Glynda Goodwitch was finally starting to calm down. It had been a long day, but it was finally starting to come to a close. Her daughter only had a few more pins left to hand out and the first of the successful partners were starting to reach the edge of the cliff, waiting for the signal that the Initiation was at an end.
In just a few more hours, she would have her daughter back in her arms. A daughter who most likely had a few cuts and bruises, since Glynda doubted Ruby remembered to keep her aura up the entire time. She looked over her scroll one more time, tracking as Ruby was swinging around another girl's ribbon weapon, accidentally swung the cleaver end int a tree, startling the young girl. Sighing, she flipped to a different view at random, watching as a few partners were locked in scuffles with a pair of graduated huntsmen.
Flipping once more, she caught the trail-end of a fight between a lone student-hopeful and Peter Port, watching as he shattered the poor boy's aura. With a belly-bouncing laugh, he smiled under his thick moustache and gave her camera a thumbs up. Glynda rolled her eyes. She doubted he actually knew that she was watching his feed. More so, she was certain that he had done the same thing each and every time, hoping either herself or the headmaster would see it.
"Headmaster, do you know how many more pins Ruby has left to hand out?"
The headmaster looked up from his own scroll for a moment before responding. "About seven left. That should bring the pair count to seventy-five."
"Seventy-five? That doesn't seem correct." There were only supposed to be classes of one hundred after all. Unless…
"What aren't you telling me Ozpin?" The deputy headmistress glared at her superior in a way that only a mother could.
"I have no idea as to what you are referring to. Oh, look at that. Dear Little Ruby has been caught once more."
"Is she alright?" Glynda asked, glancing at her scroll before cursing herself at being so easily distracted. She watched momentarily concerned as a black-haired faunus girl with a bow snatch back her weapon from Ruby, while her partner, a Schnee by the look of her, was giving her daughter a lecture. "What is going on Ozpin."
"You must always have extras," the headmaster said, refusing to look at her. "Just in case any of the pairs are caught or captured by the Grimm stand-ins."
"In my many, many years of teaching, we have not once ever placed more objects than there were available student spots. I would know, all Initiations and their management was my job."
"Well Glynda, things change." Ozpin nervously drank from his mug of coffee.
As Glynda was about to comment, Ozpin's scroll buzzed. "Well, look at that. It seems like I have an important message to handle. Please Glynda, return to viewing your daughter and the Initiates."
Instead of listening to the headmaster's obvious and untactful change of subject, she tried to listen in to his call. Unfortunately, she could not quite hear what was going on, on the other end.
"I see," Ozpin said. "Can you hold them back for a short while longer?"
A pause.
"I do not believe I can have any others back you up."
Another pause. Then a sigh.
"If you are sure, then I will contact her. Her mission will be over slightly sooner than expected."
Ozpin hung up his scroll, returning to viewing Ruby on its monitor. As if only then noticing Glynda glaring at him, he looked up with a very false smile. "Yes?"
Glynda scowled.
"Well, I have a few important duties to attend to. I shall be back in a few moments." Ozpin then left her alone on top of the cliff.
Leaning over the edge, all she could see were densely packed trees, but knew that there were dozens of students below. Yes, she felt confident calling them students at this point. They all had achieved their objectives for this Initiation. Whatever the headmaster had planned, it had to have been something planned very last minute.
What could he have planned out? She could only wonder. There was something truly not right if the headmaster had planned… well, anything. It was very much not in his style to work on Initiation, as he had long since lost any care for those who would fail to attend his school. He placed a great deal of care and consideration into those who would attend Initiation, as well as those who were his students to be sure, but failed huntsmen were no longer his concern. It was an attitude she had once shared. At least until Ruby.
She received a message on her scroll from Ruby.
Ruby: Hi mommy! I'm heading back to school now. I'm going to spend some time with my cousins until Initiation is over!
With a smile, she sent back a quick message, I love you, darling. Let me know when you make it to Beacon.
As she clicked the confirmation and the message was sent from her scroll, she pursed her lips. Ruby should still have a few pins left to give out. Something was most definitely not right.
Headmaster Ozpin returned to the cliff with a smile.
A moment later, there was a loud howl. Glynda immediately froze.
"What was that?"
The singular howl was then accompanied by at least a few dozen others. Those were Beowolf calls. Then there were growls from what were most definitely Creeps.
"Why are there Grimm? I thought that you…" She spun to face Ozpin, a murderous glare painted on her face. "What did you do?"
"To be fair, Glynda," Ozpin tried to say as Glynda stepped up to him, causing him to step away from the angry expert huntress. "This was Ruby's idea."
She felt her scroll light up as the Grimm proximity sensors around the cliff buzzed with alertness. Then from Ozpin's scroll, she heard the shouts and screams of student-hopefuls.
"Grimm!"
"There's so many of them!"
"I thought Initiation was over!"
"Help! They're everywhere!"
Glynda sighed and shook her head, listening to the chaos that was happening below her. The ground rumbled with the sound of an explosion.
Ruby: I'm back!
At least Ozpin had the decency to ensure Ruby's safety.
Glynda: You are going to be in so much trouble when I get back there.
Ruby: I love you?
So, I had an idea for another Glynda chapter that would also be a fun way to end Initiation. I may still do one more chapter from one of the girl's perspectives, but that is still TBD. That dastardly and devious Ruby Goodwitch! And her darn Grandpa for letting her go ahead with those crazy ideas.
Darknight2124 - Of course Ruby would manage to get herself completely trapped. Guess her mommy is going to need to train her a little more on basic surrounding awareness. And obviously Ruby is going to play with the weapon. It's a weapon! (And Ruby!)
Psiah - ;)
Zapper Frost - I think I mentioned a while back that that was another person's spear.
Therecklessone - Yes, Sisterhood was a pretty nice fluff story. I remember enjoying it too. And now I want to have a flashback chapter of Glynda struggling to change a diaper and needing to go to Ozpin for assistance.
merendinoemeliano - Thanks!
Logbook - Thanks. It's nice to write adorable content every once in a while.
Kivuntappaja - Well, Blake and Weiss should have kept a better hold on the dolt! Hmm... it could be interesting to have Roman show up.
Robbie2413 - Thanks! I don't think I've seen many (or any!) other mama Goodwitch fics, so it was something I've wanted to try my hand at for a while.
