The sun was rising over Chopper Base as I woke up in my room. I smiled, ready to start a new day in the rebellion. I got dressed and left the mask that Sabine had made for on my bed. Ever since Ezra and I had made up for what happened on Malachor, I avoided wearing it often than I used to do after I lost my eyesight. As I stepped out of my room after clipping my lightsaber to my belt, I sensed Ezra in the common room but there was fear rolling off his signature in the Force.
"Ezra? Are you okay?" I asked, clearly worried for him. I heard the boy shutter a little fright before speaking up.
"(SIGHS) It... It was a dream..."
Judging from his tone of voice, I knew it had to have been a bad one. I also knew that the last few days haven't been the best. Ever since we got back from Malachor after I lost my eyesight and Ahsoka was reported dead by Vader, Ezra hasn't been himself lately. "Bad?..." Ezra inhaled deeply before telling me his dream.
"It was about you... Maul showed up and he killed every one of you... Rex... Sato... Chopper... Hera... Zeb... Sabine... Even you, Kanan! And as you died... You said you hated me and said that were disappointed in me... You always were, Kanan!... (CRYING)"
With each passing word that came out of the kid, it broke my heart to see my padawan this broken until he started crying. I put a comforting hand on Ezra's back, doing my best to calm him down, like I used to do all the time when he was upset.
"Kid... We talked about this!... I know you feel bad... But what happened to me and Ahsoka, is not your fault!..."
The kid sighs deeply, wiping his tears away from his eyes. "I know...!"
I remembered when Rex joined the rebellion almost a year ago and how I couldn't forgive myself for what happened to my master... In reality, I guess I just didn't want to lose Ezra as well.
"For what it is worth... I know how you feel...!"
"What?..." Ezra stopped crying and rubbed his orange sleeve against his nose and his blue eyes, confused...
"Remember when Rex first joined the rebellion? And even though I trusted him, we could argue all time causing you to get caught in the crossfire? I guess I was so angry because... I blamed myself for what happened to my master, and I didn't want to lose you as well... So if anybody on Chopper Base who should understand what you're going through, it's me!... I can help you, Ezra. And the rest of our family can be there for you too, but not if you run away or shut me out!..."
Ezra bravely wipes away from cheek and then sighs. "Hey, just promise me one more thing, master?..."
"Anything, kiddo..."
"That you'll be patient with about dealing with my guilt over what happened on Malachor?..."
I smiled, knowing that it was a start, if it meant it would help the kid get over his guilt.
"Absolutely... I made you a promise to always be there for you when you needed me the most... That hasn't changed, and it never will... I promise!..."
Ezra smiles with tears of joy before wrapping his arms around me, hugging me while sighing with relief. I take a step back in shock but wrapped my arms around him while patting his back softly as Sabine enters the room
"Okay; Once again it is really cute when you two bond, but Hera has called a meeting for a recon mission on Lothal."
We both looked at each other confused, but not surprised that Hera called a meeting ever since we barely escaped from the factory on Lothal a few days ago. Thunder and lightning flashed over the base, as Hera discussed the plan for the mission.
"Even though we still have some preparation to do before we strike the Empire's factory on Lothal, I want to do a thorough econ trip to update our intel. There's no need for a full squadron. A small unit should be able to handle this. I'm assigning you the mission, Ezra."
I looked over to sense that Ezra was confused and dazed a bit.
"Ezra? Care to join the briefing?"
"Sorry. Yeah. No, it's just... I thought I saw something..."
"This is your mission, Ezra I need your full attention."
"Yeah. You've got it. Sorry."
"Alright. So first, you'll slip into the system and study the Empire's orbital defences. We'll keep our distance, but gather all data we can. I want destroyers, TIE patrol routes, transport schedules..."
Hera's voice of telling the battle plan faded into the background because my attention was more concerned about Ezra, who was gasping in fear a little. I knew that something was wrong. As I ignored Hera and the others, I walked over to Ezra and placed a hand on his shoulder, who gasped in fear a little.
"Something wrong?"
"No, I just... I thought I saw something or someone.
The way he said it wasn't very convincing for me, but I ignored it and stayed by Ezra's side just to be safe.
"The recon team leaves as soon as we're loaded up. Questions?
" Is Admiral Thrawn there?"
"We have reports of an increase in capital ships, but no confirmation as to whether he's there or not."
Before I could listen to her orders any further, I felt Ezra bump into me, causing me to feel off guard a little. Something was truly wrong that was making Ezra afraid this much.
"Ezra, what is it?"
He didn't hear me and ended up bumping into Zeb as I raised my hand to sense what was bothering him.
"Hey, kid. you feeling all right?"
"There! Look!"
Both me and Zeb look to where he is pointing, but there's nothing there.
"What am I looking at?"
Hera immediately stops the briefing, seeing our youngest member of our crew is looked a bit shaken up.
"You don't look very good."
Trust me, she didn't need to be a Jedi to figure that out, just as much as I didn't need my eyes to see that Ezra was scared. Reaching out with the Force, I placed a hand on Ezra's shoulder.
"Ezra, what do you see?"
Ezra's breathing slows down a bit, but then he turns around and sees something, which causes him to gasp in fear and collapse on the briefing table!
"Ezra!"
Both me and Zeb tied to wake Ezra up as Rex, Sabine, Sato, and Hera were just as worried as Zeb and I are right now.
"Kanan, what's going on?"
"I don't know. I don't know!"
"Ezra, can you hear me? Ezra!"
I knew that when Zeb calls Ezra by his name instead of "kid", then I should be worried.
"Let's take him to my room for now. Do you want me to carry him, boss?"
I realize he's talking to me, causing me to snap out of my panicked state I was in for Ezra's condition. I turn to him and Commander Sato.
"No, I've got him... Commander, could you please excuse us for a moment?"
"Okay..."
I scooped Ezra into my arms as we leave the briefing room. Inside Ezra's room, and set him on the lower bunker. I knelt down beside my student, rubbing his left arm to calm him down. The others were just as worried about the kid as I was.
"What do you think happened, Sabine?"
"Your guess is as good as mine, Zeb."
"What do you think, love?"
"(SIGHS) I wish I knew what was wrong, Hera. (STARTS TO TRY TO WAKE HIM UP AGAIN.) Ezra? Ezra, can you hear me?"
Then I heard Ezra mumbling. I knelt closer to him, trying to calm him down in case he was having another bad dream.
"Wake up."
Ezra woke up gasping as he jumped up with fear as I placed my hand on his knee and shoulder, to ease whatever might have frightened him.
"Whoa, Ezra. It's okay... You're safe..."
I felt Ezra calming down as Hera spoke up from behind me.
"You want to tell us what's going on?"
I stood up as Ezra sat up, trying to figure out what he saw back at the meeting.
"It was Maul."
Both Sabine and I looked at each other, wondering how that's possible when there was nobody there.
"You mean, at the briefing?"
"I saw him. He said my name. He was right behind me. I mean, he was right there.
"Kid, I was standing right next to you. There was nobody else there."
I knew that Zeb couldn't see him, but I did say before Maul blinded me, I did trust Ezra with my life. Even though she wasn't a Jedi, I knew that Hera believed him too as much as I did.
"Maybe it was some kind of Force vision."
To be honest, I wasn't sure if it was the Force at work or if Maul was just using their Force bond to scare Ezra.
"Mmm, maybe."
Zeb just sighed in confusion.
"If you ask me, the kid's just been working too hard."
He walks out as Chopper follows, commenting something about Ezra's naptime, which caused Hera to snap in defence for Ezra.
"Chopper, stop it!"
But Ezra ignored the tension he was feeling a few minutes ago and starts to get up.
"No. Chop's right. Naptime's over. I should get back to work."
"Ezra? You sure you're all right?"
"Hera, I feel fine. I just had a bad something... No reason to stop the rebellion, right? Come on, Sabine. We gotta get ready for our mission."
As Sabine and Ezra leave the room, something just didn't seem right with Ezra, knowing what he saw wasn't a trick. Hera placed a comforting hand on my shoulder.
"Tell me what you're thinking, Kanan."
"I'm thinking that whatever Ezra went through with Maul, it's not over yet."
I left the room, really needing some time to think about what just happened.
