Nightmare: An Immortal Spacemonkey Story
Disclaimer: As much as I wish, I do not own Stargate: SG1, Highlander the Series, or any recognizable characters. Any character that you do not recognize are mine to use and abuse as I see fit. Everyone else will eventually be returned, but they might be a bit scuffed.
A/N: This story fits into my Immortal Spacemonkey universe. It is set sometime after season 10, but before Ark of Truth. It would help if you have read the other stories before this reading this one.
Anyways, I hope you enjoy it and thank you for reading. Feel free to drop me a review and let me know what you think. Constructive criticism and feedback is always appreciated. Flames do not help and will be ignored.
Chapter 1
SG-1 was on PX2-811, doing their usual meet and greet. The grass was green, the sky was blue. There were two moons in the sky. The people were nice and were not trying to kill them. Also, the locals hadn't been touched by Ori and the Priors. It might have been due to the fact that they were a small settlement and didn't have much to offer in terms of numbers, maybe around a hundred or less, for mass worship. It was a pleasant change from the constant peril and danger that SG-1 seemed to attract.
There was a small problem on the planet that the people there needed help solving.
The planet had a snake problem. Not a Goa'uld snake issue, but more of a regular, slithery, poisonous snake problem. The damn things could be found across the settlement. In the trees, in the caves, in the fields, by the river, in the outhouses. The population wasn't out of control, technically, and the snakes were more afraid of people and were quick to avoid humans, but accidental bites did happen.
The people were damn near fed up with the situation and were thinking about leaving the place, but were hesitant because of the Ori. They traded with others and were well aware of the problems of the galaxy.
The snakes looked like the rainbow pythons of Earth. Their scales shimmered like an oil slick on water. They were pretty, but had the potential to be quite deadly. If a bite wasn't treated quickly enough, the venom caused the victim to hallucinate. The hallucinations were horrible, usually involving a person's greatest fears. Not soon after that, if not treated quickly, the victim died. The good thing was that the people had a pretty decent anti-venom at their disposal, but were hoping to find a better one, one that worked quicker than what they currently had.
The planet had a deposit of naquadah, close to the Stargate, that the SGC was interested in and in exchange for access to the mineral, they were willing to help the locals with their snake issue, though they had to first catch one of the snakes in order for one of their scientists to develop an effective anti-venom from the snakes' venom. Therefore, the members of SG-1 had to go into the near-by forest to find a snake. The people said that there were plenty of snakes to be found there.
Cameron, Teal'c, and Daniel offered to go into the forest in search of a snake. The ladies of the team, Sam and Vala, refused to go themselves. Vala hated snakes with a passion and while Sam was not terrified of them, she did not like them either; she bravely offered to stay with Vala and offer moral support. She was being a good friend, therefore the guys had to get one on their own.
The men entered the forest, moving between the trees and around the shrubbery, looking intently at the ground for the elusive creatures. The damn things that were supposedly populating the forest, were much harder to find than the locals had let on.
An hour later, still having zero luck in finding a snake, the trio took a break. Daniel sat down on a near-by rock to take a drink from his canteen. While it wasn't overly hot on the planet, the dry air made him pretty thirsty.
Daniel absently put his hand down next to him and immediately felt twin stings in his hand. It felt like acid was being pumped into his veins and was racing up his arm. The pain was excruciating, every nerve felt like it was on fire. His vision swam and he must have blacked out because the next thing he knew he was on the ground, staring up at the concerned faces of Mitchell and Teal'c.
"How are you doing Sunshine?" Cameron asked, staring down at his teammate.
"What happened?" Daniel croaked, feeling like crap.
"You were bitten by a snake DanielJackson," Teal'c intoned, looking concerned.
"Help me up," Daniel told his teammates, who promptly hauled him to his feet. "Did I die? I feel bad enough that I might have."
Cam shrugged. "We heard you scream, looked over and you were on the ground with a snake doing its best to take a chunk out of your hand. The whole thing lasted only a few seconds."
Daniel frowned. It certainly felt like he had died, from his perspective, and that the experience was longer than a few seconds. "What happened to the snake?" he asked, feeling the familiar tingling of his Immortal healing abilities repairing the damage done to his hand and arm.
Teal'c gestured with a tilt of his head and a sideways glance with his eyes where the snake lay on the ground, charred like a hotdog on Jack's grill in the middle of July. His Quickening had fried the reptile, ruining any chance of using it to find a better anti-venom remedy for the people of the planet.
"Crap," Daniel muttered. "Now we have to capture a live one, again."
"Nope," Cameron said smugly. "Never let it be said that my childhood of running around my parents' farm and catching snakes sneaking into the chicken coop was worthless." The leader of SG-1 held up a squirming cloth sack, obviously proud of himself. "Didn't get bit either."
Daniel grumbled a little, but was glad Cameron managed to nab one of the creatures. The sooner he got out of the blasted trees the better.
He then tried to take a step forward, but faltered and almost took a header into the ground. Teal'c caught him by the arm, preventing him from crashing. Daniel then shook his head, trying to get rid of the cobwebs and the spots that were appearing before his eyes.
"Are you not well DanielJackson?" Teal'c inquired, an eyebrow quirked slightly up.
"My head feels weird, floaty," Daniel admitted.
Cameron looked a little worried. While he now knew his teammate's secret, his well-being of Daniel was still a concern of his. They were teammates after all. "The snake dumped a boatload of venom into your system. If it weren't for your Immortality, you'd probably be dead. Your body is probably just dealing with the shock."
Daniel shrugged. Cameron was probably right.
They made it back to the village and told the people that they would be taking the snake to their people for analysis and to expect another team to arrive in a few days to finalize the deal between their people.
Once farewells were made, Earth was dialed up and the members of SG1 returned back home.
A/N: This story was born out of a few things mentioned in past stories and on long bicycle rides where I had to think of something other than how much my legs were killing me. It has been fun to plot out. I just hope others enjoy it as much as I have.
