Episode 11
No One's Slick as Gaston
Before the Curse
Belle sat on Rumple's dining room table. She smiled sweetly as him as they talked and gotten to know one another. After a while, Rumple heard a knock on the door.
"Excuse me." Rumple said as he walked toward the door. As he approached the door, it opened up to reveal an angry prince at the steps.
"I am Sir Gaston!" He said proudly, with his blue eyes ablaze. He ran his gloved fingers through his black hair. He held out a sword bravely. "And you sir, haven stolen-"
Before he could finish his speech, Rumple snapped his fingers. A violet mist engulfed Gaston and turned him into a rose. The red flower sat by the door, unmoving. Rumple picked it up and walked back into his home.
"Who was that?" Belle asked.
"Oh, just some merchant selling flowers." Rumple replied. "Here," He handed her the rose.
"Oh, thank you!" She smiled.
"So," Rumple said. "Why did you decide to leave your home?"
"Well…" Belle said. "I've always wanted to travel, see the world, and be a hero. I thought I would never get the chance. But when you came along, I knew that was my chance."
"I see, and what of your… betrothed?" Rumple asked.
"Gaston?" Belle asked. "Well, it was an arranged marriage, but I never really cared much about him."
"So, you wanted to come work for me so you could save your family." Rumple said. "Become a hero. So, have your dreams come true?"
"Well…" Belle thought for a moment. "No, I don't think I'll ever see the world now…"
They sat in silence for a long time. "Well, enough about me," Belle said. "Tell me more about you."
"Me?" Rumple said. "There's not much to tell…What would you like to know?"
"Hm…" Belle thought again. "I've noticed while I was cleaning a room, there were a lot of clothes…for a child… was it yours…or…was there…a child?"
"There was a child." Rumple said. "But I lost him…"
"How?" Belle asked.
"Well…" Rumple hesitated. "You know, I'm running out of straw. Why don't you go into town, and get some knew straw? When you come back, I'll tell you a story."
"Really?" Belle asked. "Just like that?"
"Of course," Rumple replied.
"You trust that I'll come back?"
"Well," Rumple said. "I don't expect I'll ever see you again."

"Now what?" Regina asked, walking up to the car that was packed full of sleeping bags, food, hiking supplies, a cooler and hot chocolate.
"Oh, hi Regina!" Anna said, shoving a pillow into the trunk of Frodo's car. "Don't mind us, we're just packing for a camping trip!"
"In this weather?!" Regina retorted. "Where is the Mayor?!"
Frodo was already walking up to her. "Do you need something, Miss Mills?"
"What is going on?" Regina asked. "There are tensions in the town, and they're all blaming me for the snow? Why is everyone always blaming the evil queen?"
"Well…" Frodo said. "You did send all of us to this place. Now that the curse is broken, what else can you do?"
"You don't think I'm behind this, do you?" Regina asked.
"No," Frodo said. "Anna has a lead."
"A lead?"
"My sister has magical powers," Anna said. "She can make things freeze…but it seems like she doesn't know how to control her powers."
"Who is your sister?" Regina asked.
"Her name is Elsa," Anna said. "We're going to find her, and see if she can bring back summer."
"Who's we?" Regina asked.
"Anna, Emma, Ruby, and I," Frodo said.
"Who's taking care of Henry?" Regina asked quickly.
"His grandparents," Frodo said.
"Why are you going?" Regina asked.
"Because I want to help," Frodo replied.
"If you leave, what will happen to me?"
"Don't worry, I'm leaving David in charge."
"And what if the town tries to defeat me?"
"May I suggest going into hiding?" Emma asked, walking up to them. "Like you have before?"
"Are you calling me a coward?" Regina asked.
"Regina, we are going to bring back summer, and everything will be fine." Frodo said.
Regina turned back to him. "As long as we are in this world," She said. "Nothing will be fine." She turned and stormed off.
Before the Curse
Belle decided to walk through the market to find a new book. She heard a new book was published. Once she had purchased it, she made her way home, walking through the streets. She was one of the more talented people who could walk and read at the same time. One of the knights saw her and recognized her as the princess. He followed her through the street until he finally caught up and stood in front of her.
"Hello Belle," He said.
"Bonjor, Gaston," Belle said before Gaston snatched the book from her hands. "Gaston, may I have my book please?" She reached out to take it back, but he pulled away from her and flipped through the pages.
"How can you read this, there's no pictures?" He asked.
"Well, some people use their imagination." Belle replied, trying to be patient.
"Belle, it's about time you get your head out of those books, and paying attention to more important things," He tossed her book into the mud. "Like me?" He winked at her. A few other girls noticed and sighed, smiling lustfully at him. "The whole town's talking about it." Gaston continued. "It's not right for a woman to read. Soon she's starts getting ideas…thinking…"
Belle picked up her book and wiped off the mud with a cloth. "Gaston, you are positively primeval."
"Why thank you Belle," Gaston smiled. "What do you say we go to the tavern and take a look at my trophies?" He threw an arm around her shoulders and led her along.
"Maybe some other time," Belle said. He seemed to ignore her. She ripped away from him. "Please, Gaston, I can't…I have to get back to help my father… goodbye…"
Lafu, a friend of Gaston's walked up and laughed. "That crazy old loon, he needs all the help he can get!" Gaston laughed.
"Don't talk about my father that way!" Belle snapped, placing her hands on her hips.
"Yeah, don't talk about her father that way!" Gaston said, smacking Lafu in the head.
"My father's not crazy!" Belle continued. "He's a genius!"
"All right," Gaston held his hands up in defense. "I'm sorry Belle,"
"Thank you," Belle said. She turned, heading out of town toward the field. The castle was just across it. The field lay next to a forest.
"Belle, watch out!" Gaston shouted as he drew his sword.
An ogre was running through the field, heading straight toward her. Belle quickly clamped a hand over her mouth, so she wouldn't scream. She had read about ogres, knowing they were blind, but they could hear and smell very well. Gaston jumped forward, shouting and drawing his sword.
"No, Gaston, he'll hear you!" Belle gasped. Gaston yelled even louder, drawing the ogre's attention away from Belle. This ogre was smaller than usual, but still mean and fierce. Gaston dodged as the ogre swung a fist. He jumped and stabbed it in the heart. The creature shrieked and fell to the ground.
Belle looked at him in stunned silence. "You saved my life…" Belle said. "Thank you."
Story Brooke
Regina walked into Mr. Gold's pawn shop. She looked around curiously at the merchandise until she finally came across the old flowers. She examined each of the drying flowers on display, and finally came across a rose. It was still soft and red. She carefully picked it up and set it on the floor. She snapped her fingers and a violet mist arose. Out of the mist appeared a man in a nice uniform. He carried a sword in his hand. He gasped and dropped his sword as if he had been frozen for years and had just barely thawed.
He looked up at Regina. "Who are you?" He asked.
"I am the person who just saved your life." Regina said. "I am the one who brought you back to human form."
"Then I suppose I am in your debt…" The knight mused.
"Yes," Regina said.
"What can I do?" The knight asked.
"First, tell me if you remember your name." Regina said.
"I am Sir Gaston," The knight replied.
"Good," Regina smiled. "Then I suppose you're looking for Belle."
"Yes," Gaston said.
"You can find her in this town." Regina said. She waved her hand and a violet mist crept into his ear. "I'm giving you knowledge of the town, and how it came to be. If you are to find Belle, make sure your enemy is also destroyed. That's all I ask of you."
"Very well," Gaston said, running his fingers though his hair. "You have my word." He strolled confidently out of the shop and into the street.
Before the Curse
Belle was reading her new book when a maid came to escort her to the throne room. Her father sat in his throne while Sir Gaston stood boldly and smiled at her.
"Father," She said.
"Belle," Maurice stood from his throne and walked toward his daughter. "I am pleased to tell you, that I have finally found you a suitor."
"Really…who?" Belle asked, though she was afraid of the answer.
"Sir Gaston!" Her father gestured to the proud man. "He has shown bravely, loyalty, and dedication to keeping you safe. I wouldn't trust any other for the hand of my daughter."
"I see…" Belle nodded. She knew she had no choice, but she didn't like Gaston. He was handsome…but he was also rude and conceited…he wasn't right for her…she…she didn't deserve him…
"Very well," Gaston said. He bent down to kiss her hand. "My lady." Belle managed to give him a half smile.
"Now, we have other business to discuss." Maurice said. "A war has started. We are fighting a war against ogres."
Belle knew that was her queue to leave, even though she wanted to stay and listen. She was quite curious about the outside world. She sighed and walked out of the throne room.
Story Brooke
Mr. Gold and Lacey were out for a stroll. He was holding her arm out to her, and she was holding it gently. It was snowing still, so he held an umbrella above their heads.
"Strange that it's snowing in July." Lacey observed.
"Indeed, it is." Mr. Gold replied. He glanced over at the Mayor's home. He watched as Emma and Frodo continued walking back and forth, packing things into a car, as though they were going on a trip. "I wonder what's going on over there?" He wondered out loud.
"What?" Lacey looked over at them. "Oh, it's Nathan." She seemed glum by the name.
"Is everything okay?" Mr. Gold asked. "I thought you were…friends."
"We…were." Lacey replied. "Lately, it's been…shaky…"
Before Mr. Gold could ask any more questions, a man approached them. He wore a red uniform. His long, black hair tied back into ponytail. He held his sword proudly.
"I am Sir Gaston!" He announced. "And you sir, have stolen my-"
"I'm sorry, who are you?" Lacey asked.
"Why Belle, don't you remember me? Sir Gaston? Captain of the Guard? Your knight in shining armor?" Gaston asked, his eyes clearly puzzled.
"No, I don't…and my name is not Belle."
"Excuse me, but I thought I turned you into a rose." Mr. Gold said irritably.
"Now I have returned!" Gaston replied, holding his sword under Mr. Gold's chin. "I will take back what is mine! You have stolen my bride, and have casted a spell on her to forget who she is. Now I have come for revenge!"
As Gaston swung his sword at Mr. Gold, the crippled man quickly blocked him with his cane. The two men were caught in an intense battle. Normally, Lacey would be impressed by Mr. Gold's fighting. But this time was different. She could only stand and watch in horror as Gaston's sword split Mr. Gold's cane. He fell to the ground, hard on his back. Gaston raised his sword, but then was shoved aside by Sheriff Swan. She snatched his sword out of his hand as she shoved him to the ground.
She cursed at him and pointed his own sword at him. "Who are you?"
Gaston could only look up at her in surprise.
"Fine, don't tell me. You are under arrest."
~jb~
"Sorry for the delay." Emma said to Frodo as she sat at her desk. Mr. Gold and Lacey were waiting outside the office. Frodo had come to give Mr. Gold one of the canes in his house. Frodo glanced over at the prison cells. The strange man was sitting on the small bed, glaring angrily back at him.
"No worries. I don't expect us to be leaving until tomorrow at least…" He slowly walked over to the cell, staring at the man. "Who are you?"
The man swiftly stood to face Frodo, attempting to intimidate him by his height.
"I am Sir Gaston!" He shouted. "Why is it that no one knows my name?"
"Because no one has seen you around here before." Frodo replied calmly.
"Of course…" Gaston whispered, seemingly to himself. "I was cursed…I was a rose… That man! That Rumpelstiltskin!" He turned his attention back to Frodo, raising his voice once more. "He turned me into a rose! And then cast a spell on Belle to make her forget who she is, and forget me!"
"There's a lot you don't know about this place." Frodo said.
"I know there was a curse, and I have been a rose this whole time!" Gaston declared. "I have been a rose for nearly 29 years!"
"Why did you attack those people?" Frodo asked.
"Many years ago, that beast stole her from me!"
"So, you're out for revenge." Frodo stated. "How did you turn back into a human?"
"The woman called Regina set me free." Gaston replied.
"It's all making sense now." Frodo stated. "Regina cursed Belle and turned her into Lacey… she's out for revenge on Mr. Gold… Emma, something has to be done about Lacey."
"Huh? What can we do?" Emma asked.
"Get her away from the beast!" Gaston cut in.
"From Gold?" Emma clarified.
"Where I come from, that is what we call him." Gaston replied.
"We'll figure something out." Emma told him. "Until then, we have to get ready for a trip. You will stay here."
"No…No! You must set me free!" Gaston pleaded.
"No," Emma replied. "You're too dangerous to let loose on Story Brook."
"No one says no to Gaston!" The man shouted.
"Funny," Emma replied calmly. "I just did."
~jb~
"I'm sorry, you want me to what?" Lacey asked, her eyes wide in shock.
"Come on, everyone loves a good camping trip." Emma reasoned, though she was not sure if it was a good idea herself; to let the cursed Belle come with them to stop a snow queen. But Frodo has come up with the idea and insisted upon it.
"I mean, you seem tense lately, and I feel bad for the other day. I thought I'd make it up to you." Frodo added.
"Nathan, you beat me at pool." Lacey said reassuringly.
"Yes, Mr. Bearer," Mr. Gold said through clenched teeth. "May I have a word with you?"
Frodo nodded and the two walked away from Emma and Lacey. Once they were out of earshot Mr. Gold turned to Frodo.
"Taking her to the woods to find Queen Elsa, are you mad?" He growled at the once hobbit. "If anything happens to her-"
"Mr. Gold, Regina is out to get revenge on you." Frodo said quietly. "And she thinks the best way to get through you, is going through her." He paused to gesture towards Lacey. "First, it was twisting her mind, and now it's sending Gaston to kill you or steal her heart…maybe next she'll seek to take Lacey's life! You can't let that happen."
"I won't let that happen." Mr. Gold snapped, but not loudly enough for the ladies to hear.
"Mr. Gold," Frodo took a deep breath. "We have Gaston in prison, and Regina doesn't know. Say we take Lacey for the few days, and Regina sees you walking by yourself without her…what do you suppose Regina will think?"
"What if Regina discovers Gaston was arrested?" Mr. Gold asked.
"Well then… Lacey is nowhere to be found. So, what's the harm?" Frodo shrugged. "And Regina knows we're going on a trip to the woods. She knows she can't chase and stop us. Otherwise the whole town would be certain she did this." Frodo lifted his gloved hands, catching some falling snowflakes.
Though Mr. Gold didn't seem quite convinced, he slowly nodded his head. "Very well, Mayor, I'll see if I can convince her to go with you. But if anything happens to her-"
"I swear on my life, I will protect her!" Frodo declared. "I will die protecting her. If I return without her…then you can kill me."
Mr. Gold seemed impressed by this brave hobbit. He wasn't entirely sure he could trust Frodo. He knew what he did when he was supposed to destroy The Ring, and nearly failed. But he felt he had no choice at this point. He nodded his head again. "Deal." He said blankly, trying not to show any emotion.
~jb~
Mr. Gold was able to talk Lacey into going on the trip. He told her he had some boring business to attend to and insisted it would be better for her to have a vacation. Lacey seemed somewhat reluctant and yet…
Part of her felt comfortable around this…Nathan Bearer. He reminded her of something she once dreamed of…maybe it was something she read… Whatever it was, she definitely felt more like herself around Nathan.
She packed her warmest clothes and blanket and met with the team in front of Nathan's house.
She sat in the car and watched as their friends waved at them as they were driving away.
Emma drove while Anna sat in the front seat. Frodo, Ruby and Lacey sat in the back, Lacey sitting in the middle. Outside they could see The Charming's, Henry, Rapunzel, and Mr. Gold waving at them. Henry seemed excited about their adventure. Everyone else seemed worried.
"Be safe Belle," Mr. Gold whispered so softly, no one would've heard him. "I love you."
They're finally off!
