Chapter Twenty-Three

One month later – January…

Fitz looked around at all the expending mothers and fathers in the waiting room. He never thought he would be in this position again. After Mellie leaving him with Mira, he kept his focus on raising his daughter and as much as he wanted to expand his family, he never thought it would be in his cards until he met Olivia. Now here he was with the love of his life waiting to see their new child.

He placed a kiss on Liv's forehead who was laying her head on his shoulder. She was having a rough morning due to morning sickness but she was still glowing and beautiful as always. When she felt his lips on her forehead, she looked up at him and smiled. When she was here last month she came alone wanting to give Fitz the surprise but she was extremely happy to have him today. They were finally going to see their baby.

"Olivia Pope"

The duo got up from their seats and followed the nurse. She got her weight taken and vitals checked before they were put in a room to wait for her doctor. Liv laid down on the exam table and Fitz took a seat right next to her. He placed a kiss on her hand and she smiled.

"I'm excited to see our little baby," he said.

"Me too. We'll be able to listen to the heartbeat."

A knock on the door stopped Fitz from responding to Olivia.

"Hello Olivia and I'm guessing this is the baby's father," Dr. Gomez said.

"Yes my name is Fitz Grant," he said, shaking her hand.

"Nice to meet you. So how are you feeling Liv?"

"Pretty good. Morning sickness isn't too bad. I am feeling more and more tired lately but I figure that's normal."

Dr. Gomez smiled, "yes that's all completely normal. Now how about we see your baby?"

Fitz and Olivia smiled at each other and shook their head yes. They were both waiting for this moment and Fitz grabbed her hand.

"Okay now let's see here," she moved the ultrasound wand around Olivia's stomach a bit before they were finally able to hear what they had been dying to hear.

Thump, thump, thump

"There it is. He or she is currently the size of a raspberry. Everything looks like it's right on track. Your due date is August 19. Of course he or she could come before or later."

"Fitz, that's our baby," she said looking at him with tears in her eyes.

"Our baby," he responded and placed a gentle kiss on her lips.

"Congratulations you two. You can set up your next appointment which will be in two months unless something comes up. Please keep an eye out for any spotting or unusual pain you feel. You're not completely out of the woods yet. But everything seems normal and you're healthy so I don't think you'll have any issues."

Dr. Gomez printed out a couple of ultrasound pictures and handed it to them.

"Do you guys have any questions before you go?"

They looked at each other and smiled.

"No I don't think we do Dr. Gomez. Thank you so much."

"You're welcome and congrats again. See you in two months" Dr. Gomez got up from her seat and left the two of them alone.

Fitz looked at the ultrasound pictures in awe. Even a month later he still couldn't believe that they were having a baby together.

"How are you feeling Fitz?" Liv asked.

"I'm overwhelmed in the best way. I can't wait for us to tell Mira," he smiled at her.

"I hope she'll be excited. This is another big change in her life and I don't want her to think that just because I'm having a baby that I'll push her aside."

"I don't think she will think that baby. We just have to make sure we reassure her and she's always wanted a sibling."

She smiled and gave him a kiss. They were planning on telling her tonight and Olivia couldn't help but be nervous.

"Ready to go?"

"Yeah, let's go home to our girl," Liv said. They walked to the front desk to schedule the next appointment. They left feeling giddy and couldn't stop staring at the ultrasound of the new life that they will be holding in seven months.

"Anyone home?" Fitz asked when they walked through the door. They could hear the pitter patter of Mira's little feet coming from the kitchen. Katherine had come over to watch Mira while they went to the doctors. Katherine was the only one who knew that Olivia was pregnant but they were all ready to share the news.

"Mommy! Daddy! We made cookies!" Mira said when she ran into Fitz's legs. She grabbed both of their hands and lead them into the kitchen where Katherine was waiting.

"Hey you two. How did it go?" she said giving them a knowing smile. They smiled at her.

"It went really well. Doctor said everything looks great," Liv responded.

"I can't wait to hear more about it later. Now I have to go. Charlie has been needing my help fixing the nursery. She is getting closer to her due date so she is getting really restless."

"She has about a week left right?" Fitz asked.

"Yes but if we are being honest her baby is coming sooner rather than later."

And in that moment Katherine's phone rang.

"Hi Alex. What?! Oh my god! I'm on my way," she hung up the phone and looked at Fitz and Olivia.

"Seems like my intuitions were correct. Charlie and Alex are on their way to the hospital! You're about to get a little cousin Mira!"

Mira jumped up and down in excitement. Fitz and Liv gave Katherine a quick hug and Katherine rushed out the door. This day was filled with excitement in so many ways. One baby was being born and another was on its way.

Later that night Mira was watching tv in the living room when Fitz and Olivia decided that it was time to tell her the good news. Liv had created a basket full of her favorite things from her favorite candy to snacks but the main two gifts were a teddy bear that was wearing a shirt that said Big Sister and a matching t-shirt for Mira to wear that said the same thing.

"You ready to tell her?" Fitz asked.

"Yes but I'm still a little nervous."

Fitz wrapped his arms around her waist and put his head on her shoulder. He placed a couple of kisses on her neck.

"It will all go well. Come on, let's go surprise our little girl."

They walked into the living room and clearly Mira was engrossed in her movie that she didn't hear when her parents walked in the room.

"Mira baby can you pause the movie please? We have a surprise for you," Fitz asked.

"Surprise?! I like surprises!" she said and she quickly paused the movie.

Olivia pulled the basket from behind her back.

"This surprise," she said as she sat down and gave her the basket.

"Oh wow. It's all my favorite stuff. A TEDDY BEAR!"

She pulled out the bear and squeezed it real tight. Liv and Fitz smiled at her excitement.

"Look at the shirt the bear is wearing lovebug."

Mira looked at him confused but proceeded to look at the shirt. She was quietly sounding out the words trying to read them. When she put it all together, her eyes went wide.

"BIG SISTER?!"

"Yeah big sister. You're going to be a big sister sweet pea. How do you feel about that?" Liv asked.

"I'm so happy! But are you still going to be my mommy?" she looked at her with her big doe eyes.

"Baby of course I am. Come here," she opened up her arms and Mira went straight to them.

"You will always be my little girl no matter how many babies I have," she said and placed two gentle kisses on her head.

"Okay. I love you mommy and daddy."

"We love you too," Fitz said and put his arms around his girls. His family has expanded in ways he couldn't even imagine. He looked up and closed his eyes. He hoped his dad was looking down at him proudly.

Three days later the Pope-Grant clan was at Charlie and Alex's house to meet the newest addition to the family. Olivia and Fitz were even planning on telling them about the new baby.

"Mommy how big is my cousin?"

"Well she's very tiny but that's how babies are. They are tiny but then they grow just like you did."

"Daddy was I very tiny?"

Fitz looked in the rearview mirror and said, "You were! I remember when you were born I never wanted to put you down."

"But now I'm big!"

"You are big and you'll be a great big sister to your brother or sister."

"I can't wait," she said with a big smile on her face.

They pulled into the driveway of Charlie's home and Mira grabbed the gift while Olivia grabbed the flowers.

They knocked on the door and Katherine opened the door with a smile on her face.

"Hey guys. Come on in. They are in the living room."

"Hi Grammy! I'm ready to see the baby," Mira said excitingly.

"Hey baby. Now you have to be a little quiet because she is sleeping."

"Okay. Shh…" she put her finger over her mouth.

"Hey mom," Fitz gave her a hug followed by Olivia. The trio made their way to the living room to find Charlie, Alex, and their baby.

"Hey guys. How are you?" Liv asked.

"Tired but a good kind of tired. Do you want to meet your new niece?" Charlie said.

"Of course. What did you guys decide to name her?"

Charlie got the baby from the bassinet and handed her to Liv who sat down on the couch across from them.

"Well meet Elizabeth Grace Baker," she smiled as she placed the baby in her arms.

"She's beautiful. She looks just like you Alex."

"You think so? I think she looks like her beautiful mother," he said looking lovingly at Charlie.

"You guys are just adorable. Mira come meet your baby cousin."

Mira made her way to Olivia and sat next to her. She gently moved one finger on the baby's face. Fitz looked at his girls and he pictured the day when Olivia gave birth to their own baby. His heart was full.

"Congrats baby sis. I'm really happy for you," he said and gave her a hug.

"Thanks big brother. I can't believe she's really mine," she looked up at him with tears in her eyes.

"Believe it. You're going to be a great mom to her."

"Thank you."

"Aunt Charlie, we brought you a gift," Mira said snapping Fitz and Charlie out of their moment.

"You did?! Let me open it right now."

Charlie went through all the tissue paper and inside the bag was some socks, tiny hats, and two little onesies for the baby. She took a good look and saw that one of the onesies said Big Cousin which caused her to do a double take before she looked at Fitz and Olivia who had big smiles on their faces.

"Wait…are you…"

"I'm pregnant!"

"Oh my god this is amazing! Congratulations you guys!" Charlie's eyes started to water.

"Oh god don't cry. My hormones have been all over the place so if you cry, I cry," Liv said as her own eyes started to water.

"Well too bad because I'm already crying. Come here."

Liv handed baby Elizabeth to Alex who said his own congrats before she went to Charlie's arms. The two of them started crying which in turn started to make Fitz cry. Mellie didn't have this excitement when she was pregnant and Charlie hated her so it was refreshing for him to see the love of his life and baby sister getting along.

"Mom did you know?" Charlie asked when she let go of Olivia.

"Of course I did! I figured it out at Christmas dinner just like I figured out when you were pregnant," Katherine said with a smile.

"Moms always know, don't they?"

"Yes they do and you'll get there as your children get older."

"Let me just enjoy my little girl while she is still a baby," Charlie said.

"As you should. They grow up so fast," Katherine said lovingly.

"It's during these times that I wish daddy were here. Don't you mom?," Fitz said.

"Of course I do. There are so many moments in which we discussed grandkids and growing old together but I have faith that he is watching over us. He is just as happy as I am that our kids are happy and in love. That's all we ever wanted for you two."

Charlie and Fitz smiled at their mother's words. There are times where Fitz really missed his father but he liked to think that his father was sending him signs and was proud of what he has done with his life just like his mom said. He looked over at his girls who were having their own little moment and he couldn't wait to make Olivia an official Grant. He just needed to talk to his mother about that family ring.
