620 Momento
O'Neill felt like a fifth wheel, maybe Carter would be valuable to this shakedown cruise but not the rest of SG-1. At best he was bored, at worst he was underfoot and in Ronson's way. But he had been ordered on this mission by General Hammond and General Greer so here he was.
Ronson saw SG-1 as unnecessary at best and a total pain in the ass most of the time. He saw them interfering with the command structure and smooth operation of his ship. He did not need a babysitter. And what could O'Neill do if the ship had problems - he was neither proficient in repairing engines, hull or weapon systems. O'Neill's second, however, might be an asset.
Ronson was aware O'Neill understood the chain of command and had been put in this untenable position by the brass so they'd make the best of it even as it irked him.
Then the shit hit the fan.
O'Neill was angry, this ship was blighted. It was nothing but trouble, first the hijacking before it was finished and now crapping out mid flight many light years from home. The thing needed a spare buffer for the Naquadria reactor like a car with a flat needed a spare tire. It was the one thing they didn't have located in the Redundancy Department of Redundancy.
Carter and Jonas came up with a bright idea. Some bright idea - it crippled the ship and caused them to be attacked but at least got them to a planet that should have a Stargate. On their arrival in the orbit of Tagrea the Naquadria reactor was jettisoned and its explosion sent out a massive EM pulse affecting the ship and the city below. The people below believed they were under attack and immediately responded by launching ballistic missiles.
If O'Neill looked at it from their perspective he understood why they felt threatened. What would we do if a spaceship of unknown origins arrived in Earth's orbit, caused a massive explosion that in turn caused a massive EM pulse and then requested to land. We'd try to blow it out of the sky. So these people were a little skeptical and maybe a tad militaristic. They were afraid of a civilization that was technically superior and arriving with unknown intentions. They didn't trust us. This Jack understood, he did not trust easily.
But Prometheus was in trouble and they needed to land. O'Neill made a plea to their leaders and there was a truce of sorts.
It seemed the nation of Tagrea had gone through a "dark" age. Their people didn't not speak of the troubles or the incivility or the down right barbarity. In fact the history before the last three hundred years was deemed so awful it had been obliterated. Only a very few had mere glimpses of the time which had been shrouded in mystery. All that seemed to remain were a few artifacts and the name of the ancient god - Horus, known to Teal'c as the Goa'uld Heru'ur.
With a bit of luck, ancient artifacts and the discernment of Jonas Quinn and Teal'c the location of the Stargate was estimated and digging commenced. The coverstones were found and removed and the Stargate, their only way back to Earth, was erected.
Kalfas, the commander of the Tagrean security forces, saw the Stargate as a threat to the security of their planet. He distrusted the intentions of these visitors fearing they were a vanguard of an invasion force. This led to a standoff between him and the chief executive, Chairman Ashwan, who wished for a peaceful alliance with the men from Earth.
Peace ensued and the repairs to the Prometheus could proceed. The entire Naquadria reactor module needed to be replaced. Not only did the buffer need to be recreated but there was a question of sufficient Naquadria. It would take months. Major Carter left for Earth to begin the process, organizing the scientists and technicians.
A diplomatic unit was sent to Tagrea to establish a treaty between the two worlds and promote trade. Jonas Quinn and Teal'c remained for a short time to provide whatever information they could about the Goa'uld, Heru'ur in particular and the state of galactic affairs.
Colonel Ronson sent sections of his crew back to Earth for shore leave, while continuing drills with the remaining crew.
Colonel O'Neill flitted around getting under Ronson's feet, giving his opinion, to all who would listen, of the assorted races that populated the galaxy and escorting Carter to ensure she was provided all she desired. All in all he was bored and begged Hammond to allow SG-1 to get back to work.
When the Prometheus was finally deemed space worthy and again had a complete crew they proceeded to Earth by way of short hops from planet to planet, but only those that had Stargates. Ronson was irritated but Hammond was insistent. O'Neill was relieved, SG-1 was back on Earth and Jack and his team were preparing for a mission to P4S-237.
