A/N: New characters! Or 1/2 new characters? Whatever you want to call it :)
I stood on the edge of the headboard of my bed tacking up another sketch of Henry Jr. Sighing, I hopped down to grab one more tack from my desk when I heard someone knocking on my door. The only people in my house that knock is Mary, Henry Jr, and James. Martha normally just walks in while Father just barges in.
Knock knock knock!
"Gimme a second!" I called with a tack in my mouth making it hard for me to talk.
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK!
"Geez, I said give me a second!" I called as I hopped down from my headboard.
KNOCKKNOCKKNOCKKNOCKKNOCKKNOCKKNOCKKNOCKKNOCKKNOCK-
"What?!" I whipped my door open to find a small Alex shrink away from my yelling. His fist was in the air from where he was knocking. "Alex? Why are you here?"
"Martha let me in," Alex said, dropping his hand into his pocket.
"Oh. But that doesn't explain why you are here," I pointed out.
"Do you really not know what day it is?"
"...No? Am I supposed to?" I raised one of my eyebrows.
"Why did we go to Herc's house a couple of weeks ago?"
"It's Halloween today?!" I yelled. As Alex nodded with a look of disbelief covering his face, I ran over to my closet and tore around my clothes to find my costume. I heard Alex walk over to me when I realized: I don't have my costume.
"Looking for this?" Alex held a bag with my costume in it. He was obviously holding in a laugh when I looked at him like he was a magician. "You left it at my place after we left Herc's. I kept it knowing you would probably lose it again."
"Thank you so much, Alex. You're a lifesaver." I could've sworn he blushed when I said that.
"No problem." He waved me off before shoving his hand in his pocket. "Also, Peggy wants us to be at her house an hour before everyone else for some reason."
"Okay? Why?"
"I don't know. She didn't say."
"Okay, whatever." I shrugged it off. I opened the bag and headed to my bathroom to change. Alex took the bathroom once I came out. He came out and struck a weird pose. "Come on. We don't want to keep Jazzy waiting, do we?" I laughed.
I told Father and Martha where I was going. Father wasn't drunk yet so he let me go. Alex gave a disgusted look once we were out of Father's sight. I didn't question.
While George drove and Martha in shotgun, Alex and I took the back. We talked about how weird it is to dress up for Halloween as seniors. Martha just laughed at our conversation while George would say something here and there.
I felt the car slow as we made our way up the large driveway to a mansion. "You weren't kidding when you said the Schuylers had a mansion," I mused.
"I try my best to tell the truth," Alex said, shrugging as Peggy ran out to us.
"Hihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihi!" Peggy jumped up and down in her yellow dress. She hugged us in one big group hug before grabbing our hand and dragging us inside. Angelica and Eliza stood in their costumes in the doorway shaking their heads as they gave us a small hello and apology.
We walked into the foyer, and I gaped at how large it was on the inside. I felt someone elbow me. "Ow…" I glared at the shorter person standing right next to me. He stuck his tongue out and squinted his eyes closed, making me blush. I looked down at my feet to try and cover it up.
"Come on. I already told you they lived in a mansion. Just enjoy yourself instead of standing there with a stupid look on your face." Alex said, chuckling. He grabbed my arm and pulled me towards what I assumed to be the living room.
"Our parents are out on a business trip right now, so we get the whole house to ourselves! Isn't that cool?" Peggy rambled.
"Yeah, that's cool. But why did you want us to come early?" I asked.
"Oh! I need help with my history homework," Peggy said as if it were as clear as day. Her arms were at her sides as she stood still for what seems like the first time in forever.
"Okay, Peggy. What do you not understand about your homework?" Alex said, monotone. He groaned as he followed Peggy up the grand staircase to her personal office next to her bedroom. He gave Eliza and me one last pleading look before being pulled into her office. I looked around for Angelica only to see she was in the massive kitchen opening the fridge.
"I feel bad for Alex," Eliza giggled.
"Maybe we should check on him," I joked when I heard Peggy shout.
"ALEXANDRIA! STOP MOVING!"
"Who's Alexandria?" I asked Eliza.
"Oh. Ohhhhh, nooooo," Eliza brought a hand to her mouth, holding back a laugh. "Maybe we should check on him. Last time Alexandria was here we were too late."
"Who is Alexandria?" I said while emphasizing 'who' and 'is'.
"Alexandria's here?" Angelica ran out of the kitchen and towards Peggy's office. "Alexandria! Peggy! Wait for me!"
"Can someone please tell me who Alexandria is?" I asked once more.
"Alexandria! We're coming!" Eliza grabbed my arm and led me up the stairs after Angelica.
"Eliza! Who is Alexandria?" I asked, annoyed as I almost tripped over my feet running up the stairs.
"You'll see…" Eliza said in between laughs.
As I rolled my eyes we finally made it to the top of the stairs when Eliza opened Peggy's office door. I gawked at the sight before me:
Peggy braiding Alex's hair.
Alex tied to a swivel chair with lipstick and eyeshadow on.
Angelica currently opening a bottle of nail polish while grabbing Alex's hand.
Alex broke the silence, "Help."
I laughed so hard at that moment when I asked Peggy, "This is your history homework?" And she gave me the best answer ever:
"Yes."
I laughed some more when I heard the front door open and some men yelling, "HAVE NO FEAR, LAF AND HERC ARE HERE!"
"Peggy's office!" Angelica called as she started to paint Alex's nails very hot pink. Four feet trampled the poor stairs as Laf and Herc made their way upstairs and saw the sight before them unfold.
"Alexandria! It's been too long!" Laf said as he gave Alexandria a kiss on each cheek. Alexandria pulled away from Laf's face with a disgusted look.
"Almost not long enough," Alexandria huffed. I snorted.
"Well, hello, Alexandria! My name is Laurens," I held my hand out. Alexandria glared at me with death in his (her?) eyes.
"Alexandria! I haven't seen you in a while," Herc laughed. "You should take Alex's spot and be Lin!"
"That's a great idea!" I yelled. Everyone agreed to bring Alexandria instead of Alex. Martha and George said that it was a wonderful idea.
"I hate you two," Alexandria glared at Martha and George who exchanged happy faces.
"That's why you love us," Martha responded, placing a tiny kiss on Alex's - er, Alexandria's head.
"We should head out now," Eliza said as she looked at her Rolex watch.
Agreeing, we all headed out of Peggy's office, leaving Martha and George to hand out candy to the kids who came by.
"Byeeeeeeee!" Peggy yelled as she bounded out of the front door. Alexandria kept her face hidden from anyone's view by putting his hands on his face.
"Oh, come on, Alex! It's just one night," I jabbed his side with my elbow.
"Two things: one, that hurt, and two, this is worse than you think," Alexandria huffed, rubbing her side from wear I jabbed her.
"If this makes you feel better, I'll still call you Alex," I murmured, making sure that no one could hear us.
"Really?" Alexandria looked at me with disbelief.
"Okay… maybe not Alex… what about Lexi?" I smiled at her.
"It's better than Alexandria, so… fine."
"Aww, thank you!" I hugged Lexi, not Alexandria.
Alex POV
I huffed. I hated being Alexandria. At least Laurens gave me the name Lexi -
"Aww, thank you!" Laurens hugged me. Laurens hugged me. Laurens hugged me. Laurens hugged me.
I patted his arm when he pulled away, "You're welcome?" I said more of a question than a statement.
We started our trick or treating by going next door. "TRICK OR TREAT!" Peggy yelled.
"Why hello, Schuylers! Let me guess… this was Peggy's idea?" The old woman said before making eye contact with me. "Alexandria! It's been too long!" She wrapped me in a hug as I glared at the Schuylers. Peggy stuck her tongue out at me. I returned the hug so I could flip the three sisters off without their neighbor seeing.
"Mrs. Walsheb! It has been too long!" I said when we pulled away, plastering a fake smile on my face.
When we left I yelled at the Schuyler Sisters, "Do I have to be Alexandria?"
"Yes. We haven't seen you in forever, so yes," Angelica shouted back at me.
John POV
I giggled at Alex - whoops, I mean Lexi, yelling at Angelica. Peggy linked her arm in mine and we skipped off ahead of everyone else, as we were actually enjoying ourselves. We skipped off to Burr's house, who lived a couple of streets down, and Peggy was mad.
"Why didn't you come to my house? Why aren't you even dressed in your costume? Herc, Laf, Laurens, and Alex made that especially for you!" Peggy screamed in Burr's face.
"Peggy, I don't want to go trick or treating. We're too old for - oh my god, Alex, what happened?" Burr walked out, pushing past everyone and staring at Alex with wide eyes.
"Don't even think about asking." Lexi glared at Burr.
"Meet Alexandria, Aaron!" Lafayette ran to Lexi's side and introduced Lexi to Aaron. I snorted.
"Alexandria?" Aaron looked puzzled.
"I SAID DON'T ASK!" Lexi shouted. Herc and I hung on to each other to prevent our laughs from escaping our mouths.
"This is amusing," Herc said, "she normally isn't this ticked off at everyone."
"Well, that's okay. We're still friends with her, so that's good," I laughed. Lexi glared at Herc and me.
"Maybe I should quit being your guys' friend," Lexi pointed an index finger with a hot pink fingernail at us.
"But you hate us because you love us," Herc stuck his tongue out.
"Truer words have never been spoken!" Angelica said.
Eventually, we got Burr to dress up in his costume (Peggy used more money to bribe him). We headed around the neighborhood close to the Schuyler house and had to stop for a long time for all the neighbors to catch up with Alexandria. Peggy linked her arm with mine. I saw Lafayette get sad all of a sudden when Peggy ran to me. Angelica linked her arm with Herc, and Eliza linked her arm with Lexi's. No doubt about it I had a mad look on my face. I knew this because Peggy asked me what was wrong.
"It's… nothing," I lied. I was jealous of Eliza, dammit.
"You can tell me when we get back if you want," she said, looking into my eyes with the most serious look I've seen her with.
"Promise you won't tell anyone?" I asked.
"Pinkie promise," Peggy said, holding her pinkie finger. I let a small chuckle out as I linked my pinkie finger with hers.
"Now, let's head back home!" Peggy yelled, dragging me along. I laughed, tripping over my own feet trying to keep up with her.
Alex POV
I saw Laurens and Peggy link arms and head off in front of everyone else. I sighed.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Eliza asked, linking her arm with mine. I'm still very happy that when Eliza and I broke up she still wanted to be friends because she always helps me.
"Yeah. Can I tell you when we get back to the mansion?" I asked, already knowing the answer. Eliza could never say no to helping someone.
"Of course."
"Now, let's head back home!" Peggy yelled, dragging Laurens with her. He laughed as he tripped over his feet. Does he like Peggy?
When we arrived back at the mansion, we all split up to find a bathroom to change in. Burr left before anyone could convince him to stay. Once Eliza and I were both in our normal clothes, she pulled me into her bedroom (yet before I could take the makeup off). "Now. Spill on why you looked so depressed when everyone else was having fun."
"Well-"
"Was it the Alexandria joke?" Eliza asked, bringing her hand up to her mouth.
"No, not really. I got used to that a couple of years ago. Just… please don't tell anyone this, even Angie and Pegs."
"Of course."
"I like Laurens."
"You're gay?"
"No. Bisexual."
"Close enough… wait. When Peggy linked her arm with Laurens… *gasp* you were jealous?" Eliza stared at me with her wide eyes. I just nodded, a blush creeping up on my neck and cheeks.
"Maybe," I mumbled, looking at her blue bedspread with white stripes instead of making eye contact with Eliza. I saw out of the corner of my eye her make her way over to me, arms wrapping me in a hug.
"Alexandria, Alexandria… you do know that Peggy likes someone else?"
"But Laurens could like Peggy," I pointed out as I wrapped my arms around her.
She pulled away. "I will do everything in my power to get him to like you, too," she said as she left the room.
"Eliza! Don't you dare say anything to him!" I yelled after her.
"I'm not!" She called as I chased after her. I saw Peggy run out of her room.
"Come on, Lauren!" She yanked someone out and spun him around, as I skidded to a stop. With my luck, the person crashed into me.
John POV
When I finished putting on my normal clothes, Peggy grabbed my arm and brought me into her bedroom. I sat in the same swivel chair Alex was sitting in when he was turned into Alexandria. Peggy pulled another chair up and started to braid my hair. "Okay. Why were you so depressed?"
"Pegs! I wasn't depressed!" I yelled.
"Sure looked like it," she said with a handful of hair ties in her mouth.
"Fine. So I was kind of depressed," I crossed my arms.
"But the question is why?"
"Please, please don't tell anyone this!" I said, pulling my knees to my chest.
"I won't! We already made a pinkie promise!" Peggy said, pulling my hair a little bit.
"Ow!"
"Sorry."
"It's fine… just, well…"
"Just tell me already!"
"Okay! ImayormaynotbekindofgayandIhaveacrushonAlex!"
"You're gay?" She spun me around so she and I were face to face.
"Yes," I said in a tiny voice.
"Ohhhhh myyyyy gooooosh! This is the cutest ship I have ever made!" Peggy squealed as she skipped around her very bright yellow bedroom. She hopped on her sunflower bedspread and jumped up and down squealing.
"What?"
Pegs stopped jumping up and down and stood in front of me, "You and Alex! You two look adorable together!" Her voice was loud but quiet enough to not be heard downstairs.
"You think so?" I asked, hopeful she wasn't lying to make me feel good.
"Of course! Now, a secret for a secret."
"What? You don't have to tell me a secret because I told you one," I said.
She grabbed a bottle of yellow nail polish and started painting my nails, "No. I want to tell you this. I haven't even told my sisters this. Besides Liza, obviously."
"Okay?"
"I like Lafayette."
"You do? You guys would make a great couple. Both very hyper," I laughed, remembering Lafayette's sad face when Peggy linked her arm with mine. "Now that I think about it… I think Lafayette likes you, too."
"Seriously?" She said as she finished one hand and moving to the other.
"Yes! I saw when you linked your arm with mine Lafayette saw me and looked away with a depressed look."
"Really?!" Peggy squeaked. "Ahh! This is the best day ever!"
Once Peggy was done painting my nails, she and I talked for a bit while she put makeup on me. "That's when Liza and Alex confessed they both liked each other and started dating," Peggy said as she applied a second coat of lipstick on.
"Alex and Eliza are dating?" I asked.
"Not anymore. Alex and Liza ended up losing the spark that drew them to each other and broke up. Liza was pretty upset about it until Alex said he would be happy if they could still be friends. So they are still friends," Peggy explained, closing the lipgloss. She spun me around and faced me towards a large mirror with lights surrounding it. "Whala! Beautiful!"
I snorted so hard that I had to let my laugh out. "Hello, Peggy. My name is Lauren!" I barely managed to say without laughing.
"You're beautiful! Let's go meet everyone!" She grabbed my arm and yanked me out of the swivel chair, knocking the chair over. Peggy looked out in the hall and smiled. "Come on, Lauren!" She yanked me one more time and spun me around so I was in the hallway and she was in the bedroom. She let go and I crashed into someone else in the hallway.
"Peggy!" I yelled as I attempted to stand up, "I'm sorry - Lexi?"
"Laurens?" He looked at me with laughter in his eyes. He snorted.
"No, it's Lauren," I laughed as I stood up, holding my hand out for Lexi to take. She/He chuckled and took it. We headed downstairs and found Laf and Herc both dressed up as girls courtesy of Angelica. We spent the rest of the night watching Disney movies. It was a good night.
