It had been 3 months since Jay had been working undercover.
It felt like years for Erin, and not just because she was pregnant.
She missed Jay so much. Texting wasn't enough for her, she wanted to be able to physically see him with her own eyes and hear his voice. She hated that they couldn't even communicate on the phone at risk of others listening in.
Within the 3 months she had been taking care of herself, and the baby. She had a small bump now so the whole team knew about the baby. They all congratulated her, and let her know that they were there for her and she deeply appreciated it. She could see in their faces sometimes the pity of her situation, not that she was doing everything alone but she didn't have Jay at her side.
The morning sickness would come and go, her team was use to her sneaking out of the office and making a run for the bathroom. Kim would often find Erin and help her through it, holding her hair back and talking to her. The girls had definitely gotten closer. Kim would come over for girl nights and stay with Erin giving her the comfort she needed especially at night when her mind could keep her up all night.
She just kept her routine up with work and her check ups at the hospital. She was trying her hardest to do what Jay wanted her to. Sometimes it was hard for her to want to do anything at all. She felt like so much was happening and changing, and he wasn't there for it.
She tried wearing her favorite pair of jeans to work but one day she couldn't get them to zip up, and spent about an hour crying over it. Everyone said she was glowing but she certainly did not feel like it.
The one thing really getting her through it all was her nightly texts to Jay. They were short, but they were sweet and they let her know he was okay.
After washing her face and brushing her teeth, she would throw on one of his t-shirts which sat shorter on her thigh due to her growing stomach and jump in bed. Checking her phone she would always see that he texted her first.
I miss and love you so much. I'm okay.
It was like she could hear him saying it, but in her head he sounded exhausted. When you know someone so well, and you love them so much Erin thought it was normal for her to be able to notice how he felt from just words on her phone. She would always reply with the same response.
Love and miss you too. We are waiting for you to come home. Be safe.
The texts were keeping her afloat.
Erin had been working the desk upstairs, taking phone calls and doing paperwork with the occasional chime in on a case. She knew that Voight didn't want her involved in cases, because she would want to continue them out and go be in the field. Knowing she couldn't do that would hurt her more in the end, so she didn't complain when it came to working the desk.
It had been a normal morning, actually a good morning in Erin's case due to the lack of morning sickness. Any day without a start of puking seemed like a success to her. They had been particularly busy but Erin was good on her feet, she liked to be moving and out and about. She would have loved to have a warm caffeinated drink for an extra boost, but decaf would have to do. She really did miss her coffee.
She was continuing her work, when she noticed Atwater run over to Voight's office. This peaked her interest due to the case they were working on being pretty quiet at the moment. She watched as Voight grabbed his jacket and took off after Atwater. She wanted to know what was happening maybe help if possible.
"Voigh-"
He cut her off as he followed down the stairs, "Just stay here."
She would have shrugged it off and continued to work if it wasn't for the tone he used when he spoke to her. There was worry in his voice, and that was normally not there unless something was wrong. Erin immediately went to find Burgess asking about Atwater and what was going on. Sadly no one knew anything, so whatever Atwater found he must have taken it straight to Voight. This calmed her a bit but not entirely. Something wasn't right.
After the rest of her day finished out, she had been in a weird mood. Kim had asked if she wanted to grab dinner but she passed. She just wanted to go home and lay down. She really wished she could go home and be in Jay's arms.
Once getting home she reheated some leftovers and plopped down on the couch to watch tv. After eating she decided she needed to relax and run a bath to try and help with the anxiety she had been feeling all day. Finally ending her night off back on the couch watching Friends reruns. She had slipped into her favorite pair of leggings and one of Jay's shirts.
She laid and watched for an hour keeping a protective hand on her bump, eventually falling asleep.
When she woke it was past midnight, the tv playing softly still. She immediately went to go check her phone to text back to Jay not wanting to worry him.
Except when she checked her phone there was no text from Jay, which never happens. Her mind started running piecing what she witnessed today and her not receiving a text together. Her heart dropped, something was wrong.
Now she was the worried one.
