Callie watched her father, looking for any hint of recollection on his face, but none showed.

"I'm afraid you're going to need to be more specific, Calliope"

"Ten years ago, Arizona left town without saying goodbye" Callie kept her voice measured, determined not to give any indication of the level of emotion that she felt, even at that simple statement.

"Yes, I recall. It was…unfortunate"

"That's one way to describe it. I certainly would have used stronger words at the time"

"You have always struggled to control your emotions, Calliope. That you reacted like you were…grieving…was perhaps not unexpected"

Her eyes narrowed "So you knew that I would be devastated?"

Carlos stared back at her "What do you mean?"

"Don't pretend that you don't know exactly what I'm talking about"

"Calliope" he said sternly "if you have something that you wish to say to me, I suggest that you just come out and say it"

She folded her arms, refusing to be intimidated by him "Fine. Tell me why Arizona left"

"I can't speak for Miss Robbins nor speculate about her reasoning"

"I'm not asking you to speculate Papa" Callie continued to press "I'm asking you for the personal knowledge that you have about what caused her to leave"

"I don't know what you're getting at Calliope, but I suggest you think carefully about how you're speaking to me right now"

At last it came. The first flicker across his face that indicated that he was deliberately concealing something. She remembered Arizona's words. You have the power.

"How high would you have gone?" she asked calmly.

"What?"

"Well you offered $300,000. If she'd countered with a million, would you have paid it? What exactly is the going rate for trying to prevent your daughter from being gay?"

"Calliope…"

"I need an answer Papa"

"There is no price too high for protecting my daughter" he hissed.

"And what about the price that I had to pay?"

Carlos looked confused "What do you mean?"

"You saw what I went through after she left. I was broken. And you said yourself, it was hardly unexpected. Forget protecting me, you went out of your way to cause a situation that would cause your daughter pain"

"But that's nothing compared to the lifetime of pain that she would have caused you if she'd stayed"

"And how do you know that Papa?! What makes you think she would have hurt me?"

"Women like that always do" he answered simply.

"Who knows, maybe she would have, or maybe I'd have broken her heart. Or maybe, just maybe, we could have been happy" Callie gesticulated wildly "But we never got the chance to find out, because Carlos Torres decided, as usual, that he knows better than everyone else"

"You don't understand Calliope. You were young, you were naïve, and you had been…blinded by this woman. And nothing that I could have said would have convinced you otherwise. You've always lept into everything based on emotions, and I've always had to be there to apply some rationality to your life"

"Ha!" she scoffed "I may be emotional, but isn't that what love is – an emotion?"

"You were eighteen years old, you had no idea what love was"

Callie shook her head in despair "Yes I was eighteen, Papa. It wasn't like I was talking about marrying Arizona! But she made me happy, and she cared about me. Surely, that's what any father would want for their daughter?"

"Not like that" he responded quietly.

"And what if Arizona had been a guy?"

"That's different and you know it"

"Is it? Tell me how exactly" Callie could feel her confidence growing every time she spoke, like there was no longer any need to hold back "Because other than the fact that what I was doing with Arizona couldn't get me pregnant, I'm not really sure I see what the difference is"

"I will not hear talk of such filth in my house!" Carlos yelled, his eyes raging.

"Why, it's what started this whole thing, isn't it? You found out I had sex with Arizona. But you would have been fine about it if she had been a guy. So let's stop all the pretences about protecting me, about my emotions, and talk about what this is really about. Your homophobia"

"It's a sin Calliope"

"Says who?" she challenged.

"God"

"Well I guess your God isn't the same as mine"

"Don't you dare…"

"No Papa. I'm not some little girl that you can force your beliefs on anymore. And did you ever stop for a second to consider that maybe this wasn't about Arizona at all?"

Carlos paused, seemingly genuinely confused by the question.

"You thought that by removing Arizona from my life, I'd somehow magically stop being attracted to women?" Callie continued.

"You married Eduardo. I'd say my instincts were correct"

"Papa…I'm bisexual. Always have been, always will be. So unless you plan on ensuring that every woman I meet leaves, you're fighting a losing battle"

"No" he whispered.

She stared at her father, and it was as though she could see every thought that was running through his head being played out across his face. In that moment, she realised the depth of his prejudices, and with that, the extent to which his understanding of reality had been contorted. The shock on his face at her last statement told her that he had never comprehended the possibility that his daughter was actually attracted to women. That it wasn't just a temporary phase, exclusive to her feelings for Arizona, that had passed as soon as the blonde had left. She could see him internally questioning himself, realising that contrary to his long-held belief, he was not always right.

"It doesn't matter anymore" he said quietly "what you may have felt in the past doesn't matter, you're married to Eduardo now"

"It matters Papa. It matters because this is about who I am. And yes, I married Eduardo, but let's not pretend that you didn't have a pretty big hand in that too? And being married to a man doesn't stop me being bisexual"

"Then I'm glad I never paid her a cent!" Carlos raged "Arizona Robbins got what was coming to her, and you…if you ever speak of this again, then you're no longer my daughter!"

"Papa?"

Carlos and Callie's heads span round to the doorway that led to the kitchen, eyes locking on Aria who stood there, the spare key to the side door that she had long owned still in her hand.

"Aria, I'm afraid this isn't a good time. Maybe you could come back later" Carlos spoke first.

"No!" Callie cut in forcefully "She stays. She's part of this family, and if you're so convinced that everything you've done is right, and for the good of your daughter, then you should have no problem with your other daughter being here while we discuss it"

"Aria, I'd like you to leave so that I can discuss this matter privately with Calliope" Carlos repeated.

Aria stood in the doorway, looking back and forth between her father and sister. Having only called in to ask to borrow some kitchen equipment from her mother for a dinner party she was hosting, she had no idea how to deal with the intense argument that she appeared to have found herself in the middle of.

"I…" she started, her eyes meeting Callie's "I think I'll stay"

Callie sighed in relief "So do you want to tell her the truth about what you did, Papa, or shall I?"

"I've said all I have to say on the matter" Carlos replied tersely.

Callie turned to look at her sister, who had a confused expression on her face.

"Whatever you two are arguing about…" Aria indicated the two of them "what does Arizona have to do with it?"

Callie took a deep breath, ignoring the threat in her father's eyes "Seeing as he's too much of a coward to tell you, I will. You remember how Arizona just disappeared ten years ago?"

"How could I forget? You were a mess for…well, for years" Aria replied honestly.

"Yeah well, the thing is…" Callie paused, another thought coming into her mind "What did you know about me and Arizona back then?"

Aria shrugged "I knew you guys were close, like…closer than the rest of us. Obviously I saw you guys kiss at my graduation party…" Seeing a furious Carlos about to interject, Aria held up a hand to signal to him to just let her continue "but I didn't really think anything of it because, you know, we kinda made you do it"

"Aria, what on earth are you saying?" Carlos seethed.

"Papa, calm down" Aria rolled her eyes "I'm talking about teenage parties, don't pretend you don't know the kind of things that go on. It's no big deal"

"So you…" her father narrowed his eyes at her "you encouraged this…this…sick behaviour"

"Chill out Papa, we're talking about two teenagers making out twelve years ago" "You won't get anywhere with that" Callie told her "but that might give a hint as to how he reacted to what happened after. Which…I assume you have some kind of inclination that there was more?"

"Sure" Aria shrugged "I mean, you were Callie and Arizona. Everyone kinda knew that you guys were more than friends. And then when Eliza saw you…" she looked at her father before choosing her words "making out at your graduation party, it kinda confirmed it"

"So Eliza told you about that?" Callie asked.

"Yeah, she told a bunch of us"

"And who did you tell?"

Aria frowned "No-one, I mean, it wasn't like it was a big surprise to me"

Callie looked between her father and sister before replying "Who else did she tell?"

"A bunch of people I guess" Aria shrugged "you know how much of a gossip she is. I mean, Eduardo was probably there…"

Callie turned to her father, narrowing her eyes "He came to you didn't he"

"Calliope, Eduardo has only ever wanted the best for you" Carlos protested.

"Sure" Callie replied sarcastically "this is about what was best for me, and not about him trying to get in my pants"

"Callie…" Aria started.

"Just wait" Callie cut in "Papa, I'm giving you one last chance to tell her what you did when you heard about me and Arizona from Eduardo"

"Calliope…" Carlos warned.

"I'm not scared of you, Papa. Not anymore" Callie turned to her sister, her new found confidence fuelling her "See, when Papa found out that Arizona and I were involved with each other, he decided that he had to put an end to that. Clearly, he thought that getting rid of her would 'cure me' of having feelings for women"

"Papa?" Aria turned to him, offering him a chance to defend himself.

Carlos remained stoic.

"He offered her money to leave" Callie continued "he got as high as $300,000 before he realised that she wouldn't take it, no matter how much he offered"

Aria's jaw dropped "$300,000?"

"Clearly everything has it's price" Callie responded sarcastically, looking at her father for some kind of reaction "but Arizona wasn't willing to be paid off. And so he went to Plan B"

"Plan…B?" Aria asked nervously, eyeing her father, whose own eyes had gone wide.

"What, you think I didn't know about that bit either Papa? You see" Callie turned back to her sister "when Arizona wouldn't take the money, Papa handed her over to Eduardo, to make sure she had no choice but to leave"

"But…Eduardo…you…" Aria struggled to put the pieces together.

"I know" Callie answered sadly "and believe me, there is a whole separate discussion to be had about that, but for now I'm interested in just how much Papa knew about what exactly Eduardo was going to do to make sure she left"

Carlos looked between his two daughters "He said he would make sure that woman left, that's all. I know he's always had your best interests at heart, Calliope"

Callie shook her head "Oh Papa. You want to know what it was that actually finally convinced her to leave? Do you have any clue as to what would actually make someone like Arizona walk away, considering money had no effect?"

Carlos gritted his teeth "I never asked questions. Yes, I assumed that that he might get a little physical, and by the fact that she was on the floor when I returned to them, I imagine that was in fact the case. But it was worth it to protect you"

"Papa?" Aria stared at him in horror, her own image of her father that she had built up over the years being gradually shattered.

"So, although I'm not sure you deserve it, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt right now and assume that you didn't actually know what was going to happen" Callie continued, staring straight into her father's eyes "but I think you should know that violence wasn't enough. Not the threat of it, nor the fact that he kicked the s*** out of her once he'd knocked her to the ground. And I'm telling you this in case there's a slight chance that you might actually realise that it shows just how much Arizona cared about me"

Carlos stared back at her, almost lost for words "I…I didn't know it would get that far, and I'm sorry"

"Are you?" Callie scoffed "Or are you just disappointed that your little theory didn't pan out? That you realise that Arizona did actually love me, and no amount of physical violence would change that?"

"I thought it would be…easier" Carlos admitted "I expected that she'd take the money. I never really considered what would happen if she didn't"

"But you had Eduardo lined up" Callie pointed out "so at least a part of you must have known"

"He told me" Carlos took a deep breath, feeling out of his depth with his daughter for the first time in her life "that he could take care of it. I didn't ask questions, because all I cared about in that moment was you"

"Well" Callie smiled ironically "do you want to know what it was that actually made Arizona leave? What is was that finally broke her?"

"I know he hit her Calliope, and I'm not proud of the fact that I allowed that to happen" her father replied.

Callie exhaled "Yeah he did. But the thing is, Arizona is stronger than either of you ever gave her credit for. He could have knocked her unconscious and it wouldn't have made a difference. So Eduardo went for the one thing that she would do anything to protect"

"Callie…" Aria asked slowly "what are you saying?"

"Arizona" Callie took a deep breath, trying to re-centre herself "no amount of threatening her personally would have make her leave. But she had a weak point"

Aria looked at her, part of her not wanting to hear the answer "Which was?"

"Me"

"Calliope, I don't think I like what you're insinuating" Carlos tried to warn her.

"Right now I don't care Papa" Callie laughed, feeling freer than she had ever felt in her life "You see, Arizona only left for one reason, and despite what you've said, it was the sole decision that was made that night to protect me. She left because Eduardo threatened to r*** me if she didn't"

Outside in the car, Arizona felt like she was slowly losing her mind. Objectively, she had known that whatever the outcome of the discussion, it would have taken a significant period of time. And that whatever emerged from the other side was going to be difficult to deal with. But the inside of her car provided very little by the way of distraction. In the last ten years, she had become somewhat desensitised to the concept of running away. But no matter what her instincts told her, she knew that Callie was the one person that she couldn't run away from. And so she alternated between playing with her phone, and fiddling around with the radio in the rental car, in order to pass the time.

When Callie emerged from the house, she realised that nothing could have emotionally prepared hers for the sight in front of her. The brunette practically ran towards the car, tears streaming down her face. As she wrenched the door open, and threw herself into the seat, Callie looked at her, desperately trying to fight back the sobs.

"Drive!"
