As Light, Fennix, and Lilac left the trial upon taking the Entercard, they saw Mawile on the other side of the room walking in their direction. "Ah, you three. Good timing," Mawile said as she saw them. "We're just about to make contact with the two Dungeon Researchers. I thought I'd come by to see if you three were done yet."
Light chuckled. "Yeah, we're done alright. You've got some good timing yourself."
As Mawile and the other three got close to each other, Mawile noticed the bruising and other injuries on the three children. "Hmm…it seems you have been through an ordeal. Though you also have the aura of strength somehow. It seems whatever you went through made you stronger."
Lilac nodded. "You can certainly say that."
Mawile turned around. "You'll have to tell me about it later. For now, we shouldn't keep Espeon and Umbreon waiting."
Mawile walked off and the three children followed behind her. They once again walked through the dark hallways of the greater tomb until they walked through the light and back out into the desert. Once they got out, they saw that the skies were lit orange as the sun was once again about to set.
"Wow, those two trials must've taken us a reaaaaly long time," Fennix exclaimed.
"It was mid-morning when we came out here to speak to Dedenne," Mawile said. "You three have been gone for a long time."
Light sighed. "Yeah, I can imagine all things considering. But that's beside the point. Where is the Chief?"
"I am over here!" Ampharos called from the distance.
Ampharos staggered along from the other side of the building. "I apologize. I was merely going for a quick stroll and…got a little lost." Ampharos shook his head and posed. "But I have good news. Our friends are ready to speak with us!"
Lilac stepped forward. "So we're about to speak with Espeon and Umbreon."
Ampharos nodded. "My dear Mawile, if you would assist me with your gadget."
Mawile nodded and grabbed her own Expedition Gadget out. Ampharos and Mawile proceeded to put their gadgets side-by-side on the sand floor. Light, Fennix, and Lilac all gathered around as Mawile and Ampharos step back. There, the devices hummed for a few seconds before a light shown from them. The light quickly formed two shapes, the shape of an espeon and an umbreon. They were both a light-blue color and there were slight breaks in the light, but the Pokémon were still there.
"I-is this thing on?" the espeon asked.
"Yes, we can hear and see you," Mawile answered. "Can you see and hear us?"
"Loud and clear," the umbreon answered. "You must be the archeologist, Mawile. Espeon has read much of your works."
"Umbreon," Espeon groaned as she tried to hide a slight blush from her partner's teasing.
"Very well, let's get down to business," Ampharos said. "I assume Archen made sure to tell you why we were asking for you?"
Umbreon nodded. "Yes. We heard you guys found something similar to an Entercard during an excavation, right? And you wanted to talk to us about that?"
"That would be correct," Mawile answered. "I apologize in advance if this is sensitive information, and let me assure you that we are not assuming you stole someone else's idea, but I must ask you. Where and how did you learn of the idea of using Entercards to manipulate dungeons?"
Neither Espeon's and Umbreon's smiles disappeared, and it didn't seem that they were mad or anything. Rather, they were thoughtful as Mawile posed the question. And it was a few seconds later when Espeon finally answered.
"That's not too sensitive of a topic. And no, we don't think your accusing us of anything. In fact, the idea that we could manipulate ley lines like we do, and the Entercards themselves, have been a topic among us Dungeon Researchers for the longest time. It was always theorized it was possible, Legendary Pokémon do it all the time. We're just the first ones to have crafted the Entercards we have now. Which reminds me. Would you mind showing us the cards you obtained from the dungeon?"
Mawile nodded and brought out the two cards she had. "The image quality of the Expedition Gadgets might make it difficult, but take a look here."
Mawile brought the cards as close to Espeon and Umbreon as she could, and the two looked closely at the card. "Hmm…yeah I don't think the image quality is a problem," Espeon mused. "In fact, from these cards, I can see the truth. Umbreon, you see what I see, don't you?"
Umbreon nodded. "Yeah, it's pretty clear, Espeon."
"What do you see?" Mawile asked as she placed the cards back in her bag.
"Those cards you guys have are not the Entercards we have," Espeon said with a smile. "Our image quality might be a little off but let me show you ours."
Espeon used Psychic to levitate two cards within the image the Expedition Gadget made. The tint made it impossible to tell if it has the same black color, but they could still clearly see the runes written on the card. They were both of the sun, but one had a hollow center and wavy rays while the other had a filled in core and straight triangle rays. But that wasn't the most important part, something Lilac noticed pretty soon.
However, Fennix didn't. "I don't…get it. What's so different about these cards? I mean, the suns look a little different, but is that seriously it?"
Lilac shook her head. "It's the circular runes surrounding the suns, isn't it? There seems to be two circles surrounding the sun that make a sort of portal shape. Our cards don't have those runes."
Umbreon smiled. "Your pretty observant, kid. I like that. Yeah, your right. Our cards have a Magnagate portal symbol on them, while your cards don't. And that makes all the difference, all things considering."
Espeon continued from there. "We'll have to discuss the details later, but it's clear that your Entecards and our Entercards are not the same. And yes, Fennekin, those runes do make all the difference. Especially considering the circumstances."
"The dungeons created by these cards were brought about by a portal of light and they were used to make a smaller space a vast dungeon," Mawile mentioned. "Meanwhile, if I am right, your cards are used to cross vast distances in only one dungeon."
"Technically speaking, it's very possible for us to use these Entercards to create a permanent dungeon in whatever location we'd want," Umbreon said. His face fell into a grave expression. "We don't, because we don't need to, but that is possible with these cards. Problem is, prolonged lay line manipulation is dangerous. The lay lines ebb and flow naturally across this world, creating and deconstructing dungeons at a whim. It's how this world has worked naturally. To distort that is an exceedingly dangerous move. One that could cost the manipulator their own life."
"So this entire tomb is standing on a precarious position?!" Light yelled.
Espeon's face was also grave. "Many Dungeon Researchers have either disappeared or lost their lives in the pursuit of making these Entercards. It's part of the reason why we haven't published any books on it. There are many dangers of doing it. If this tomb was as complete as it is, I suppose whoever made it was probably fine, but whoever built the tomb stood on very dangerous ground."
"Let's move on to less depressing topics," Mawile said. "The dungeons that were created seem to be illusions of past events. As an example, the first area created by the card wasn't a Mystery Dungeon at all, but rather an illusion of a town long since gone. The illusion itself wasn't perfect, as it was covered in a thick fog, but it was certainly a town with most Pokémon not being ferals. Is that also possible?"
Espeon and Umbreon had their mouths open and stunned looks on their faces at those words. They were completely silent for a while now, as if Mawile spoke of some sort of revelation. Whatever it was, it certainly caused them pause.
"Y-you're saying…your cards have the power to create Mysteriosity?" Umbreon eventually stuttered out.
"Mysteriosity?" Light asked.
Mawile, meanwhile, had the smile of realization. "You're talking about that phenomena from three years ago in the late winter?"
Lilac's and Fennix's eyes both widened at those words. Light looked between both his own allies and the two Dungeon Researchers, his head tilted in confusion. Especially as this was something even Fennix understood, leaving him as the only one in the dark.
"What…exactly is going on?" Light asked. "What are you all talking about?"
Umbreon and Espeon both looked at Light as if he was crazy. "What do you mean, what are you talking about?" Umbreon asked. "It only happened a couple of years ago. Did you forget about it already?"
"Let's just say…Light has a very good reason for not knowing what happened," Ampharos explained. "However, due to it being of personal nature, I'd rather we not discuss it here."
Lilac turned to Light and began explaining. "Basically, three years ago, almost four, during the late winter, we were all told not to go into any Mystery Dungeon for the time being. The village was basically closed off and we weren't allowed to go into any dungeons during school either. The adults were really serious about all of this and they kept a close eye on all of us. Fennix especially."
"Yeah, and it was really annoying!" Fennix stomped. "They closed the gates and wouldn't let us go anywhere fun. Blamed it on some sort of thing happening in the dungeons. They never told us what was happening, though!"
"I managed to sneak into a dungeon to explore it, but nothing in particular happened to me," Lilac shrugged, nonchalant in her confession. "I didn't explore any dungeons after that, figuring the adults were just being paranoid."
"What?!" Fennix asked. "How did you manage to escape?"
Lilac just waved it off with a shrug. "Anyways, was that Mysteriosity thing what the adults were all paranoid about?"
"Yes, it was," Espeon answered. "For a while, a strange event was happening in Mystery Dungeons. Randomly, when walking through dungeons, you could potentially be warped to an entirely different dungeon altogether. Some of those had similar layouts but different Pokémon, while others were entirely different dungeons. While those dungeons shifts were only temporary, and you would leave the same place you would normally leave the dungeon you entered, you can imagine the danger posed from a random Pokémon walking through a dungeon they're used to only to be suddenly be transported to a dungeon they're unprepared for. Imagine going berry collecting in a forest only to be transported to a desert, that sort of thing."
Light nodded, his mouth agape from the idea. "Yeah…I can see why all the adults would keep the kids away from dungeons at that point."
"Though as your Espurr friend said, it didn't happen all the time," Umbreon continued. "Some dungeons were full of the Mysteriosity effect, while some dungeons were completely calm. It was great for our research, but bad for travelers."
"When we mentioned that your cards can create Mysteriosity, that's because another effect of Mysteriosity is that you can be warped to dungeons that don't even exist anymore," Espeon explained. "That your cards can take you to past areas that don't exist anymore must be due to a similar reason. Which is rather incredible, as despite all our research into Mysteriosity, we were never able to figure out how it worked."
"So, Puriah managed to do all that," Mawile mused. She was lost in thought for a few seconds before turning her attention back towards the Dungeon Researchers. "Thank you, Espeon, Umbreon. Those were all the questions I had for you regarding our current Expedition."
"No problem," Espeon responded calmly and with a warm smile. "We're happy to help."
Umbreon, meanwhile, looked at Mawile with a longing, excited look, his eyes almost gleaming. "M-Mawile. I…know this is a lot to ask from you but…would you mind telling us what ruin you're exploring so we can examine those cards."
Espeon rolled her eyes while giving a soft chuckle. "You're really that interested in those cards, aren't you?"
Umbreon turned his head towards Espeon and nodded. "Aren't you? Cards with the power of Mysteriosity? If we had those, it'd help us understand the nature of Mystery Dungeons immensely!"
"I am more than willing to tell you of the location, however with a stipulation and a warning," Mawile said, turning the two researchers' gazes back towards her. "First, I must ask you to let us finish our excavation. Even if you are careful, I'd rather not have another outside force enter this tomb until we have fully explored it and discovered all of its secrets."
Espeon nodded. "Understandable. And your warning?"
Mawile's face turned grave. "There are constant rumors about Pokémon who enter the tomb disappearing. We have been fine so far, but we still don't know what forces in this tomb caused such a mass disappearance; we only have speculation so far. And if what you've talked about is true, that leads to more possibilities as to how these Pokémon disappeared."
"Between thousands of years of lay line manipulation along with Mysteriosity, it's honestly a miracle that the place didn't collapse in on itself," Espeon said. "We'll be careful, we promise."
Lilac raised her paw into the air before they left. "Actually, I have one question before you go. Is it possible to manipulate the lay lines even after the Entercards are already in use?"
Everyone, including Lilac's allies, all looked at her with confusion evident on their faces. "Espurr, what are you getting at?" Light asked.
"The answer is that it's theoretically possible," Espeon eventually answered. "If dungeons can be created, they should also be able to be manipulated even after the fact. However, I can't imagine how that would be possible. I'm sorry I'm not very helpful on the subject. One would have to manipulate the lay lines directly, which is theoretically impossible for all but a Legendary Pokémon on the level of Palkia."
Lilac bowed. "No, I understand. Thank you for answering my question regardless."
"It's no problem," Umbreon said with a smile. "We look forward to hearing about your findings later. I'm sure Espeon will be nose deep into whatever book you read about it."
Espeon glared at Umbreon. "You know, you could learn a thing or two from history."
Mawile nodded. "Very well, we will discuss the location of this tomb later. Also, give our regards to Archen when your done for setting this up."
Umbreon nodded. "We'll do. See you."
"Goodbye all," Espeon also responded before the image of the two of them faded and the humming noise coming from the Expedition Gadget faded as well. When they were done, Ampharos and Mawile grabbed their respective gadgets before joining the group.
"So…am I the only one who's now really worried about exploring this place?" Light asked once Ampharos and Mawile rejoined the group.
"Of course you are," Fennix answered, smile on her face.
Mawile stared at the tomb. "Hmm…if Espeon and Umbreon are right, then this dungeon would seem to be in a very precarious position. However, as I told you before, we mapped out most of the tomb already, save for the areas we have been exploring. The only Mystery Dungeons are created by the Entercards. But I don't believe they are lying either."
"…I don't think there's anything we have to fear," Lilac assured after a moment's hesitation. Everyone turned their attention to her.
"Do you know something?" Light asked.
Lilac shook her head. "Not 'know' exactly, but I've been wondering a few things. I have an idea, there's just a couple of things I'm not completely clear on. Just one or two things that don't make sense, yet."
Mawile's gaze lingered on Lilac for a few seconds. "I imagine you're on the same track as I am, aren't you?"
Fennix's eyes darted between Mawile and Lilac. "What are you two talking about?"
"Something they're not entirely sure about yet, I imagine," Ampharos said. "Well, well, well, I'm sure you'll tell us once you figure it out. Until then, I'll trust your judgement young Espurr." Ampharos stepped towards the entrance of the tomb. "One more trial to go. Let's finish this Expedition strong, crew!"
"Yes sir!"
