Sonic

"Come on, Sonia!" I yelled, banging my fist against the locked bathroom door. "You've been in there over an hour! I'm only asking for a twenty-minute shower!"

"Alright, alright! I'm almost finished! Calm down before you break the damn door!"

"At least open the door so I can put my clothes down."

Huffing in frustration, my sister opened the door. Her wet curls were pulled up into a bun, exposing all of the dark passion marks covering her neck. Her face was covered with green cream, only the circles of her eyes and lips bare from the wretched color.

"What were you doing? In here looking like the Wicked Witch of the West."

She rolled her eyes, turning back to the mirror. A plethora of hair and skin care products were spread out around the sink. Her phone lay next to the array, playing Kehlani's recent album. "It's called a skin care routine - something your ashy ass wouldn't know about."

"Can't you do this in your room?"

"Can't you wash up outside like the rest of the cave men?"

I shoved her against the sink, making room to move past her. "Your friend was looking for you yesterday."

"I know. I talked to her earlier."

"Too busy making that fuckface happy that you can't respond to Amy's text messages?"

"Honestly, Sonic, we were asleep most of yesterday. Like I said, I spoke to Amy earlier, and it's all good now."

I sat down on the closed toilet bowl, waiting for Sonia to gather her things and get out. My eyes fell down to her back, noticing the large purple bruise covering her left shoulder blade. I raised an eyebrow. "What the hell happened there?"

She barely glanced back at the mark, too busy stacking her products in her arms. "One of the hairdryers fell off the shelf earlier and hit me square in the back. Mrs. Lopez put some ice on it."

"Does it hurt? Looks pretty nasty."

She shrugged. "It's not the worst casualty I've caught at that place." She motioned to the burn mark on her forearm. "Remember that?"

A smile tugged at my lips at the memory. Mrs. Lopez finally let Sonia experiment with one of her new hair curlers and the first thing she managed to do was burn herself. She called me freaking out, and I had to carry her all the way to urgent care. "Like it was yesterday."

"I'll be fine," she assured me.

I checked the time on my phone. It was getting late, and I needed to take a shower. I stood up. "If you say so." I shoved Sonia out of the bathroom, nearly knocking half of the products out of her arms. "Now get out. I'm taking a shower."

"Hey!" She yelled as I slammed the door in her face. "I wasn't finished!"
