With the door to hope open, everyone made it through just fine. Lilac, or whoever was controlling her at any rate, was the only one who had any difficulty moving, so Light held onto her and helped move her out through the door. When the light dissipated, they were all sent into another antechamber with another tablet and Entercard in it.
"Hmm…it seems that we've been taken to the same area we would have if we completed the trial," Mawile mused.
"Technically, no," the Pokémon controlling Lilac said. "If a Pokémon were to somehow manage to escape the Entercard version of the Voidlands, they would be taken back to the entrance of the dungeon. The idea is that the Pokémon would likely become scared enough by the Voidlands that they'd leave the tomb immediately. However, I decided to give you a boon and made it go straight here."
"I know you are aware of this, but there is much we have to discuss with you," Ampharos told her. "Even though I'm fairly sure that most of us already know who you are."
"…Is it bad that I don't?" Fennix asked.
"Yes, I know." The Pokémon stood a bit taller. "And I will do so, as well. But not now. There's one final tablet at the end of this tomb. I would like for you to read that tomb first. Once you see that, then I'll explain myself."
"Is it that one?" Fennix asked as she pointed towards the tablet.
The Pokémon shook her head. "No. This tablet merely speaks of what you already know." The Pokémon closed her eyes. "'Among the many moments I spent with Light, one moment stood out more than any. The decision to face off against Dark Matter's Cryogonal minion in the Glacier Palace instead of rescuing the Pokémon trapped without oxygen. It was a strange decision, one I still have trouble understanding why he chose that path. It told me one thing, at the very least. As much as I thought I knew Light, there was still much more I didn't know.
"I never thought about it before, but Light had a sadness in his eyes that he often masked with a smile. There was a loneliness in Light that he hid with his kindness. When I think on those things, I regret that I didn't press forward and attempt to get to know him better. It is the one regret that I'll carry with me for the rest of my life. At least, I can leave this hope. I can build this legacy for him, to thank him for all he did.'"
The Pokémon opened her eyes up again. "That's what's written on it."
Fennix glanced at the tablet for a few seconds before glancing back at the Pokémon with wide eyes. "She's right! That's exactly what's written on there!"
"Well, I would hope so," the Pokémon shrugged. "In any case, this is the last area you need to go through. And the Entercard on the pedestal there is the final Entercard. With that, we can now proceed to the final chamber where 'Light' sleeps."
"Very well." Mawile walked to grab the final Entercard. Light glanced at it and saw that this Entercard had a red Y symbol on it in the shape of Yvaltal's wings.
"These Entercards are really strange," Light mused.
"I can't say I fully understand them either. However, I can tell you that the final card means 'Death.' Though not in a bad way, as you might think. Rather, it's supposed to be a symbol of a major change in the future. But that's beside the point. We should move towards the center tablet with the four cards."
Ampharos stepped forward and posed. "Very well. Then let's go."
So the crew all walked back into the center room where they all converged next to the first tablet in the dungeon. There, the four Entercards were placed onto the tablet. After placing them all, the tablet began to glow until the light washed over everyone in the room, blinding them. Once the light finally dimmed, they noticed a new entryway in between Puriah's and Clover's chambers. And above it, there were two constellations, one of Mew, and the other a vaguely humanoid shape.
"Those are…us," Light mumbled. "Mew…and me."
The Pokémon just nodded. "Let's go. It's not long now."
So the Pokémon guided them all through the center passageway until they finally reached one final room. This was a very circular room with an ornate golden pattern lining the walls. In the center there were two things. A golden sarcophagus along with one final tablet. And on the end of the wall there were two objects. A strange looplet-like object that had a pink crystal on the end, and what seemed to be a very large knife, one that Light was sure was larger than him.
While everyone was glancing around, Fennix focused on the tablet, which she got close to and began reading.
"'This is Light's final place of rest. At long last, this tomb is nearly complete. Light, I hope you rest in peace in this place I have prepared for you. After all you've gone through, after everything you've done for us, you deserve a peaceful rest. I have also given you both the weapon you used to fight and the Z-Looplet you used to empower us all. I will make sure these items stay safe with you.
"It has been a long and arduous process creating this tomb, creating the many chambers. I have spent much of my time away from home working on this place in mostly secret. I hope, wherever Xerneas has placed your soul, that you are looking down upon us all with a smile on your face. And I will ensure that you are not disturbed by anyone outside of those who call us allies or their descendants.
"I have but one more task to do before this tomb is complete. Once it is done, I plan to bring all of us here, so we can all send you off. One final reunion. So please, be at peace.'"
Fennix paused for a moment. "The tablet ends there."
"But that didn't happen," Light pointed out. "We know that at least Wartortle never really knew what happened to Mew and me. And nobody else probably knew either."
"Well, we know at least one Pokémon that knows," Ampharos said. He faced the espurr. "Isn't that right, Puriah?"
Puriah smiled. "Yes, I do."
Fennix quickly turned back to face the Espurr. "Puriah?! As in, our old friend Puriah? As in the braixen? B-but how…? You were alive thousands of years ago!"
"I want to know what happened to Lilac," Light said. "Why are you using her body?"
"I'll answer both those questions in a moment," Puriah began. "But first, I want to say one thing. Light…Mew, words cannot express how great it is to see you again. When I first noticed you two crawling through this tomb, I had no idea. I knew not what happened to Mew, but I was sure that Light was dead. So it's great to see you alive once again. Though I do have my own question."
Puriah walked towards the tomb and glanced at it. "I was visiting Clover at the Tree of Life one day. The two of you had been long gone by that point in time and I was feeling a little nostalgic. So I went to Clover to chat. It was on my way back through Primeval Forest that I found it. Lying under a tree with a smile on his face, I found Light."
"You found…me?" Light asked.
"At first, I thought you were sleeping peacefully. So I moved to wake you and then ask where you've been. But as I was trying to wake you, I realized that you weren't actually asleep. You had no pulse and you weren't breathing. I wasn't entirely sure what happened, but I knew the truth. You were dead."
"I…was dead?" Light repeated. "But I'm standing here right now! I…I swear I'm the same Light. S-so how?"
"Calm down, Light," Mawile interrupted. "As I mentioned before when you questioned this, I have an idea. Knowing that your body is in that sarcophagus confirms my thoughts." All eyes turned to her as she explained. "We know that Mew and Light reincarnated into the fennekin and pikachu we know today to stop Dark Matter once it returns.
"Ah yes, I was aware of that possibility myself," Puriah interrupted. "That's why sacred water from the Tree of Life was being set on top of a mountain in the Water Continent and a village was being formed to guard it. I believe the girl whose body I'm inhabiting is from that very same village, correct?"
Mawile answered with a nod. "In any case, once she temporarily regained her memories, Fennix described it specifically as Mew and Light sending their spirits over to the future. Notice how it was specifically their spirits, though. We have also met Mew, but he seems to have no recollection of the past. My hypothesis is that when Light and Mew sent their spirits to the future, that's all they did. They literally sent their spirits over while leaving their bodies behind. Another spirit was then given to inhabit Mew's body, which leads to the Mew we know today. But, whether it be because he is a human or because Mew's Mythical status allowed him special privilege, Light's body remained without a spirit, effectively rendering it dead in all areas that matter."
"So Light and I are basically the same?" Fennix asked. "We're both the spirits of others inside the body of Pokémon?"
"I can't claim I'm positive on that, but yes, that is the most likely scenario."
"It's an answer nevertheless," Puriah said. "Likely, it was done at the Tree of Life with Xerneas's help, which is why that's where I found Light's body. Still, I don't doubt that you are who you say you are. After all, you recognized Mew's ultimate move. No Pokémon living in this time should be able to do that. But you would be very familiar with it."
Light smiled. "Th-thanks, Puriah. But anyways, now that we've answered your question, would you mind…?"
Puriah smiled and nodded. "Answering yours. Very well." She closed her eyes and took a deep breath before speaking. "Upon finding your body, I began building a place to bury you. At one point in time, you made mention of how kings in your world were given burial sites that you called 'tombs.' I didn't get many details from you on how they worked, but I had enough to begin working on this place.
"As the tablet said, I did it mostly in secret. I had help from a few groups in the Golden Continent, but they mostly helped me build the structure of the place. I did not tell any of my old allies, though." Puriah opened her eyes and began clutching Lilac's arm. "We had grown…distant in the time after Dark Matter's defeat. I wanted to tell them, but that distance made me hesitant. So instead of telling them now, I decided to build the tomb first. In my mind, having it finished and bringing them all to there, I thought it would rekindle our friendship. And then perhaps us and our descendants could guard the tomb. I can't explain how much I regret making that decision."
"Considering Wartortle had no idea I was dead, I can imagine," Light said.
"That one more task I mentioned in the tablet was creating the dungeons that guard this place. As you were told by those two dungeon explorers, messing around with Lay Lines is dangerous. Likely even more so back in my time than it is now. But I wanted to make sure this dungeon was protected from intruders. Especially since Light's weapon and Z-Looplet were here. So I did my best. …And was killed by the results."
"K-killed?" Fennix repeated.
"Yes, sadly. The power was too much for me to handle and it cause a fierce shock to go through my system. Something more powerful than a thousand Thunderbolts. It was a hard time for me. I had failed to create the dungeons as intended and my life was at an end before I could tell anyone about the tomb. Desperate, I begged to Xerneas for a boon. And he heard me.
"Xerrneas could not give me my life back, since he must watch over the balance between light and death. However, Xerneas allowed my spirit to live on even after my body died, tied to this very tomb. With that, I was given mastery of the lay lines under this place and could control it. With that power, I could make the defenses for this tomb complete. Unfortunately, this meant I could not leave this tomb anymore. So I still could not leave and tell anybody else about this place."
"So, you're a spirit now?" Fennix asked.
Puriah nodded. "Essentially. I suppose the closest thing you might know of is the Voices of Life. But in any case, when you came into this tomb, I watched over you like I do all visitors to this tomb. With great suspicion. However, this girl, the espurr you call Lilac, I noticed something about her. I felt a kinship with her. We both share feelings of loneliness. Seeing that, and after you solved the first puzzle, I decided to try and inhabit within her body. I felt a desire to help her through her problem. And that's how I came to end up in my current position."
Puriah's eyes glowed for a few seconds, and when the glow stopped her posture changed to a much more casual pose. "That's why she changed the third trial for us. It was to help me out with my loneliness problem. Even if it was in a very difficult way." She smiled. "So I don't really mind."
"Lilac, are you back?" Light asked.
Lilac nodded. "It's not like I was ever out of control. Puriah can't control me without my consent. And it's really not difficult to push her back and regain control. So don't worry about me. I'm just letting her talk through me temporarily."
Lilac's eyes glowed again and her posture was once again stiffer and more formal. Light's eyes widened as he just realized that Lilac's stance was stiff since they were finished resting in the Voidlands.
"I apologize if I worried you," Puriah finally finished. "I never meant to. Rest assured that your friend is fine."
Mawile stepped forward. "I want to thank you as well for helping us through this tomb. I am an archeologist and the era you lived in happens to be my area of interest. If you don't mind, I would like to investigate this tomb further, now that the place is less…dangerous."
Puriah nodded. "I know now that you mean no harm. If you wish to continue your investigation, I will not stop you. Especially since now I can pass on the treasures of this tomb to those who deserve it." Using her psychic powers, Puriah grabbed the Looplet and knife from the back wall and levitated them towards Light. "These items are what you used to fight Dark Matter and its minions. They rightfully belong to you. So you may take them."
"Th-thanks, I guess," Light said.
Light took the handle of the blade and, upon seeing that, Puriah dropped the blade with her psychic power. Unfortunately, the blade was just as large as Light and weighed more than he did. So Light struggled to just lift the blade before crumbling down onto the ground, still desperately trying to lift it. Eventually, Mawile took pity on him, and she grasped the hit with her large maw.
"Th-thanks," Light groaned. "Heh, guess using that sword is out of the question, huh?"
"It wasn't all that effective on anyone but the weakest Pokémon," Puriah said. She had an amused smile on her face. "And you're a Pokémon now, so you can defend yourself just fine. So yes. You're best not using it."
"We'll hang it in your room in the society," Ampharos said. "That way you can keep it as an heirloom."
"Thanks." Light glanced at the strange Looplet next. "As for that…I've got something special in mind for that."
Puriah curiously glanced at Light for a while, but she eventually just shrugged, deciding not to press on it. She instead turned to the sarcophagus and placed her paw on it.
"To think, for all these thousands of years, I thought I was alone. Seeing you two again, has made me happier than you can possibly imagine. If I were not bound to this tomb, I would like to travel with you again. But sadly, my time is long gone. Instead I'll leave you to continue your lives. This time, living your lives in peace."
"It was nice meeting you too, Puriah!" Fennix called. "Unlike Light, I don't have any memories of my time as Mew. I don't know anything. So seeing you here, hearing your voice, it's like meeting an old friend! Even if you're a scary ghost now, I'm glad I met you!"
Puriah glanced back. "'Scary ghost?' I guess you still haven't gotten over that incident."
"Incident?" Light and Fennix both asked at the same time.
Puriah smiled and laughed. "Come back to visit again some other time. I'll be sure to tell you two more tales from your past. Perhaps I'll even let you live it again."
Light nodded. "We will. It was nice meeting you again. Puriah."
"Nice meeting you too. I'll…see you later." Puriah turned back to the tomb again and closed her eyes. Her posture eventually lessened, telling Light that Lilac was in control again. And she turned back to smile at everyone.
"Well guys, I'd say this Expedition is a success."
Light nodded. "Yeah, I'd say so too. Still, not gonna lie, it's a little strange." Light walked up to the sarcophagus and placed his paw on it. "It's so weird though. Knowing that my old body is lying right there. Even if I'm still the same Light, it still feels odd."
Fennix joined Light at his side and shrugged. "I mean, I chat with my old self on a regular basis, so it isn't too strange. Besides, it doesn't matter, does it? You're still Light, no matter what."
Light nodded. "Yeah, you're right." A glance towards Lilac told Light that she was feeling uncomfortable and left out once again. Seeing that, Light shifted the Z-Looplet in his paws before approaching her.
"Hey, Lilac?"
Lilac glanced at him. "Yeah?"
"I…know we've been over this, but I can't help you be a part of our pasts. It's sorta happened already. But now that I know, I can try and include you more. And…this is the first part."
With that, Light placed his Z-Looplet in Lilac's paws.
Lilac took a half-step back from surprise. "Y-your Looplet? Are you sure?"
Light nodded. "Sure, I'm sure. It's not like I even remember how to use it. And you were worried about how well you'd synergize with us and how well you'd be able to support with us. Well, once you figure out how this Looplet works, I'm sure that'll solve both those problems. Besides, consider it a promise. No matter what happens, you're my friend, Lilac. That's not going to change ever."
Lilac glanced between Light and the bracelet. She also glanced at Fennix, who was smiling and nodding. Staring at the bracelet once more, Lilac finally lifted it and placed it on her left arm. It took a bit of adjusting, as it was clearly made for arms larger than hers, but Lilac eventually managed to get it on there. Once placed, she glanced back at both Light and Fennix, who were both smiling at her.
"Not bad," Light said. "The crystal at the end kinda works with you."
"Pfft, like you would know," Fennix scoffed.
Light shrugged. "I think it looks good."
"Well, I think it's awesome either way." Fennix paused for a moment before glancing at Light with a mischievous smile. "Now where's my gift? I gave you these scarves, and I haven't gotten anything in return. I'll take your sword!"
"To be fair, you also haven't given me anything," Lilac responded. "I believe I require ample compensation from you, Fennix. So your sword is now my sword. And, as thanks for giving me the bracelet, I will give it back to Light. That way we're all even."
Light chuckled. "Works for me."
Fennix groaned and put on a façade of disappointment. "Oh man. Geez, this is how you treat the amazing reincarnation of Mew."
"Oh, don't play the Mew card on me. You get what you'll get when you get it. It's part of exploring." Light raised his paws and yawned. "Speaking of which, we should probably start heading back now. We've been away for a while."
Mawile nodded. "Indeed. Ampharos and I still have some investigating to do, but we'll take you back to the ruins of Kalah Port."
"That'll be great."
So the five Pokémon all began their walk across the long hallway, making their way out of the tomb. Despite the dark gloomy atmosphere once the left the central room of stars, Light felt just a little bit warmer leaving. And, a glance at his two friends, he noticed small smiles on their faces too, telling him that they were feeling better too.
Soon, though, they left the tomb, walking into the mid-afternoon sun that blazed across the dried lands. Light gave one more stretch, feeling the heat spread across his skin.
"Man, it'll be nice to get back home and take a nice long nap," Light said.
Lilac nodded. "Yeah. Hopefully Buizel didn't make too much of a mess of the place in our absence."
"Give our regards to Dedenne and tell her that we'll be a couple more weeks," Mawile said.
"And don't spend too long napping, my friends. After all, there's still plenty of Expeditions to be had." Ampharos stood in front of the group and posed. "There's always something new just around the corner."
Fennix nodded. "Yeah! And I already know what our next Expedition is."
"That island you guys went to Baram town to learn about, right?" Lilac asked. "Oh yeah, I forgot you guys haven't had the chance to explore that place yet."
Fennix shook her head. "No, not that. We've got more important things to focus on. Like finding Light's family!"
Fennix smiled and glanced at everyone with a sudden burst of energy. Meanwhile everyone just stared at her with open mouths that didn't speak a word. The silence passed over the entire group, which Fennix eventually noticed, the smile disappearing from her lips.
"What?"
"Finding my…what?" Light asked. He suddenly felt a chill crawl down his spine. "What do you mean?"
"Well duh. We were both brought into this world the same way. Puriah and Mawile said as much. Well, I was brought into the world as a kit and my Pops found me wrapped in those old Harmony Scarves. So you were probably brought in the world as a baby too and found by someone. So we need to find that Pokémon!"
Everyone was silent for a bit again. Light was stunned, floored, completely unable to say anything about that. So it was Mawile who instead took a deep breath and spoke.
"We were all under the impressing that Light was brought into this world at his current age. However…I won't lie. This is one of the more logical things you've suggested." Mawile faced Light. "Light, think for a few seconds. How likely is what she is saying to be true?"
Light tried calming himself down to answer the question. "I…the first thing I remember is waking up in a field and finding some water. When I glanced into the water, I noticed I turned into a pikachu. And I thought it was odd that Pokémon could talk. So I would have figured that I was just brought in. But…"
Lilac closed her eyes. "Being logical, if you were both brought into this world at the same time through the same method, it'd make more sense for you to both be brought in as babies rather than one as a kit and the other as a kid. I see why Fennix would come to this conclusion."
Light shook his head and began moving on. Everyone glanced at him, shocked for a few seconds, before they tried to follow him.
"Light?" Fennix asked.
Light shook his head once again before smiling at her. "Well, weren't we heading off? We should get going before it gets dark."
So Light continued on his way once again. The four other Pokémon stayed behind, all glancing amongst each other. There was an obvious tension in the air despite Light's attempts to smile.
"I suppose it goes without saying, but Light's smile was a lie," Lilac mentioned.
Ampharos chimed in, his face oddly serious. "Despite your maturity, you are still young. Espurr, you yourself know quite well the feelings Light as right now. To potentially have a family that you've long forgotten, especially as young of an age as you are, is a difficult weight to bear. Fennix, I'm sure you can imagine it as well, as you feel the same way about forgetting your old allies.
"For now, Light needs to handle this doubt and uncertainty in his own way. All we can do, for now, is support him."
Lilac and Fennix both glanced at each other before nodding. "We understand."
"Very well. In that case, we should catch up with him and begin our march back home."
Lilac and Fennix both nodded towards each other once again before they ran up to Light's side. Both of them began talking to him about casual things. Their plans, jokes about the future and the past, things like that. They avoided the previous subject for his sake. And Lilac was there, a part of it.
