The Little Girl and the Ottomans
Chapter 15
Jenny had to be cautious. While she knew these beings were robots, she does not recall their model. Her scans don't indicate any sort of weapon or possible way to determine if they're good or bad. But this was her only shot, as far as she knew. To figure out where she is, she has to ask them. Nervous as she is, she gulps it down and comes out from behind the boulder.
She stepped into the light, but nobody took notice. They simply thought she was another robot there to work. Growing ever more confused, she walked right through, with nobody seeming to care that she existed. Jenny soon found herself standing at the metal door of a large building, which is probably this place's headquarters. The sound of the machinery inside caught her attention as a small camera exited a compartment above the door.
A small beam shone from the camera as it scanned every inch of her body. Jenny eyed it suspiciously, not knowing what it was trying to get from her. A beeping noise came from the camera. Worried she may have set off an alarm, she made sure all her weapons were fully functional. Luckily, the weapons had repaired since her arrival here, so she won't have trouble dealing with whoever comes her way.
Every screen that she could see flashed with a bright orange "WARNING!" sign. Her fingers twitched, anticipating a fight coming her way. The robots that worked inside the mine suddenly had a change of heart. Finally noticing her, as well as the flashing signs, they ran to her location. They pointed their arms at her, them being shaped like the end of a gun.
She swore she saw those weapons before. Jenny tried to explain that she wasn't coming for a fight, but they seemingly did not care. They followed a devious commander, and she could tell. Their eyes had a red hue to them. She tensed up, bursting into the air as they unleashed a volley of what looked like yellow balls, which vanished before they could hit their comrades.
Jenny slammed into the ground, sending some of these robots flying and creating a small crater where she stood. She formed a shield on her arm and blocked some of their "pellets" as she called them. She extended her arm out, gripping one of them by the neck before flinging him towards other robots coming her way. Another robot ran up to her and tried hitting her with an electric baton, but she ducked and kicked him into the wall.
Before she could slam her fist into the face of one of them, she suddenly became overloaded with dread. She froze in her tracks. She couldn't dare speak for some reason. What's going on!? She rarely had to deal with fear before, and when she did it wasn't to the point her entire body locked in place. It must be the work of some sort of machine!
"How intriguing...who knew an outdated robot such as yourself could still function!" a voice rang out from behind her. The other robots stood up once more and pointed their weapons at her. Still filled with fear, she couldn't move to see who her enemy was.
Before she knew it, electricity flowed through her body, so much that her vision went blank and her body went limp.
Ottoman Military Base:
Val sat up in her bed. Jenny hadn't returned from the portal. It's keeping her up at night. Where was Jenny? Was she still stuck in that alternate dimension? She had no idea, and it worried her to death. She had to figure out what. She had tried reactivating the portal and going back in, but everyone has been telling her no. Even those that were sympathetic and would've probably helped her told her not to go in.
It was only when she was about to close her eyes when something appeared. A bright flash occurred outside. She, however, was the only one to notice. She rubbed her eyes a bit, noticing a faint glow just around the corner through a window. She carefully got out of bed, making sure not to wake anyone up. She grabbed Dark's ring just in case as she walked out of the building.
Her eyes widened when she saw a portal. It wasn't just any portal, mind you. It looked exactly like the portal she went through...to get to that island. She felt herself grinning. She couldn't believe that they are in the same universe as the one they were in many months ago when she helped save this world from a demon. She has to meet her old friends and all the cool creatures there!
Oh wait...the Ottomans...if they were around during that time, wouldn't they have noticed? And the technology difference is staggering as well! One of the Ottoman soldiers did say it was 2382 right now, so it's possible that she's in the future of that world. Nevertheless, she wants to go see the island again. With Dark by her side, she shouldn't have to worry about animal attacks or anything. Later she can show the others.
Facing the portal and taking a deep breath, she steps into the portal, it closing behind her.
And, as if by coincidence, the base's alarms go off. Every soldier gets up from their seat or bed and heads to their battle stations. The others wake up, looking around frantically for what was happening. Owen was the first to notice what happened.
"Val!?" he yelled. She was not there. He and the others ran out of the barracks.
"Owen, where's Val!?" Claire asked.
"She's gone! Of all nights to suddenly vanished it had to be today!" Owen told her. He wanted to slam his fist into the wall, but he held himself back.
"Do you think we can track her?" Gem asked.
"I can," Angel interjected. She closed her eyes, concentrating hard. She held her hands close before opening them, revealing a basic and featureless holographic map of Earth. A small dot appeared, and that dot showed up on a place he did not expect to appear here.
"My god..."
"What is it?" Damien asked.
"That damn island is here!?" Owen says to himself.
"Wait, THE ISLAND that you and Val got trapped in!? I thought this Earth was a separate one!" Gem said, flabbergasted that the island existed.
"Definitely."
"And it seems Val went there through unknown means," Angel told them.
"Probably through a portal. That's how we got there last time," Owen determined.
"But how are we gonna get there in time? If you said that the dinosaurs there didn't go puppy-eyed for her, then she'd be in very serious danger," Gem asked.
"Hmm...Angel, you think you can magically rewire that one portal device to open on the island?" Quinn asked. Angel nodded, knowing she has done it before.
"Well good. Let's get to work fast and stealthy. I don't think they want us messing with that portal again," Owen ordered.
"The dinosaurs didn't listen to her!?" Rocco interjected, remembering what Gem said.
"Yeah, and I'm sure they'd find you a good snack!" Gem growled. Rocco shuddered at the thought of a dinosaur eating him as they ran to the portal room to get the portal device set up without anyone seeing them.
They have no idea how much the island, no, the world, has changed...all of it for the worse.
The Island:
Val stepped onto the dirt. She remembered that this was the exact spot she appeared in when she first came here. The area was once full of sand and stone but is now lush with life thanks to her. Birds chirped overhead as she reminisced on the good times she had before everything went downhill on her first stay.
She saw the giant stone pillar that is now eroded a bit, putting it at level with the trees. That was where her adventure began with those two. She misses them...she knows they are in a better place. That climactic battle at the end of her stay was something she couldn't forget. So the little girl decided to head to the pillar and stand atop it.
About halfway there, she stepped in some sort of liquid. Confused, she looked down at the black stuff and noticed a trail that led behind the pillar. She tilted her head in confusion. Was this area a place for oil? She had no idea until she found out. Boy, she wished she hadn't, for when she went around it.
"KYAA!" she screamed, stumbling and falling on her behind in fear.
Instead of the pillar leaking oil, it was one, no, two robots. They looked beaten up, shot at, and pretty much unfixable. She rubbed her eyes, hoping it was her mind making things up. This was not the case. It was the real deal. Why were robots here!?
They weren't the only robots there. It looks like a battlefield! Bodies of robots liter the surrounding landscape. Trees are either charred to a crisp, cut into pieces, or uprooted and used as what she presumed to be used as weapons. Since there are still tons of flames and smoke, the battle must be relatively recent. None of the robots had any life in them. They are most surely dead.
"W-Why is this happening? I thought..." Val couldn't make any word coming out of her mouth understandable at this point. She was not expecting today to be so..."bloody." She had so many questions and fears about what was happening. One answer seems to permeate through her mind.
That portal most likely meant that she was needed again like before.
"I-If I was called here, then I will try and help Zlarca win this fight!" she said to herself. She attuned her sensitive ears to see if she can pick up any war noises. She picked up a few. One voice did catch her attention. It sounded familiar. She had to check it out. She transformed into a hummingbird and took off towards the direction of the noises.
She just hopes whoever survived is alright.
