Chapter Two

L's pov.

L had made accidental contact with Tsuki, the eighteen-year-old daughter of Deputy Director Koreyoshi Kitamura. Watari met her first in a chance encounter in which she appeared frightened and under duress. He reported that she said she thought someone was following her.

Raye Pember had been investigating her for several weeks... but he had already finished his investigation so he shouldn't have been tailing her. In his notes about Tsuki Kitamura, he described her as withdrawn, rarely leaving the house. She appeared to have an older boyfriend but ceased contact on Wednesday of two weeks ago, fleeing the coffeeshop in which Watari and L currently sat in.

Anti-social, withdrawn, propensity to have relations with slightly older men and perhaps paranoid.

He stared intently at Tsuki, taking in her features analytically. Her eyes were a startling shade of blue. Almost cerulean. Up close, she was much smaller than he had imagined, though truthfully he had never spent much time in the close company of women. She held a steaming styrofoam to-go cup in one hand, pausing like a deer in the headlights when she saw him.

Her hair was such a pale shade of blonde that it appeared white and silvery under the soft yellow lights of the shop. A red hair tie secured her thick braid. A few stray tendrils of hair fell softly against her pale cheeks. Her body language indicated unease.

"Hello," she said, holding her arm awkwardly across her chest and fiddling with an enamel pin on the lapel of her jacket, a flash of red and he noted that it was an apple. "I'm Tsuki."

"Hello." L greeted in return, choosing not to lower his gaze from hers. He did not care to give her his alias.

She broke eye contact, shifting her eyes to Watari. They softened and her posture relaxed slightly.

"I was just wanting to say good bye, Watari. It was very nice meeting you." She forced a smile at Watari.

"It was a pleasure to meet you as well, Tsuki. Take care." Watari smiled at her.

She turned her attention back towards him and gave him a weak smile as well, forced but polite. It seemed that she did not enjoy socializing or interacting much.

L watched her as she left the shop, pausing in the doorway. A tall man with sleek brown hair and dark eyes stood in front of her, water dripping from his umbrella as it had began raining while she was in the shop.

L narrowed his eyes as she flinched away from the man, his hand out stretched towards her beckoningly but there was a hint of malice in his smile and anger in his eyes. He shoved past her, causing her to stumble.

This must be Tokimaru.

From what he could dechipher from Raye Pember's notes... Tokimaru was not pleased with their breakup and had been harassing Tsuki ever since.

A week had passed and it was now Decemeber 7th. The deaths of Raye Pember and the other FBI agents had been discovered. This was more than troubling... the last two familes that Raye Pember had been investigating were Chief Yagami's and Deputy Director Kitamura's.

Light Yagami was under the greatest suspicion, but Tsuki Kitamura was also a strong possibility. She certainly possessed the type of antisocial attitude and tendencies that one would expect from a mass murder such as Kira.

Watari's voice floated through the intercom, "L, you have a call coming in from the director of the FBI."

L stood motionless as the gruff male voice of the FBI Director came over the line, already knowing what he was calling to say. Not that he blamed him in any capacity. Twelve good agents were dead.

"It's me. I've got a report in front of me right now stating that all of our agents in Japan are dead. All twelve died of heart attacks. I can only assume that Kira is behind this... look," he paused to take a deep breath, "I'm sorry but... we're calling off the investigation."

The line went dead and before L could move, the line buzzed.

"I have Chief Yagami on the line." He stated before connecting them.

"L, I just got off the phone with the director of the FBI. According to him you arranged for the FBI to come to Japan and investigate everyone here that is associated with the task force!"

"Yes, I did." He answered evenly, his voice mild. He knew something along these lines would happen if the task force were to ever become aware that they were being investigated.

"So how do you explain this..." Chief Yagami challenged, the thinly veiled anger towards him threatening to burst forth, "Are we now suspects in our own investigation?"

"I felt that it was necessary in order to uncover Kira's identity."

"I cannot accept that," he shouted, "I find it unacceptable that you should spy on us- the very people working with you on this case!"

L clenched his jaw slightly, listening to the whispers of the other police in the room.

"You hear that? I knew all along we couldn't trust that guy."

"More importantly Kira killed those FBI agents... didn't he?"

"So much for his sense of justice... he's a murder."

The line beeped again, "We have another victim, a note was found at the scene."

L turned towards the computer at the sound of Watari's statement, he truthfully hadn't expected another note so soon.

His screen displayed a photograph of a piece of lined notebook paper, the words across the page were hastily scrawled but clear. It read:

Love apples.

"Damn you, Kira..." L growled under his breath, narrowing his eyes at the screen as if he would discern the answer simply if he stared hard enough.

L, did you know?

Gods of death

Love apples.

A flash of red. The red enamel pin on the jacket of Tsuki Kitamura... one could dismiss this as coincidence, but the fact that she was under suspicion and that she just so happened to be wearing the apple pin made him uncomfortable with dismissing it all together.

Gods of death. Was that a reference to Kira him- or her- self or could they actually mean... a shinigami?

L shut his eyes and rubbed them for a moment, his mind wandering briefly wondering why or if Kira would kill a series of criminals simply to tell him that that he loved apples.

I'm sorry this is such a short chapter! I haven't had the time to write. I wrote this from L's point of view, so I'm going to do another chapter really soon getting back to Tsuki. I don't like head hopping within the same chapter. :)
