I never intended for there to be two chapters to Friendship and Jealousy, much less three. But it's a nice feeling when a one-shot becomes something more. So here is what is likely the final chapter of the Friendship and Jealousy trilogy (hopefully trilogy?)- and it's Dewey's time for secrets!
Huey didn't even want to see the Sonic Movie. Dewey had said it was technically a superhero movie and Huey, a superhero enthusiast, personally disagreed. But if Dewey wanted to see it then Huey would too. Why not? Maybe Huey would write a screenplay one day, and watching even the weirdest movies was supposed to be good practice for that. So he and Dewey set the date, invited Louie and Webby, got legitimate excuses from both of them, and the day of…
"Oh, you're off the hook for that movie you didn't want to see," Dewey told Huey at breakfast. Huey was gobsmacked, having scheduled his entire day around going to see this movie with Dewey.
"What do you mean?"
"I told my friend you didn't really want to go, so they agreed to go with me instead."
"A friend? What friend?"
"Wouldn't you like to know, weather boy?" Dewey smirked.
"Is it Launchpad?"
"No, Launchpad already saw it with Drake and Fenton." Huey didn't try to figure out why Darkwing Duck, Gizmoduck, and Launchpad had gone to see a kid's movie. Instead, he continued to puzzle out who was going to the movie with Dewey. Webby had turned them down because she was hanging out with Violet and Lena so all three of them were out. It could have been Louie, but it was a Thursday…
"Who is it?"
"Not telling," Dewey grinned, and darted off.
Not knowing was going to drive Huey insane, so Huey did the only thing he could think to do. He went to the only person who saw all the angles.
"Hey, Louie, I need your help…"
"What's up?" Louie asked, looking up from his phone.
"Sorry if I'm interrupting something important-"
"Scheming can wait," Louie assured.
"Okay, good. Because Dewey just blew me off for this movie we were going to see together and I just want to know why and well, who took my place."
"I thought you didn't want to go to that movie."
"I didn't! But I didn't want to be ditched either. Dewey made plans with me. He should've stuck to them."
"Maybe he just wanted to go see the movie with someone who'd actually enjoy it."
"That's fair, but he won't tell me who…"
"And so you want me to find out for you?" Louie guessed.
"Yeah… It's dumb, I'm sorry."
"Oh no, it's not dumb. In fact, I already have a plan," Louie leaned forward conspiratorially so Huey did too, "My plan, is that you go see the movie. Dewey's going to be there with his mystery friend. If he's not, then we have bigger fish to fry."
"I don't want to go see that stupid hedgehog movie by myself," Huey blurted.
Louie patted Huey's shoulder, "This whole thing has really gotten to you, huh?"
"Yeah. It feels like Dewey doesn't trust me anymore." Louie nodded, beginning to text.
"Well, Dewey's totally allowed to have his secrets but," Louie turned his phone towards Huey, "Boyd and I will go see the movie with you if you want."
"Thanks, Louie. I'm sorry you had to change your plans…"
"We're flexible," Louie said with a shrug, "I'm your brother and Boyd is your friend. If this is really bothering you, of course we'll see the stupid hedgehog movie with you."
Louie secretly liked the stupid hedgehog movie a whole lot. The found family aspect was heartwarming, the popcorn was just buttery enough, and the titular character reminded him so much of Dewey that it just made sense that Dewey had wanted to see the film. Boyd was just happy to hang out with his two best friends and Huey spent the whole time trying to see who Dewey was with. Whoever his friend was, they were wearing a hood, and the unknowns kept Huey from focusing on or enjoying the film. So much for his screenwriting career... When the credits rolled and the extra scene played, hinting at a sequel Huey would not be watching, Huey was quick to follow Dewey and his friend out of the theater.
"I knew it, I knew you'd follow me! Louie's a surprise but- oh hi, Boyd."
"Hello!"
Dewey waved and turned back to Huey, "I knew you'd be so obsessed with this secret that I could lure you into my trap!"
Gosalyn crossed her arms, "I was a trap?"
"No, you're my friend and I had a blast seeing this movie with you."
"Sure. Because it seems like you used me to make your brother jealous."
Huey burst out laughing, "I wasn't jealous!"
"You weren't? Wait. Now I'm confused. What exactly is going on here?"
Louie stepped forward, putting a hand on Dewey and Huey's shoulders while Boyd and Gosalyn introduced themselves to each other.
"I say we chalk it up to the Duck brothers enjoying a film that's fun for the whole family with some of their new friends."
"No," Dewey said, "I want to know why Huey followed me if he didn't want to see the movie and he wasn't jealous."
"Because I was worried about you! You were hiding stuff from me! What if something happened and I wasn't there to look after you? I would've blamed myself forever."
"Oh," Dewey looked at his feet, "I'm sorry. I didn't realize that this would make you worry. But you guys hid Boyd from me."
Now it was Huey and Louie's turn to look sheepish.
"This is kind of dumb, isn't it?" Gosalyn said, knocking off Huey's hat and giving Louie and Dewey affectionate noogies, "You guys are brothers and friends. Why can't we just all be friends and hang out?"
"Yeah!" Boyd cheered, "We should all be friends and hang out!"
Dewey, Huey, and Louie looked at either. It had been fun, for a little bit, having their own friends, and doing stuff without each other. But having their own lives wasn't going to go anywhere just because they stopped having secrets.
"Yeah, we should," Louie agreed and Huey nodded, picking up his hat.
"Now! Who wants to watch the Sonic Movie again?" Not a single one of the friends took Dewey up on that offer, but they left the movie together, no longer jealous or anxious about the state of their friendships.
