Now that Colonel O'Neill was assured that the gene manipulating machine would be destroyed he told the rest of SG-1 to get ready to leave the planet. The only task left was to restore the few remaining people to their original state. One of them, Eggar, sought out Major Carter to speak to her in private.
Jack assumed they were discussing something technical about the machine. He and Jonas went about locating the bodies of the Russian soldiers who had been killed in order to return them to their people.
O'Neill was brooding, not only because of the needless loss of life but the fact that he had made such a rookie mistake. Nirriti was dead so it didn't matter. It wouldn't cause any major problems but...
He let her, a Goa'uld, know Carter was special, important not only to the SGC but important to him. Not once but twice, he was impotent when Nirriti had a weapon to the head of an unconscious Carter and again when he offered himself to Nirriti to heal Carter. It made Carter vulnerable and him as well. He knew better – never let your guard down, never expose a weakness. Carter was his Achilles heel.
To get her attention Eggar reached out to touch Majors Carter's arm. She could not suppress the shiver that ran through her.
Sam was distracted by the colonel. Although he could have assigned this task to another he felt obliged to do this himself. These men, Russian or not, died under his command and he was responsible. So when Eggar touched her arm she started.
Eggar said "I know what you see when you look at us. Yes, the god Nirrti has given us great powers but she also gave us the false promise to heal us. We are grotesque, hideous monsters in your eyes."
"No, no..."
"Please, Major Carter could you assist us?" Wodan asked.
Eggar said "I am afraid that if I am healed by the machine I will not remember how to heal the others. I need to show them, too, it is possible."
"Show me, I'd be glad to help you and your people." she said.
Carter was quite curious and wanted to learn to operate the machine and maybe find out some of its secrets.
"He," Eggar pointed his chin in Colonel O'Neill's direction "when Nirriti brought him here" Eggar pointed in the direction of the machine. "He offered to let Nirrti do anything to him, anything, to save you. You should know this. Look at us, know what he offered Nirrti. You know what happened to Wodan's brother and Colonel Evanov."
Eggar could tell from her expression Sam questioned what he was saying.
"Your Colonel O'Neill told me to read Nirrti's thoughts but I had to see into his mind to see if he was attempting to deceive me before I dare look into the mind of a god.
For you he would let her destroy him. For you he would give up his body, his mind, his life. Do you understand? He would allow himself to be repulsive to you if it meant you would be healed and be safe. He knew what Nirrti was capable of."
Wodan said "Nirrti said she could do anything she wanted."
"Yes," Eggar continued, "she meant to hurt him, find all the secrets within him and destroy him. It is when I looked into her mind and saw her deceit and treachery. She used us for her own curiosity and would leave us to die when she was done."
"Eggar told me she killed my brother Alebran, that is when I killed her. I killed the God Nirrti." Wodan said. "O'Neill tried to stop me. He was angry and afraid that with Nirrti dead your death would be inevitable. No one else would have done what he offered to do for you."
"You brother Alebran did. He risked everything to come to Earth to ask us to help you. He died doing just that." Carter said hopefully bring a measure of peace to these men. She took to heart what they had told her.
