Still 3rd Person POV
Raven flew as fast as she could, not taking any chance of her team following her. She soon realized that to truly be incognito, she would need a new wardrobe; one that did not include spandex or a leotard. She applied a large amount of dark makeup that she purchased, using the paleness of her skin to her advantage. She also bought some hair dye, to make her hair more black instead of her recognizable indigo.
By the time she was done with her transformation, she could barely even recognize herself. She wore a tight, black, long-sleeved shirt; around her waist she wore a deep purple studded belt. The belt held up a black skirt that was short by most standards, but it was enough that the skirt did not past her mid thigh. Down her legs were black fishnets, and on her feet she wore studded boots that were edged with the same color as the belt.
After she paid for the items using bills, Raven sighed and grudgingly walked to the Jump City Airport, which was thankfully less than five minutes on foot. She did not want to expose herself to the prying public eye. When she arrived and looked at the flight listings, she found only a flight to Alaska available. Sighing heavily throughout the process, she used her emergency passport baring her original name, Rachel Roth, and bought a ticket. After going through the unbearable security process, boarded her designated plane.
When she landed, Raven seemed to feel at home, at least enough to find herself searching for residences in any safe small town she could find.
After a month of searching and staying in cheap motels, Raven bought a lake house a few miles from a decently populated town. It was perfect; the town itself had stores, an educational system, a health department, and a number of kind residents. (AN: Sorry if the above section is a bit rushed, there is only so much that can be done when nothing is happening, and adding details would just make it irritatingly slow.)
Eight months later, on the day of October 31. Raven went into labor, and was rushed to the hospital. The first baby that arrived was a girl. The second was a boy, who arrived at fifteen minutes after his sister. This made the boy's birthday the day after his sister's, as he was born at 12:05 a.m. on November 1. The girl was a bit smaller then the boy, and as loud as her brother cried, only tiny whimpers and whines came out of the female baby. She thanked all the gods she knew of that her children were not green. Their skin was a beautiful light color and while the girl was bald, the boy had a small tuft of golden blonde hair on his head. Though it was sad that she had no one to share the love of her own children with, she loved them all that more.
She named the boy Kane Garfield, with Kane meaning warrior and Garfield after his father. The girl was named Azar Arella after her former mentor and her mother. She put their last name as Logan, after their father. At first, she was hesitant about giving her children Beast Boy's original last name, but soon realized that it was for the best, with her children not being able to be associated with her if someone were to find out her hero identity and attempt to harm her.
She put Beast Boy's real name in the father slot of both children's birth certificate as well, knowing that if something were to happen to her, her children could find him and be safe.
Soon after their birth, Raven realized that her children were different than others their age. When her baby boy opened his eyes for the first time, she was given a bit of a surprise: instead of a regular pair of brown, blue, hazel, or even Raven's indigo eyes, Kane's eyes were forest green, the same as Beast Boy's. When she saw her daughter's eyes, she saw her own two eyes staring back at her. Her daughter's eyes were indigo just as hers were.
When their teeth started to come in around six months of age, Raven found that the fraternal twins canines were sharper than the average person's. Both the bottom and top jaw looked as if it had slight fangs coming out of them.
Kane had formed his first word at 7 months old. His first word was his sister's name. Though, when it came out, it sounded like "Azaw" because who could not form the 'R' sound just yet. When Azar had heard her brother call her name, she looked up from the toys she was playing with and nodded at her brother. Raven had half-expected her daughter to call out her twin's name in response, but instead was met with silence from the older twin. Raven kneeled next to Kane and hugged him close, praising him for his achievement. Kane, though, had ignored her and continued to babble his sister's name, saying it a bit slower to try and make it sound like his mommy when she called his sister's name. Raven noticed the change and watched with a raised eyebrow as her son sound out his sister's name again and again, only to afterwards scrunch up his face in disgust like Raven was feeding him mashed peas. It didn't take long before Raven had realized what her son was trying to do. She smiled at her son's antics and decided to put him out of his misery.
"Kane," Raven called her son. Kane obediently looked up when his mother had called him.
"Try saying this for me," Raven started, "Azzy."
"Aggy," Kane repeated, stumbling over the sounds.
"Azzy," Raven said again, this time slower, enunciating the 'z' sound.
"Azzy."
"Very good!" Raven praised. "You can call your sister that until you learn your 'R' sound," she pointed at Azar while saying "your sister", hoping that the young boy understood her.
Raven watched as Kane crawled over to his sister, babbling her new nickname to her. Kane smiled when his sister finally glanced up at him and tilted her head in confusion, after all, he had been sitting and calling out the word for a good while.
"Azzy!" Kane shouted as he pointed directly to his sister. The young girl tilted her head back into normal position and went back to playing with her toys, almost as if she was ignoring her younger brother.
"Azzy?" Kane called tearfully, barely forming the words. Azar looked up at him again, this time looking at her brother the same way they looked at their mother when she called them. Kane smiled as big as Raven had ever seen him smile as Azar pushed Kane one of the toys next to her. Kane grabbed the toy and sat next to her, babbling in his own language as Azar listened. Raven watched over lovingly as the two played together, a joyful smile on her face.
Nine months in, when Azar finally acquired some hair, instead of being the expected indigo or green (more so the latter than anything) Raven was puzzled once again, when her daughter's hair turned out to be a pitch black. Kane's hair, which had fallen out (as natural for a baby), was now growing a bit differently... it was thicker, more natural looking.
It was around their first year that Raven knew not only were her children different, they were special as well. It was on the day that they took their first steps.
When Raven had been preparing lunch for the children and herself, she glanced out into the living room to check on the twins, who had been left unsupervised. She nearly dropped the knife she held in her hand; in the middle of the floor, among toys and books, Kane was shakily standing by himself. Raven watched as her son hastily took a step forward… and ultimately failed to keep himself up, falling to the ground and allowing himself to cry quietly.
Before Raven's motherly instinct could even kick in, she watched as her daughter, who Raven had forgotten to even glance at due to the surprise that had occurred, propped herself onto her feet with such ease, it almost looked rehearsed. Raven watched as Azar watched expertly walked over to her brother, as if she had been walking since the day she was born. Her daughter had collapsed next to her brother soon after, her little legs not strong enough to last very long.
"Up." Raven blinked, flabbergasted. She even had to blink a few times to make sure what she heard was not a dream. Even though Kane had learned a few more words since his first, this had been Azar's first word and first time speaking.
"Up," Azar repeated, urging her brother. Kane, who had since stopped crying, looked into his sister's eyes, and there they sat, not moving, almost as if silently communicating with each other.
"Kane, up," Azar spoke after the long moment of silence. This time, Kane followed directions, standing up in front of his sister, with Azar following a moment after. The elder twin took a few steps and held herself up on the couch that sat perpendicular to her.
She turned her head and looked back at her brother, "Kane, come." Again, Kane listened, shakily walking next to his sister and allowing himself to lean against the couch. The couch, which was lower the ground than most, had a spot on it where the twins often enjoyed sitting on when their mother place them there. Together, on Azar's command, the two scrambled up and sat in the exact places that their mother usually placed them in. It was here they sat when Raven walked into the room, her eyes glossed with tears.
Kane started to panic, thinking that his mother was in pain, "Mama, no cry."
Raven let out a watery chuckle, picking up her son, "I'm crying because I'm happy, not because I'm sad."
"No sad?" Kane questioned, not believing her, obviously being a crying expert, he should
"No, I'm not sad," Raven smiled and wiped her tears, "Now, does my big boy want a treat for being so caring?" Kane clapped his hands and nodded enthusiastically.
Raven turned to Azar and bounced Kane to the other side, "What about you Azar, do you want a treat?" Azar shook her head, snuggling more into the couch and away from her mother. Raven, though confused, accepted her daughter's answer and, with Kane in her arms, walked into the kitchen to get a treat.
(AN: Okay, so the part before the giant time skip is also going to get a bit rushed and a bit short. Don't worry, I'll go into detail later; I just want to get to the actual plotline instead of giving details that will be more important later in the story than they will be right now.)
When they were old enough, Raven sent Kane and Azar to pre-school. Around that same time, Kane morphed into his first animal: a squirrel. Instead of it being green like his father, it matched the natural color of the animal in question.
Raven had to try to explain both children to not use their powers in public and to not draw that kind of attention to themselves (this was mostly for Kane, since Azar had yet to show any sign of having any kind of power). When Raven saw that both children seemed to understand completely, she had both of their intellects tested. She later found that Azar, who had the intelligence of a young adult, was a lot smarter than Kane, though smart, only had the intelligence of a child a few years older than him. She then moved Kane to an academy that could hone in his skills to make him smarter, and she moved Azar's education to a prestigious university, where Azar's intelligence would not only be put to the test, but could possibly be shared with those who could do something good with it.
By 6, Kane had successfully skipped three grades, so he was in grade 3 instead of being in grade 1 like the rest of his age group. Azar, who showed the possibility of having powers, but no evidence of them actually being there, went missing after the university had been set ablaze and was presumed dead.
Raven was devastated; without Kane, she probably would have died from heartbreak. She became over-protective of her son, not wanting to lose him like she had lost Azar.
It was at age 9, Kane started his official training. As time went on, Raven and Kane discovered that Kane had limited amounts of power that he inherited from his mother, meaning that the only useful power Kane had was his shifting abilities. Raven tried her best to train him, but there were things not even she could teach.
Time Skip
Raven and Kane waited for their plane to land. In the past 2 years, Kane had graduated high school and mastered his powers. On his 17th birthday, his mother presented him with tickets to Titan City (it was previously named Jump City, but it was renamed during the 15th anniversary of the Teen Titans). And there they were, the next day, waiting to board their plane to Titan city.
Raven looked at how much her son had grown in the past 17 years. Kane's height measured at 6'0", much taller than Raven's height of 5' 6". Kane often teased her about how short she was compared to him, which had become had a running joke between the two of them. He had unfortunately become a bit of a Mama's boy, and Raven's attention had made him virtually forget about his sister's disappearance. Not that he didn't think about her, it was just a rare occurrence that tickled in the back of his mind every so often. He kept his hair short and his clothes ironed and clean.
Even after living in Alaska for so long, Raven made sure Kane didn't develop any kind of accent, leaving him with what was a 'normal' American accent.
As soon as she could, Raven sat down on one of the various chairs and massaged her temples. Raven had gained a headache during the flight and the jet-lag that accompanied it was not helping her mood.
Kane had noticed his mother's agitation and quickly asked, "Would you like me to take your bag for you, Mom?"
Raven only sighed and nodded in response, allowing him to take her hand after he relieved her of her luggage. Kane gently squeezed her hand in reassurance, silently promising relief as soon as possible. After what seemed like hours, the two finally were able to get out of the heavily populated airport. As the breezy midnight air hit his body, Kane allowed himself to be led through the streets of Jump City, with his mother subconsciously mapping their route as she walked. Within minutes, they arrived at a small yet homey hotel and stepped in.
An unseen figure watched from a distance, silently observing the pair as the two unpacked their bags and shut out their lights. The figure's eyes narrowed, calculating their options. Having decided almost immediately that now was not the time to act, the figure rushed off into the dark night.
