Chapter 6: Sick
Bella's POV
"Jacob!" I yelled as soon as he came through the door. It had been years since I had seen my best friend. Edward gave me a look of disapproval as I hugged Jacob. But I did not care. I missed him.
"Hey Bells," Jake said with a smile plastered on his face.
"I missed you Jake,"
"I missed you to," he said.
For a second I felt as if everything would be alright in the world now that Jacob was here. It was hard not to feel happy that now that my personal sun was here. "Jake we could have picked you up at the airport. You didn't have to drive all the way over here,"
"It's no big deal Bella. Besides I didn't drive. I ran,"
"You ran? But where's your luggage?"
He rolled his eyes. "It looks like the airline lost it. They're going to try to locate it. If I'm lucky I'll have it by tomorrow. Anyway enough about me. Where's Nessie? Is she okay?"
If I could cry I would've. Telling Jacob that Nessie was dying was not going to be easy. Neither will telling him about Nessie's memory loss be easy either. This was going to hurt him just as much as it had hurt us.
"Nessie isn't here," I answered.
"I don't understand," he said. "Where is she?"
"Jake you might want to have a seat for this," Edward spoke. He tried to remain as emotionless as possible. But I knew my husband well. He was just trying to keep it together for my sake. Jacob look confused but he didn't question Edward. I sighed. This wasn't going to be easy at all. But I decided to start with the easier bit of news first.
"Nessie does not remember us,"
"What do you mean she doesn't remember us? She has amnesia?"
"It appears that way,"
"But how so?"
"We don't know that Jake. Carlisle is completely stumped as to why that is,"
"Speaking of Carlisle where is everybody else?" Jake asked.
"Carlisle went to work. He won't be home until late tonight. Esme got a job as a teacher. Alice and Rosalie went shopping. Nobody knows when they'll be back. Jasper and Emmett decided to go hunting out of state. So for now only Edward and I are here,"
"Bella and I stayed behind because we knew that you were coming," Edward added.
"So Nessie really doesn't remember anything?" Jacob asked again. "I don't understand how that is possible,"
"Neither do we Jacob. But Carlisle swears that she wasn't faking memory loss when he saw her yesterday," I sighed. "It also seems that the Denalis knew she was here for years," I added.
Jake's head spun so fast that it almost made me dizzy. "What? How? Why didn't they say anything before?"
"We do not know the answers to any of those questions yet Jacob. We haven't confronted the Denalis yet. We're trying to figure out what the best way to do that is. All we do know is that Nessie knew them. She knew them. She told Carlisle that she has been friends with them for years," Edward snarled. His fury matched my own.
Every time I thought about the situation with the Denalis, which was quite often, I wanted to go rip the lot of them to shreds. How could they do this to us?! They knew that we have been searching for my daughter nonstop for more then ten years and they chose to keep this information from us?! If it wasn't for them we would have found Nessie years ago. If we'd found her years ago then maybe she would not be so sick right now. I didn't not understand why they would even think about keeping a secret as big as this from us. She is my daughter!
"So let me get this straight. They have known Nessie for years and never once thought to mention that to you? Am I understanding that correctly?"
"Unfortunately yes," I growled.
"So what do we do now?"
"Right now the Denalis are not our biggest concern," Edward spoke. "Nessie is,"
If it were possible for a vampire to be sick I would have been sick right now. I felt nothing but pure dread right now. Just pure dread.
"What are you talking about? Do you think the amnesia will be permanent? Amnesia is reversible isn't it?"
"Edward isn't talking about the amnesia," was it possible to throw up animal blood? Because I had the oddest sensation that I was about to vomit. "He is talking about her illness,"
"What Damm illness?!" I knew the worry that he felt right now was next to the nothing compared to the worry he was about to feel. "What's wrong with her? Just spit it out!"
"She has stage IV lung cancer," I could barely get the words out before I broke down in tearless sobs. My chest heaving. Edward's arms supported me. Though I could hear his own tear less sobs resonating in his chest. "Carlisle estimates that she only has 3-6 months left,"
"What exactly are you saying?" he said each word slowly. As if speaking at a slower rate would somehow change the answer.
"She's dying Jacob," I sobbed. "She's dying and there isn't anything we can do to stop it,"
Jacob's crying was the only thing I could hear right now. His face was stained with the tears none of the rest of us could produce. I felt jealous of him right then and there. There were times when I missed being able to cry. I missed having that outlet for my emotions. Right now I missed that more then ever. I wanted to cry. I wanted to let out my sadness but I couldn't. I just couldn't.
For awhile nobody said anything. I couldn't bear to watch Jacob crying any longer. "Come on Bella," Edward said softly into my ear. "He wants to be alone right now,"
That was a few hours ago. "What's going to happen to Jacob if Nessie dies?" I asked. I was afraid to even think about what would happen to Edward and I if she died.
"I don't know," he admitted. "He has Leah so maybe he would be okay. But losing an imprint isn't something the wolves have ever had to deal with before,"
"Leah?"
"I guess Jacob never told you did he? He and Leah Clearwater got married a few years ago. They love each other and they helped heal one another's pain. But she is not his imprint and Leah knows that. She's always known that there was a huge possibility he'd go for Nessie if we ever found her,"
"You got all of that from reading Jacob's mind?"
Before Edward could answer the question we heard Jake coming toward us.
"It's something we have considered," Edward said.
"Considered what?" I hated when Edward did this. Can't they all just speak aloud so I can hear to?"
"Jacob is saying that we should change Nessie into a vampire in order to save her life,"
"If it saves Nessie's life you should do it. Today. Right now," Jacob said.
"While I agree that it is a great idea It's really not that simple. She has no idea who we are. How do you think she will react if we just go up to her and tell her that, not only are we her real family, but that we're also vampires as well?"
"Bella I don't think we have time to wait simply because we're worried of how she'll react," Jake replied. "What if Carlisle is wrong and she dies sooner? What if she died tonight?"
I shuddered at what Jacob was saying. He did have a point. What if we had even less time then we realized?
"It's getting dark," Jacob said looking a little worried all of a sudden.
"Yes. And?"
"I need to go find my daughters. I left them alone a lot longer then I realized,"
"You're what?"
"My daughters," Jake smiled. "I have two daughters. Emma and Amaya,"
"When did you have kids?" I asked in absolute shock.
"They were born almost two months ago. They're mine and Leah's miracle daughters. All these years Leah thought she was infertile. Then all of a sudden she got pregnant with twin girls. Non identical twin girls. They really are something those two. They can shift already,"
"Where are they? I want to meet them,"
"After the flight they wanted to stretch their legs and play so to speak. So I left them in the woods to play around on their own. Leah would have my head if she ever found out. She's extremely overprotective of our daughters,"
"Wait they're not with Leah?"
"No Leah left on a business trip to Washington D.C this morning,"
"So you left your baby girls, who are not even two months old yet, alone in the woods for hours?!" I was suddenly very furious. Didn't he learn from what happened when we left Nessie alone?!
"Yes but-"
"Jacob I think you need to go and find your girls. Right now. Did you not learn from what happened when we left Nessie alone?!"
Jacob left without saying a word. He returned an hour later with no babies and a face that was almost as white as mine. "I can't find them,"
"What do you mean you can't find them?"
"I can't find my girls. They're gone. I can't hear their thoughts either. I don't know what happened to them,"
"What do they look like? Edward and I will help you search,"
"Emma looks exactly as I do as a wolf. She has my reddish brown fur. Amaya looks exactly like Leah with her gray fur,"
We searched the woods the entire surrounding area in less then an hour. There was no trace of Jacob's daughters anywhere. As I was coming home I heard Jacob talking to someone.
"No Leah everything is fine. I swear. The girls are fast asleep. I promise I am fully capable of looking after our daughters on our own. Yeah, love you to. Bye,"
Jacob was sweating bullets. "Leah called,"
"and I assumed you told her exactly what happened?" Though judging from what I had just heard I was sure that was not the case.
"No," he admitted.
"and why not? They are her babies also. Don't you think she should know-"
"Absolutely not!" Jake yelled. "She is very overprotective of those two. I actually like having my head attached to my body. If she knows that they have gone missing because I left them alone for a few hours...oh God no. She will kill me, then find a way to ressurect me, then she will kill me a second time. No. Leah cannot, under any circumstances, find out about this,"
