DM When A Sibling Is Very Ill Chapter 3

One day at school, Edith's class teacher Miss Brown had something to tell the whole class. ''As most of you are aware'' she said, ''our school's spring fair is coming up soon. Have you all remembered to bring something for each of the stall?''.

The children had and even Edith remembered to bring something with her. ''A dried up mud pie?'' asked Miss Brown in surprise. ''Yes'' said Edith, ''that's why I don't want it anymore''.

Then Toby, one of the big boys in the class came into the room. He was carrying a large box with one of the biggest Easter egg made up of white chocolate that Edith had ever seen!

''Splendid!'' said Miss Brown, ''that's almost too good for any of the stalls''. ''It ought to be a prize Miss'' said Toby, ''We could have a competition where you have to guess the weight of the egg and whoever's closet wins said egg''.

''That's a wonderful idea Toby'' said Miss Brown. ''The Spring Fair isn't for a couple of days so you've all got plenty of time to make your guesses of the weight of the egg''.

Later at break time, Edith and her friends talked about the giant white chocolate Easter egg. ''It'll last for months!'' said Cora, ''I'd eat it in a couple of weeks''. ''It might go mouldy and out of date by then'' said Eveleigh, ''It would be better to eat it in one week''. ''Or'' said Edith, ''Guzzle it up within seconds!''.

Her friends stared at her in disbelief. ''But won't you be sick?'' asked Cora. ''Not if I'm careful'' replied Edith with a rather confident look on her face. After school she couldn't stop thinking about the giant white chocolate egg. White chocolate was Edith's favourite sort of chocolate and a whole giant egg load of it was bound to last her for at least a couple of days.

When Edith and Agnes got home, Dru was waiting to take them to do some shopping. Suddenly Edith had a brainwave. If she could find a set of weighing scales that Gru used for cooking sometimes, she could use it to weigh the egg before the competition and find out the exact answer to how much it weighed.

The moment Edith got into the house, she headed straight into the kitchen to look for the weighing scales which didn't take her very long to find them. Then she realized that better still, maybe there was some more of those giant Easter eggs being sold in the big superstore close to the big black house where the Gru family lived.

Edith made sure she also took a piece of paper and a pencil so she could write down the answer of how much the giant eggs weighed.

As she and Agnes trudged around the superstore with Dru, Edith saw that she was in luck for there was indeed some giant chocolate Easter eggs for sale.

Quickly when Dru and Agnes weren't looking, Edith pulled out the weighing scales from under her sweater and placed one of the giant eggs on it and scribbled the down the results on the piece of paper she'd brought along.

Then she stuffed the weighing scales back under her sweater and placed the pencil and paper back inside her pink hat. Then she hurried after her uncle and little sister.

On the day when of the school spring fair which the competition of the giant white chocolate Easter egg was to take place during, Edith handed in the piece of paper with the weight of the egg written on it to Miss Brown and went to join the rest of her class for the spring fair.

Edith liked throwing wet sponges at the teachers best of all. Soon it was time for the competition of the giant white chocolate egg. Miss Brown announced, ''And the winner is Edith Gru!''.

As everyone clapped and cheered, Edith took the giant egg feeling very pleased with herself for weighing the giant egg in the superstore otherwise she would never have won.

''I did it!'' she thought happily. That evening, Edith showed her white chocolate egg to Agnes. ''Look what I won at the fair Agnes!'' she said, ''Do you want half of it?''. ''Yes please!'' said Agnes,

''Thank you Edith! You're the best big sister after Margo!''. ''Thanks Agnes'' said Edith as the two of them sat munching away at their half of the white chocolate egg, ''But It's not the same without her!''. ''No'' Agnes agreed.

A few days passed. Margo had been in hospital for such a long time that by now she was getting used to all the treatment and medicines and resting. Margo didn't have time to feel board at any time cos often Lucy would read her stories to pass the time or there were toys in the hospital playroom that Margo could play with on days she felt well enough.

Then one night all was quiet and peaceful in all the hospital wards, but Lucy was woken up by the sound of someone crying. She got out of bed and went to inspect, it didn't take her long to find out where it was coming from.

Lucy found Margo lying there in bed, softly sobbing into her pillow. ''Margo?'' she whispered quietly so as not to wake anyone else up, ''Are you all right?''.

''Mom'' wept Margo, ''I miss everyone back at home''. ''Come into my bed for a cuddle'' Lucy whispered. She picked up Margo and carried her daughter to her bed. Lucy lay Margo on the mattress of her bed, got in next to her and pulled the covers over both of them.

She pulled Margo close to her. They stayed like that as Margo sobbed into Lucy's chest. "Shush Don't worry, my baby" Lucy said soothingly, "Mommy's here, my little baby daughter". Minutes seemed to drift by as Margo continued to sob, unable to stop herself.

Lucy continued to squeeze her daughter until the heaving sobs turned to soft sniffles. ''It looks like you're feeling homesick'' she said, wiping the tears away from Margo's streaked checks. Margo nodded quietly.

''You are so brave my baby'' Lucy added, stroking Margo's hair, ''to handle all this chemotherapy without a fuss and I'll always be by your side, ok?''.

Margo blinked, smiled and rested her head back onto Lucy's chest. Her mom's warmth made her forget about how much it hurt to miss the rest of the family back at home. She wanted to stay like this forever. ''Sleep tight Margo'' said Lucy as she kissed her daughter's forehead, ''Hope you feel better soon''.

But Margo was already fast asleep. Her pale skin contrasted with her dark brown hair. Her eyelashes rested against freckled cheeks, and Lucy's heart swelled. Margo looked like an angel and Lucy decided not to wake her and send her back to her own hospital bed.
