Chapter 5: 'It's not over'
His lids were heavy as if his dumbbells were weighing them down. It was like his skin was tightening but his internal organs were drowning in red hot poison. He was in pure agony as he looked down at his timer of 2 minutes. How was he suppose to do this again? He had to remind himself.
Elena or no Elena, this was his freaking game and he was in no way going down dead on the floor of one of his biggest jobs. He concentrated on the lock. Judging by the appearance, it looked electrical and locked with a password. So, he did what he knew best, he reached into his backpack for his insulating gloves and took out his Tesla coil box.
He lowered when he felt his shoulders starting to shake from the skin tightening, his time was running out as he inserted the coil in the small key hole in hopes off setting of the electric potential In the lock, he just couldn't even hold the box up. "Come on, damn it!" he cursed but he didn't move too quickly despite his hand shaking.
He pressed his ear to the cool metal of the safe and heard a small spark, like a little bomb set off.
Great.
He knew his wire was at high potential and he had less than a second to open the safe. He really hoped he reset the lock. He held the handle and pulled it with all his might, the safe opened with a click, he turned his torch on and looked at his time 49 seconds. He reached for the blue boxes that were set in the safe and opened one.
Diamonds!
He would have enough time to appreciate them later as he shoved them to his bag and closed the safe. His body was going to warm up and he had to get out. His legs could hardly move and he had to go past the lasers, he looked at his time, 33 seconds. He was almost screwed but then he felt like he saw someone at the entrance.
Fuck it! He was going to give his all, a sudden wave of energy and will to survive passed through his system as he jumped and did a cartwheel over the two beams of red he could see through the glasses he had on. His aim was for the window but as he jumped for it, he heard his name.
"Damon, stop!"
It was Elena. She was at the door. In the security's uniform. He frowned as he turned back to see, she seemed ready to run, "We have no time, follow me." She jumped to get to him and held his hand, making him run out with her. He followed her down the polished white corridors. Elena seemed unsure, dragging him then stopping as if contemplating, but then he coughed a but, crouching as if the pain was unbearable.
Elena hand would come to touch his back for comfort, they could hear steps as they ran, Elena pushed him to a room when they saw someone turn near by. Damon realized she had pushed him to a bathroom. He stayed back as Elena stayed outside. For a while she wasn't back and he thought she left him there for a minute.
He looked for escape in the bathroom. A window?
Elena walked in with another uniform, she looked like she was unsure as she looked down at the uniform and then him. He took off his glasses as she thrusted the clothes into his hands, "You need to throw up, right now!" she said with an urgency, but a very confused look, as if she was in a dilemma.
It was like he could see the worry on her face behind her dark mask.
"What?" that was all he could say. He hadn't realized yet how much in physical agony he was. His body felt like it was made up of acid. Her gloved hands cupped his face, "Please Damon, you need to vomit it out, you don't look okay." She looked surer now with her words than earlier. She pulled off his mask, wiping the sweat off his forehead. "Elena my-"
"I know. Just trust me. Now come on." She got a bit closer; Damon suddenly had this urge to see her face, feeling as if this would be the last time, he would be able to see her. He pulled off her mask, resting his forehead against hers, his body was aching now.
She was looking in his eyes with those pain-stricken doe eyes, murmuring her apologies for putting in this state of agony. "I promise I'll get you out of here. I am so sorry."
She said as her thumb brushed against his lower lip, his lips were going warm and dry and her eyes filled up in tears watching the life draining from him, how could she ever leave him alone and ever live with herself, he trusted her and she had to for once not disappoint, she pushed her thumb in his mouth, over his tongue and back, then adding another finger while her other hand wiping at the sweat on his forehead. He seemed to be half way unconscious as she did this, she pushed her fingers ahead to an uncomfortable level and felt him getting tense, when she his half dead body protesting, she pushed it further forward and that's when it happened.
She pulled her hand back as he pushed her away and nearly fell near the toilet seat as he threw up, it was like a bitter acid was leaving his body, actual snake venom would have been sweeter than this. He could hear the sizzling in his chest as he vomited his whole stomach out. When his ears could finally function again and his mouth wasn't the house of bitter after taste. He heard the water that Elena was running in the back so that it would muffle the sound of this all. Her hand was rubbing up and down on his back, he got up, shaking but a feeling less of a self destruct button and splashed water on his face and his mouth. Elena flushed the toilet and tossed the clothes to him. "Change up. I didn't just hit someone in the head for nothing."
He nodded, she patted his shoulder and he gave a thumbs up as he quickly changed into the security squad's clothes, he grabbed his mask and his bag. She turned to him, "The alarm didn't go off, as long as no one recognises us we can get out of here easily." She put her hair back in her bun and covered her head with a cap, "We can't be seen together, okay? You're on. Your duty is front block. "she winked.
He rolled his eyes, "We don't have time for games." She but her lip, taking a step back, "This way it would be safer. I'll get out of here and you can go there." She took the bag from him, "I'll carry it so you can go down easy."
"Elena that's insane, stop it. We're going together, there is no reason for us to not go together." He scolded.
He was starting to feel a bit better, Elena pulled out a water bottle from her bag and gestured him to drink. "I am using this window to get out of here." He pointed at the back. Elena tried again "Heights,"
He held her hand, "Now is not the time to throw a fit."
He opened the window carefully and opened his backpack for some climbing rope with closed hooks. He attached them to the window and held the ends tight, "Come on after me." He went first and waited for her to follow behind him so he could cover her and thus save her if she fell. Elena held tightly as the cold air of the night hit them and she closed her eyes not wanting to look down, "Oh God, distract me."
"Really, after all those training sessions?" he asked disappointed. She groaned at his 'lecturing' tone.
"Hmm but what I really want to start by is asking why you never helped me open the safe." He said holding her ankle for a second, she kicked slightly with a shriek. "I did. I unlocked it before you were even there."
"No, you didn't even tell me the password." He said as If the thought was absurd. She huffed, "There was none, I shut off the system Damon." She looked back from her shoulder, he had stopped, looking up at her in confusion, "I shut off the system with the black box."
"You what?" she snapped.
At that exact moment an alarm went off in the building, she gritted her teeth looking at him and for the first time he was considering kicking himself in the butt. "I set it off, didn't I."
"Hurry!" she was tempted to shout. He held her ankle and pulled at her, the jolt was so unexpected that a slight scream left her lips as she slid down, Damon had made some distance between himself and the rope and held her there, against his body, "Hold on tight. We're getting the hell out of here." She held on tightly to his neck as he expertly climbed down the rope and jumped as they n neared the ground. They could hear steps as they set their foot on the ground and saw a panicked guard rush there, holding his gun up, "Stop right there, hands where I can see them come on!" he growled. Elena was standing behind him as he slowly rose up his hands. He looked over his shoulder at her, indicating with his shrug for her to toss something at the guy and distract him, he had trained her for this but she stood frozen. He gritted his teeth; she was probably scared.
He turned back to the man and kicked his feet at a price of wood lying on the ground at the guard's hand, his weapon flew away to drop some where in the dark grass and before he could grab it, Damon kicked him straight on his neck, knocking him down. Elena was already running towards their getaway car. He ran after her, watching back. Soon more guards will show up and they needed to get away. Elena jumped into the passenger's seat and opened the door for him. He got in the car and tossed the bag to her, she was looking back at the building, shouting with anxiety and excitement, "Drive. Drive. Drive." She repeated in a high-pitched voice. He started the car and took a sharp reverse as they raced out of there. They'd have to get miles away and probably get rid of this car for good.

They had been on the road for three hours after they changed cars, Elena had offered to drive requesting he should rest but he never would let her drive one of his beauties if he was not on a skateboard following behind. She had asked him to roll the top back and was singing along to the song on the radio, yeah. He even let her turn on the radio. He was actually enjoying watching Elena ruin every song that was playing not to forget the half gallon of water she had made him drink. "Stop!" He said giving her leg a slap when she stood up on her seat, she stumbled with a "Whoa." and fell over his lap, "Look out!" she shrieked. Her head hit the wheel and he laughed pulling her quickly to his chest to handle it, "Hey you alright?" he asked rubbing the side of her head, "Never been better actually. I love concussions." She said as she sat up slightly and ran her hand over his head, pushing his hair back, looking at him dreamily, he warned, "You're blocking my view, darling."
She giggled as he tried to look over her tiny head and then back at her, the road was deserted. "Well which view would you prefer." She raised a brow. He rolled his eyes at the 'Charade' reference. "The road that takes me to the hotel where I get to explore every square inch of your body with my tongue. Unless you...have a better idea obviously."
His words heated her right up and she bit her lip, hiding a blush. She pulled away to her seat and was looking at him now, lost in her own head. The humour lost from her. She suddenly looked a bit confused and almost guilty as she just rested her head against her headrest and watched him. He didn't let it bother him but soon he had this weird feeling about it, "You regret it? What happened between-" he took a shot in the dark.
She sighed, "No uh of course not, I usually don't go after what I want like that. It's very toxic for me."
He chuckled, "You realize we just robbed 250 million dollars, right?"
She looked up with a laugh, "Yeah but- but that's different. 250 million don't exactly talk or walk or sleep or just –,"
"Doesn't have expectations." He completed for her.
She palmed her face, "Damon, I think you're going to change your mind sooner or later."
"Or later." He cocked his head and raised a brow, "You take me for the heartbreaker type?" He smirked, she shoved at his shoulder, "More like bone- breaker, watch the road grandma." he scoffed at her as he continued to drive.
They stopped at a Hotel and booked a room. Once they got inside, Damon tossed the bag on the bed, "Tomorrow morning I am putting these in my special safe until this whole thing blows over and then we can find a buyer. Preferably from overseas."
"What's the rush?" she said lying back and unzipping the bag, she took out one of the blue boxes and opened to see the five red diamonds in it, "Wow." She admired their pure red colour and how they resembled fresh blood droplets that have been frozen. Her fingers ran over them, feeling their cool texture. Damon crawled up the bed and took the box from her hand tossing it away and turning her body to him, she shivered underneath his touch "It's here to stay, so stop salivating and get in the shower. I am going to order us some dinner." She sighed and circled her arms around his neck a bit reluctantly, "I love the offer but you could be nicer, you know?"
His eyes narrowed, "I am saving nice for later. Come on, get up." He pushed her to sit up, she let out a frustrated groan, he frowned holding her wrist again, "You okay? Is this still about me changing my mind?"
She looked away and shook her head, "Last night was great but I-,"
He cupped her face, "I am not going to give you a reason to doubt this." She shook her head but Damon leaned forward, invading her personal space, "You're searching I can see it, you want me to say the wrong thing or do the wrong thing but what if I didn't, Elena." She looked up to his beautiful blue eyes drowning her in their depth, "I haven't thought that far."
"Exactly, your plan doesn't have the alternative where the guy actually comes through. I know these walls well, they were around me but I trust you." He caressed her cheek smoothly, she leaned into his palm, her eyes grew soft, "You're amazing." She whispered. He smiled, "I know." He tilted his head and smirked, then gesturing the direction of the bathroom. A reluctant smile was on her face as she turned around to look at him before going inside.
Damon let out a sigh of relief. He got up quietly and picked up the blue discarded box. He put in the bag and kept the bag in the cupboard.

When Elena opened the door to the bathroom, a gasp left her mouth. There was dark in the room except the candles in the small glasses, scattered around perfectly. A pathway of rose petals under her feet that led to the small table in the middle of the room. She removed the towel from her hair and ran her hand through it, looking around for him. "Damon?" she said as she walked on the rose petal pathway towards the table. "Awfully long shower." She heard his voice from behind her and turned to see him, standing there. His hair falling on his forehead in a boyish way that made her heart skip a beat. His eyes looked a lighter blue in the golden lighting that the room had. His hair and his eyebrows darker. "What is all this?"
He walked around the table, "Oh you know- I just wanted to show how sooner and later looks like." He pulled the chair for her and gestured for her to sit, she looked down at her silver and black dress slip dress that she had wore, under the impression that she would be the one to seduce him. "A few months ago, we were at a coffee shop unaware of how much a perfect match we were. Then you proposed the idea and well-"
"You said no." Elena completed. He sat down on his seat, "I was quick to make that decision, I hadn't seen it all yet." He held her hand over the table, "I know we make a good team but that is just one of the many reasons this will work." He laced their fingers, "You have no idea how much I want you."
She looked around the beautiful room and he caught on Immediately, "This is nothing Elena. Just like you, I want something for myself after a very long time other than a thrill. It's more and I'd do anything for it to stay."
She smiled at his honest tone, his voice dripped with affection and she found herself losing all over again. "What if this is a thrill as well?"
He looked a bit taken aback, even hurt. "If I wanted a thrill it would be some rich socialite I'd con- A girl like Katherine Pierce, maybe. Not Elena Gilbert, not you."
He didn't let her hand go yet, "You know when you first dressed up to see that manager, I couldn't take my eyes off you throughout that whole thing, and you were on his arm seducing him and I wished I'd be him. Even if that meant I'd have to be a fool."
Her lips parted in surprise at his confession, he reached for her empty glass of Champagne and poured her the bubbly liquid, "but then we got home and you changed into those sweats and washed your hair. You were so tired you passed out on the couch when you were watching TV and I still wanted you."
She pursed her lips "We were fighting that night." He shrugged, "I knew you were angry and all I wanted to do was make it up to you for being a jerk when it wasn't even your fault. You were curled up on the couch. All pouty, expecting an apology. That's when I first noticed how cute you looked when you were sleepy and plotting a murder at the same time."
She blushed looking away, "I wasn't plotting your murder. I merely entertained the idea once when you fed me to the dogs."
"And when I made you run 6 miles." He raised a brow.
"Maybe."
He laughed, "A sick part of me loves when you have that 'plotting murder' look. I will go to lengths to see it."
She tilted her head, "That's not the reason I ran six miles, is it? Or I'll give you that murderous look right now."
He winked, "You'll never know."
She ran her other hand through her messy half dried hair, "You're lucky you already swept me off my feet with this dinner or you'd have the kick to the balls sequel situation." She put some shrimp salad in her plate and bit her lip looking down,
"So I succeeded in sweeping you off your feet?" His intense gaze made her flush, did she just say that? Had her mind admitted defeat against her heart that soon? It was like momentarily relief that her mind wasn't giving her a million reasons to shoot this down.
When he noticed how weird she was acting, he raised a brow, she smiled " I am a bit nervous, I haven't dated like this before."
"Ohohoho don't tell me I am your first boyfriend." He coughed. She chuckled, "Are you? My boyfriend?" what was this, she wanted so bad to allow herself and lose herself in their playful situation yet she had chains on her mind and body.
He thought she looked adorable when she asked that fidgeting a bit, "You'd rather call me something else?"
"No no uh I'd love to- I mean I am honoured. Fuck! What am I suppose to say, damn it." She said reaching for her glass of bubbly. Damon laughed watching her go red and then pale within the span of two seconds. He knew he had a certain effect on women but watching that on Elena was pure clean pleasure. She took two deep breaths, composing herself, "Boyfriend is great. Not that we are going to tell anyone because are lives are a secret." Her heart gave her reasons, who cares about labels when no one was hear to read them?
"It's refreshing to see you without a script. Very humanly and amusing." He joked. She palmed her face, "I know I suck. But I know you understand, since you can always read me so clearly," she reached her other hand for him, "I passed out on the couch and you put your quilt on me. When I woke up, I kept thinking about you all day, even when you were being a jerk at training." She finally let her heart win for a moment. Telling him things she felt which she never let her tongue share with anyone. He got up from the chair and walked across, making her stand, "But I haven't stopped thinking about you at all, it's what's on my mind all the time. You can't deny what it is either, it's all over your face."
"I don't regret what happened, in fact it was the best night of my life and If I could choose differently it would still happen." She cupped his face, "I don't deny it." She leaned in to kiss him, he eagerly took her lips in a kiss, wrapping his arms around her and securing her small body to himself. He picked her off the floor and she broke away from the kiss with a giggle, "I almost died tonight." His voice suddenly serious as he looked up at her, her smile faded and she cupped his face, shaking her head slightly, she wouldn't have let him die, she wasn't that cruel, a part of her had started to love him and that part would always cloud her better judgement, he continued, "My only regret would have been not seeing you a last time."
His words rung in her ears to amplify her guilt, what if she had been late? Damon would have been dead or hurt. He would be rotting, would the money make her happy then? No way I'm hell would it even mean anything then because it didn't even mean anything now. All she wanted was his attention, his love and his affection. This was so dangerous; she could see her priorities shifting and it terrified her. Suddenly his life meant so much more.
She lowered her head and kissed him, her lips brushing against his softly, she moaned when his tongue rolled over her lower lip and moved into her mouth, she felt she was weightless and in the clouds when he kissed her back so passionately, taking her to bed and laying her body down like it was the softest thing on planet. He crawled up her body leaving a trail of kisses up her bare tan skinned thigh to the side of her body. She reached forward and wrapped her arms around him, "kiss me." She couldn't believe that this was real, that the look in his eyes meant acceptance, comfort and love. She needed it all. No one had ever given it to her like this. She truly craved it.
He unzipped her dress and she got out of it. Wearing a matching set of black lace. He took in her beauty, just mentally kicking himself at how he never noticed that she was everything he wanted. He appreciated her being in every way. From her beautiful body to the complexities of her mind. Her mystery and innocence had bewitched him and he didn't care for thinking straight anymore. His fingers ran through her long hair as he held her chin between his thumb and his finger and brought her lips to his. Every kiss was like an epiphany. It felt amazing when she got on top of him tearing away his shirt and helping him get out his jeans before straddling him, her cheeks were flushed as she wrapped her hand around his cock and stroked it as her hips rolled over him as well. He stopped her and leaned his head in her neck, sucking on the junction of her neck and shoulder, "Lie down, beautiful." He said he gently backed her to lie against the satin sheets. He kissed her once more and then pulled away to look into her eyes, her legs wrapped around him, making him settle between her legs as her fingers ran through his rough hair, she threw her head back as he placed kisses against her neck down to her collar bones. Their laboured breathing the only sound between them, his soft hair brushed against her full breasts as he licked at her nipple, sucking on it briefly before he let his breath brush against it. She moaned begging him to do it again by her tone, clutching at his hair to keep him where she needed as her body coiled against him like a wire. Her tongue rolled down against her ribs, his lips pressing soft kisses as she shivered, his fingers found their way to her opening, slipping in and his thumb brushed against her swollen bundle, "Damon please... please." She arched up against him. He looked up at her tensed face , knowing what she wanted but he continued to move his fingers inside her and moved down to add his tongue to the mix. "Oh no!" Elena let out a sigh as she threw her head back. He paused, "No?" his lips brushed against her inner thigh and then her clit. Her head was all sorts of mess, "Stop playing." She cried.
"Oh but you love games." His voice husky. "And I love playing them." He said as his tongue rolled perfect over her wet heat, his fingers curled inside her and she flew to her release in a matter of moments. She could see fireworks in her vision, he kissed up her body, wanting to see her face, panting she put her hand on his shoulder, he leaned down kissing her softly, "Mmmm I think I have peeked tonight. The diamonds and now-,you," His eyes roamed all over her face as if searching for something, with just a slight movement he slipped inside her to the hilt. Her mouth opened in a small cry. She held on to his shoulders as he moved against her slowly at first. Her nails dug into him as she wrapped her legs firmly around him, "Ah- God! Damon- need, uh-more."
He nodded and moved faster and deeper inside her. He held her legs and moved her up to his shoulders. Her nails raked down his arms moaning his name louder. His lips brushed against hers as she reached her climax and dropped against her pillow. He released inside her, still moving, riding out the waves of pleasure. His head dropped on her chest.
After a good ten minutes, he looked up at her and she gave a half gasp and laugh as she looked down at him, "hey."
He had a silly smile on his face that she hadn't seen but it looked genuine and took her breath away, "I have something for you." He whispered. Elena bit her lip as he untangled his legs from her and moved, she sat up and waited as he reached for the bag, he had packed for himself before they had left the apartment. He had something hidden in his fist as he came back nervously and sat near her, she was on her knees on the bed, waiting. He opened his closed fist and in the palm of his hand lied the pink diamond ring. She gulped looking at it. "That's yours."
"Yours." He said as he held her hand and moved her so she was lying against his chest, he wrapped his arms around her and held her hand, slipping the ring on her finger. "Don't freak out it's not a proposal. It is just a promise."
"Promise?"
"Promise that this is real. I plan on bringing you every jewel you set your gaze on. Anything you want." He kissed the ring on her finger, she looked over her shoulder, into his eyes, her heart was beating so fast. She slightly turned to wrap an arm around him, "No, I can't accept this Damon. It obviously means something to you."
He nodded, "It does but so do you."
"I know you care about me, you don't have to do this." It was like his 'care' switch had flipped and all he could do was shower her with affection, why did it all feel like stealing, Elena swore she never felt more of a thief than now.
"It's not like I can wear this and besides, it's our promise." He rubbed his thumb against the diamond on her finger. She licked at her lips, "So will the ring just fly back to you the second we break up?" she chuckled trying to lighten the mood but her question was really her curiosity.
He didn't look up from her hand, "It doesn't represent our relationship. It represents that I trust you. That I will do anything to protect you. That I will always choose you, over and over." He kissed her cheek, "And you will me, right?"
She gave a hesitant nod, "It's pink." He chuckled.
She rested her head against his shoulder, "Can we just stay here forever and pretend that we are some couple on staycation."
"As long as you want." He kisses the top of her head, "And what are you in this alternative reality?"
She smiled, "I am a college student, dreaming of going to med school. You're my boyfriend- umm you own a – a car manufacturer."
He was impressed at her deduction of his passion for cars. He shook his head and laughed, "And we are here why?"
"It's our two-year anniversary." She said looking back at him, "You just proposed."
He held her hand and laced their fingers, "Yes, that I did. I could never do better than a doctor. After all I am lame in alternative world. Trophy husband and all."
"Shhh If I love you, you are not lame." She said nuzzling his neck. He looked down at her, his eyes boring into hers, leaning down, the tips of their noses touching, "I love you too." He kissed her softly, tugging at her swollen lower lip. She slightly pulled away. "Whose ring is this?" she asked curiously.
"My mother's." His voice was above a whisper, he kissed her again, then parted a bit to look at her, "I thought no one would wear it ever again, but here you are."
"Oh-" her voice trailed off
"The woman from the photo, tell me about her." She said and pushed him to lie down, she rested her head against his chest. He brushed her hair with his fingers, "A few years ago, we lived in Mystic Falls. It's a small town in Virginia. We were one of the founding families. My father was a very rich businessman, my grandfather had given him the company after he married my mother and but he was a very bad husband."
She looked up at him as he breathed out, "An even worse father."
"I don't want you to feel sorry for me." He said when he saw her eyes softening more. She bit her lip, "Okay."
"He had a bunch of affairs. He was gambling, he was just- blowing up our money. Then he met this woman. Cecelia, she was half his age, we all knew what it was. She was his sole beneficiary when he died mysteriously." He huffed. "I was starting college; I didn't even want anything to do with him and his money my grandfather had left me some money for my education separately. But she couldn't handle it, my mother, she killed herself. I was just coming back for her; I had bought us a place."
Damon remembered that day, everyday. His biggest regret was leaving his mother after the funeral. That night he had drove back to town, when his mother had called him, drunk, "I just talked to the lawyers, we can't claim insurance in any way, even if we do, it's not enough to save the company."
"I don't need the God damn company." He had seethed. "Damon what about the debt, your father committed fraud, the FBI was looking into him. I can't do anything!" she shouted, "You don't deserve this my son, you don't deserve another disappointment."
"Mom, hey, can you calm down. Look you need to stop with the bottles." He was so annoyed at his train wreck of a mother, how could she even cry over that cold-hearted son of a bitch, "I will. I am sorry, Damon. You're better off without me."
"What?" He didn't understand but something didn't feel right. He heard the phone hit the floor and her cries, "Mom? Stop what you're doing, I can fix this! Mom?" he shouted desperately speeding up the car over the bridge. He heard a shot and a scream. "No. No. No. No please- Mom!" he cut the call and called the house help, "Julia! My mother shot herself, check on her, right now."
"Mr. Salvatore, the door is jammed."
"Break it. Get someone."
"She's- she's dead." The woman said. His eyes widened in panic and he rushed the car. The golden stream of lights of his car landed on a car coming his way, he did a sharp turn, driving off the bridge.
Elena pursed her lips, "They don't know you lived."
"Pronounced me dead after four months of search. All the money left was paid back for debts." He murmured, "I am okay being pronounced dead, I don't want anything to do with my life. That life. They both screwed me up." He rolled his eyes, "But the rest is all me. I was always good at stealing. When you have a controlling abusive father, that's the best training."
"You still love your Mom."
"Yeah I do. She was a coward but she was a victim and as much as I blame her, I can't judge her because I was afraid of my father as well." he reached for her, cupping the side of her face, "I never want to be scared again."
"Mmhmm." She said as she kissed his lips, when's he parted, he was looking at her like expecting her to share as well. She sighed," I am a runaway. I left my house, it was a mistake." She confessed, "My house was screwed up and I just left but I had no money. Kai took me in and then I started doing this."
"you don't expect me to believe that a girl like you can just so easily switch it off." He arched a brow. "A girl like me?" she tried to change the subject. "Elena, I want to know you." He tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear, "I won't hurt you; I promise." It was like he knew what she wanted to hear, a voice was constantly telling her that he would change, just like everyone, just like her Dad, she was his whole world but then he stopped caring. Not even the slightest.
She huffed as she rolled over and sat up, "There is nothing to say, we both are horrible people regardless of it all."
"I know that." He said wrapping his arms around her, "But I need to understand why is that." She looked over her shoulder at him, "What difference does it make Damon? Some stuff happened to us but in turn we did worst things. You can't make me feel like all this is- not my fault."
"I didn't say that Elena. But do you think that I can judge you? I have no ground to stand on, one of the reasons that I can see myself with you is because- I don't hate myself around you. I finally feel like I can stop and breathe." His voice above a whisper against her ear, "I couldn't stop and I was so restless. I had no reason, you have no idea how much purpose you give me."
She turned slightly to kiss him, moaning against his mouth, "Mmmm you did save nice for later." He chuckled, "You can't distract me with your pretty little mouth." He pulled back before she could kiss him again, he gave her a warm smile, "I just want to know more about you. Actually I want to know everything."
She leaned in to his touch and sat back against his chest, nodding, "Okay."
She looked up at his face "I am a runaway. Like I said I didn't want to live with my mother, my father left when I started high school. He and my mom had some problems but my dad loved me. So I left to find him, but he was a changed man and he wanted nothing to do with me. I was surprised how he changed so much in two years. He was with another woman and they were expecting a baby, I remembered him buying me gifts and loving me so much but this time he said that I was just a reminder of the biggest mistake of his life. My mother. She ruined our lives." She turned to him, "I never went home, she never even tried to look for me. No one wanted me." Tears flooded her eyes as she wrapped her arms around him, "Not her, not him. I didn't even have to be pronounced dead; it was like I didn't exist for them." She sobbed, he patted the back of her head, "It's their loss you know that right?" she shrugged, "How would I know that?" she let it all out, "I was in streets, hungry, cold and alone. I was all alone like that for a week until I came across this woman. She said she'd help me get a job, I trusted her and it was the biggest mistake of my life. She dressed me and – well I was sent to entertain some guys. They took advantage of me." She rubbed her head against his chest. "How was it their loss when I was the one who was alone and messed up? All I wanted was a family." He wanted to say she never had to be alone again, that he would be hers forever but he couldn't. He wanted to let her say it all.
"I don't even remember how I escaped but I did. I met Kai and he asked me to trust him. I had no choice. He encouraged me to call my mom and I did, I told her everything and you know what she said?" she sniffled. "she said it was all my fault." Elena shrugged biting her lip, Damon pulled away to cup her face, "I never wanted to see her again after that."
His thumb wiped at her cheeks, "I won't ever do that to you, Elena. You exist to me. Only you do and I don't want to know anyone else."
She nodded and kissed him, he pulled her closer to his body, wrapping his arms around her. She pulled away, "I love you, always remember that."
"I love you too." He said the words with ease and no hesitation at all. His eyes closed as he breathed in from her hair and she rested against him, "I wish I could let myself believe us." She murmured. He nodded, "Believing is hard. You'll believe us one day, I'll believe us one day."
She rubbed her face against his side, "at least you try."
"If I don't try I have nothing left but planning fucking burglaries." He brushed his fingers in her hair, "I want to be alive again, I want you to call me by my real name every where. No one tracking us, no diamonds to hunt. I want to want that life."
Elena felt like he was saying whatever she was thinking, at least Damon was trying to want something, she couldn't even dare to, every word of truth she spoke to him felt like it was burrowed, every moment felt like it was last, "My dad gave me that necklace, it was a promise as well. He'd always be there for me."
He opened his eyes at that and looked down at her, she was looking at her ring in doubt. "I love you Elena, he was searching for his happiness but you are my happiness." He affirmed, "My promise is my heart at your feet."
, she looked down at her ring and then back at him, it was all so foreign for her. Someone loving her, this was unreal. She was waiting for this to be over any second like it did with anything good in her life. He loved her? How would she ever believe that? Why did she have such blind trust on him? She told him her real name, her whole life, how could he have so much control already. "I wish I never break it."
"I wish you never do." He grinned. She wrapped her arm around his torso, "That's a lot of pressure though."
"You know I am not easy." He winked and gave her gentle kiss on the top of her head.

Damon opened his eyes, the sunlight was interrupting his slumber, he had a long night- the burglary, Elena- oh Elena, how she had completely brought him to his knees. He looked around in bed to see she wasn't there. The water in the bathroom was on and he smirked at the idea. He walked over the for and knocked, "How about you and I do some good for the planet and save some water?" he asked.
When he didn't get a response, he turned the knob, the door opened and he got in, no one was in there and the water from the tub was spilling. "Elena?" he looked around the suite. "Baby?" she couldn't just leave without letting him know. He walked to towards the door and opened it, checking in the corridor, failing to find her and coming back in.
He seemed to be all alone here. Where was she? He stopped looking when he saw a shining diamond on the nightstand. He walked over and picked it up, his ring and a letter. It didn't feel right, he didn't want to open this letter and read something that he had been dreading the moment his eyes had softened for her, the moment she had taken over every thought of his mind. He feared this, she did say that she didn't trust anyone. And he remembered saying that a person like that shouldn't be trusted, then why did he?

You love me because you think I am like you, but the way I see it, I am nothing like you. You are a better person than I am. This wasn't what I had planned. Half a year ago when I started following you, I had planned on learning from you, using you to my advantage of the robbery, would you believe me if I told you that I could have killed you for the money? That's how cruel the world has made me. I gave you a larger dose, I tried to think that a girl like me wasn't affected by the best night of life, wasn't affected by our connection. I over compensated by planning to over dose you but then I'd just chicken out of my own plan, my conscience was your gift to me. Over and over I changed my plan to make you a priority. It was the first time in my life I was trying to care for you. I thought you'll be sick and arrested while I grab my bag but you made me so weak, I couldn't even do that. I couldn't leave you there, I couldn't run away and be okay with the fact that you got caught. But you were so beautiful, so warm to me that every second I wanted to drown and die for even thinking what I thought. I fell for you. Every day, every hour and every second. When you'd touch my skin or massage my body, when you'd show me the tiniest form of approval. The more I fell the more it scared me. I deviated from my plan, I found excuses for you. It scared me that you changed me so much.
My mind and my heart are in a constant fight whenever I am with you and I am not strong enough to fight for you always. What if I screw it up? I won't ever have losing you ruin me; I choose to let you go. I'll love you forever, that's the only promise I can make to you. I can't take your ring with me, that's the only diamond which is off limits.
Only yours,
E.
He stared at the letter in disbelief, no- she couldn't do this to him. It was like he had willingly wore the dark glasses of denial.
She never made a promise.
She didn't say anything on the ear piece, she wanted to get him caught, then she saved him, she wanted to leave him but he was dying in her arms and that 'wakened' her conscience. She argued about going from the front door, she wanted to abandon him and run away with the diamonds.
He remembered her words from when they were trying to leave after the robbery.
The lust in her eyes when she looked at the red diamonds. Her hesitation all night, she didn't want to try. 'I wish I could let myself believe us.'
'It's pink.' No promise. Even after he asked her to trust him.
"I never change my plans,"
No promise at all.
'at least you try' it sounded like a mock now because all he could hear was 'I don't want to try at all, you don't deserve it. I don't care.' Every warm smile she had given him morphed into twisted grins with alternate evil motives. That heartless bitch.
He turned towards the cupboard and opened it, the bag was gone, she took all the diamonds, that is why she was so nervous when he mentioned he was going to put it in a secret safe, he hissed, "That bitch."
He rushed downstairs to the lobby, "My wife, Penelope, when did she leave?" he asked the receptionist. She blinked several times as I'd surprised, "Five in the morning, she said it was an emergency and that'd she'd be taking the car."
The car, his fucking car. She took off leaving the letter, taking his damn loot and fucking with his head, did she think he would sit back and do nothing. She toyed with him, made him think she was worth his trust and his love. He opened up to her about things no one knew. He wanted to be better for her, he wanted to bring the world to her feet. He would kill or die for her and this is what he gets? Looks like she wasn't the perfect balance of innocence and evil after all. She was pure dark and disgusting evil. Even a thief has some rules.
He wasn't going to live his whole life thinking she won. He didn't care if Elena Gilbert was a character, if she had ever had a shred of love for him. He was going to find her and he was going to kill her.
He was so going to track her down and kill that bitch if it was the last thing he does.
He tore the letter in several pieces. They fell on the floor. Worthless, unkind words.
Just like his heart.
"This isn't over, Elena"
(TVD-TVD-TVD-TVD)
Elena had been on the road for hours; her map was sprawled across the seat with some snacks. This had been the plan all along, she wasn't supposed to make him throw up the medicine, he was supposed to be arrested but she got selfish and gave herself another night with him. He made her fall in love with himself and she almost considered being the Bonnie to his Clyde but that wasn't the plan.
She never deviated from the plan twice.
After all they were two extreme wrongs who would never make a right. One day maybe he would forgive her. One day he would understand that she wasn't ready to feel like she deserved it. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she gripped the wheel tightly, she had been crying all morning. She had to do this. She already had the weight of a broken promise on her neck, she didn't want another one around her finger, she knew how much it hurt when those damn promises broke, it hurt when her dad broke his and it would hurt worse If she broke his.
This was new, he didn't really love her and he'd forget her soon, but what if she gives in and they build a life together, what if one day her evil wins and she breaks her promise. What if he replaced her? What if she isn't enough anymore. If only she could believe. The fact that she grabbed the bag and ran away was enough evidence that she wasn't right for him, but a voice inside her spoke that she just had needed a reason to walk away from the most vulnerable moments, from the riskiest question.
She didn't care about the diamonds anymore which made her angry. She wanted to care about money but she didn't. But now that she'd done this, there was no going back. He was probably up, hurt at her betrayal, regretting the moment he met her, he would hate her now, the thought made her cry.
She reached for her sunglasses, she wiped her eyes and put them on, putting the radio on loud. Her notepad of victims had another name crossed out now, 'Damon Salvatore'
Onto the next target.
