So, onto requests and suggestions. Obviously this means that they won't be in chronological order, just a heads up.
I don't own Phineas and Ferb, only my version of the London School of Musical Theatre and my OCs. This idea belongs to psav2005, filling in a gap during Chapter 10. Thanks for your suggestion :)
"Are you sure?" Reg called as Phineas leapt out of the car. "I'm sure it'll clear up soon!"
"I can't risk it!" Phineas yelled over his shoulder as he started running, weaving between the people. He had to make it, had to get there. What he was planning to do, he had no clue but he wouldn't even get the chance to figure it out if he couldn't get there. He pulled up maps on his phone, took a left turn. It was a long way to the school but he knew he had it in him. He reached into his backpack and pulled out his extendable skateboard, jumped on and sped towards the theatre.
"Ok," he swerved around another corner. "What about, I love you Isabella, I always have… no she won't believe that. Come on Phineas speak from the heart! I should start by apologising… but for what? No realising sooner, not making it clear what I wanted for us? Not telling her sooner? This could be the last chance I get; I have to make it right between us, it has to be perfect!"
"Watch where you're going!" Someone yelled as he whizzed past.
"Sorry!" He called back. "Come on, Phineas, think!"
The problem was, he didn't know where to begin. He hadn't been able to figure it out last week and he'd thought the pressure would help kick start his brain but instead it seemed like the opposite was happening. His mind, usually full of ideas, was completely blank. It was just his luck that when he needed some crazy plan to pop into his head, he was coming up dry.
This was taking too long, he needed to go faster. He pulled out onto the road, pressed the button on the back of the board with his heel and the rocket engine rose out from the deck. He shot forward picking up speed until the wheels left the ground and he was in the air.
Within minutes, the theatre loomed into view. There was soon to be no time to compose his speech. Hopefully he could think of something before the show finished so he could speak to her straight away. Maybe a congratulations for her performance and his mere presence would be enough to get her to hear him out.
He screeched his hoverboard to a stop, folding it down and jamming it back into his pack as he sprinted up the stairs. He yanked on the door but they were locked. He spun away in frustration before turning back and tenderly giving the doors a push, just in case. Unfortunately, simple yet witty resolutions to problems such as this this were only a thing in movies.
"Ok, now what?" He asked himself. He supposed he could wait outside until the show was done and everyone came out… no, he needed to properly be there, to show his support. He searched through his pockets and backpack to see what he could build and was all set to cobble something together when he heard applause ring out from around the side of the massive building.
He ran down the stairs and made his way round to the right-side alley way.
It was beginning to get dark as the evening fell upon the day, but the darkness just made the illumination from the door brighter. The side entrance. Why hadn't he thought of that?
He shot down the way and stepped inside.
"I'm… backstage?" He looked around the racks of costumes and discarded scripts. What was he meant to do now? There was no one around, but he could hear voices and laughter coming from behind the thick red curtain which he guessed was where the stage was.
"Hey!" Two boys dressed in scruffy tunics and slacks strode towards him. "You're not meant to be back here."
"Sorry," Phineas blurted. "The front doors were locked and I really need to be there for my… friend."
One of the boys glanced nervously towards the stage. "Bryan, come on! We should get in place."
Phineas did a double take. "You're Bryan?"
The boy, who Phineas now realised to be the guy who Vivian said was going to (maybe even had already) kiss Isabella, raised an eyebrow. "Do I know you?"
"No, but you know Isabella." He ran a hand through his hair. "I'm Phineas."
"Bryan, come on!" The other boy hissed again.
"Wait, wait," Bryan waved a hand dismissively. "You're Phineas? The Phineas? The one Isabella likes?"
"Yes?"
"What are you doing here?"
"I… I need to tell Isabella that I love her," Phineas answered before frowning. "I don't know why I told you that."
"Be glad you did because I have an idea." He gestured to the other boy. "Charles, help us out!"
"What about the show?" Charles protested. "Bryan, what are you doing?"
"Our next scene," Bryan explained. "There's a confession from Demetrius to Helena. A confession of love…"
"You want me to take your place?" Phineas spluttered, catching on. "That's… perfect!"
"Time's running out," Bryan said, shrugging off his tunic. "Hurry up and get changed."
"How will I know when to speak?" Phineas asked.
Charles grabbed a script book. "You only have one line beforehand. When we go out there, you need to lie down-"
"Wait," Phineas interrupted. "I know this scene."
"Oh, thank God," Charles sighed.
"The one where Theseus, Egeus and Hippolyta find the lovers in the woods?"
"Your line is, 'if I may, I was told about their plans to elope and so I followed them out of spite.'" Bryan nodded.
"Connie, Isabella and I can fill in your other lines after the confession," Charles added. "You two can switch back after the scene ends."
"Voilà!" Bryan grinned stepping back. "You look the part."
"It's a bit big," Phineas murmured.
"No time for that, you're on!" Bryan gave him a push and suddenly he was onstage. There were a lot more people out there than he had realised there'd be. He really hoped he could do a good job with…
Oh no. In all the excitement, he'd completely forgotten to take a moment to calm himself down and think about what to actually say. His mind whirred as the scene went on but when he felt Charles nudge him, cueing him to stand up, he still had nothing. He saw Isabella exchange a glance with the girl playing Hermia and knew that if he didn't think of something perfect, she would hate him forever.
"Morning Lovebirds," one of the boys declared. Phineas focused his breathing, willing something, anything to come to him.
Charles stepped forward but Phineas tuned him out.
Do I compliment her? Do I apologise? Do I-
"He confesses!" the boy playing Egeus spluttered. Phineas jolted. Time was up. He tuned back in just in time to hear his cue. "-who my daughter shall marry!"
"If I may," he raised his hands. "I was told about their plans to leave Athens and so I followed them." Close enough.
"Who told you?" the Egeus demanded.
Phineas turned to Isabella and suddenly everything clicked into place. He smiled and stepped towards her. "Helena told me," he began softly. "And because of her feelings of love towards me, for a long time she followed me. I was clueless to her feelings despite the fact that I had played with her emotions countless time," guilt slipped into his voice as he saw her avert her eyes from his, but he pushed on. "I couldn't comprehend the idea of how she felt towards me so I diverted my attention to Hermia." As he went on, he started to realise that this was the first time he had admitted any of this to anyone, including himself and he hoped she knew that by 'Hermia' he was referring to his builds. "My love for Hermia became my life and I blocked everything else out. But it has occurred to me, my lord, that I don't think I knew what love meant. I thought love was a confession but in truth it is the acceptance of someone else. It's the constant urge to make sure they're ok and safe. It is the promise to stand by and support each other through thick and thin. To retain a connection no matter where our lives may take us. It is clear to me that there is only one person I truly love and that is Helena. She makes my world brighter, she makes me want to rise in the morning. My lord, despite my apparent love for Hermia, I love only Helena." He smiled again, shyly waiting for a reaction as their eyes met.
She stepped towards him and he was surprised when he pulled him close and kissed him.
Pleasantly surprised, of course.
After the scene ended, Phineas switched back with Bryan and after promising to speak to Isabella properly after the performance, joined her parents in the auditorium.
"Oh, Phineas, you did wonderful!" Vivian whispered as he sat down beside her.
"Thanks," he replied smiling. "I just spoke my heart."
"Wonderful," she repeated kindly.
Phineas looked towards the stage but couldn't focus. His entire body was bursting with joy. Not only had he confessed perfectly to Isabella, she had seemed to return his affections, kissed him even. Maybe it was supposed to be a stage kiss, but it hadn't felt that way. It had felt genuine, heartfelt. It had felt nothing less than perfect.
The rest of the show passed in a blur and before he knew it, he was standing outside the theatre waiting for Isabella and the rest of the cast to come round front.
Bryan and Charles were the first people he recognised from the people flooding out through the doors. Phineas waved them down, congratulated and thanked them a final time.
And then Isabella was walking towards him, a goofy smile on her face.
"Hey Phineas," she said. "Whatcha doin' here?"
"I came to see your play," he answered. "You were amazing out there."
"You weren't so bad yourself."
"Well," he shrugged guiltily. "I wish I could have gotten here sooner but in hindsight, I'm glad I didn't. If I hadn't been so late, I wouldn't have ended up backstage."
"So," she spread her hands. "What happens now?"
"I… I don't know. But I do know that I've missed you so much," he ran a hand through his hair. "I started high school without you and so much has happened… don't get me wrong, I'm so happy that you've found your place here but… I don't know, I think we should talk more."
"I agree," she nodded. "It's been weird not talking to you. I mean, we grew up together, not having you around has been unusual at the very least."
"I'm sorry," he blurted. "For how I was when you left two years ago. Seriously, I am but I also think some time apart did us some good."
"Yeah," she nodded again. "Phineas, I don't want to give up on my future for you anymore than I want you to give up on your future for me."
"You're going to be in London until graduation and I want to finish high school and maintaining long distance probably isn't going to last through all that."
"Maybe it's better we stay friends for now?" She offered. "Maybe we should find out own places in the world before we commit to this relationship?"
"Relationship yes," Phineas agreed. "But until then and even if it doesn't work out, I'll always be committed to this friendship."
"Always," Isabella echoed. "And we can text and video chat and I'll probably come back to Danville for holidays, so this isn't goodbye."
"Of course not," he grinned and hugged her. "I'm glad we talked this out. And it was great to see you, Isabella."
"You too, Phineas." She stepped back and matched his grin. "How long are you here for then?"
"Oh gosh," he looked at his watch. "My plane left an hour ago, but if I leave now, I might be able to reschedule it…"
"In that case," she kissed him on the cheek. "I'll see you soon, Phineas Flynn."
He pulled his skateboard out of his bag, "Yes, yes you will."
He jumped onto his board and with a press of a button the rochet engine rose up causing the board to leap into the air. With a final wave, he was gone.
Gone for sight, that is. But not from her heart.
