Disclaimer and Explanation: Four of us got together and decided it would be a fun exercise to write letters to each other, each taking the point of view of one of the four Pevensies. These take place right after Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and obviously isn't ours! This disclaimer holds for the whole work, because I'd rather not write it every time.
Susan to Edmund, or
BrokenKestral to BellatrixTheStar
Dear Edmund,
We're settled into the hotel. If you asked my overall impression of America (and you would be interested in such things; I am writing Lucy the particulars, and Peter about some of the policies I've seen), I would say it is loud. As noisy as a banquet hall, but with very different sounds. There's more cars here, and the harbour is filled with jostling, yelling people. It seems busy, focused, efficient, and a bit rude. I doubt they take time for tea. But perhaps I will learn to like it.
There's young men here too. I had you and Peter in England, but anyone older than that is gone. Remember how they started calling it a lost generation? America doesn't have that. They had losses, and you can see from the careful way they sell and buy they had hardships; but it was a different war for them. It's kind of nice, to see a place with less suffering. We saw enough of it in both worlds. And they respond to their suffering with crazy, almost splendid rebellion. As if they danced in defiance of the dark. Or at least the younger crowd does. It draws me in. To forget the pain by grace and laughter with friends-but they are so young. I can see a certain grumpy dwarf who learned of lions watching them disapprovingly.
Dad's having a splendid time. You would have enjoyed going with him. The universities here are so young, too, compared with Oxford, buildings new and shining and without any of that history; but the ideas spring with the eagerness of youth as well. Instead of staid scholars, there are driven young men, or powerful men as professors. Mum doesn't know what to do with herself. I'm trying to help, but I would welcome your suggestions. What hobbies should we try, to draw her into enjoyment and rest?
And how is school? Is Peter excelling, and settling in again? Are you? Do write about your favourite subjects, and friends, and the ideas that catch your attention, in the midst of your studies. And make sure to eat enough. I miss your conversation, and request a letter to settle that loneliness. Take care,
You sister,
Susan
A/N: In order, the players are:
Peter: Southwest Expat
Susan: BrokenKestral
Edmund: BellatrixTheStar
Lucy: Scarlett Cash
After we get a handle on how this will work (so give us maybe six or seven letters?), we'd love to have others join if they'd like. If anyone is interested in joining the group as: Jill, Eustace, Professor Kirk, Polly, or even the Pevensie parents, do please let us know.
Author Credit: The title was Scarlett Cash's idea: "I also thought of "P.S." or "Post Scriptum" which is what that stands for, and it literally means 'after writing' in Latin. This, again, isn't super obvious in the way I'm thinking of it, but it made me think of how our letters are being added to what Lewis wrote, or is 'after his writing' of the Chronicles."
