'Advertencia: la remoción no autorizada del sujeto se castiga con la muerte.'
"Punish this!" I growled as I ripped open the door.
The girl shrunk beach for a second then relaxed. She said in broken and poor Spanish "Oler . . . con . . . Papa."
"Hmm . . . Maybe you should try English. You do speak that, correct?"
She looked down. "Sorry, I'm trying but the words are soo hard!"
I raised my eyebrow. "They've been teaching you Spanish?"
She shook her head. "No, just listening. They don't like talking to me. They say nasty things when they don't think I'm listening."
"How do you know that?"
"Don't know. Just do. Everyone's scared of me."
I tried to force a smile. "Well, I'm not. I'm Conner, you are?"
"Martha." She said.
Technically the sign had already told me her name. But as I had learned recently that humans liked introducing themselves. It put them at ease. And right now I needed that if I was to get her out. No way in hell was I leaving this poor defenseless child here to rot. Sure, she was probably another like myself but that didn't matter. She needed my help. Nothing was going to stop me from saving her. God knows what they would do with her here.
I got down low and opened my arms. "Hop on, Martha. I'm getting you out of here."
Martha did not hesitate. She jumped up into my arms and held on for dear life. She was stronger than I expected, but I could easily handle it. A human might her grip unnerving. Still, she wasn't nearly as strong as Superman or myself. I wondered why they created such a clone. She was only five or six years old. She would not pass for Kal-El at all. Yes, she reassembled him but there were noticeable differences. Like her eyes for example. They were violet, not sky blue. And her hair had a completely different texture. I realized that they must have been trying to create a clone of Supergirl. They were not done with her design and growth. Why else would she be so young?
I reached out to the others and told them what I found. I asked to evacuate the building. They agreed and I raced towards the rendezvous point. I managed to dodge ninety percent of the guards. However, the remaining ten percent proved challenging with a 'baby on board.' Martha limited my movement. I had to carefully make sure that no blow hit her. Which cramped my style. I had to think before I moved. Just like Black Canary taught me. That way the girl remained unharmed.
Finally, I met up with the others. Somehow they had not properly secured the teleporter. I wanted to put the girl down so I could clear out the goons. However, I ran into an issue: She wouldn't let me go. She kept on hanging on to me for dear life. I was stuck.
Miss Martian noticed the girl's reluctance to let go. "She's scared, Conner. You're the only thing here that she trusts. She doesn't want to let go."
"Well, it's kind of hard to fight with her clinging to me like this."
Aqualad chimed in. "Then hang back. Guard her. We'll do the fighting."
I grumbled but ended up doing as he told me to do. He was right. I couldn't fight well like this. And I needed to be able to clear a path. That was not going to happen with this annoying little monkey attaching herself to me. I had to allow them to do the clearing. I was not having a good night. My team cleared the area within three minutes. Allowing me to waltz up to the portal. Robin hacked the gate again and we returned to Cadmus Labs in America. From there it was a simple matter to escape the building. They had few guards since they were trying so hard to look legitimate. They could stop us. We escaped with the girl.
That's it for this chapter. Thanks for reading!
