Chapter 1 – Strange Happenings
(3rd POV)
Harry sighed as he sat down at the table in the kitchen of Grimmauld place. So far, his summer had been better than expected. He had spent a grand total of two weeks at his aunt and uncles before Mad-Eye Moody, Nymphadora Tonks and Remus Lupin picked him up and flew him to the dreary home of his godfather, Sirius Black. After that, they had spent the last three weeks catching up and had ridding the house of pests which had taken up residence whilst Sirius was in Azkaban.
"You ok there, Pup?" Harry jumped slightly in his seat as Sirius came fully into the kitchen.
"Padfoot! Where have you been all week? I've been so worried you had been arrested again!" Harry jumped up to hug his godfather tightly, enjoying the squeeze he received back. It was not often that he received such honest affection from others, so he basked in it now, knowing that when he returned to school, it wouldn't be so freely available.
Sirius in turn, embraced his godson tightly, having missed such affections whilst locked away. "I'm sorry for worrying you pup, but I have some good news. Come sit with me, I'll have Kreacher make us tea."
The house-elf appeared, without being summoned, to begin making the tea. That was another thing that had changed in the last three weeks, Sirius had spoken to Kreacher about his behaviour and made Kreacher realise he could respect him, despite his former mistress's influence. Ever since, there had been a much better atmosphere around the large home, and the cleaning had gone much smoother with Kreacher helping to evict the more determined pests.
Harry and Sirius sat in comfortable silence, waiting for their tea, Harry tapping his foot nervously and Sirius barely containing his excitement.
Kreacher placed their tea in front of them and bowed before apparating out again. Both males blew on their drink, before Harry cracked.
"So whats up Siri?" Harry glanced at his godfather over his mug.
Sirius grinned excitedly before blurting out, "I'm coming with you to Hogwarts!"
"What? No, you can't! Someone will you see you and you'll get sent back to prison." Harry jumped up from his seat in a panic, he couldn't lose his godfather after just getting to know him.
Sirius stood up much calmer, resting his hands on his godson's shoulders to soothe him. "Harry, Harry, calm down. It's ok. Let me finish." He gently pressed onto Harry's shoulders, pushing him gently back into his chair. He then sat back down himself, pulling his chair closer, holding onto Harry's hands.
"The reason I've been gone all week is because I've been at the Ministry," Harry's eyes widened, and he went to speak before Sirius cut him off. "No let me finish, it's ok. I was at the ministry, getting my name cleared. I don't know why but Lucius Malfoy decided to help me clear my name, maybe some weird family loyalty or something. I don't really care why because he did it. He got me a trial, under Veritaserum, with Madam Bones, Kingsley Shacklebolt, the Minister and the Head of the Unspeakables. After realising that I wasn't given a trial originally, they all agreed to listen to what we had to say, and after a week of questions upon questions, they have officially cleared me of all charges and reinstated me as your Guardian."
"Oh my God! Siri! Are you saying I never have to go back? We get to be…a family?" Harry started excitedly, before finishing with a whisper, timidly expressing his greatest wish.
Sirius smiled gently at the boy, and spoke seriously, "Yes Harry. We can be a family now, like we said all those months ago. You can move in here whenever you're ready and if you don't want to go back to the Dursley's you don't have to."
Harry's eyes filled with tears of relief at the thought of never returning to Privet Drive, and Sirius swiftly pulled him into another tight embrace.
The next day Harry and the newly pardoned Sirius prepared to leave for Diagon Alley. The pair has spent the rest of the night discussing the implications of Sirius no longer having to hide from the rest of the magical world. They had decided that the next day they would go to Gringotts to sort Harry's official guardianship, collect supplies both would need for the new school year and to get the necessary items Harry would need to live full-time in the wizarding world.
"Ready to go Pup?" Sirius shrugged on his robe and looked over to his godson.
"I think so." Nervously, Harry tugged on the sleeve of the robe his godfather had shrunk down to fit him until they could go to Madam Malkins to get him his own robes.
The pair checked they were presentable one last time before stepping out into the late summer air. With summer drawing to a close, the temperature was dropping, and the leaves were beginning to turn red. The park opposite the terraced home was filled with children enjoying their last few days of freedom, parents sat on benches around them, disinterestedly on their phones.
Sirius held his wand up, calling for the Knight Bus and the pair stood silently as they waited.
"Welcome to the Knight Bus, emergency transport for the stranded witch or wizard. My name is Stan Shunpike and I will be your conductor this morning." The conductor read his notecard once the Knight bus had pulled up, before looking up at the pair on the pavement, his eyes widening comically upon seeing his new passengers. "You-You're Sirius Black! It's true! And Harry Potter!"
"Mr Shunpike." Sirius handed the shocked man a Galleon and five Sickles for both of their bus fare, pulling Harry onto the bus, and into some seats.
"Wh-Where to Mr B-Black?" The still stunned conductor asked as he walked through the bus to his own seat.
"Diagon Alley please." Sirius and Harry sat, the other passengers of the bus as slack-jawed as their conductor, and Harry shifted uneasily.
"Take -er away Ern." The conductor called to the driver through the glass.
"Yeah take -er away Ernie. Fasten yer safety belts, clench yer buttocks, it's going to be bumpy ride!" The shrunken head next to the driver yelled out and he bus pulled away at high speed, racing through the streets of London, faster than any muggle transport.
As the bus pulled up in front of the Leaky Cauldron, Harry and Sirius made their way off, unsteadily, thanking the Knight Bus crew as they stepped onto solid ground.
Harry looked at Sirius and nodded, before the pair walked confidently into the pub, and through to the entrance for the Alley. The pub patrons all followed the pair with their eyes, shocked at the reappearance of the man they once feared so much.
Sirius tapped his wand on the necessary bricks to open the entrance to the Alley and Harry stared in awe once again. No matter how much he saw it, magic never failed to amaze him, especially now, with his future looking brighter, with the prospect of a family and new horizons, everything seemed even more incredible to him.
Once the bricks had finished moving away, the pair stepped into the bright alley, the shops bustling as always with students new and old preparing for the upcoming year. As they walked through the crowd to Gringotts, the other shoppers all turned to stare. They had seen in the Daily Prophet that Black had been cleared of all charges after being questioned under Veritaserum, which they all now knew he had never been before. The mass of people was all horrified to learn that the innocent man had had to suffer for thirteen years, and be on the run for another year before finally being proven innocent.
The braver members of the crowd patted the man on the back and welcomed him back into the world, and Sirius felt himself tear up at the kindness of strangers, thanking them emphatically.
Upon reaching Gringotts, Harry and Sirius were greeted by Silvertooth, the Black family account manager. He ushered the pair through the doors into the back of the bank, and into a plush office. The goblin shut the door behind the pair and gestured for them to sit, before taking his own behind the desk.
"So, Lord Black, what is it I can help you with today?" The goblin gave a toothy grin, or what appeared to be a grin, his hands resting, finger tips together on top of the papers on his desk.
"I would like to formally adopt Harry into the Black family as my son." Sirius spoke confidently, Harry's eyes widening in surprise, filling with tears.
"Merlin's hairy balls, are you serious, Sirius?" Harry choked out, his voice filled with emotion.
"Why yes, yes I am Sirius." The man grinned at his joke before turning serious again. "But in all seriousness Harry," he chuckled slightly, "I am more than serious. I want you to be my son, if that is what you want to. You should have never been left with those magic-hating muggles. You should have always been with me when your parents died, and I am sorry I wasn't there for you when you needed me most. But I am here for you now, and I want to do everything I can to give you the life you deserve, the family you deserve. If you'll have me?"
"Yes Sirius! I would love nothing more than to be your son!" Harry jumped at Sirius, hugging him tightly. He was going to have a family.
Silvertooth cleared his throat lightly to gain the wizard's attention again, handing over some of the forms from his pile.
"Here are the forms as you requested yesterday evening, Lord Black." Harry looked at the goblin in surprise, realising that this was not just some last-minute decision, the man had planned it already. "All they need is your signature in blood Heir Potter."
The boy nodded to the goblin, taking the papers and quill from Silvertooth and signing them hurriedly before passing them back, rubbing the back of his hand to help the sting of the blood quill.
"Congratulations Heir Potter-Black, you are officially the adopted son of Lord Sirius Black, and heir to the Black house as well as the Potter house. Upon your seventeenth birthday you will receive your Potter inheritance and upon Lord Black's death, or sooner if he so chooses, you will receive your Black inheritance." Silvertooth explained. "What is next on the agenda?"
"Whilst we are here I would like to set up a trust fund for Harry under the Black accounts with 5000 Galleons to begin, to be automatically topped up once it gets below 1500 Galleons." Sirius spoke thoughtfully.
Silvertooth nodded, before leaving the room to speak to another goblin. He returned a moment later with a small pouch and a gold card. "This money pouch and Gold card are for you Heir Potter-Black. The pouch is for smaller purchases, ideally no more than 50 Galleons, and the card is for larger purchases."
Harry took the pouch and card thanking the goblin and his new father, and the two wizards stood to leave. They bowed to the goblin who inclined his head back.
"Oh also, if you could Silvertooth, I'd like you to have a look at the Potter accounts and see where we stand with those?" Sirius asked the goblin.
"Consider it done Lord Black. May your gold flow like a river and your enemies flee before you." Silvertooth inclined his head once more.
"And may your vaults overflow and your enemies cower at your feet, Master Goblin." Sirius bowed once more, Harry following suit, before they stepped out of the office and left the bank.
After a brief pit stop for lunch the two made their way back through the Alley towards Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions. The door chimed as they walked in and the plump, elderly lady sorting through fabrics turned to greet them.
"Welcome Lord Black, it has been a while." She hid her shock well and moved closer to the pair. "What may I help you with today?"
"Madam," Sirius bent to place kiss on the witch's hand, "I require a full new wardrobe for myself, and Harry here needs a full new set of school robes, as well as a wardrobe befitting Heir Potter-Black."
"Of course Lord Black, I can measure you both today and send the wardrobes later with full sets of: undergarments, socks, shoes, shirts, trousers, casual robes, semi-formal robes, formal robes and accessories, with the necessary house colours." The lady gestured for them to stand in front of the mirrors before a magical measuring tape zipped about the room measuring them as an enchanted quill wrote it all down.
"Thank you, Madam. Please may we take a set of clothes each now, and a robe for my Heir." Sirius smiled charmingly at the lady as the tape measure floated about his body.
"Yes, Lord Black, that will just take ten minutes." Madam Malkin moved off to begin the clothes as the two wizards perused the fabrics, picking some out as additions to the expected House robe materials and colours.
Ten minutes later the wizards stepped back into the Alley, in fresh clothes, having paid for their purchases and with the promise of the rest of their order being delivered in three days, in time for the pair to start at Hogwarts.
The next two hours was spent purchasing the rest of the school items needed, before they returned to Grimmauld Place.
