A/N: Well, this will be the final chapter of this story. Just a little something to wrap it all up. Not sure when I'll start posting the sequel (probably not any time too soon), but it will come eventually. Enjoy! We don't own Trolls.
The next few days were rather busy for everyone. The day after their return, Creek told Poppy a proper goodbye, which left her rather confused since he had already broken up with her. However, this conversation included an apology for the way he'd been treating her and Branch, which Poppy accepted. It seemed Creek had finally calmed down enough to realize he'd been wrong, and the two of them agreed to stay friends. Creek, however, wanted to have some time apart for awhile so he could recover, so the both of them agreed to let him have that.
Creek also took the twins to see both Dr. Moonbloom and Cybil that same afternoon. Once he had explained the situation to them both, Dr. Moonbloom examined the girls to determine if Creek's assumptions were true and promised she would have the results for him soon. She also requested that the twins visit her regularly until the results came back, just to see if anything changed. If what Creek said was true, the twins should have their eggs any day now.
Cybil, on the other hand, told the three not to worry because everything would work out in the end. Even if this wasn't the straight answer they hoped for, it was still a relief to hear. At least the complicated mess their lives could soon become would somehow work. Creek was glad that he didn't need to worry about the twins hurting him out of anger at impregnating them or something, but he didn't tell them that.
Additionally, the village spent that week getting settled back in the town they had hastily fled. They had to clean up after Chef, for one thing—she'd knocked several pods down while rampaging through their town. Poppy helped clean up the debris and repair the damaged structures. After about a week, everything was back to normal, and the trolls went right back to their regular activities, this time without any fear of the bergens eating them.
Branch, meanwhile, had gotten settled in at home. He'd made the trip back to that horrid swamp and packed up what he needed or wanted and cleaned out the bunker in Troll Village. Every day, he'd woken up, fearing it was just a dream and he'd be back in the swamp, but it never turned out that way. He was home.
"It's good to be back," he said, smiling, as he looked around his bunker.
Someone started knocking up above, and Poppy's voice cried out, "Branch! Branch! Branch!"
Branch chuckled as his girlfriend kept frantically calling his name. There was a time when that would annoy him, but that time was behind them. He headed up the elevator and opened the door. "Hey, Poppy."
The queen of Troll Village looked to be torn between two different emotions. On the one hand, she looked excited. On the other, she looked panicked. "Branch! Get out here quick! You will not believe what happened!"
"What?" he asked, climbing out of the bunker. He wasn't sure if he should be concerned, given Poppy's split emotions.
Rather than answer, Poppy grabbed his arm and dragged him off, saying, "Come on!"
"Hey!" he protested.
She dragged Branch to the twins' home, where the rest of the Snack Pack (minus Creek and DJ) were gathered, talking. The atmosphere inside was tense, as if something dreadful had happened.
"What's going on? Is everyone okay?" Branch asked, now definitely worried.
"Poppy! Oh, thank cupcakes!" Smidge cried, looking frantic. "It's Satin and Chenille! They aren't—"
Looking panicked, Poppy cut her off, hands to her face with worry, "I know, Smidge! Creek already told me! What do we do about it, you guys!? Any ideas!?"
Satin and Chenille aren't what? Branch thought. It can't be that they aren't pregnant! That would be a good thing! So what is it? Satin and Chenille aren't really sisters? No, that doesn't warrant this level of panic. Satin and Chenille aren't able to carry their children to term? I mean, if they want to be mothers someday, that would be bad in the long-term, but not right now! Come to think of it, shouldn't they have eggs soon? Wait... What if it's worse than that?
The idea that something was wrong with some of his new friends was too much to bear. It was typical for his life—people he cared about often ended up hurt or worse. His parents, his grandma, almost Poppy... He couldn't keep losing people like this!
As Branch got lost in paranoid and panicked thoughts, Poppy remembered what had happened just hours before.
Poppy walked along, humming a merry tune, when all of a sudden, Creek came running up behind her. From the look on his face, he had something great to say.
"Poppy! My queen! I've got such wonderful news!"
Poppy turned, looking curious. "Huh? What is it, Creek?"
Creek threw his arms out, smiling brightly, and answered, "It's the twins, my friend! We just got back from our fifth visit to Dr. Moonbloom's, and you won't believe it! They're not pregnant after all!"
Poppy's face lit up from excitement. No eggs with babies on the way? Given that the twins hadn't wanted to be parents yet, that was definitely a good thing! "Really!? That's—" She cut herself off, eyes widening, as something hit her.
Creek, her ex-boyfriend, wasn't going to be a father. This meant he was officially free. Unattached. No children on the way. He could date anyone he wanted. He could try to get back with her.
On the other side of that issue was her new boyfriend, Branch. He was the most aggressive troll in all of Troll Village, overprotective, and paranoid. He'd done everything he could to keep Creek away from her when he tried to make love to her, as if he'd viewed Creek as a threat. At least, that's what she'd thought at the time. Looking back, knowing that Branch had been crushing on her for ages, that looked more like jealousy, and a jealous Branch wasn't something Poppy wanted to see. This would be worse than Guy and Biggie fighting over Smidge.
That was a worrisome thought.
Poppy reigned in her anxiety, deciding not to just assume this would be a problem. Slightly worried, she asked, "Wait...you're not gonna cause any trouble over this, are you? 'Cause, fair warning, he's a lot tougher than you are, Creek."
Creek smiled strangely, a look of envy in his eyes. "No, no, no, no, my friend. I would never dream of doing a thing like that. In fact, I'm rather happy for the two of you and just wanted to wish you both luck." He gave a mischievous grin and added, "After all, everyone knows how badly you're going to need it."
Yes, Creek had said that already. Yes, he knew he didn't stand a chance the way things were now. No, he didn't think this newfound relationship would last. Falling in love with your hero on an adventure was one thing, but falling for someone just because he saved her life wouldn't be enough to hold their relationship together. There were several problems with this romance that would, eventually, rear their ugly heads. It was just a matter of time, and Creek would be right there when it ended. He just had to wait. He had more in common with Poppy than Branch did, after all.
Poppy stared at him, unsure what to make of that. Did that mean he was going to leave it be? "Uuh... Thanks, I guess...?"
His tone implied that he was plotting, so Poppy doubted he'd let it go. Maybe he'd try to frame Branch for more crimes he didn't commit? No, that wasn't Creek's style. He was too nice for that, but he did enjoy making Branch look like a fool when they were kids. Maybe he'd try painting Branch as some embarrassing safety nerd that no troll would ever date because he'd be too overprotective! That seemed more likely, all things considered.
Of course, Branch was overprotective and a safety nerd. Poppy knew this about him already, and it didn't bother her. She was prepared for anything he might throw at her, including (but not limited to) sticking her in a hamster ball to keep her safe, making her wear padding when she did anything, and increasing security around Troll Village.
Still, if Creek tried to ruin their relationship and Branch found out, hair would fly. Branch didn't like being accused of things he didn't do. In fact, he positively hated it, for understandable reasons. He needed to get over that before someone got hurt, but Creek would probably start something before that could happen.
"Right, then. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm late for my yoga class." He started walking past her, looking really smug. "Ta-ta, pal. See you soon."
Poppy stood there, stunned and worried for a full 30 seconds. There was no way Creek was just going to let this go, and there was even less of a chance that Branch would take Creek's shenanigans lying down any longer. She was surprised he'd been so tame about it during their Bergen Town adventure, really. But now that he was her boyfriend and clearly the jealous type...
No doubt about it. Someone was going to get hurt. And just when everyone had started trusting Branch again, too. The last thing he needed was for them to start fearing they'd been right all along. With how things were around here, the trolls might demand Branch be locked up for life!
Now more worried than ever before, Poppy quickly shook off her shock. "Oh, man! I gotta find Branch and tell the others quick!"
It was time for an emergency meeting. She ran off to find the others—and grab her boyfriend so she could warn him what might be coming. His paranoia was starting to rub off on her. Granted, it didn't help that it had been so hard to convince her friends they were wrong about Branch. People needed to see the good in him first, or this paranoid fear might actually happen!
This was what brought them all here today. Poppy had, in fact, run around and told everyone else to meet her at the twins' pod to discuss the situation. DJ hadn't arrived yet, but Poppy didn't expect her to be here right now. She'd had the presence of mind to tell the disc jokey that the twins weren't pregnant (something she'd neglected to tell Smidge) and was informed that DJ already knew. DJ told Poppy she was going to go ask for advice, but she didn't say who she was asking for advice.
Poppy cringed, remembering it. However, nobody had thought to tell Branch anything about it, so he was still worrying himself sick over this.
Briefly forgetting that trolls have eggs, not live births (like bergens), Branch worried, Maybe there's a complication with their pregnancies! Maybe it's an ectopic pregnancy? But both of them? That seems unlikely.
What were the odds that they would both have the same complications at the same time?
Maybe they got injured sometime in the past, and the injuries aren't fully healed and are getting worse? He could think of several times when they could have gotten hurt, especially since he hadn't been with them that entire journey. It's gotta be internal, though! I can't see anything wrong with them! What if this is some kind of combination, maybe getting pregnant aggravated their injuries!?
"How should I know!" Guy answered Poppy's question about what they should do. "I'm no doooooctor!"
"There has to be something we can do! This is serious!" Biggie worried.
Branch, meanwhile, was growing more and more concerned with each passing second. Are they even going to be okay!? I don't want to lose any of my friends this soon! I just got them! They can't die now!
If somebody didn't tell him what was going on soon, he'd probably drag those twins—who were standing right there, looking as worried as everyone else—straight to the doctor and demand that she, Plum, and anybody else in the area with qualifications take care of them right now.
DJ came running in then, excited. "Ya guys! I just spoke with Cybil! And she said not to worry 'cause everything will work itself out!"
"Really!?" Poppy asked, looking at her with excited relief.
Cybil's track record was amazing. She'd never been wrong in her predictions, so Poppy felt much better knowing that she thought things would be okay.
She turned to the others and said, "Hear that, gang!? Cybil says—"
This may have been good enough for Poppy, but Branch needed some reassurance from someone a little more reliable. "The last time I talked to Cybil, she said I was about to have a visitor get inside my bunker and convince me to throw a party," he said, remembering that day when he was 12.
Cybil had, in fact, been talking about Poppy, who had paraded the idea around town for a week (Branch, avoiding everyone like always, hadn't heard her). She didn't manage to get inside, but she did manage to get herself caught in yet another of his traps. And, obviously, no parties were thrown that day. Poppy hadn't even been able to find his bunker. She only knew he had one because he'd told her that he lived in it for "safety" one day while encouraging all of them to do the same. She had then, excited to know something about Branch, spread the word while trying to find out exactly what a bunker was and where Branch's might be.
"What's going on? Are Satin and Chenille okay?" Branch asked, trying to keep the intense panic out of his voice and off his face.
"Oh, we're fine, Branch," Chenille assured him, her eyes closing halfway. "In fact, we're better than fine."
"We just found out that we aren't pregnant," Satin said. "Neither of us is."
Branch stared at them for a moment, stunned. "...That's what you guys are talking about!?" He threw his arms up, frustrated and relieved at the same time. "Oh, come on! I thought somebody was dying here!"
"Well, they aren't yet, but they might be!" Cooper said.
Branch stared at him uncomprehendingly for a moment. Then he realized what they were worried about. "Oh."
"Exactly! Guy and Biggie were bad enough! Just think of what could happen if you both start doing it!" Smidge said, horror-struck.
She could see it now: Some area in town stained magenta with Creek's blood while Branch was hauled off to jail for committing murder. If Creek egged Branch on too much, that would be the end result, and everyone knew it.
"I mean, we all know what you're capable of!" Biggie said, thinking of the fights he'd seen or heard about.
"Hey, wasn't I the one telling you and Guy to think about other people's feelings?" Branch pointed out. I'm not planning on fighting with Creek, okay?"
"You don't have to," Chenille said. "Creek will make you."
Everyone started talking worriedly then, including Poppy.
Branch looked around at them all, then held his hands up in a calming gesture. "Hold it, hold it, would you guys calm down?"
DJ took a deep breath, relaxing some. "He's right, y'all. What are we worried about? Cybil just said everythin's fine, so there's no need to panic anyway, right?"
Everyone agreed haphazardly after that.
"Yeah, you're right," Smidge said. "Poppy's gonna be okay. Right, Poppy?"
"Of course!" she answered, smiling confidently. "Cybil's really reliable, so if she says Creek's not gonna cause trouble, then Branch has no reason to take anger management!" She threw her arms up, smiling. (She was also pretty sure that the prediction she'd given Branch would come true any day now, especially since "soon" could mean anything when dealing with fortune-telling.) A second later, she added, "Well, at least, not yet." She laughed awkwardly.
Thinking about Branch's level of aggression, he could be intimidating at times. The other trolls would always be wary of him if he didn't learn to calm down and control himself soon. But that could wait for another day. First, she needed to start helping him build his trust in others back up, a task that could take quite a long time, all things considered. Then he'd need to learn to relax and feel safe from other threats. Then she would need to slowly reintroduce him to troll society by helping him be a better troll. Once that was all done, he should finally be calm enough to work on his anger issues, especially since most of it was related to fear and distrust. She expected this to take years, not days. But he'd heal in time. He had her to help him now, after all.
Branch stared at them for a second. At least he knew who they thought would cause problems—Creek. If they were worried about Creek picking fights and Branch responding to it, that was better than them thinking Branch would be picking fights. But the most annoying part of that was they believed the crazy so-called "psychic." She'd never been right in known memory. All of her "predictions" were based on things she'd heard or knew, and she often claimed to have seen something coming after it happened, relating it back to some vague prediction she'd given.
Come to think of it, knowing his luck, she'd do that if he ever decided to throw a party. She'd probably say it was because Poppy, who had gotten into his bunker when he saved her ten years ago, had made him happy, which made him want to throw a party.
Setting that aside and deciding that calming these guys down was more important than showing them Cybil was a fraud, Branch rolled his eyes and said nothing.
"Whew!" said Cooper, wiping sweat from his brow. "Thank goodness! Now that that's over, anyone wanna go skydiving?"
Hands shot up into the air in excitement, and a healthy mix of "ooh, I love that" and "I do, I do" could be heard from them all. The Snack Pack ran out, eager to get on that.
As Poppy made her way to the door, she turned back to the one troll who hadn't bolted, smiling. "Coming, Branch? It's gonna be a lot of fun!"
That was a sudden subject change.
"Uh...sure," he answered, following.
So the Snack Pack enjoyed some time together. And, for the first time in ten years, Branch joined them. The Snack Pack now had eleven members, not just ten. At least, they would in a few months, once Creek had fully recovered from his breakup.
