A/N
The date location in this chapter is a total work of fiction on my part – the ones from the first date were real, but this time I just wanted to create something that exactly fitted the bill for what Callie would have had in mind
Just a heads up, i'm away again this weekend, so it may be a few days before i post again
At exactly 7pm, the buzzer to Arizona's building went and she pressed the button to open the front door with a smile. She knew that Callie would have mean a real conscious effort to be on time tonight, and it mattered a lot to her. Arizona herself was always rigid with timekeeping, a product of her military upbringing she supposed. Callie with the exact opposite, her parents seemingly only able to be on time when it mattered for their business. But the younger Torres had always made an effort because she understood that it meant something to the blonde, and it didn't go unnoticed.
Knowing that the brunette would soon be at her door, she gave herself a once over in the mirror, smoothing down her one shouldered teal dress the ended at in ruffles at her knees. She'd opted for low wedges, taking note of Callie's mention of being on her feet a lot. She guessed they were going to be walked to their destination, and knew that these shoes were nearly as comfy as the ones she wore around the hospital all day.
When the knock on the door came, she opened it and genuinely lost her breath. Callie stood in front of her wearing a deep red dress with a plunging neckline, framed by ruffles that Arizona might later note were not dissimilar to those at the bottom of her own dress, and although it was knee length, came with a split that ran dangerously high up her right thigh.
"Red" the blonde managed to stammer "you look really good in red"
"You asked, I delivered" Callie shrugged, before continuing honestly "although if you'd said black, I would've kinda been screwed on the dress front"
"I don't think the question was about a dress, Calliope" Arizona pointed out breathily.
"No" the brunette shook her head "and I could've delivered either way on that"
The blonde bit her lip, desperately trying to push aside all the dirty thoughts she was currently having about Callie in her underwear, the colour of which was really quite irrelevant in her mind "I…I can imagine"
"You" the brunette looked Arizona up and down "you're really not making it easy to keep my hands off you"
"I wasn't aware that was a criteria when I was choosing an outfit" the blonde winked.
"I'm sorry, I just need to…."
Without finishing her sentence, Callie stepped forwards, pulling the blonde flush against her. She crashed their lips together, immediately feeling Arizona's mouth open to welcome her tongue. They both moaned, desperately clutching at each other as they kissed deeply.
Gradually the kisses slowed, each woman seeking to regularise their breathing through their nose. Finally their mouths broke apart, their hands still holding each other tight as they leant their foreheads together, panting.
"I'm sorry, I just really needed that" Callie apologised "I've been going crazy thinking about you…"
"Sshh" the blonde hushed her with a chaste kiss "please don't ever, ever apologise for kissing me like that"
"Ok" the brunette smiled shyly.
"Should we go?"
"Yeah, I think that's a good idea"
Gripping Arizona's hand firmly, the brunette lead them out of the building and headed to the subway entrance.
The blonde's brow furrowed "We're taking the subway"
"Yeah, I mean, unless you'd rather we took a cab?"
"No" Arizona answered quickly "I just assumed from what you said we'd be walking somewhere"
"Nope" the brunette grinned "but all will be revealed in good time"
"Ok" the blonde shrugged "I trust you"
"Good" Callie squeezed her hand and they made their way down into the subway, waiting just a couple of minutes for a train.
"So" the blonde smiled sweetly "how many stops?"
The brunette pursed her lips, immediately knowing that Arizona was trying to figure out where they were going, but fairly confident that the stop wouldn't give it away.
"Three" she answered decisively.
She had to laugh at the blonde's not-so-subtle attempts to glance at the map on the side of the car as she tried to figure out where they were going.
Sensing that she was being watched, Arizona turned and scowled at the brunette "This so isn't fair"
"You just need to be patient"
Looking straight into Callie's eyes, the blonde took hold of her hand "Oh I think you'll find I'm being very, very patient given the temptation in front of me"
The brunette swallowed "Then something as little as where we're going really shouldn't be so difficult, should it?"
"Touche"
They spent the rest of the subway journey holding hands, but making a conscious effort not to meet the other's gaze. It was amazing how interesting the side of a subway car could become when you were avoiding letting all of your feelings be revealed by one look in your eyes.
The two women practically jumped off the car when it pulled into the station, their hands still gripping each other tightly as they scaled the stairs and emerged on a street that Arizona vaguely recognised but hadn't spent much time on.
"So" Callie pulled out her phone to double check the directions that she'd probably checked a dozen times before she left her hotel "it should be just up here and to the left"
They followed the brunette's instructions and headed up the street, before turning off and ending up in front of lively looking bar with a bright sign outside that said 'Carnivale'.
"And here we are" Callie turned to the blonde with a hopeful smile.
"Is this…a salsa bar?"
"Yep. I mean, salsa and other latin music. Is this ok?"
"Absolutely" Arizona smiled wildly "lead the way"
In truth, it was a million miles away from anywhere the blonde would ever have frequented. But that was definitely at least in part due to the fact that she had avoided anywhere that might even vaguely make her think of Callie. Now, with the brunette by her side, she was nothing but excited about what the evening would offer.
"Good evening ladies" the doorman greeted them.
"Hi" Callie smiled at him "we have a reservation for 2 under the name Torres. Sorry, we might be a couple of minutes late"
The man laughed, glancing at his watch "Your booking was for two minutes ago. In latino time, that's on time. Let me show you to your table"
"Thank you" both women smiled gratefully.
As they entered the bar, the salsa music that could be heard from the street grew louder, and Arizona could see the slight sway in the brunette's hips as they were led to a table at the side of the dancefloor.
"I hope this is ok for you ladies" the man smiled at them both "and my colleague Miguel will be over shortly with your food"
"Yes, thank you" Callie gave him a wide smile.
"So what's the food?" the blonde asked once the man had walked away.
"So I really hope this is ok, but their thing here is tapas, so like small Spanish dishes, and when you book a table they just include a bunch of plates, and I realise now I didn't think to ask if there was anything…"
"Calliope" Arizona stopped the rambling with a firm hand on the brunette's arm "you know I love all food. Except sandwiches. And I'd even eat those if it meant I got to spend time with you. So please, relax"
"I'm sorry. It's just…last night was so perfect. And so I really, really want tonight to be perfect too"
"Well I think you've already one-upped last night with the kiss you gave me at my apartment" the blonde smiled.
"Oh, so you liked that, huh?"
"I think you know I did"
"I've been thinking about doing that all day" the brunette admitted.
"Me too. I've tried really damn hard to distract myself. I mean, I literally scrubbed my kitchen and bathroom, but I haven't been able to get my mind off you for a second"
"Good to know that I'm more appealing than cleaning" Callie winked.
Their attention was drawn to the stage at the side of the dancefloor where the first live act of the evening seemed to be stepping up. As the young woman started singing, Arizona nodded to the brunette.
"Ok, I can work with this kind of atmosphere" she said with a smile.
"And" Callie noticed the waiter bringing over their food "now you get to eat too"
"Perfect" the blonde grinned back at her.
The tapas turned out to be a mix of Spanish, Mexican and Cuban cuisine, so Callie was able to talk the blonde through most of the items before they ate them. Arizona had been honest earlier, she really did eat pretty much everything, but a lot of the things on the menu tonight were new to her. She smiled to herself, loving that she was having new experiences in her home city with Callie.
Soon after they'd finished their food, the young woman on the stage finished her set to a round of applause from the bar's patrons. Next up were a band who immediately upped the tempo, and one group of women got to their feet as soon as they heard the first song.
After nodding along for a few seconds, Arizona realised that the tune sounded familiar.
"Do I know this song?" she asked the brunette "I mean, should I know it?"
"Yeah" Callie laughed "it's Shakira"
"Ahhh" the blonde grinned "did I mention that I find Spanish sexy?"
"Maybe once or twice" the brunette winked.
Arizona's eyes narrowed, but she continued smiling "So is that why you brought me here?"
"I mean, it doesn't hurt" the brunette shrugged "but we're mainly here for what comes later"
"Uh huh…and what's that?"
"Dancing" Callie answered as though it was obvious.
"Dancing?"
"Yeah. Give it a little longer and we'll all be up with those women" the brunette nodded at the group who were already clearly a few drinks down and making the most of the empty dancefloor.
"Ok but you know I'm definitely not doing that" Arizona indicated one of the women who was demonstrating an impressive shimmy.
The brunette laughed "Yeah, the shimmy is totally optional. I just thought you might like to dance with me"
The blonde's smile softened "I would really like that"
"Ok I'm really glad to hear that, otherwise tonight was really going to bomb"
"Hang on" Arizona's eyes narrowed "you got this idea when we were reminiscing about prom last night, didn't you?"
"Guilty as charged" Callie held her hands up "is that a bad thing?"
"No" the blonde laughed "I think it's a pretty awesome idea"
The brunette looked over Arizona's shoulder and caught the attention of Miguel, their waiter "Hi, could we get some drinks please?"
"No problem ladies, what can I get you?" he asked.
"Tonight feels like a margarita night" Callie looked at the blonde "what do you reckon?"
"Why not?" Arizona smiled back sweetly "And hell, if I'm going to be dancing tonight, why not throw in a couple of tequilas for good measure"
Miguel grinned at them "Coming right up ladies"
As he walked away, the brunette raised her eyebrows "Go hard or go home?"
"I think you know that I'd really be game for both of those…" Arizona watched the brunette's breath hitch "but I also just want to let loose tonight"
Callie shook her head, laughing "Oh, you're so on"
"That almost sounds like a challenge, Calliope"
"Less of a challenge, more of a promise. In that, if you let loose tonight, I promise I'll show you a good time"
The blonde bit her lip, watching the dilution of Callie's pupils "I have no doubt about that"
"Here we go ladies!" Miguel interrupted their moment, resting his tray on the table to put down two margaritas and two shot glasses, along with the necessary accompaniments.
"Thank you" they both smiled up at him.
"Shall I just charge this to the card attached to the booking, or…"
"Yes that's fine" Callie cut him off with a smile.
"No problem, enjoy!"
"Callie" the blonde started "do you want me to…"
"No" the brunette interrupted "I'm taking you out tonight, and that's the end of it. Actually, I got the first hint of good news on the job front today. Jackson Avery emailed me, and said if I could win him over with a pitch for a story, he'd run with it"
"Oh my god" a wide grin spread over Arizona's face "Callie, that's incredible"
"Yeah" the brunette blushed "I mean, nothing's certain or anything, but there's at least a chance there, so thank you"
The blonde shook her head "I literally asked Maggie to speak to him, that's all. But you've got this, I know you do. It's liking you've been biding your time for years. Something big is going to come of this, I can feel it"
"Well, I wish I could share your optimism. But still, it feels positive and so now I just need to come up with a story that feels New York Times-worthy"
"Do you have any ideas?"
"I thought I did. But then, none of them really seem big enough. So I just need to take some time to really think about it before I decide what to put forward"
"Well you know I'm here as a sounding board if you need me" Arizona smiled at her, squeezing her hand.
"Thank you, I appreciate that" a twinkle appeared in the brunette's eye "now, shall we do this tequila that you were so quick to order?"
"Bring it on" the blonde smirked.
Both women took a sachet of salt, and their eyes locked together as they licked the bridge between their thumb and index finger and poured the salt on.
Picking up the slice of lime, Callie raised an eyebrow "You ready?"
"I'm always ready"
They broke eye contact for a second as each woman picked up a shot glass, but their eyes found each other again as they licked the salt from their hands. Knocking back the shot, they both then bit down on the lime. Callie barely flinched, other than to laugh lightly at the sight of the blonde screwing up her nose in disgust.
"You ok?" the brunette asked genuinely.
"Yep" Arizona winced "that might be my first and last tequila of the night, though"
"You know you literally don't need to do anything to impress me, right?"
"I know" the blonde smiled gratefully "maybe I'll stick to the margaritas"
"Cheers" Callie picked up her glass and waited for the blonde to clink with her.
"Cheers" Arizona grinned.
They both continued to drink their margaritas, watching the group of women who were already on the dancefloor, and eventually a few others that started to join them. The conversation was light, touching on a few ideas for Callie's NYT pitch that were quickly discounted, as well as Arizona asking about her day and the New York sights that she had seen.
As they finished their drinks, the brunette nodded at Arizona's glass "You ready to dance, or do you want another one?"
The blonde screwed up her face as she considered the options, which Callie couldn't help but find adorable "Umm, how about we get one more, and then I think I might be ready"
"Sure thing" the brunette grinned "I'm gonna head to the bathroom, but I'll order them on my way"
"Ok" Arizona smiled "but don't be too long"
True to her word, Callie headed for the bathroom, stopping to speak to Miguel and order two more margaritas.
Back at the table, the blonde continued to soak in the atmosphere of the bar. Although Latin music was something she'd avoided deliberately for the last ten years, she had to admit that she actually quite enjoyed it. And the band were really quite good, with the growing crowd on the dancefloor definitely appreciating the music they were playing. There were a few couples who really seemed to know what they were doing, with full salsa routines seeming to come natural to them. There was a moment of fear where Arizona worried that the brunette was going to be expecting her to do that, but then she realised that Callie would never do anything to make her feel uncomfortable. Sure, Callie loved to dance, but deep down she knew that the brunette just wanted to be close to her.
She looked up and smiled when Miguel placed two more margaritas down on their table, and seconds later Callie reappeared. They both thanked the waiter, and took a long sip of their drink.
"Did I miss anything while I was gone?" the brunette asked.
"Not much" Arizona grinned "one of the women tried to grab the mic from the singer, but her friends diffused the situation pretty quickly"
Callie laughed "There's always one"
"You certainly had your moments back in the day" the blonde pointed out.
"Hey" the brunette protested "I have no idea what you're talking about"
"Teddy's 18th birthday? Her parents paid for some singer and you insisted on being the one to sing happy birthday over the mic first?"
"Oh god" Callie covered her face with her hands "I'd totally forgotten about that"
"I hadn't" the blonde smiled gleefully "the look on your face when his manager quietly escorted you off the stage? Absolutely priceless"
"That's the first and the last time I've ever drunk whiskey" the brunette said firmly "I should never have let Teddy talk me into raiding her dad's liquor cabinet with her"
"Sticking to rum in future then?" Arizona winked.
The brunette's eyes darkened as she thought back to the moments that the two of them had shared after consuming various stashes of rum from her parents' house.
"Yeah" she agreed quietly "I don't regret anything I've done while drinking rum"
"Well" the blonde took a swig of her drink "how about we add tequila to that list?"
Callie grinned "I could get on board with that"
The two women carried on drinking, both turning to face the dancefloor as they pointed out a couple of people who had moves that were seriously impressive. There was one guy who seemed to want the attention of the whole bar on him, pushing others out of the way to make a fairly inadequate attempt at rolling his hips in the middle of the dancefloor. Clocking him, the two women looked at each other and shared a knowing glance, needing no words to convey that they were both thinking the same thing.
The song changed, and two men walked onto the dancefloor, holding hands. Callie held her breath, her experience in a small town telling her that somebody was bound to have a negative reaction, but none came. Instead, the two men began to salsa, and immediately received cheers as they moved together in synch.
Arizona turned to the brunette, wide eyed "And you want me to get on the dancefloor after that?"
Callie shook her head, laughing "No, we can wait til it's a little busier. I don't want attention, I just want the chance to dance up close with you"
"Are you gonna teach me the steps?"
"I promise, I'll walk you through every move"
Just as the brunette had predicted, over the next few minutes the dancefloor grew considerably busier, reaching the point where more than half of the bar's patrons were dancing. Draining the last of her margarita, she turned to the blonde "I'm ready whenever you are"
"Ok" Arizona bit her lip nervously "just give me a couple of minutes"
"Sure" the brunette reached out and squeezed her arm "take all the time you need. I mean, we can sit here all night if you'd rather"
"No" the blonde shook her head "I want to dance with you"
Arizona was true to her word, and finished her drink within the next two minutes. Placing it down decisively, she stood up and held out a hand to the brunette.
"Would you care to dance with me, Calliope?" she asked.
"I would love to"
