This is a longer chapter. I know I've missed some edits, but I'm really interested how you like it. Please review.
Sometime in the night he had rolled on his back and I had curled up to his side with my head on his chest. That's where I was when I woke to a sound near the windows. Looking up, I see a shadow outlined by what little moonlight came through the window. I slowly slid my hand under a pillow and found Four's gun. I pulled it out and sat up pointing it at the shadow. "Who are you and what do you want?"
Tobias startled awake at my voice and then looked over at who I was pointing the gun at. They raised their hands and I could see it was a woman. Tobias sighed and fell back, "For God's sake, Mother, you don't just sneak into my freaking apartment like that. You could have been shot." He put his hand on my outstretched arms and lowered them. He didn't take the gun out of my hands, however.
Now that the woman moved out of the shadows a bit more I could see her face. It was literally like seeing a ghost. I had only met Evelyn a couple times when I was a child but this was crazy. Evelyn looked over me and it was then that I realized the sheet had fallen to my waist and I was completely naked on top. I handed Four his gun and pulled the sheet up while looking for my night gown on the floor next to the bed. This was not how anyone wanted to meet their boyfriend's mother.
Tobias cleared his throat, "Mother, this is Tris. Tris, this is my mother."
I was at least somewhat covered at this point and nodded to her, "What are you doing here, Evelyn?"
She looked at me with a raised eyebrow, and then looked at him, "How does she know me, Tobias?"
I looked at him, "You didn't tell her?"
He shook his head at me, "Not everything, no. I didn't think I had the right. That's your story not mine."
I looked back at her with a sigh. Hard to argue with that. "My real name is Beatrice Prior, and I'm Andrew and Natalie's daughter. I transferred to Dauntless. I go by Tris now. My brother, Caleb, transferred to Erudite." I kept it to what she absolutely needed to know.
She looked shocked, "Oh, well, that certainly complicates things."
"Now, what are you doing here?" I asked her again.
"I needed to speak to Tobias about what we've learned today. But he didn't come tonight so I came to him," she said imperiously.
"He's exhausted and needs to sleep. He's doing double duties here and out with you all night every night and the Dauntless are getting suspicious. If he goes in to work tomorrow and falls asleep he's going to be in serious trouble and that won't help any of us," I said getting out of his bed and staring her down. "So I suggest you make this quick and leave."
She looked shocked, "Excuse me, young lady, but who do you think you are? I'm his mother."
I took two steps to her and said, "You're the woman who left him with an abusive father. Don't talk about what you are to him like you've earned it. You lost that right the day you died."
She stepped back and looked at Tobias, "Well, she's a feisty one. No wonder she left Abnegation."
Tobias had, somehow, at least put on underwear and stood up, "Tris, stand down." It was a command but said with kindness.
I glanced at him and stepped back, "I'm getting changed." And I went to the bathroom.
When I came back out they were sitting at his counter and it looked like they were finishing up their discussion. "So what's going on?"
Tobias looked at me, "The Erudite had planned the attack on Abnegation for right after initiation ended. But the mind control serums weren't ready yet. Now that we know what it is the Factionless have been able to hack in to their servers and screw the coding all up. They don't even know what's wrong to fix it. And they don't know why it's wrong. It's buying us some time. From the plans we have gathered there is actually something specific they're looking for in Abnegation but we haven't figured it out yet."
More pieces of the puzzle were being put together, "That's why they want the teams. And why you and I are on team B. We know Abnegation better than anyone. The teams ARE the plan B. They are going to find a way to create a disturbance and use us to take over Abnegation. Jeanine thinks we know where whatever they are looking for is, and that we will lead them to it by trying to protect it."
Evelyn stared at me with her mouth open, "You're divergent." It wasn't a question but a statement. I stared at her not saying a word. But she said, "You need to hide that around them. You're too smart for your own good here. You're brave but your also kind and will stand up for others. I'm surprised they haven't already tried to take you out."
I stared at her harder, "who says they haven't?" I look back at Tobias, "You need to get some sleep. If you don't, Max will be on your case. We can't blow our cover."
He nodded and turned to his mom, "You need to get back. We have to discuss how we're going to handle this soon. But for now we're going to play everything out. We have to give them the rope to hang themselves."
Evelyn walked back to the window, "We will keep hacking away for data. If we come up with anything significant, I will let you know." She looked back at me, "Please don't try to shoot me next time."
I glared at her, "Don't scare me to death and I won't."
We stopped in at the training room the next morning before going to work and Max was just unlocking it. He studied Four and said, "Good, you got some sleep. What are your plans for tonight?"
Four shrugged one shoulder but answered with confidence, "I figured we would finish out what we were doing before dinner last night. I'd also like to take everyone out into the city tonight. Put them through real world training. What do you think about a more intense version of capture the flag? Team A against Team B? Five flags for each team. All the flags have to be captured to win."
Max thought and grinned, "We'll use the shock darts instead of paint balls. I like it! We could repeat it after the fear landscape team challenges and see if there is any improvement next week." He looked at me, "you need to make him sleep more often." And he laughed at his own joke.
Four and I went to the cabinets that held all the training equipment and pulled out the dart guns, ammunition, and flags, laying them out for tonight. "Do we want the radio equipment?"
He thought for a moment then gave me a look that I knew now to read as we will discuss this further later, "Team A will have theirs so I'd like to have the same thing."
I nodded knowing he had a plan. When we were through setting things out we went and got some muffins and headed to work. I was working on my tablet to update Shelly on some information when I got a message from Eric I rolled my eyes before I opened it.
"Hey, your boyfriend is going down tonight. And then you and I can get down to business," he wrote.
I sent him a message back that said, "Still not interested."
Then he sent me a dick pic on work e-mail, I closed it out quickly and excused myself to the bathroom feeling like I was going to vomit. That was disgusting. When I came back I was still white but settling down. But when I checked my email again that one had disappeared. That pissed me off more. He had way too much control over things around here. If I had the chance I knew exactly what I would be aiming at tonight.
But wait; taking a breath I realized that's exactly what he wanted me to do. If I was focused on him then I wouldn't be focused on my team. Settling back down I refocused and remembered there were bigger problems. Problems he was involved in, probably heavily, but I'm sure this was just trying to distract me.
I met Tobias on our way back to the training room. He found a hallway and pulled me into it. "Before we leave check all the ammunition to make sure it's the right stuff. Eric will cheat."
"Yeah I know. He sent me an email today that was intended to distract me. Let's just say it was disgusting." I said. "But he was able to delete it so I couldn't report it."
Tobias grimaced, "Actually, I deleted it. I've been keeping tabs on your e-mail just in case he tried to pull that. Well, I actually moved it to a different file for future evidence if we need it."
I glared at him, "You're monitoring MY emails?" I asked.
"I monitor everyone's emails, well Dauntless emails anyway," he said with a shrug. "Yours? I just take a special interest in."
"When do you have time?" I asked incredulously.
"I have some programs set up that constantly scan the emails for certain words or phrases. I'm not doing it myself." He said on a sigh.
We heard voices coming up the hallway towards the training room and Eric's maniacal laugh. Tobias grabbed me and kissed me pushing me up against the wall.
"Hey, enough of that!" Max yelled down our hall. "We have work to do."
Tobias pulled back giving me a look and then spinning to look at Max with a half grin. "Sorry, just getting it out of my system."
I straightened my jacket and hair following Four out of the hallway and trying to ignore the snarl Eric let out. Interesting, maybe I could turn his trying to distract me back on him. I grinned at Max with a shrug and a smile, "Sorry, but this happens when he's actually had sleep."
Max tried to keep a straight face but grinned, "As long as it's not a distraction."
When we entered the training room Four helped me stretch out and warm up. I looked over at where Eric was going through Team A's equipment and preparing for the night, "We need to check the radios too. Eric has probably hacked them."
Four grinned back at me, "I'm actually counting on it."
I looked up and grinned back, "I'm still mad at you about my emails, but do you know I love you."
His grin became a full smile, "You won't be mad at me when you find out why I do what I do. But I love you too."
When the rest of the candidates came in the room you could tell that their energy had returned and they were raring to go. We finished up our training from the night before and when we went to supper there was a lot more camaraderie going on between the candidates and leadership. My friends had separated from me again but I could feel them looking over at Four and myself.
Max yelled over from his table, "Four! Six! You ready?"
Four nodded with a grin, "Are you?"
Max grinned bigger than I have ever seen him grin. "Let's go"
The candidate sitting next to me asked what was up, I smiled, "Capture the flag, extreme."
The word made its way down the tables, and I look back at Max and he had a full on smile. He was enjoying this a little too much. But maybe he was just feeding off the energy of the others.
We went back to the training room to suit up and get ready. Four pointed to our table of equipment "Christina, help Six check all the ammo and guns. We're using shock darts tonight. You get hit, it will hurt. Also check your radios with me. Make sure they work."
Chris went through the guns and held one up, "This one is jamming, and I'm getting another one." She went to the cabinet put that one in tagging it with a red tag to look at later and then grabbed another one and checked it. She quickly went through and double checked ammo to make sure they were what they were supposed to be, and handed them over to each team member."
Will looked up from the table, while he was suiting up, "Five flags?"
Four nodded, "Yep, we have to capture all of their flags to win."
Will shook his head and mumbled, "How do I get myself into this shit?"
Four smiled, "Because you're Dauntless."
We all went out and jumped on the train. Team A was on one car and they were going to get off first. Team B was in the car behind them. As soon as we saw Team A had all jumped off Four pulled us in. "Turn your radio's off." Everyone looked confused. And he repeated quietly but sternly, "Turn. Them. Off."
When everyone had their's off he said, "They have the radios bugged, we can't trust them. I will be giving orders over it once in awhile but ignore them completely. He handed us light disks, "each of you take one of these. They are looking for five glowing flags. We are going to misdirect the hell out of them." He handed out second disks. "These have a radio in them. I will use these to contact you for real orders. It's on a complete different frequency."
One of the candidates, Benning, looked up, "Are there any rules that the flag has to be planted stationary?"
Four looked at him and shook his head, "This is the first time we've done this, like this. There are no rules."
"I'm your best long distance runner; give me a flag I'll just run until you capture all of theirs."
Four nodded and held out the flag, "If you get into trouble use the radio disk with the code word 'Castle'" Benning nodded and grabbing the flag he went to wait by the door. Four looked at me, "Chris and Six, you're going to go high and get the vantage point." Then he looked at the others, "I need four of you to take the other flags and hide them. Get creative. If you can get there so can they and you won't have anyone to back you up because we have to go find the other flags and create distractions. What we have on our side is we are younger. But they have experience."
Four volunteers stepped up and took flags.
Zeke came up to me, "Zipline." I nodded and then he told Four his idea. "Go to the end of the zipline. We can get the best view of the city there. Those two can see all the flags and tell us where to find them.
Four nodded, "Good thinking."
"He turned to us all as we were closing in on the main part of the city, "Guys, remember, there are no rules here. They can try to get their flags back so once you get one, get it out of sight." Everyone nodded. We waited for him to give the signal and once he did we all went running in different directions.
We ran for a while and then Four got on the bugged radios, "Six, you copy?"
I came back, "I copy" even though we were only about 20 feet from each other. He came back "Take Will and Zeke and head towards the Ferris wheel.
"Copy that," I said with a grin. Then we all headed for the Hancock tower.
Chris came up to me and asked, "Six, what's the zipline?"
I did a double take and remembered she wasn't there for that, "Just, pretty much, the scariest thing you will ever do in your life." When we got to the Hancock building I said, "It starts up there."
"And you've done this?" she asked me increduolously.
"Mmhmmmmm," I said knowing that she is realizing she doesn't know as much about me as she thought.
"Okay, well that's just great," she said and I could tell she was not happy.
"Look, stay focused." I said trying to get her back on track, "You watch the left side and I'll watch the right. We have to find those flags," I couldn't allow her to get sidetracked right now.
Zeke strapped us in at the top and said good luck. I went first because I knew what I was doing at this point. As I'm sliding down I see three of their colored flags one just outside Dauntless, one near Abnegation, and another near the bean.
When we got back to our group on the ground we Chris said she saw one hopping back on the train and one near candor headquarters.
Four grumbled, "They're trying to split us up and spread us out where we can't help each other."
"So we stay together and take them one at a time. It's going to suck but it's the only way we can do it." Christina stated.
"Yeah, we'll drop the light disks along the way and try to distract the ones looking for ours." One of the other candidates added.
The bean was the closest so that's the first one we went after. There were only three of their team members guarding that flag and we were able to take it pretty quickly. The second one was near Candor, and it was a little harder because the first ones were trying to take their flag back while we were fighting to get the second one. By the third one at Abnegation they had caught on with what we were doing but Four and I knew the area around Abnegation too well and they couldn't compete with that knowledge. I had a feeling we were giving the leaders more information than I wanted to, but I also hoped we could use that in our favor later.
Suddenly we heard a noise over our disk radios and we heard our runner say, "I've got the flag from the train. They have a man down and hurt. They won't be happy about it."
Four looked at me worried, then answered, "What happened?"
"He saw me from the train and tried to jump off to come after me, looks like he broke an ankle. I grabbed the flag. He's called in for help. I'd stay but I don't want to be bombarded."
Four called back, "He'll be good until help arrives. Keep going. We will head in to the last one. Hang out until I call you in. I want to make sure they don't get our last flag."
"Will do," Benning called back, "And I noticed those decoys you've been putting out. Team A has been all over finding them. They are not happy with you."
Four chuckled, "Well, maybe, I taught them something."
He gathered everyone in, "Make sure those flags are hidden, on separate people. If you get attacked do everything you can to get away and meet us back at Dauntless. We are going to have to split up for this one and come in from different directions. Six, take Chris, Will, and Zeke and get a vantage point over the last flag. I'll take the rest and split into two sections. Radio us when you see something."
Zeke took the lead on finding a building around Dauntless that would be tall enough to see anything. My fear was what if that flag was on top of one of those buildings. And worse, I hadn't seen Eric or Max at any of the other flags. Di had been at the third one and I'd taken her elbow to my jaw but I flipped her on to the ground and ran off. I didn't really like possibly hurting my boss, not unless it was necessary.
Zeke moved towards the opening of one of the buildings but something felt off about it to me. "Hold up, Zeke," I said catching up to him, "If it were me I'd be on the tallest building around here. So I could see anyone coming at me. They intend this to be the hardest one to get. But if we get on that building they will take us out before we can get them. We need a way to get above them but they not see us."
Zeke looked around, "I got it, but it's dangerous."
"What?" I asked.
"There's an old radio tower on top of a building a couple blocks over. If we climb that we can shoot down from above them and create cover so Four can come up from underneath. But that tower is rickety."
"Let me climb it first and see if I can see them. I could be completely wrong. So before we go in all guns blazing let's check." I said.
Zeke shook his head, "I doubt you're wrong."
We ran over and got to the roof. I could see what he meant about the rickety tower. I didn't have a choice though so I started to climb. It was hard to stay quiet on the metal that was creaking beneath my weight. I heard Zeke mumbling something and could see he had one of our communicator disks in his hands. I got to about midway on the tower and could just see Eric and Max on the roof of the building that we almost went in a few minutes earlier. We would have walked into a trap. They were trolling the top lazily with about half of Team A, and the flag was planted right in the middle of them. I climbed back down. And told Zeke we needed to go back in the building we were on and regroup. I called Four in and we all met up in the same building. "What do you want to do? We go over and in that building we are all getting nailed. But we can't go home without trying to get that flag?"
Four grinned and pulled up his Dauntless issued radio and waved me away a little bit so we wouldn't get feedback, "Six, do you copy."
"Copy," I said back.
"The last flag has been spotted, along with most of Team A. They are guarding it like it's got the secret to the universe," he said back.
"Copy that. Not surprising, you know Eric is too lazy to do anything the hard way," I said back laughing quietly. "Are we sure he's even Dauntless?"
Four gave me a look and tried not to laugh when we heard a shout from the other building. Something to the tone of "Fucking Bitch, I'll show her." And a lot of other laughter followed in the quiet night.
Then we heard Max say something back.
"Wow, It looks like Eric is pretty agitated, I wonder what about?" Four said again over the radio. "I can't hear what he said."
"What do you want to do?" I said back trying to come to some conclusion.
Four held up a hand to me and pulled out our own communicators calling our runner. "Benning, where are you at right now?"
"I'm by the Hub right now," he answered.
"Okay, then get as far away from Millennial as possible. I'm going to call you on the regulation radios and you need to tell me you are in Millennial. We are going to try and get some of Team A away from the last flag," Four said.
"You got it boss." He said back.
Four grabbed the bugged radio and said, "Benning, where're you at?"
"I'm down here in Millenial. You ready for us to come in? Is it over?" he asked pretending to be excited. I also noticed he used a plural term. He was reading the situation really well. The more they thought was out the more people they would send out.
Four shook his head, "Nope, hang tight and keep your eyes open. We haven't seen all of Team A so I'm sure some are still out there. They've got all of our flags but yours."
"Alright, we'll keep our eyes open," he said back.
We watched down at the street to see several of Team A come out one of the doors and start heading towards millennial. I look over at Four and tell him I'll go back up the tower and check how many is left.
The second time up the tower was a little scarier because I could feel the metal giving way that didn't quite break the first time around. I got just high enough to see that there were only about a quarter of Team A left. We outnumbered them by about 5 but we would have to get to them. It was going to be a tough fight.
I came back down and met back with Four, "We have a numbers advantage now but we have to get to them. And they have Max and Eric."
Four looked at Zeke, "Is there another way in besides the door they went out."
Zeke thought, "Yeah, but we'll have to climb up the elevator shaft once we're in. We can get into the basement but the stairs are gone."
"How far up does the elevator go?" I asked.
"It will take us up to the top floor. The Elevator no longer works so we don't have to worry about that. Are you thinking about climbing that whole thing?" Zeke asked me/
Four looked at me with exasperation, "I'm not."
"So we will space out and meet at the top floor. We need to clear the rest of the building to make sure nobody comes up behind us while we are taking the roof. We don't know if there is anyone left IN the building." I said back.
"Fine, let's move out and get in the basement first." Four stated as we started working our way out.
Zeke led us into the building and helped us find the elevator shaft where Four handed out the assigned floors to us. Those of us who had the top floors went first. Christina was right behind me. We worked it out where we were reaching our floors at about the same time and were able to clear the building quickly. They apparently expected us to use the main stairs because they only had people on those stairs. This was suspiciously easy, but I knew the roof would not be. That's where it would be close if we had a chance at all.
We found the stairs to the roof and Zeke, Uriah, and Will took the front with several others to save Four and I for the back end. They knew they would probably be taken out but hopefully they could take several out before we got out. Then it would be Four and I against Max and Eric, with help from any of the rest that survived the initial assault. At least that's how we hoped it would be.
Zeke cracked the door to the roof and the others were distracted with looking over the edge. He put the muzzle of his gun through the crack. Uriah was kneeling above him and Will was standing over both of them. Three guns trained out using the door as a shield, and they started shooting. Zeke took out 4 of team A before they realized what was happening. Then they started shooting back and Uriah and Will just charged through and sprayed the shock darts as Zeke followed behind them. Taking several, themselves, before collapsing in pain from being hit several times. The rest of us came out afterward and continued the barrage of darts.
My eyes were on the flag and I was running towards it when I got hit in the leg with a dart. Crap that freaking hurt but I pulled it out and kept going, shooting anything I could. Then my gun jammed and I had to throw it down, and started running without it. I saw too late that Eric was standing holding on to the flag and grinning at me. So to get the flag I had to take him out but I didn't have a gun. But I did have darts still. I pulled several of them out of their holders on my vest and started throwing them almost like knives. The pointy end just needed to make contact with skin to be somewhat effective. I kept throwing them until they started hitting him. That freaking worked, he was screaming like a little girl. I got close enough and grabbed the flag he dropped but he grabbed my ankle and tried to take me down. Grabbing another dart I slammed it into his hand. And he let go!
I yelled, "I HAVE THE FLAG!" and everything went dead silent.
Max turned around to face me in shock, and pulled the dart out of his shoulder. "Son of a Bitch! How did you do that?"
Four spoke up, "We were willing to go for it. And some of our team was willing to sacrifice themselves."
Then across their radios I heard, "Max there is no one in Millenial."
Max looked at Four and Four laughed and pulled out his disk communicator. "Benning, you can come in now. We've won." Then he said to Max, "Do you really think I'm stupid enough to leave equipment out thinking it wouldn't be tampered with. I knew Eric couldn't resist."
Benning called back over the communicator, "Thank you. Can I get a pass for work tomorrow? It might take me a while to get back."
Max asked, "Where is he at?"
Four shook his head chuckling, "I don't have a clue, he's been running all over the city tonight."
"By himself?" Max asked.
Four nodded, "Yep, like I said sacrifices were made."
Then we heard Benning come over the communicator, "Hey does it still count getting one of our flags back after we won. Someone dropped one of ours on the road going towards Mellenial and I picked it up."
Max just shook his head and walked towards the door to the roof. "Pack it up, let's go home."
Eric walked past me and glared at me then at Four, "You'll pay for this." He said through gritted teeth and dropping the spent darts at my feet.
We picked up all the equipment and made our way back home. Zeke, Uriah, and Will had to be helped for a little bit. The darts sting took a little bit to get out of your system. But those three egged it on for awhile. Christina was more than willing to hero worship Will. I smiled at them.
Max was talking to Four ahead of me so I could overhear him. "That should not have happened. We should have taken you."
Four shrugged, "My team had nothing to lose, and everything to gain. We had to be creative because we know your training. So we did what we had to do. Honestly I didn't know if we would get the last flag. I knew it wouldn't have happened without casualties."
Max nodded, "That's one of the things about being a leader. You have to know that sacrifices have to be made." He shook his head, "Speaking of casualties it sounds like I've got an injury on Team A. What do you think about filling that spot for a few weeks until he heals? You kind of owe me. If we get called out I'll need you to step up."
I could tell it wasn't really a question but an order. And so could Four, "Temporarily, yes, but Team B is my team. Six can handle it if both teams are called out, but I go back to them once I'm not needed."
Max looked back at me and then at Four, "No problem. I wouldn't want to mess with a good set up."
I wasn't sure I could trust Max with that. I think he would find any opportunity to use Four higher up and I might just be a tag along to him.
Max looked back at me again and then said, "I'll need you both to debrief in the morning about tonight. I'll make excuses for you at work. We need to know what you did out there. We can't expect anyone to fight the same way we do so we need to know all the angles. Fantastic job you two!"
