Chapter 6: Surprise, surprise... (part 2)
James opened it, and as he read his father's letter, his expression changed from mischeif to outrage.
"WHAT?" he bellowed at the letter. "That's impossible! Surely Dad wouldn't, couldn't..."
"Did adopt Krysta into the family, yah," Albus finished. James looked mortified.
"DON'T SAY THAT OUT LOUD!" he yelled, as first years started coming out of their dorms.
"DAD ADOPTED KRYSTA!" Albus yelled as loud as he could. Krysta wanted to shrink so James wouldn't see her.
"This has to be a joke," James ranted, ignoring Albus comepletly, though everyone was staring surprisedly at the three now.
"It-It's not," Krysta said in a small, terrified voice.
"You stay out of this, mongrel!"
Krysta looked like she wanted to disapear on the spot, right there. She suddenly broke into horrible, fearful sobs. "No," she said. "Don't- Please!"
"I'LL SAY WHAT I WANT!" James yelled at her, then started ranting again, "I can't believe this," he said over Krysta's sobs. Albus was furious. He looked back at Krysta, was instantly sure of what he was going to do, and threw himself at his brother. Within seconds he had knocked him onto the ground and they were kicking and punching and scratching at each other.
"Someone get Professor Longbottom!" someone yelled over the yelps of James and Albus and Krysta's sobs. She ran upstairs to her dormitory, sobbing all the way. Seconds later, Professor Longbottom apeared in the Common Room. He shot a sheilding charm in between them, blowing them apart. Albus looked at him. He looked furious.
"Fighting in your own house! I would never have expected it of either of you! Your father will be ashamed. Potter, Potter, get up and follow me. Lance, you'd better come too, as a witness."
They followed Professor Longbottom out of the common room, not speaking. Albus and James glared at each other. Tanner Lance was nervous. He had been to James's house before and met Albus; and he rather agreed with his point. James had had no good reason to attack that little first year like that, though he was nervous because he didn't want it to cost him his and James's friendship.
"Professor, do I have to witness?" he asked. James gave him a hopefull look, as if he wanted Tanner to lie for him. Well, Tanner was much too Lupin-ish to even think of that. But he liked having friends...
"Yes, Tanner, and I warn you to tell the truth. I will know if you don't."
"Yes, sir," Tanner said weakly.
They were led into Professor Longbottom's office, all three of them quiet and nervous.
"Albus, let's hear your story first," the Professor said.
Albus looked at him "I was sitting in the common room with Krysta, and we were talking about how my Dad adopted her, and then James walked in with the letter Dad sent him about it. He opened it and read it, see, and he couldn't believe that Dad had done that, and was incoherent, so I finished his sentence for him and he yelled at me for saying out loud that Dad adopted Krysta. Krysta told him it was not a joke, that it was true, and he called her a mongrel and she started crying. She told him to stop, but then he insulted her further and she ran up to her dorm crying more than Lily did when she was 3 and broke her arm. So then I was really mad... and I sort of jumped him"
He rushed through the story as fast as possible, not leaving anything out. Professor Longbottom looked at him and shook his head.
"You may go for the moment and get Miss Riddle to the Hospital Wing for a calming potion. She's been through a lot, from the letter Harry sent me. James might've set her off. You are to come right back, " he told Albus. Albus nodded and dashed away.
Albus ran. He ran as fast as he could.
He was sure he might be too late, that Krysta was going to stay in her dormitory. She might never come out after what James said to her. Hoping someone might be out in the Common Room that could help him get her, he rushed to the Gryffindor Common room.
Of course he did not expect to see Rose Weasley on the way.
"Albus?" she said, startled. "I was just looking for the bathrooms..."
"Rosie," Albus said, panting. "Thank goodness. Did you get a letter from my parents or yours?"
"The letter that said we were adopting Krysta Elfrida Riddle into the family?"
"Yes, that. James got it... We got into a huge fight and Krysta ended up crying her way into her dormintory. I need you to help me get her out... Professor Longbottom sent me to take her to the hospital wing."
"Albus! I can't get into the Gryffindor Common Room!"
Albus frowned. "I just need you to get her to the hospital wing. Wait oustide for me."
Rosie rolled her eyes. "Aren't you supposed to do that?"
He looked at her. "Please?"
Sighing, Rosie followed him, panting slightly(he was still going pretty fast), as he led her to the common room.
As soon as they reached the Fat Lady, Albus huffed "SNICKERDOODLE!"
The fat lady frowned at him as her portrait hole opened. "No need to be so loud..." he heard her mutter. Unconcerned, he ran as fast as he could to the edge of the stairs that led to Krysta's dormitory.
"KRYS!" he yelled. "HEY KRYS! COME ON OUT, KRYS, HE'S GONE!"
No answer. Then a girl walked out of the dormitory.
"She's busy. What do you want?" she said snobbily.
"Professor Longbottom sent me to take her to the hospital wing," Albus said, shrinking under her glare. "I'm Albus."
Suddenly the girl's face brightened. "You are? The son of the boy who lived, Albus Severus Potter, born 3:30pm July 10th, 11 years old, enjoys swimming and Quidditch?"
Albus stared at her. "What?" he asked uncertainly.
The girl smiled so big that Albus shrank back more than he had when she glared. "OOOO I'm your biggest fan Alby, really, I have every magazine you're ever mentioned in and every book you're ever mentioned in and I think you're soooooo hott will you go out with me? Please oh please oh please I REALLY really like you please will you go out with me?"
Dumbstruck, Albus frowned at her. He would rather have run away as fast as he could, but he needed to get to Krysta. "Can you just get me Krysta please?" he asked, wondering what was wrong with her.
"Oh Alby, we don't need her! Let's start our own life together among the dragons or something..."
Albus wanted to scream at her, she was being so strange.
"If I say yes, will you go get Krys for me?" he said, deciding to end it as soon as he got the chance.
"Ooooh yes!" she squealed, running back into her dormitory.
"Albus wants to see you, Riddle," Albus heard her say sourly. "I bet he wants to get you back for what you did to his family."
Albus shook his head, as he heard Krysta reply acidly; "what do you care? And why are you so happy all of a sudden?"
"Oh, he's my one true love and we are going to run away together and live among the dragons. Why? Are you jelous, Squidy?"
Albus could just see Krysta raising her eyebrows in his head. "Oh, yes, very," she said sarcasticly, slamming the door.
"What's wrong?" she asked Albus, softening up a little. "Did I get you in trouble?"
"I don't know yet. And you didn't get me in trouble; I attacked him all my own. I was sent here to bring you to the Hospital wing, but I really needed to owl my dad, so I had Rosie come with me to bring you. And that girl was so weird... Who was she?"
Krysta sighed. "Edna Reastone. I don't know what her problem is."
"Agh... I had to pretend I was her girlfriend just to make her go get you... Oh, don't worry now," he said at the look on her face. "I said pretend, didn't I? She is NOT going to stay my girlfriend."
Krysta rolled her eyes as she climbed out the portrait hole. "You're too nice. I would have cursed her off the balcony."
"Ah, well, I didn't have that option," Albus said, and he certainly didn't. He didn't know any curses. "See you later then."
"Bye."
As soon as she was gone, Albus dashed away for a peice of parchment and a quil. When he had his materials, he began writing a letter of explanation to his father imediately.
Dad,
I don't have much time to write this, because Neville thinks I'm taking Krys to the hospital wing for a calming potion(Rose is doing it now), so this letter will be short.
James came into the common room and read your letter and started insulting Krys, and she ran up to her dorm in tears, and I got really mad at him about it, you see. I can't explain what came over me, and you have every right to punish me, but I tackled him. One of his friends got Neville, and he pulled us apart and took us to his classroom, and had us tell what happend. I told my story and he let me go get Krys and bring her to the hospital, but I met Rose on the way and she agreed to take her.
Also, a weird thing happend when I was trying to get Krysta. A girl came out of her dormitory, and at first she wa really rude to me, but then she said "You're Albus Severus Potter," and began listing off a ton of information about me, and said she wouldn't get Krys unless I agreed to go out with her. Of course, I HAD to, because I had to get Krys, and Aunt Hermione said "boys can't get into the girl's dorm so don't try". But how did she know all that?
Albus
Quick as he could, Albus folded the letter and suddenly wondered- where was he going to find an owl to send it. Suddenly a group of 7th-year girls came giggling through the doorway.
"HEY! Do any of you know where I can find an owl?" he yelled. They suddenly stopped giggling, looking at him. With a jolt, Albus noticed that they were all staring at him like he was from another plannet.
"Um, the owlry has owls you can use," one said. "I'll take you."
The rest of the girls stared at her in amazement. She blushed.
Albus couldn't believe this. What was wrong with these girls?
"Come on," she muttered, pulling him out of the common room by the wrist. She walked so fast toward the owlry that it was very hard for him to keep up with her.
When they reached it, she said, "Just choose one of the school owls to send it. And don't mind my friends, they're nuts. They think you and James are the most amazing people in the world because you're famous. I keep telling them you guys are years younger than us, but they must be reminded quite often..."
"Thanks," Albus said, and the girll left. He looked at the owls around him in awe. How could such a castle hold so many wonders? One of the owls flew down to him suddenly, and stuck out its leg. He tied the letter around it. "This is to my Dad, Ok?" he told it. The owl simply hooted and flew off, leaving Albus alone in the owl tower. He checked his watch nervously, and felt his stomach jolt. He had been gone from Professor Longbottom's office for 45 minutes.
Knowing Neville would not be happy with him, he dashed out and away as fast as he could towards the Professor's office once more.
"James Sirius Potter, what do you say happend?"
James straightend. He had been skirting out of trouble for years no matter what he did. It was everyday life for him; he knew Professor Longbottom would believe him if he acted well enough.
"I was walking with my friends, Professor, when our owl, Sherman, came flying at me with a letter from Dad. It said that they were adopting Krysta Riddle into our family. I was kind of jelous, I'll admit. But that was no reason for Albus to jump me..."
James shook his head as if horrified at the thought.
"I told Krysta to go away for the moment because I wanted to discuss it with Albus, but I guess she took it the wrong way, because she ran up to her dormitory crying. Anyway, Albus got defensive and attacked me.
"I think he likes her or something," James added.
Professor Longbottom sighed. "Mr. Lance, what about you? Where were you during all of this?"
Tanner stared at the floor. "I was next to James, sir."
"And what did you witness happening, Tanner?" Professor Longbottom asked him.
Tanner looked at James, who smiled encouragingly at him. Knowing with great displeasure what he would say next, he looked back at the Professor, and said, "It wasn't James' fault."
That was all he would say. Nothing else. He would simply refuse to answer in more detail if that was what the Professor wanted. However, Professor Longbottom did not question him further. He simply said "You may go," and waved them away, in the direction of Gryffindor Common Room. When they were out of earshot, James exclaimed,
"Thanks, mate! I thought for a second there you were going to tell him it was my fault..."
Tanner only nodded. He wished Professor Longbottom would've called him later, seprately and privately, so James wouldn't have known if he had witnessed against him. And it was all his fault, now, that an innocent little first year would likely get a howler in the morning...
A/N: I'll leave it here for now. This'll do.
This might be where I publish it.. Yeah.. Yeah I'll publish it now. As soon as I use the other computer downstairs to spell check it. XD
Which means... Tomorrow or tonight. :D
