What if Astrid actually got Hiccup a betrothal gift for him but pretends to say the others that she doesn't have one yet? My take on how Hiccup got the Deadly Nadder symbol in his flight suit in the events of HTTYD 2. A short one yet I kinda enjoyed playing around with that thought, so hope y'all like it!
Symbol of My Love
RTTE canon-verse, events within Sandbusted
Astrid woke up to the sound of Terrible Terrors singing on her rooftop and Stormfly playing with Toothless outside her hut. It was the sixth month after she and Hiccup announced their betrothal and she had to have a gift for her boyfriend. She knew that it had to be something Hiccup doesn't own yet or hasn't invented. Unfortunately for her, that list wasn't long. He invented countless things, from the flaming sword to the flight suit. And I thought it was hard for me to be impressed, well except Hiccup's inventions. she thought. As if on cue, Toothless and Stormfly raced inside the hut, knocking Astrid off her feet. She could hear Toothless' gummy laugh and her dragon's squawking.
"No running inside guys!" she scolded the dragon pair. Toothless sensed that Astrid wasn't feeling herself and rubbed his head against her right arm.
"I'm still looking for something to give to Hiccup, Toothless." the blonde sighed, scratching the Night Fury's chin. He purred in reply as if saying 'You're gonna find something that he'll surely love.'
"Alright, you two go chase each other's tails outside." she ushered the two dragons out of her hut. Afterwards, she caught an eye at her storage chests by her weapons closet. Hmm. Let's see if I can find something.
As she looked through one of her storage chests, she spotted something that resembled a medal. Astrid grabbed the said object; it was a symbol of the Deadly Nadder, Stormfly's race, painted in red and made out of iron. It looked like some sort of branding head; for Thor's sake, she didn't even know where it came from! My guess is this came from Johann on one of his visits here. He does bring weird and wonderful stuff around. She thought about turning it into a necklace by getting a small chain, but she had a gut feeling that Hiccup would give her a necklace as well.
Then she realized something; Hiccup's armor had a small red circle on his chest belt devoid of anything. She thought if giving the brand to Hiccup and putting it on that part of his armor as a symbol of their relationship was a pretty good idea. After all, the couple are better at showing their love for each other rather than saying it.
"What do you think girl?" Astrid asked Stormfly, who was preening her wings in front of the doorway. "Should I give this to Hiccup?"
The blue Nadder squawked in reply, as if saying 'That would work.' Just above her hut, Astrid could overhear Hiccup and Snotlout arguing about something when Fishlegs entered her hut.
"So, you've got a gift for Hiccup?" he asked.
Astrid turned around to face the stocky Viking. "Yes, yes I do." She showed him the symbol and was equally pleased with it after the blonde woman explained to Fishlegs what its intended use for.
"Well he'll obviously like that thing because you gave it to him." Fishlegs continued.
"You're damn right there Fishlegs. Come on, let's get some breakfast. I bet Hiccup cooked something over the top again." Astrid joined the blonde stocky Viking towards the Edge's clubhouse. Today, her boyfriend's on cooking duty and she can already smell his mutton stew brewing from the clubhouse.
Breakfast came and went as usual, with Hiccup's ramblings about Johann's T-mail he received a while ago, the twins and Snotlout bickering again, and Fishlegs getting some rocks for Meatlug. Knowing about the couple's betrothal, Tuffnut turned to Hiccup while Ruff turned to Astrid and asked the exact same question.
"Did you got each other a betrothal gift?" the twins asked in unison. Hiccup looked at Astrid, and vice versa; with Snotlout and Fishlegs watching the unfolding drama. There was an awkward silence from the six dragon riders, save for the Terrible Terrors flying overhead.
"Alright, enough talk gang. Let's saddle up and head to the Northern Markets where Johann wants us." Hiccup broke the silence and everyone else complied with his orders.
After the rescue mission from the Sandbuster, Astrid and Hiccup stood by a corner where they wouldn't be seen by the rest of the riders. She knew exactly what was about to happen with the two of them.
"This was my father's betrothal gift to my mother." Hiccup started, holding a necklace. It was a bronze pendant which had dragon runes etched on it held by a bronze chain. He then helped Astrid attach it on her neck, held together by a simple lock. She gazed at the gift her boyfriend-turned-fiancée gave to her.
"Astrid, you're a part of our family. You've always been and I hope you'll always be." He continued, his emerald orbs gazing lovingly at Astrid's sapphire ones. The blonde woman picked his gift from her pocket.
"I hope you like this little knick knack I found in my hut earlier." Astrid showed him the Deadly Nadder branding head before placing it in the void circle in his chest armor's belt. It had fit perfectly and Hiccup gazed in wonder at the new decoration on his armor. Why haven't I thought of putting a symbol there? He mentally ranted to himself.
"D..do you like it Hiccup? I just wanted everyone to know that as a symbol of my love for you." she stuttered. Hiccup pulled her in his embrace; his chest provided warmth and security for Astrid and she loved that feeling.
"No milady, I love it." he whispered, nuzzling the side of her neck. Astrid felt warm on the inside but she was still a bit insecure about Hiccup's reaction to her gift to him. Did he really appreciate it as it is? Or did he just said it to not hurt her feelings? She kept asking those questions, overthinking the possible scenarios. Breaking the awkward silence, Hiccup spoke up again.
"I always wondered what to put in that damned part anyway. Thank you milady." he gave her a kiss on the forehead.
"My lips are here, babe." Astrid said suggestively.
Hiccup chuckled, then pulled Astrid for another kiss on her lips. Their union was one step closer to being unbreakable yet it seemed like nothing the gods could throw at them can break that spark, that bond between Hiccup and Astrid. They stayed in that position for what felt like an eternity until they both had to pull out for air.
"So, you're my fiancee now right?" the blonde Viking asked.
"So it seems." Hiccup replied, "But I wouldn't mind if you still called me your boyfriend."
Astrid wrapped her arms around his neck, attacking his left cheek with kisses. "I love you so much babe."
"Love you more milady."
