H-hey guys...look who came back? Eheh...heh...
So…I'm sure some of you will be a little…surprised by this chapter. I've tried to hint at things with Machiko, and I'm sure the events of Bright Eyes have shown us that even as a little squirt, Machiko-chan has always been a little...unhinged. But hey! Now we get to see things from Machiko's eyes! Yay.
Machiko scares me.
Sometimes.
Also, as a warning, I think all the Loved Ones have a tendency to wax poetic…Machiko and Shigeru included. Shigeru's more vocal about it…but Machiko tends to only recite internally.
Another warning, this chapter is really confusing. I partially blame it on Machiko's tendency for third person, as well as the fact that it centers around her thoughts. Like Ai, Machiko is extremely unreliable in how she perceives the world around her. And like Ai, she's completely batshit. Soooooooo….not everything she thinks or says makes sense. I'm afraid that'd just how it is.
Also, due to the length, I've split it in 2. The other half is NEARLY finished...just a little bit more to go? Ha...but yeah. It's a very, very long chapter. I know I should have just tried to cut stuff out...but it all seemed really important to me? Ah...anyways. Enjoy.
DISCLAIMER: I don't own Naruto! Just Ai-chan and her growing list of minions.

Machiko's Eyes (Part One)
Aisako-sama was Machiko's most important person. She had done so, so much for Machiko-chan. Machiko wasn't sure where she would be without Aisako-sama's guidance. Who Machiko would have become. Most likely, if it were not for Aisako-sama's intervention, Machiko would have been forced to become the 'Princess' that Machiko's Mother and Father wanted. She would have become a merchant's wife. A house wife. A mother.
These things were all well and good in their own right, but they were all things Machiko personally didn't want.
Machiko was not kind enough to be a good mother. Machiko was not good at keeping places clean, or staying in one place long enough to survive without something fast-paced to take up her time. Machiko's heart wasn't warm enough to be a wife either.
That was why Machiko had long ago promised herself that Machiko would stand beside Aisako-sama, no matter what happened. Aisako-sama didn't want her to be a mother, nor did Aisako-sama want her to be a civilian (despite how she had tested Machiko's resolve when they were young). And Aisako-sama didn't want Machiko to love her.
Aisako-sama wanted Machiko to be loyal to Aisako-sama above all else. Machiko knew this. Machiko also knew that Aisako-sama was not kind to Machiko for Machiko's sake, and did not see her as the friend Machiko pretended they were. Aisako was like Machiko in that sense…cold. Aisako-sama intended to use Machiko as a 'meat shield', and kept her close because Aisako found safety in numbers.
Of course, Machiko was different from Aisako-sama in the fact that as cold as Aisako-sama was, there were times when the cold stone casing around her heart was sweet sap instead, and it would trap anyone who got mixed up in it. And then Aisako-sama's heart would turn to stone again, leaving her loved ones on display like trapped bugs in amber stone.
Machiko's heart did not turn to sap. Machiko's heart stayed cold and unmoving like a long forgotten tomb that was buried deep under the sand. Like any tomb that was hidden from robbers, Machiko's heart kept a tight hold on several valuable trinkets. Trinkets that would never leave unless someone forced their way through the sand and stone and forcefully ripped them away from the cold dead hands of the corpse contained within.
The only way someone could take away one of Machiko's…treasures…was if they pried it from her cold dead hands. It didn't matter if they used Machiko, or betrayed her. If someone could be one of Machiko's treasures…she'd do whatever needed to be done to keep them.
Machiko didn't love Aisako-sama…but she cared for Aisako-sama as much as she was capable.
So, when Aisako-sama let slip the little secret she had been hiding from Machiko, Sora-sama and everyone else for so, so long…Machiko didn't let it change her opinion of Aisako-sama. Negatively, at least.
Machiko did not need more negativity in her life. Why not focus on the positive? Machiko had known for many years that Aisako-sama was hiding something. Wasn't it impressive that she'd kept a secret among people trained to sniff them out? Machiko had always known Aisako-sama was something special.
No, Machiko didn't feel betrayed in the slightest. In fact, Machiko didn't deserve to know Aisako-sama's secret…not in the slightest. Not after Machiko kept her own secrets from Aisako-sama for just as long.
For a long time -or as long as a three year old child could call a long time- Machiko's world consisted of her parents and the kids on her street. Her parents had been the only people she really cared about though. Her Mommy was so pretty, and she always told Machiko bed time stories. Sometimes the stories were scary, but for the most part, they were about beautiful merchants' daughters catching the eyes of passing princes or lords and getting married and having their children. Machiko loved those stories, especially because her Daddy was a merchant. He even called her his little princess.
Machiko's Mommy and Daddy also made sure to protect her from the Monsters...the ones in her closet and the ones that ran through the village. There was a boy monster and a girl monster. Sometimes, Machiko thought they might be siblings, because they both had red hair, but they looked too different at the same time. She never got a good look at either of them though. When Machiko's Mommy or Daddy saw the two, they would hide her behind them and snap insults and bad words at them.
She knew the girl monster had pretty eyes though. They were a nice, warm orange colour, like the pretty beads on some of Mommy's necklaces...the kind that had the little bugs and flowers in them. Machiko's parents always said her eyes were creepy though. That they didn't belong on a child. Machiko wasn't sure what they were talking about. Although it did confuse Machiko that they were always saying that girl wasn't a child, but a monster, but then when they thought Machiko wasn't listening, they'd call the Monster a child. Wasn't that confusing?
"Why you talk like tha?" A boy at her daycare asked.
"Wike wha?" Machiko asked, tilting her head.
"Call y'self Machiko, 'stead of 'I' like other people?"
" 'Cause Machiko doesn't wike it." Machiko replied, folding her arms. She knew what would happen next.
"You're weird."
"Machiko is nawt!"
"Yeah you are! Weirdo!"
And Machiko got up and went to play somewhere else, because Machiko didn't want to hear what else the meanie would say. It wasn't like he was gonna say anything new. Machiko had heard it all. All sorts of mean names, hurtful questions.
Even Machiko's Mommy and Daddy were mean to Machiko. Mommy was always telling Machiko to 'talk like normal' because 'it's embarrassing' or 'not proper'. Never mind that Machiko was three, and the idea of making a child that young 'proper' is cruel and unrealistic. Machiko was a child. Machiko cared not for propriety and their petty sense of normality. Normal is what you make it.
Or...at least that's what that one great big book Machiko read at the library said.
One day, Machiko went to the park. She was being naughty, and didn't tell her Mommy and Daddy where she went. Machiko liked to cause trouble sometimes. It was funny watching her Mommy get so worried about her. Her Mommy worried a lot. She was always going on about Machiko having a good future, and worried that it Machiko didn't stop speaking in third person, people wouldn't like Machiko.
No one really did like her. She could tell. Machiko's Daddy always looked annoyed when Machiko called herself 'Machiko', instead of I. But, she didn't like calling Machiko I, because that sounded much too much like eye. Machiko wasn't an eye. She wasn't slimy and round, and she didn't make a gross 'squish' noise when you squeezed her...Not that Machiko knew what sound eyeballs made when you squished them...no. Never.
So, because people thought Machiko was weird, and dumb, they didn't play with Machiko. Machiko went to the park and played by herself, going on the swings and down the slides, and playing in the sand, even though she could do that anywhere in the village. It was while she was sitting in the sand that Machiko noticed her.
It was the girl monster. She looked around the park, looking...not happy.
Machiko found herself curious. The girl monster didn't usually make that face. Usually, whenever Machiko was with her Mommy or Daddy and they saw the girl monster, the girl monster would always look so happy. She'd smile and say funny things, and stick up for herself when people bullied her.
Today, the girl monster wasn't smiling. She looked bored.
Machiko was pretty bored too.
When people were bored, the best thing to do was do things together, because that would make them not bored, right? So Machiko got up, out of the sand, and ran up to the girl monster. Machiko tugged on her shirt to get her full attention. The Monster looked down at Machiko, and Machiko got her first good look at those pretty orange eyes. Machiko's Mommy and Daddy were right...there was something strange about her eyes.
"Hey, hey! You be fwends wit' Machiko-chan?"
The moment of truth. Machiko wanted to see if the Monster was really as bad as her parents said...and see if the monster would make fun of Machiko too.
But she didn't. Instead, the monster girl smiled at Machiko. "Yeah, I'll be Machiko-chan's friend."
"Yay! Machiko-chan happy now!" Machiko giggled, "Machiko is thwee!"
The girl pointed to herself, "Aisako is four."
Aisako.
That was a pretty name. Machiko liked it. 'Loved Child' sounded so much nicer than 'Wise Child'. And Aisako was a whole year older than Machiko! That was so cool! Machiko had an older friend now!
"Now, Machiko-chan can't tell her parents that Aisa is her friend, got it?"
That was a good idea. Machiko's parents weren't nice to Aisako. They wouldn't like it if Machiko was her friend.
"Machiko-chan won't tell Mommy an' Daddy."
"Good. Now what does Machiko-chan wanna do?"
Oh! What could they play? Hm...not ninja. Machiko didn't know how to play that one, and she wasn't sure if Aisako knew how either.
"Um...Machiko-chan wants to...play tag!" Then, Machiko poked Aisako and ran away to start the game.
Machiko didn't think Aisako was scary at all, even if she was chasing her. She was sad when the adults at the park ruined their game and stopped Aisako.
Who did they think they were? They weren't Machiko's Mommy and Daddy! They weren't Aisako's mommy and daddy either! Therefore, they shouldn't really have any say in what Machiko and Aisako did, as long as it was legal! And...Machiko was relatively sure that tag wasn't against the law? Maybe she needed to check and see...
Machiko met up with Aisako as often as she could. It was hard to sneak away from Mommy and Daddy, but every once in a while she could do it. Of course, Machiko and Aisako-chan couldn't be together for too long, or else Machiko's Mommy and Daddy would find Machiko, and yell and scream at Aisako-chan. They even threw things at Machiko's friend! And then Machiko's Mommy would tell Machiko she wasn't allowed to wander by herself, because she'd get attacked my monsters again…it wasn't fair. Aisako got to wander around all the time. Machiko even saw Aisako playing outside at night. On the rooftops!
Of course, Aisako was always with the other Monster when she was out at night. Machiko wasn't scared of Aisako, but the boy monster was scary. Machiko didn't like the way he felt. It was like there was more than one of him there, and one of them was bad. Bad, bad, bad. And strong. Too strong. If he and Aisako fought, Machiko knew Aisako wouldn't win- even though Aisako was super strong and way better than normal people.
Machiko could see it now, what her parents were talking about in Aisako's eyes. Instead of having bugs in them, Aisako's amber eyes had something else. Something old. Aisako had old people eyes. Machiko could feel something different about Aisako as well. Something special. Machiko liked it.
But it made Machiko wonder if Aisako was human. If not, then maybe Aisako was a god? Or a spirit, or a fairy or- or- or a demon? Were there good demons? There had to be, if Aisako was one of them.
Sometimes, when Machiko was sneaking away from her Mommy and Daddy, she heard strange people talking about Aisako. They called her the 'Loved Child'. They called her 'a Divine Being in human flesh'. A goddess.
They said Aisako was not to blame for her reputation. They said Aisako was a miracle. She should be treated as such. But the stupid fools who didn't understand her feared her. The miracle that made Aisako so special was tainted with blood, and all most people could see was the way the blood stained things...not the thing the blood stained.
Machiko wanted to learn more, but whenever the people saw Machiko listening, they'd stop talking and leave. Machiko hated secrets. Especially when people are sharing secrets around Machiko, but they don't share them with Machiko, so then Machiko has to go hunt people down to find out answers to interesting things. Ugh.
Machiko pouted as she watched Aisako playing with the boy, Gaara. She wanted to spend more time with Aisako-chan, but Machiko's parents were getting annoying. They were trying really hard to make Machiko someone she wasn't. They were still trying to make Machiko an eyeball.
She really couldn't go around calling herself I. Not when it sounded so much like Ai. Like Aisako. Machiko wasn't an Eyeball or Aisako.
They didn't understand that Machiko wasn't an eyeball or Aisako. Machiko was Machiko.
Machiko was an individual! She was different from everyone else...just as all people are. Machiko had things about her that made Machiko super special! Machiko had the way she talked, for one. She also had her brains. Machiko knew that she was special that way. See...Machiko was secretly very smart.
It was fun keeping it a secret. Adults would say things around her, thinking she couldn't understand what they were saying. But she did, because Machiko knew lots and lots of big words! She could also read all the books she wanted to, which were waaay more interesting than those stupid stories Machiko's parents read to her.
Since she was so smart, Machiko also knew how to pay attention to things. She'd always been good at noticing people. When she played hide-and-seek, she always knew where to look for other kids. She noticed how people were feeling, if they were sick or not. She could even tell how people changed over time.
Recently, her parents had been becoming very stressed. Something about the economy. She knew it was important, but it was very boring, so she tended to forget what it was. If it was boring, why let something take up space in her head?
Machiko also noticed that something felt different about both of the 'monsters'. Gaara felt worse, like the bad part was growing. Aisako-chan...she felt...sharper. Something had changed, but Machiko didn't know what. Maybe...Aisako-chan felt a little more dangerous than before.
But Machiko wouldn't let that scare her. Aisako-chan was scary, that much was true, but Aisako-chan was also very kind. In a strange, violent, bad-wordy kind of way.
Gaara wasn't a good demon.
Machiko could see the big bad monster inside Gaara now. He was huge, blocking out the full moon as the building he was standing on collapsed. Machiko had seen it all, watching from a roof Machiko had climbed up all by herself. She had planned on showing Aisako-chan the next time they met, so that Machiko and Aisako-chan could play on the rooftops together.
But now…Machiko was stuck…watching in terror as a monster, a real actual monster, tore apart the buildings around it. Machiko's Mommy and Daddy had been right about one thing. The boy was a monster. Not like Aisako-chan, who was only a monster because people said she was.
Machiko didn't want to remember what she saw. She saw the Boy's sand protect Aisako-chan from the Bad Man's explosive suicide (although Machiko had to wonder how anything about that death could be considered 'happy', so how could suicide mean 'happy death'?). Machiko even saw the way Gaara changed. Saw Aisako-chan try to calm him, only for him to lash out at her…saw the Monster rise up and grasp her by the leg-
Could a five year old really have so much blood? Aisako-chan was so small, even compared to kids younger than her…Machiko was already close to Aisako-chan's size…did Machiko have that much blood inside her?
Machiko wanted to help Aisako-chan, but that was- there was no way for Machiko to do that. What could Machiko do against a monster like the thing that had just-
Even if Machiko was able to help, she was too far away to be of any help. It certainly didn't help that the streets were flooded with screaming people, all running away from the monster. Machiko wasn't strong enough to make the jumps from building to building, so she couldn't travel by rooftop…and there was no way Machiko could fight the flow of the crowd. Machiko was just a small, small four year old.
Machiko was weak.
But Machiko would pray that whoever it was that caught Aisako-chan was strong enough to protect her from the monster Aisako-chan's 'friend' had become.
Machiko dreamed of blood; droplets glittering like cold rubies in the moonlight. So pretty.
The man was tall. Taller than Ai's dad, and most of the other men Machiko had seen in the village. Besides his height, there wasn't a lot about him that stood out. He looked like someone Aisako-chan would call 'hot', but his hair and eyes were brown, and he dressed plainly too. He did a good job of blending in, considering the way his presence felt. He kinda...gave off this 'listen to me! Rawr' vibe. Machiko found it hard not to stare at him. So she didn't bother trying not to. She stared at him as much as she wanted.
He seemed used to it anyways.
Machiko wasn't sure what he wanted, so Machiko didn't scream when he suddenly appeared in front of her, being all ninja like. Mommy and Daddy had told Machiko to respect the ninjas and do what they said.
"Are you the child named Machiko?" he worded it as a question, but Machiko got the feeling he already knew the answer.
"Yes. This is Machiko-chan."
"Good. Machiko-chan, I'd like it if you were to accompany me? It's about your friend, Aisako-chan."
And wasn't that strange, because Machiko-chan and Aisako-chan had been very, very careful not to get caught the few times they got together. They rotated parks to meet at, if they saw one another. They didn't outright approach one another. Aisako-chan was always vigilant.
Not that Machiko saw Aisako-chan anymore…since Aisako-chan was in the hospital, and Machiko wasn't allowed there to visit her…
So. How did Ninja-san know about Machiko and Aisako-chan being friends?
"Who are you, Ninja-san?
There was no point in lying to him and denying her relationship with Aisako-chan. Ninjas knew when you were a liar.
"My name is Sora, Machiko-chan, and I know some people I think you will like to meet."
Machiko didn't really have a choice in the matter. In the next instant, Sora had wrapped his arms around her, and carried her off to another part of the village. One must never forget the speeds a ninja can achieve.
The building looked no different from the ones around it, save for a marking carved into the door frame. The marking looked like a sun; it was a circle surrounded by lines pointing outwards. Only, this sun wasn't quite right, in that the circle looked more like an egg...or maybe a tear drop?
Besides the marking, the building looked normal enough. It was two floors, made of the same stone as the rest of the village, with a worn out looking wooden door, and it had a few windows scattered about. Under the windows, little box gardens containing cacti hung. Through the windows, Machiko could see people milling around inside.
A boy, not much older than Machiko opened the door as Sora went to open it for Machiko. The boy had black hair and green eyes, and he was dressed in odd brown robes.
"Sora-sama!"
"Shigeru-kun. It's nice to see you again. Are your parents here?"
"Yes sir! Mother and Father are here." Shigeru said, nodding his head rapidly, "It's an honour to see you, Sora-sama!"
"Would you lead us to them? I have someone important to introduce them to." Sora told the boy. Sora motioned to Machiko as he said this, and Machiko shifted awkwardly as 'Shigeru' stared at Machiko with an intense expression.
Then, he let out a gasp, his eyes flying towards Sora, before going back to staring at Machiko.
"Is...is she? The...The Maiden?"
Sora grinned, "That is correct! Shigeru, I'd like you to meet Machiko, the Maiden. Machiko is someone very close to the Loved Child."
Machiko had to cover her ears as the boy squealed and hopped around in joy.
"And Machiko, this is Shigeru-kun. His family owns this building. They were kind enough to share it with the rest of us."
"Where...are we?"
"I'll explain that inside. Come along, Machiko-chan. There is much for you to earn about your friend, Aisako."
Machiko learned very much about Aisako-cha-sama. Machiko learned about the day Aisako-sama was born, and the day she came to life. Machiko learned about the Loved Child's Mother and Father, and how they fled the wrath of their god, only to give birth to another. Machiko learned the songs the other children at the Temple sang.
Admittedly, there weren't many child Loved Ones- Or many Loved Ones in general, but Machiko thought the Loved Ones made up for their lack of numbers through their devotion and enthusiasm.
The Loved Ones loved Machiko. Machiko could tell. They welcomed her with hugs and kind words whenever Machiko came to visit. While it wasn't nearly as important to Machiko as when Aisako-sama hugged Machiko, Machiko still liked the warmth the Loved Ones gave her. It was very different from Machiko's home. Machiko's Mommy and Daddy didn't love Machiko like they used to…but Machiko didn't really need them to love Machiko, since Machiko had lots and lots of Mommies and Daddies among the Loved Ones.
The Loved Ones, the Beloveds, begged Machiko to tell them about Aisako-sama, and what Machiko and Aisako-sama did together. They listened to every word Machiko said about the Loved Child. From what Machiko told them, they found lessons in Aisako-sama's words and actions. Lessons to live by. Machiko thought it was very amusing, knowing that Aisako-sama wasn't trying to teach them anything. Machiko also knew that Aisako-sama would be pleased to find out that there were people who looked up to her.
"Machiko-chan."
Machiko looked up from her book to see Sora-sama standing before her. It was a little surprising to see him here, in the civilian library of all places. Especially because Machiko had been oh-so-careful to be super sneaky to get into the library without any adults seeing her. They always kicked up a fuss when they saw Machiko reading big books. Like they thought Machiko was some sort of animal hell-bent on ripping out the pages instead of reading them
Blasphemy.
"Sora-sama! Machiko is happy to see you!"
He chuckled, a pleasant sound. Aisako-cha-sama would say it was an 'angel's laugh'…whatever an angel was. Machiko couldn't find anything about them in any books she read. It bother Machiko, but considering what Aisako-sama was, maybe an 'angel' was something from where Aisako-sama was actually from?
"I'm pleased to see you as well Machiko-chan…in fact, you're just the little Maiden I was looking for." Sora-sama told Machiko, taking a seat at the table Machiko had claimed for herself and her books, "I have a super secret mission for you, Machiko-chan…do you think you can do it?"
Machiko ignored the slight condescension in Sora-sama's voice, and let out a 'hm' in thought. It all depended on what the 'super secret mission' was. After all, Machiko was only good at some things…and if it was something Machiko was bad at, Machiko wouldn't be able to get it done…in which case her answer would be 'no, Machiko cannot do it'…because Machiko could not. However, if it was something Machiko was capable of doing…then yes.
"What's the mission, Sora-sama?"
He smiled at Machiko, "Well, Machiko-chan… I need you to keep some secrets from Aisako-sama for me."
Ah. That was a very serious request. Didn't he remember that Aisako-sama valued honesty? That lying made her angry because it was underhanded and cowardly? And it always 'came back to bite you in the ass'? The only person allowed to lie was Aisako-sama herself, and that was because she was keeping a secret from the entire population, likely in regards to how a Being such as herself ended up in a human body. Or something like that.
Whatever it was, Aisako-sama was free to keep secrets. Aisako-sama was special.
"What sort of secrets? Why?"
"Aisako-sama must not know about the Temple, or the Loved Ones…she cannot learn about the stories we tell, and about the way she came into our world. And when, eventually, she learns of our little…community…you must not let her know you are a part of it."
"Why not?"
"Because, Machiko-chan…Aisako-sama is cautious around people. So many people try to hurt her that she is at times…unfamiliar with others treating her with kindness. So she cannot learn about the Temple right now, because she isn't ready to trust the Loved Ones. It'll only make her panic and wonder what their intentions are. And the reason why she can't find out that you know? Aisako-sama has been wounded. Her trust is a fragile thing, and the betrayal she has recently faced is an open wound."
Machiko winced, because Machiko could remember with perfect clarity just what Aisako-sama's 'open wound' looked like. It looked like a bloody stump for a leg-
"I do not think she would take well to you being a part of this group. She would be suspicious of your intentions, and constantly aware that anything she said or did could be passed on to the rest of the Loved Ones."
She could…understand what he was saying. If she told Aisako-sama about the Loved Ones, it would make Aisako-paranoid. Aisako-sama might even feel obligated to change who she was, to better impact the Loved ones and their behaviour…or she would attempt to scare off the Loved Ones…and the Loved Ones, being who they were, would try to win Aisako-sama's favour, which would make Aisako-sama more paranoid…and it was a vicious cycle better off avoided. Worst still, Aisako-sama would hate Machiko for 'spying'…
It would be better if Machiko stayed quiet…and when the time came…blamed it all on Sora. He was an adult…he could handle Aisako-sama's scorn. Probably.
"So…Sora-sama just wants Machiko-chan to not tell Aisako-sama about the Loved Ones, or that Aisako-sama is the Loved Child? And if Aisako-sama does learn about her following, Machiko-chan has to pretend not to know about it?"
Sora-sama seems to weigh something in his head, humming to himself. Eventually, he crouched down so he was at eye-level with Machiko. Then, very quietly, but seriously he whispered, "Well…there's one other thing I want you to do, Machiko-chan…and it's something very, very important. Even more important than keeping secrets from Aisako-sama."
Machiko's eyes went wide.
"I need Machiko-chan to do her very best to protect Aisako-sama. You can do that, can't you, Machiko-chan?"
"Protect Aisako-sama? Machiko?"
Was...Sora-sama serious?
Because if he was, Mahiko was worried that Sora-sama might be ill. Perhaps a fever? Delusional? Or maybe he was drunk? Oh! OR he'd taken candy from a strange man in an alleyway? And it was making him see and think funny things. Like Machiko being able to protect Aisako-sama.
"Yes, Machiko-chan. I need you to stay close to Aisako-sama, and do your very best to stop people from hurting her. I will, or course, have my own people keeping a close eye on her…but someday, when Aisako-sama is a kunoichi, I won't be able to keep an eye on her when she's away on missions. I want you to protect her when I can't…think of it as your job as the Maiden…just like it's my job as the Guardian."
Machiko watched Sora-sama for a long moment. Could Machiko really do that? Protect Aisako-sama? Did Aisako-sama even need protecting? Aisako-sama was immortal- or at least, something close to it. There was no other way to explain it. No matter how many times people tried to poison her, she would keep going. A monster- a demon- attacked her, and she got away with only a missing leg.
Aisako-sama could be hurt, but not killed.
Not that Machiko wanted Aisako-sama to get hurt though! Machiko would kill anyone who tried to- Huh. Maybe Machiko would do a good job protecting Aisako-sama? But…how? Machiko was weak. Without training, there was no way Machiko would be able to protect Aisako-sama from the people who would try to harm her…and there was no way her parents would let Machiko become a kunoichi.
But…If Machiko was very, very sneaky…
Machiko took great care to be super innocent the day she visited Aisako-sama. She greeted her Mommy and Daddy with bright smiles and said her 'I's and Me's' often enough to please them. Then. Machiko asked, oh-so-sweetly, if Machiko could go play at the park. She promised to be a good little girl.
They let Machiko go, too full of themselves to think she might be tricking them. They thought Machiko was a stupid little girl, and that they'd 'crushed the childish rebellion out of her'…but they were wrong. They were the ones that named Machiko 'wise child'. One would think that would give them a hint. But they were stupid, stupid people.
When Machiko arrived at the hospital, she didn't stop by reception. That would only get her turned away, likely by the desk-worker's misguided attempt to 'protect' Machiko from Aisako-sama. No. Machiko already knew exactly what to do! Sora-san was thoughtful enough to show Machiko a photo of the man who would be Aisako-sama's doctor. Someone named Kazuo. Machiko spots him the moment she enters the hospital.
Big, beaming smile in place, Machiko skipped up to the limping man and tugs at his long white coat to get his attention. She was very proud of her acting skills, and knows exactly how to make her face look super-duper cute!
"Hello…Machiko-chan was wondering if you knew where Aisako-chan is?"
"Hm?" Brown eyes stare down at Machiko with mild interest.
"Machiko-chan is looking for Aisako-chan…Aisako-chan got hurt, and Machiko-chan is worried 'bout her."
The tall man tilts his head to the side, likely weighing the pros and cons of taking Machiko to see Aisako-sama. Aisako-sama did have quite a few people out to kill her, and if he were to tell just anyone where she is-
"Alright. She could use some company."
What did he mean by that? Machiko knew for a fact that Aisako-sama's family; her mother, father, adoptive brother and the visiting relative, visited Aisako-sama at least once a day.
Kazuo snorted at the look on Machiko's face, "Family's good and all, but sometimes people need to spend time with friends instead."
Maybe the doctor was right? Maybe, Aisako-sama would be really happy to see Machiko? Machiko could hope, couldn't she?
With a slight skip in her step, Machiko followed the blue-haired doctor further into the hospital, chattering away excitedly (Machiko was pretty sure she'd repeated 'Aisako-chan and Machiko-chan are bestest friends' at least five times now. To cement the statement into his mind…of course. Totally not because Machiko had run out of fodder statements to avoid actual conversations…)
"This is her room. I'll let her know she's got company, and then you can go on ahead in."
"Okidoki!"
Machiko was not stupid. She saw the way Aisako-sama's face fell when Machiko entered the room. Machiko knew that Machiko was not the one Aisako-sama wanted to see. It hurt, seeing Aisako-sama's smile dim ever-so-slightly. Aisako-sama was so pretty when she smiled. It showed her real self, with all her jagged edges-
One of the older Loved Ones said that Aisako-sama was pretty like broken stained glass. Colourful and sparkly…but splintering and sharp on the edges. Something in Aisako-sama had always been broken…
But the Demon had ground Aisako-sama's glass to dust.
It would be best if Machiko could wipe that sad look off Aisako-sama's face. Maybe if Machiko announced her plan to protect Aisako-sama, it would amuse her enough that Aisako-sama wouldn't be sad anymore? Because, of course Aisako-sama would find it amusing. She was a goddess trapped in human form- of course she wouldn't need a four year old's help…right?
But maybe it would cheer her up enough, and Machiko would be able to put some of the broken pieces together? Surely the Demon hadn't destroyed all of her. Just part of her.
"Machiko-chan missed Aisako-chan, so Machiko-chan snuck out of park to visit!"
Machiko made her way to the bed struggling to pull herself up onto it. Why did they have to make furniture so big? How was Machiko supposed to use things like chairs or beds if they were too tall for Machiko?
Once Machiko was up on the bed, she sat 'crisscross applesauce' across from Aisako-sama.
It was kinda confusing, actually, addressing Aisako-sama as 'Aisako-chan', because Machiko felt it wasn't…right…to think she was so close to Aisako-sama. But if Machiko called her Aisako-sama-
So…referring to Aisako-sama one way mentally, and another way vocally. Confusing, but better than drawing Aisako-sama's attention. Wouldn't want to get caught so soon after Sora-sama gave Machiko her mission…right?
"You know, Machiko-chan, you really shouldn't have come here. If anyone at the hospital knows your Mommy and Daddy, they'll tell on you."
Machiko's eyes widened. That was true. If someone told them, and Machiko's parents found out they'd been tricked- Why had Machiko just…strolled in? She knew better than that! Panic flooded Machiko's thoughts for a brief moment, before Machiko cuts it off. There's no point in panicking. None at all. She just needs to have a plan for if someone tells….but…
Machiko didn't really care about what her parents thought…did she? When was the last time Machiko wanted their approval? Machiko didn't even need their approval. Not if she could get Sora-san or Aisako-sama's instead.
Besides…Machiko's parents didn't understand. They would never understand. They were so wrapped up in their fear for Aisako-sama's abilities and the whole…dead-not-dead thing that they couldn't see what Machiko saw. They didn't understand that Aisako-sama made Machiko feel important. She took time to speak with Machiko and to play games with Machiko. She didn't make fun of Machiko like all the 'good' and 'normal' people did. Aisako-sama accepted Machiko as Machiko.
"Machiko doesn't care! Machiko's Mommy and Daddy are big dumb-dumbs! They don't know anything about Aisako! Aisako not scary...Aisako is nice, and plays with Machiko. Aisako is tough, and brave and smart and- and- Aisako is not a monster! They...they don't know Aisako. It isn't fair. No one talks about why Aisako bad! They just say Aisako is bad and that Machiko should avoid her, but Aisako is Machiko's friend...Machiko doesn't have a lot of friends. Everyone makes fun of Machiko because Machiko calls herself Machiko instead of using 'me', or 'I'...Why would Machiko-chan call herself an eye? Machiko-chan is not eyeball!"
Blue eyes zeroed in on the smile fluttering on Aisako-sama's lips. Was she pleased?
Machiko hoped so. Machiko hoped and hoped that Aisako-sama wanted Machiko to stick around, "But being an eyeball not important! M-Machiko-chan heard that Aisako-chan got hurt, s-so...So...Machiko has decided to protect Aisako."
Machiko could see the way Aisako-sama's amber eyes widened in shock. It almost made Machiko laugh. Who knew Machiko could shock someone like Aisako-sama?
"WaitwaitwaitwaitWAIT! What? Machiko-chan...you're a civilian though...your family is civilian...you can't just...you- Dam-Darn it! Listen, Machiko-chan...I'm really happy to hear you want to...protect me, but I don't need protecting...besides, you're a little civilian girl...I don't want you getting hurt for trying to protect me. I'll be fine."
Ouch. Machiko already knew she was weak. Machiko already knew that there was much Machiko needed to fix about herself before she could dream of being of use to Aisako-sama…but she really didn't need that to come right from Aisako-sama…
Still. Even if Aisako-sama didn't think Machiko could do it, Machiko could not back down. Not when Sora-san had ordered it, and not when it meant leaving Aisako-sama unprotected, "No."
"Um...what?" Amber eyes blinked at Machiko.
"No."
"No, what?"
"No Machiko give up. Machiko protect Aisako!"
Aisako-sama groaned, "Listen...right now you can't protect me at all."
"Then Machiko will become a kun- kuno...a girl ninja!"
Machiko could see the exact moment when Aisako-sama gave up the fight. The way Aisako-sama's shoulders relaxed the slightest bit, the way the air escaped her lungs in one short burst.
"Fine. Do what you want, kid, but...if you ever decide that having me as a friend is more dangerous than having me as a monster...let me know, and I'll be the monster everyone wants you to see me as."
Machiko blinked at Aisako-sama, confused. Why was Aisako-sama doing that? Giving Machiko a way out of their 'friendship'? Offering to be the 'monster' instead of the 'girl'? Didn't she realize that Machiko was never going to leave her side?
Eventually, Aisako-sama was recovered enough to go back to the academy. Machiko tried to be patient and wait for Aisako-sama to get back into her routine, but Machiko was eager to start training alongside Aisako-sama.
As soon as Machiko was sure Aisako-sama was recovered enough, Machiko could not contain herself.
"Aisako-sama!" Machiko threw herself into Aisako-sama's arms. It was the first time since Aisako-sama had been released that Machiko got to see her. Even though Machiko knew it would annoy Aisako-sama, Machiko was just so happy to see her again!
"Hello, Machiko-chan." Aisako-sama greeted Machiko in a tired sounding voice. Machiko was aware of the look Aisako-sama cast her relative. Machiko could see the surprised amusement on his face. He had been there the night Aisako-sama had been hurt, and she knew that he thought Aisako-sama's only friend was the Demon. But he was wrong. Machiko was Aisako-sama's friend…even if Aisako-sama didn't think so.
"Machiko has not seen Aisako-sama in so long! So Machiko went looking for Aisako-sama, and Machiko found her here!"
Hearing the sound the relative made, Machiko decided she didn't like him. He was judging Machiko for how Machiko spoke…wasn't he? And judging Aisako-sama because the Demon attacked her?
"Well, you've seen me."
"Machiko is wondering what Aisako-sama is doing out here with the man that looks suspiciously like Aisako-sama's father."
"I'm training." Aisako-sama told Machiko. Machiko internally cursed herself for sounding so stupid. Or course Aisako-sama was training…why else would she be at a training ground? What if Aisako-sama decided Machiko was too stupid to be around? What if she made Machiko leave?
The 'relative' snorted at Aisako-sama's response, yanking Machiko from Machiko's thoughts.
Machiko felt her head slowly turn to stare at the man who looked very much like The Father. Why did he snort there? Did he think Aisako-sama wasn't trying, or that he had any right to mock her? Were it not for the fact that he was part of Aisako-sama's family-
There was a small burst of satisfaction within Machiko, when she saw the man shift uncomfortably. Was this how Aisako-sama felt all the time? When the crowded street would part so that she could casually stroll on through?
Pleased with the result of her look, Machiko looked away from the man, and instead turned to beam at Aisako-sama. It was time to put her plan into action!
"Oh! Machiko wants to join!"
"Why?"
Machiko tightly hugged Aisako-sama, relishing in the fact that out of all the Loved Ones Sora-sama could have chosen to get close to Aisako-sama, he chose Machiko. None of the other Loved Ones had gotten the honour of hugging Aisako-sama. They didn't know how warm and comfortable Aisako-sama was to hug.
"Because Machiko must get stronger too. Then Machiko can protect Aisako-sama from meanies."
The relative was laughing. Machiko ignored him. Instead, she paid attention to the way Aisako-sama looked pleadingly towards the man, begging him to let Machiko join. At least…Machiko was hoping she was begging him to let Machiko join…
"She can join."
"Yay!" Machiko squealed, "Now Machiko can spend all her time with Aisako-sama! Oh! And Aisako-sama can teach Machiko to be a very 'kickass' ku- kunoi- girl ninja!"
Aisako-sama locked eyes with Machiko, and Machiko watched as a beautiful, kind smile bloomed across Aisako-sama's face, "Of course, I'd love to help teach Machiko-chan. You are going to be my protector after all, and I need you to be super strong for me."
Oh Aisako-sama…don't think Machiko didn't see what you just did there. Don't think Machiko didn't see that moment, when guilt flickered through those amber eyes. Machiko saw. Machiko knows. Aisako-sama was going to try and manipulate Machiko into becoming the protector Machiko offered to be. But that was such a silly idea…because Machiko offered to be her protector. There was no need to try and trick Machiko into being loyal.
Machiko already was.
The memory of Machiko's Mommy snarling at Machiko, before she backhanded her child, kept playing over and over again in Machiko's mind. No matter how hard she tried to forget, she couldn't.
She couldn't go to Aisako-sama about this…she couldn't tell Aisako-sama what her Mommy was like.
But there weren't many Machiko could go to. It was either Aisako-sama, Sora-san…or the other Loved Ones. Machiko was sure that if Machiko went to see Shigeru's parents they'd-
They'd what? What did Machiko want? Not…for Machiko's parents to be hurt…Machiko didn't…Machiko wanted…
Hugs.
Hugs sounded nice.
So Machiko wandered down to the Temple, knocking on the door, hoping someone was home.
Shinkiro Tengai opened the door for Machiko, looking at her in confusion. It wasn't an agreed worship day, so Machiko could understand why she was confused.
Machiko looked up into Tengai-san's green, green eyes.
"Machiko-chan…needs hugs?"
Machiko joined Aisako-sama in training. Aisako-sama was kind enough to go over everything she learned at the academy with Machiko. The least Machiko could do was commit every word and movement to memory. The sooner she caught up to Aisako-sama the sooner she could protect her like she and Sora-sama wanted.
"Alright Machiko, I'll show you the katas we learned last week, then I'll give you my notes from last year to study."
"Yes Aisako-sama!" Machiko quickly mimicked the stance Aisako-sama taught her. Machiko knew that she'd be covered in dirt again by the end of the day…and that she'd have to make up another lie to tell her Mommy and Daddy to explain the mess. She knew they'd be irrational if they found out what Machiko was doing in her spare time. They'd also be quite upset when they found out Machiko wanted to go to the Academy…but what else could Machiko do but beg and plead? Machiko was just a child…and no one would let Machiko chose what to do with her life…because that was just a stupid idea, right?
Eventually, Aisako-sama decided she and Machiko were done with katas, and Aisako-sama pulled out notes from her class for Machiko to read. Of course, Aisako-sama hadn't realized how quickly Machiko could read, so Machiko admittedly slacked off from time to time, and instead found herself wondering what stories she could tell the Loved Ones when she met with them next.
Aisako-sama had 'taught' them a great many things. Individualism, confidence, honesty…and now Machiko could tell them that Aisako-sama valued the pursuit of knowledge, right? Not that they didn't already know that, given that Aisako-sama was seen reading quite often.
When it was time to leave the training ground, Machiko made sure to keep up with Aisako-sama (who moved so gracefully now on her new leg…she was so amazing to have adapted that easily- although sometimes Machiko saw her wobble or stumble…no more than the normal person…right?), and raised the courage to grip Aisako-sama's hand in her own.
Machiko valued every second she got, and still thanked Sora-sama for ordering Machiko to spend more time with Aisako-sama. All the other Loved Ones her age were soooooo jealous. It was adorable the way Shigeru-kun would pout at Machiko when she talked about getting hugs and from Aisako-sama.
Machiko grinned at Aisako-sama, swinging the hand she was holding, "Machiko has decided that Machiko wants to be bestest, best friends with Aisako-sama. Machiko wants EVERYONE to know, too. That way, Machiko won't have to deal with them saying mean things about Aisako-sama near Machiko anymore. Aisako-sama is good. Everyone else is just stupid!"
Machiko's heart warmed when she saw the way Aiskao-sama's amber eyes flickered around them, looking to see if anyone had overheard. Even though she told herself she was only using Machiko, Aisako-sama was still concerned for Machiko's safety. Concerned that someone would hurt Machiko if they found out about their friendship.
"Machiko...your Mommy and Daddy won't like that." Aisako-sama said, her voice filled with concern.
"MACHIKO DOESN'T CARE! Machiko wants to be with Aisako-sama! Machiko doesn't want to hide. Machiko will show everyone Aisako-sama is good and nice!"
Machiko could see the way an amused smile danced on the edge of Aisako-sama's lips. Did Aisako-sama doubt Machiko?
Well. Machiko would prove it for Aisako-sama then. Machiko would train and become stronger…Machiko would serve Sora-sama and gain power…and then Machiko would show the village just how perfect Aisako-sama was.
Machiko learned so, so much from Aisako-sama and Satoru. So much.
It was strange, listening to the things Aisako-sama taught Machiko…not the things that Aisako-sama learned in the Academy…but the things Aisako-sama learned from the world around her.
Aisako-sama could read the people around her…see what they were doing, how they were manipulating her. Aisako-sama knew just how to get under someone's skin, but still seem innocent. Aisako-sama knew words Machiko was forbidden from repeating… 'curse words', Aisako-sama called them. Which were different from the 'spells' Aisako-sama would yell when she stubbed her toe, in an attempt to not use a curse.
So…'fuck' sometimes became 'flipendo'.
Also…Aisako-sama sometimes said strange things when she thought no one was paying attention. Things like 'Fear me, for I am Lord Voldemorte- but sexy!'
Or she called herself an 'Antichrist'. Whatever that was.
Aisako-sama also knew lots and lots of songs. While she'd never sang them directly to Machiko, Machiko could sometimes catch Aisako-sama humming or singing to herself when she was bored. Machiko never heard any of them before Aisako-sama.
But…it wasn't just songs and weird words Machiko learned from Aisako-sama. Sometimes…sometimes Aisako-sama would get this strange look in her eyes. It was something scary, but…happy…that lit up Aisako-sama's face, like it was her birthday, or Kiss-My-Ass. Whenever Aisako-sama got that Look, Machiko knew Machiko was going to learn something…strange.
"I'm not sure if any of it could actually work…but…I can theoretically think of like…at least thirteen ways to kill or injure someone with a sharpened spoon and a little chakra."
Machiko…Machiko wasn't sure what to think of those lessons. Sometimes, Machiko thought it was a little scary, how Aisako-sama got that far away look, only to come back with a strange light in her eyes, and a new way to hurt someone. But…sometimes…most of the time…Machiko…liked…it?
Machiko liked that it made Aisako-sama so happy. AND it gave Machiko lots to think about. All these strange ways that Aisako-sama could think of killing someone…if Machiko wanted to protect Aisako-sama, as Sora-sama had asked her...Machiko could use some of it…right?
Even more interesting though, was when Sora-sama asked Machiko what she'd learnt from Aisako-sama…he'd always get the same excited expression, but he would also look…hopeful? Or something like that.
She didn't like the boy Mommy and Daddy invited to their home. His father ran a rival trading company. Machiko's Mommy and Daddy were hoping that if Machiko became the boy's friend, Machiko's Daddy could talk to his father more often, and a partnership could be made. Machiko had also heard her Mommy tell Daddy that Machiko and the boy would have pretty babies.
But Machiko didn't like him.
So Machiko scared him away.
Her parents had been very mad at Machiko for playing with knives. And for scaring off the boy. So, so very mad. Machiko had never seen them so angry. Daddy's face turned red and he left the house, slamming the door so hard that the house shook. He left Machiko home alone with Mommy.
Her Mommy wasn't the same as she used to be. Machiko could see it in her. Could see the way her Mommy had to put more makeup on to hide the wrinkles. Could see it in the way she drank more of the 'special juice' Machiko wasn't allowed to have (Machiko knew what it was. Machiko wasn't stupid. Aisako-sama liked that stuff too. Liked the way it made her feel. Aisako said it made her forget things she didn't want to think about. It made her sleepy too, and made it easier to laugh. These all sounded like good things to Machiko...but Machiko was forbidden by Aisako-sama from drinking it, saying that it was bad for little girls). Machiko's Mommy wasn't as beautiful anymore. Inside and outside, Mommy was proving to be a tarnished piece of garbage…not the golden idol Machiko once thought Machiko's Mommy was.
After Daddy had left, Machiko's mother hit Machiko with a decorative porcelain mug. Machiko knew what the mug was made out of, because Satoru had told Machiko when he pulled the pieces out of her face. Machiko made The Relative- Satoru- promise not to tell Aisako-sama about the porcelain.
Then Machiko avoided Aisako-sama for the week it took for the cuts to heal.
It was almost time for the next Academy year to begin, and Machiko was going crazy.
No matter how much Machiko asked and begged and manipulated, she couldn't get her parents to let Machiko join. It wasn't fair.
"Machiko wants to go to the academy."
"You will. No worries. They may be your parents, but legally, they can't do anything if you sign yourself up for the academy...the only problem is you'd have to be eight, and stay in the academy until you're twelve...but that'd only be four years of practice before then I think? It's a stupid system, but more civilian-borns graduate at that age than shinobi-born students."
"What about the civilians in your class?"
"Their parents signed them up, or they're orphans."
"Orphans?"
The word sent a horrible, horrible thought into Machiko's mind. Surely she shouldn't.
"Come on Machiko, you know what an orphan is. They don't have any parents or guardians. Because they live in orphanages, which are funded by the village, they're automatically signed up for the academy. They can drop out, but only after four years. Some of them avoid the academy all together by signing for apprenticeships with civilian companies, but it can take a bit of work to get one."
The thought persisted as Aisako-sama kept talking. Machiko knew that Aisako-sama was trying not to word it into an order…because she knew Machiko would do anything she told Machiko to do…so she was leaving the option to Machiko…or at least planting the idea in Machiko's head so Aisako-sama could suggest it later and Machiko would be open to it.
She wasn't going to order Machiko to do something like that. Yet. But if Aisako-sama found out that Machiko's Mommy kept hurting Machiko…
Every time Aisako-sama ordered Machiko, it was for Machiko's own good. 'Cut your hair', so it wouldn't be caught on anything and no one could grab it. 'Don't wear pink', because it's a horrible colour to try and blend in…makes Machiko a bigger target.
Would it really be that surprising if Aisako-sama asked Machiko to murder Machiko's parents if they were hurting Machiko?
Rage bubbled up in Machiko, hot and painful as she listened to what her parents were saying to their friends. Machiko should have been used to it…but as Machiko sat at the top of the stairs, listening to them speak poorly about Aisako-sama with their friends…
The bad thought was back.
Machiko had been trying not to think about it for days now. She'd done everything Machiko could do to not think about it. Machiko had visited Aisako-sama, spoke to Sora-san, played with the Loved Ones (Machiko had even gone on a Hunt with them to avenge Aisako-sama after some bitch tried to hurt Aisako-sama again). Gone to the library and read so many books it hurt to open her eyes…
"I don't want to be the bearer of bad news…but you know people in the village have seen Machiko-chan near the monster, right?" 'Aunty' Tsubaki asked.
Machiko's Mommy snarled, "Ugh. Don't bring that disgusting little monster up. I've had a hard enough time trying to rein Machiko in without that thing influencing her."
"We've brought our complaints to the council, but they still refuse to do anything. Apparently the 'majority' think it's an actual child." Tsubaki tutted, "I mean I sometimes doubt Saki is a human…how any spawn of hers could be…"
"We've been telling the council to do something about it since the day it came back to life," Machiko's father chimed in. He and 'Uncle' Takashi didn't speak very often, since Machiko's mother and Tsubaki had them so whipped.
"Not to mention the Demon the Kazekage lets run around our village. You'd think after the first time he destroyed the village he'd learn his lesson and put the thing down."
"Plus the Demon has ANBU guards, so it isn't like we can do anything about it- no like the Monster. She's not guarded."
That's what they thought. The Loved Ones and Machiko were always watching.
And listening, as it were.
Machiko was not pleased in the least by what was being said by the four 'upstanding citizens' below.
"Wellllll….there have been those attacks. Someone's taking out her attackers."
"That's because they aren't being subtle about it. They just up and attack the Monster in broad daylight…and of course the council has to protect their little pet."
"So you think if someone was subtle about it…they could get rid of her and get away with it?" Something in Uncle's voice told Machiko he didn't think it was a good idea. Almost like he, at least, disapproved.
"Exactly." The same could not be said for Aunty. Machiko could hear the bloodlust.
Machiko gave up trying to ignore the bad thought as the adults below continued to plot.
"So, you overheard your parents and their friends plotting to kill Aisako-chan?" Sora-sama asked Machiko, a troubled look on his face. Machiko nodded eagerly.
Sora-sama was silent as he and Machiko sat in the corner of the Temple's main room. Around them, Machiko watched as Loved Ones snacked on good food, kids ran around weaving in between the adults, and the chosen Speaker of the meeting extolled on the glory that is Aisako-sama.
If any of them learned what Machiko's parents had been saying…Machiko wouldn't have to worry about them hurting Aisako-sama anymore…
"Sora-sama…Machiko has been thinking…" Machiko began, not sure how to tell Sora-sama what Machiko was thinking. Machiko wanted to know if Sora-sama thought it was a good idea…or would he get mad at Machiko for suggesting murder? Familicide?
"Go ahead, Machiko-chan," Sora-sama gave Machiko an encouraging smile, and he angled himself to face her more in his chair. Machiko pulled her knees up to her chest.
"Machiko wants to be a kunoichi…but Machiko's parents won't let her…so Machiko can't protect Aisako-sama…and Machiko's parents hurt Machiko…And now they want to hurt Aisako-sama too…" Machiko took a deep breathe, "Aisako-sama told Machiko that orphans get sent to the Academy right away…"
Sora-sama's eyes lit up with understanding. And maybe pride? Machiko wasn't good at reading people like Aisako-sama was. Which was funny, because Machiko knew that sometimes Aisako-sama's emotions didn't work right, and she didn't understand how she was feeling…or understand why other people felt the way they did.
A hand rubbed Machiko's back, trying to comfort Machiko, "It's okay Machiko-chan. I understand what you're saying."
"Aisako-sama didn't order Machiko to do it…only suggested it…but Machiko thinks maybe Machiko should…Machiko's parents are dangerous…bad people."
"Ah…and you wanted to know what I thought about it?"
"Yes?"
Sora-sama seemed to test the words in his mind, taking a long moment before he spoke. Machiko knew this was a challenge for his own morals. While he had no qualms with killing them…it was the suggestion that Machiko would do it. Of course…he couldn't order his men to do it. If he did, there was always the chance someone would find out…if they were murdered (by a council member) to protect Aisako-sama…the others like them would try to get revenge, either on Aisako-sama, or on Sora-sama.
If it were a terrible accident, and the poor, beaten Machiko was the only survivor…
But Sora-sama was a good man. Sora-sama did many bad things, true…but he'd never ask a child to do them. Not unless the child understood the full magnitude of the action.
"I think…that if we want to protect Aisako-sama…some sacrifices will be made…but I can't ask you to do it, Machiko-chan. Not now. Maybe…later on, if they continue to pose a threat, it will become unavoidable."
He said this…but Machiko was not stupid. Machiko had seen his pride, and the understanding earlier. Machiko even understood from what he'd just said…he wouldn't force her to do it, and neither would Aisako-sama…
But they both wanted her to.
Machiko wanted to do it.
They hurt Machiko. Wanted to force Machiko to be someone she wasn't…wanted to control Machiko. Wanted to kill Machiko's only friend. The only person who made Machiko feel important. Aisako-sama never hit Machiko. Accepted Machiko…Aisako-sama made Machiko stronger. Aisako-sama even tried to protect Machiko from the villagers…tried to save her reputation and tried to scare Machiko away…even when Aisako-sama was hurt and in the hospital…she was caring for Machiko.
If Machiko left those… alive…
Machiko wanted to do it. Machiko had to do it. Absolutely had to. I had to.
And there you have it, folks. the first half of Machiko's POV...the second half will be out after some editing and touch ups?
After seeing how long this ended up...I think any more chapters from Machiko's POV are gonna go into their own fic...because there's still SO SO MUCH I wanted to write for this...
I tried to show you some little details about Machiko that don't really get discussed in the main POV of the fic, without making the chapter any longer than it is...while still including Machiko's POV on a lot of events that took place.
1. Machiko's a little smarty-pants. She doesn't really show it off, and part of that's her being smart and sneaky-like so people underestimate her...and the rest is just Machiko being Machiko. She understands that people around her are trying to manipulate her, but for the most part she is happy to be molded if it means she can help Aisako better
2. Sora approached Machiko much earlier than he approached Ai, and began setting up Machiko as Ai's bodyguard. It's not really mentioned in this chapter much, but when Machiko isn't at home pretending to be a civilian, or with Ai, she's with Sora. Sora used Machiko's young age and curiosity about Aisako to influence her into becoming quite devoted to the Loved Child. If I do end up giving Machiko her own fic (probs a collection of short oneshots and such) there are likely be a few chaptersthat will be about Machiko and Sora spending time together.
3. Machiko wasn't just hit by her mother the one time Ai is aware of. It was something that happened repeatedly, and her father was aware of what was happening, but he was too well cowed by his wife to lift a finger to stop it. Coupled with her parents' constant rejection of everything that made Machiko...Machiko...resentment began to brew. The whole...murdering her parents thing was a long-time coming. Sora's encouragement to follow out Ai's suggestion, the fact that Aisako was the one to make the suggestion, and Machiko's lack of...stability... certainly helped her make up her mind. Ai and Sora seem to take on the roles as Machiko's Important People, ranking them over her parents who were steadily lowering their rank.
Still more to come...eventually.
