A Circus Boy Returns Home
Part 12: Welcoming Timoti Home
A few days brought relief, the fever finally broken, and a hungry baby bird who was well rested and ready to start the day. Tim woke and saw Dick sitting in a chair with his eyes closed.
"Dick?"
Dick came awake to see his baby brother was now awake. "Hey, you really gave me a scare there, baby bird."
"I . . . I didn't expect to get sick."
"Sleeping in a car can do that," Dick replied. "Why didn't you come to the wagon?"
"I didn't know where it was, and well, you were mad at me. Then you put me to work with the roustabouts, and I didn't think you wanted me around. Then I got heat stroke, and I lost my wedding ring."
"Oh, Timmy, I'm sorry," Dick said with sincerity. "I didn't mean to be so harsh. I wanted you to stay safe. After what happened; then CPS taking you, and the courtroom . . . "
"But you won the case."
"I know, then Bruce sent you on a mission that almost went array."
"He couldn't send anyone else," Tim said.
Dick sighed. "I know I'm acting irrational, but I don't want to lose you. I never expected to have my actual living, breathing brother back in my life."
"I've been in your life since I was 13."
"And I know that, too. It's getting used to the fact that you're my actual brother, and you've got a family. You've got to be careful with your life. Your children want to get to know you."
"Speaking of family," Tim said. "What are you going to do about Bab's."
"Well, I'm sure things are all right," though Dick's words didn't sound convincing since he did try to call Babs, but she hadn't answered her phone. Then the morning breakfast gong sound could be heard throughout the circus and carnival midway, and the person listening in quickly left.
"Hey, that's breakfast," Dick said. "You did say you were hungry."
"Yeah."
"Come on, I'll introduce you to everyone."
"I probably could use a shower," Tim said.
"How about I meet you at the cafeteria tent after you shower."
"Okay," Tim got up from the bunk. His legs were still shaky, but he managed to keep from falling over. Dick had pulled out a robe, towels, and a pair of slippers from a cubby and placed them on the chair, then he left for the cafeteria tent. There was an insignia on the robe that Tim didn't recognize. Even so, it was a nice robe. Tim stripped down and placed the slippers on his feet, and then wrapped the robe around him. It was too big, but it was warm and soft. On a small shelf he found shampoo and soap. He grabbed those as well as the towels. Tim then went to find the showers. They were lucky since this particular area had outdoor showers that could be used by people camping for the fairgrounds. There were a couple of people already lined up. Tim waited, and it wasn't long before he got a stall. He showered and washed his hair, then headed back to the wagon and dressed. He felt more refreshed and headed to the cafeteria tent. The roustabout spotted him and came over to him.
"I thought you left. You're late, you're supposed to eat before anyone else and get to work."
Tim was about to say something when Dick came up to him.
"Come on little brother, let's get you introduced."
"Grayson, I thought you didn't know this kid," the roustabout stated.
"He's my long-lost brother, Timoti," Dick said. "And you will treat him with respect."
The roustabout's eyes went wide. "You mean it's true?"
"I hope you haven't been mistreating him."
"No, sir."
"Come on Timoti, let's get you some breakfast. You can sit with me and the rest of the performers."
Tim followed Dick over to the line for breakfast, grabbing a few items of breakfast foods.
"You need to keep up your strength," Dick said, and he quickly added a couple more items for his brother's plate.
"I can't possibly eat all of that," Tim pointed out.
"What I have planned, you'll soon work it off."
Tim did his best to eat down the food and while he was eating, Dick was boasting to everyone who Tim was.
"We need to celebrate," someone said. "I remember the Flying Graysons. It was a sad day when their second newly born son disappeared without a trace."
"And to think they didn't want the police called in."
"Poor Dickie was so beside himself with worry."
"He's grown so much. I can hardly believe it. He looks like John, while Dick looks more like his mother."
"See, Timoti, they remember you," Dick said.
Tim smiled despite the fact that his mouth was full of food. While everyone was excited, two figures stood in the back. One whispered to the other. Then the taller of the two left the cafeteria tent in a hurry.
