Rose isn't sure how long she's been sitting in the bathroom connected to her room on the TARDIS. She doesn't know what to believe. It wasn't supposed to be possible. The two very visible pink lines on the test in her hand say differently.
They had talked about it before. He said that it wasn't possible for a human and a timelord to create offspring naturally. Well technically he said nearly impossible, and Rose should have known by now that the Doctor takes impossible as a challenge.
She had been feeling nausea for nearly a week now. She mentioned it to her mate Shireen when she visited her the other day. Shireen said, "You probably got yourself knocked up. If I was travelin' with him, last thing on my mind would be protection too." She told Shireen there's no way that could be it. That afternoon she went to the shop with her mum and the Doctor. Her mum was getting items to make dinner and she excused herself to go to the loo. Instead she circled back to the health section and purchased a pregnancy test. The girl behind the counter looked oddly at her when she refused a bag and put the test in her inner jacket pocket. She quickly caught back up to her mum and the Doctor.
From outside the bathroom door, the Doctor says, "Rose? Are you alright? You've been in there for ages."
Rose thought, 'How do I tell him?'. She says, "I'm ok. Be out…." The door opens, the Doctor looks in. First at Rose, then to the pregnancy test in her hand. He is silent.
After a moment he takes the test out of her hand and studies it. She stands wanting to grab it back. He says, "That's impossible."
She says, "Maybe it's wrong." She can't meet his eyes.
The Doctor says, "Maybe it's not." She looks up at him. He has the biggest smile on his face. He pulls her into a tight hug.
Rose says, "You are the one who told me it wasn't possible."
The Doctor says, "It's not supposed to be. We can run tests to see how it happened."
Thirty minutes later Rose is sitting on the exam table in the med bay of the TARDIS. The Doctor scanned her, looked into her eyes, in her ears, listened to her heartbeat, and pricked her finger to get a blood sample. He'd been silent for the last fifteen minutes and that was beginning to scare her cause he never goes that long without talking.
Rose says, "Well what is it?"
The Doctor says, "You're different."
Rose says, "What d'ya mean I'm different?"
The Doctor says, "The sample I took doesn't completely match the sample the TARDIS already had of you."
Rose says, "Well it's me, I'm no imposter."
The Doctor says, "I know that. It matches you, it's just different. It's almost as if, yes that's got to be it!"
Rose says, "What?"
The Doctor says, "When you looked into the heart of the TARDIS, she changed you. Not completely just enough that it made you even more compatible with me."
Rose says, "So she changed me but what does that mean exactly?"
The Doctor happily says, "From what I can tell you're not completely human anymore. Your blood sample indicates you are now a human hybrid."
Rose says, "So what's that other part?"
The Doctor says, "Gallifreyan."
Rose says, "Does that make me like you?"
The Doctor says, "I'm not really sure, but according to these tests it's increasing your lifespan."
Rose says, "Increasing, it's still changing me?"
The Doctor says, "Seems to be, yeah.
Rose says, "So the TARDIS altered my DNA, which made me more compatible to you and now I'm pregnant." She smiles.
The Doctor says, "Yep! It's brilliant. About eight weeks according to the tests." He gets a little more serious. "That is if you want to go through with it. I won't make you if you don't want to."
Rose says, "You're kidding right? I wouldn't give this up. I never really imagined having a kid but I want to cause it's yours." The Doctor smiles really big again and pulls her into a hug. "Did you say eight weeks?"
The Doctor pulls away and says, "Yep, why?"
Rose says, "Must have been right after we left New Earth."
The Doctor says, "That would be about right. Do you want to see the baby?" The Doctor walks over to a storage room and steps inside.
Rose says, "Yeah. You got an ultrasound in there?"
The Doctor says, "Yes. The TARDIS supplies anything medically we may need." He pulls out an ultrasound machine on a cart and rolls it over. He plugs it into a monitor and turns on the machine. "Take your jeans and knickers off and get back on the table.".
Rose says, "Why do I have to be half naked?"
The Doctor says, "It's a transvaginal ultrasound." He holds up a wand. "This piece goes inside, gives it a better view this early on than a traditional ultrasound."
Rose says, "Ok." She slides her jeans and knickers off then gets back on the table."
The Doctor says, "Bring your bum to the edge." She scoots down. The Doctor pulls the stirrups out and places her feet in them. "It will probably be a little awkward."
Rose says, "Just do it." He inserts the probe into her and a moment later an image comes onto the monitor. "It's beautiful" The Doctor has the biggest smile on his face. He points out the location of the baby's head and assures her everything looks normal. He has the TARDIS record the entire ultrasound. Then he removes the probe.
The Doctor says, "You may have some minor cramping for the next few hours but nothing to worry about."
She says, "Will it be the normal 9 months like human pregnancies?"
The Doctor says, "Oh, I'm not sure. Back when the women on Gallifrey still had natural pregnancies, the gestational period was similar to humans but longer. I'll be able estimate it as he develops." Rose gets off the table to put her underwear and jeans back on.
She smiles and says, "He?"
The Doctor says, "Welll, it's still to early to tell for but I just have have a feeling." They are silent for a moment, the TARDIS hums.
She nods. "My mum's gonna kill you."
The Doctor goes pale with that realization. "Oh gods she's going to slap me so hard."
Rose says, "So the Oncoming Storm is afraid of my mum?" She laughs.
The Doctor whines, "Rose, those slaps hurt. That first time she slapped me, when I accidently brought you back 12 months too late, I thought it would send me into regenerating. This time will be much worse. I probably will regenerate." He pouts. "I really like this body. It's foxy. Who knows what the next one will look like? Could be strange, or old, or a woman. Probably still won't be ginger, might not like bananas anymore. I really hope I don't like pears. Can't stand pears."
Rose laughs. "It's ok, we don't have to tell her today."
The Doctor is momentarily relieved then says, "But you told her we'd have dinner with her tonight what if the conversation strays and one of us mentions it."
Rose sighs, "Honestly Doctor what do you think is gonna happen? You think we're just going to be talking and I'm gonna mention it like it's everyday news? Like I'm gonna say 'Mum there's this lovely bazaar on an asteroid, and the Doctor's knocked me up.'" The Doctor looks down and mumbles something. "What?"
The Doctor says, "I said, not necessarily you, I'll admit I ramble sometimes."
Rose sarcastically responds, "Really? I've never noticed." She then gives him that little smile she does with her tongue poking out just a bit.
