50 million years ago, before the human race and the animal kingdom fully evolved, dinosaurs walked the earth as one of the very first creatures to rule the planet.
One day, the dinosaurs all vanished off the face of the Earth, save for a handful who went into hiding somewhere in the changing world to escape being wiped out of existance, in order to preserve the dino race, as the humans and mammals evolved and civilization began.
In the early days of the human race, post-dinosaur period, the advanced city of Atlantis experimented with science, leading to the creation of giant turtle monsters, one of which was named Gamera, after a prehistoric giant turtle that had existed during the time of the dinosaurs and fought with many dinosaurs.
One day, Atlantis vanished and Gamera's kind vanished as well, leaving Gamera until he too disappeared into the Earth...
For many years, with the relics of Earth's ancient past vanishing into history and prehistory, many of it became only legends.
Very few forgot about the legend of Atlantis and its experiments, failing to realize the possibility that not all of the dinosaurs had faded out and a handful had survived. But then, one day...
The ancient past and the modern present collided. 9 years after the horrific event known as World War II, American nuclear tests in the pacific awoke something never seen before.
A surviving dinosaur colony, which had been sleeping in the pacific for centuries, was exposed to the radiation from the nuclear blast and most were wiped out, save for one.
The surviving creature's name was... GODZILLA!
Enraged and seeking revenge against mankind, the monster rose from Tokyo Bay on August 6th, 1954, 9 years after the first nuclear bomb struck the city of Hiroshima. Godzilla lay waste to the city of Tokyo, leaving chaos, death and destruction in his path.
Nothing could stop this creature forged from nuclear testing and centuries of sleeping, not even the Japanese military.
After destroying Tokyo, Godzilla returned to the ocean, leaving the city devastated and millions, either injured, sick with radiation or dying. With the kaiju seemingly unstoppable, there seemed to be no hope, no other way to defeat the menace and save the world.
"Will the world be destroyed by a million-year-old monster?"
-Japanese reporter during Godzilla's attack
But when it looked like all hope seemed to be lost. It turned out, there was a way to defeat Godzilla. A lone scientist named Dr. Serizawa had invented the Oxygen Destroyer, a weapon capable of dissolving matter in water and eliminating all marine life in the area.
Despite being worse than nuclear weapons, there were no options left, the king of the monsters had to be stopped.
Dr Serizawa was approached by good friends, who asked him for the use of the Oxygen Destroyer. Reluctant at first, Serizawa agreed, but the weapon would be only used once. Heading down to Tokyo bay where the Kaiju lay sleeping, Dr Serizawa activated the Oxygen Destroyer...
The device worked. The ancient monster known as Godzilla was destroyed, finally beaten after so much trial and error. The military couldn't stop him with conventional warfare, but in the end, a horrible weapon worse than nuclear weapons could do it.
But to ensure the weapon was never used again and the secret vanished forever, Dr Serizawa cut his oxygen supply, sacrificing his own existence during Godzilla's execution.
In one day, two individuals, who shared much in common due to being victims of nuclear weapons, met their ends together. Over the years, Japan recovered and the world began to move on, seemingly ignoring the ancient past. Even though one believed that there were other Godzillas out there.
"If we continue nuclear testing, then another Godzilla will appear out there, somewhere in the world." -Dr Yamane.
"The menace was gone, so was a great man. But the world could wake up and live again." -Steve Martin
In June of 1969, nearly 15 years after Godzilla was defeated, a nuclear explosion in the Arctic caused by a crashing Soviet plane woke up the ancient long-lost giant turtle known as Gamera from his ancient sleep. Like the monster known as Gojira, Gamera attacked civilization, going after a nuclear power plant in Iwo Jima off the coast of Japan before attacking Tokyo.
Like Godzilla, Gamera was a fire-breathing monster who could not be stopped with weaponry. In the end, things changed. Garyaos, a rogue Atlantean turtle also of Gamera's race, made its appearance and attacked Japan. Gamera fought the beast and, in the end, was able to destroy it, thus becoming a hero to the world.
Gojira faded from history as Gamera took his place, proving to be a more popular topic among international talks of giant monsters. But the wounds of the 1954 attack were still fresh, many still remembered when the huge dinosaur rose from Tokyo Harbor.
With Godzilla fading into history, details of his defeat became sparse and many still hoped the beast would not return, fearing that if it did happen, he would be more unstoppable than ever before. In the late 70s, 20 years after the defeat of Gojira, the people of Tokyo dreamed nightmares of a giant monster 100 stories higher than the first one with dorsal plates rising from the ocean to attack and decimate cities.
Many hoped the return of Godzilla and a possible destructive battle between him and Gamera was just a fever dream. The monster was gone, he couldn't come back.
But then, years ago...
-1987-
The nuclear-powered Soviet submarine Black Heart moved slowly beneath the depths of the ocean, its sonar pinging quietly and its engines low.
The submarine had been in active service for only a year, manufactured on New Year's Eve in 1985 and put into service in the second quarter of 1986.
Its purpose: Explore the ocean, gather intelligence and function without being fitted for war as well as observe nuclear testing without taking up too much radiation.
So far, in the early stages, the submarine had performed very well and had brought back valuable intelligence for Moscow. Especially in regards to American submarine activity.
The sub was operated by a crew of 7 to 10 men with only two KGB officers on board, monitoring everything and making sure there was no treason against Moscow, almost mirroring scenarios where, during World War II, SS officers were posted aboard German U-Boats to make sure there was nothing suspicious.
Captain Vladkov Soltovetsky was a decorated submarine commander, having been in the navy for 10 years and following in the footsteps of the late Yosef Soltovsky, a war veteran who'd sank 30 Nazi U-Boats more so than the other submarine commanders of the Second World War.
A man at age 32, born in June of 1955 to Soltovsky (who'd changed up his last name to Soltovetsky) and Laria Natashia, Vladkov had enlisted in the navy at age 19 and risen through the ranks until Moscow trusted him enough to command Black Heart.
Vladkov was not a man of war, he preferred manning weaponless ships, be it nuclear or cargo. His trustworthy second in command Corporal Bonchetsky, who was Ukrainian by birth, had been involved in the Navy for only a year and was nowhere close to retiring until he'd received a big promotion.
PING PING PONG PING PING PONG! "Captain Soltovetsky," A submarine officer said, he was one of the people monitoring the geiger counter and sonar as the radar started beeping like mad, "My sobiryam bol'shuyu kontsentratsiyu radiatsii, chto-to ryadom. We are picking up a high concentration of radioactivity, probably from American nuclear testing, something contaminated with radiation seems to be close by and we request permission to investigate."
Caprain Soltovetsky, who was in the same room, got on the radio, "Radiatsionny otdel, chto-nibud' soobdchit? Radiation Department, do you have anything to report?"
"My ponyatiya ne imeyem, kapitan. On pokhozh na drugoy atomyy submarin i nakhodistya s radioaktivnost'yu 5 uronya! No clue, captain. Its like maybe another nuclear submarine is close by and its covered in a high concentration of Level 5 Radiation." The RD replied.
"Yesil by podobnaya radioaktivnost'byla na takom urvon, okean kipel by ot radiatsii. Level 5 radiation is the most leathal, if the radiation were that high, it would be extremely dangerous and somehow cause the ocean to boil and become radioactive."
"Captain?" Bonchetsky asked, "Dolzhny Il my idti v sos toyaniye krasnogo? Should we go to condition red, battle stations?" Soltovetsky's response was firm, "Nyet. My bezorzuzhny, luchshy vairiant vyzval' podkrepleniye i otsenit' situatsiyu! We are not armed with weapons, we do not carry torpedos.
"The best option is to call for reinforcements, maybe radio Moscow for an attack sub and they will deal with it. Option B is to call in the air force, assuming we have an aircraft carrier in the area. Until back up comes, our best course is to analyze the situation."
BZZZZZT!
"Kapitan, eto radiatsionyy otdel. Captain, this is the radiation observatory and scanning department." Sakowski Sochaki reported over the radio. "My skanirovali mestnost' i nashli chto-to… YEGO GIGANTSKIY DINOSAUR NAPRAVLYETSAY!
"We have been scanning the area and we have picked up an object on our screens, it is huge, black and… ITS SOME KIND OF GIANT DINOSAUR AND ITS HEADING THIS WAY, RIGHT TOWARD US!"
The captain turned to his crew, "Send out an S.O.S and prepare to abandon ship, all hands. We are under attack and we are helpless without weapons."
Just as the submarine crew was sending out radio messages and getting ready to abandon ship (aka prepare the lifeboats), violent vibrations and explosions rocked Black Heart as it apparently ran into something.
Water began to flood the room and people screamed, sparks flew and fires ignited. The last thing the crew could hear as they went down with the submarine was a loud and monstrous earth shattering roar that wasn't too reminiscent of a dinosaur roar or the roar of a giant monster…
