AN: Hi, I recently found a seemingly abandoned channel on here, and took interest in one story in particular. If the author of it contacts me, I'll stop writing it, but for now I'm just going to write. This story is going to be heavily based on Champions by Masked Demise. I found it fitting while listening to "VILLAIN," so I figured I'd put my spin on it.
There were hushed whispers that spread rumors across the world. Rumors of a large organized group hidden away in the mountains of a certain country, it varied upon where it was told. It was said that they were responsible for the insane surge of missing person cases sweeping the world. Children, adults, even a few elderly were thrown in the rumors. Whole families disappeared overnight, with naught a trace left in their own homes. There was no rhyme or reason to anyone who was taken. A daughter from the north, a father from the east, the family from west. Fear resided in the world, yet no one was able to figure out where exactly they had disappeared to. Some had given up on finding out where their loved ones had gone to, yet some persisted. The missing? They were never found as they once were, if they were found at all.
In a world on edge, being alone was something you didn't want to be. Loneliness in groups was fine, but true lonesomeness? That was frightening. Thankfully, though young, I walked with my little sister Lucy, who was blissfully young enough to not comprehend why her elder sister clung to her so closely. She was aware of the world in such a different manner, in the bright colors and the beautiful sounds of the world. I thought it unfair that she should be allowed to be so innocent, but I didn't want to take it from her. So, I held her hand as I crossed the street to our house.
I had just picked her up from daycare. With me both working and attending high school, it was hard to take care of her by myself, especially since my parents worked as well to keep us afloat. It was hard and tiring, but it was what I knew. School, work, Lu, sleep. It was a cycle that I was going to keep forever. Not that I minded too much. I was happy enough with it. I had clothes, hot food, and a warm bed to sleep in.
I opened the door, and Lucy immediately broke out of my hand, letting out a jubilant laugh as she zipped around, she moved quickly, and I could no longer see her as she ran up the stairs towards our rooms. I wasn't sure which I'd find her in later- she liked my bed, but she preferred the toys in her room.
I let out a heavy sigh as I closed the door, immediately shucking off my shoes after locking the door. I made sure the blinds were closed and the windows were safely locked. I didn't expect them to be unlocked, but one could never be certain enough. After my quick inspection, I went back to the kitchen and began cooking a simple meal for myself and Lu: spaghetti. I set some water to boil, making sure to salt it before pulling out some noodles and a can of sauce to pull it all together after the noodles had cooked. I hummed as I opened the can, only pausing when I heard the roar of a vehicle speed past my house. I paused, glancing at the water on the stove. It had just begun to bubble, and I figured it would be fine if I left it alone for just a moment. I set the can down, lid still on it, and walked to a window near the door.
I shifted the blinds just enough for me to be able to peer through them, and my eyes widened as I saw a set of vans parked just outside the door. The windows were tinted, so I had no idea how many people could be inside them. The moment a door began to open, I let the blinds fall closed and immediately ran upstairs.
"Lu!" I called out in a hushed tone. I was scared, and a feeling of dread sat in the pit of my stomach. Logically, I should have no reason to fear right now. But stress and fear compiled left no room for reason. The moment I heard a small laugh from her room, I ran straight to her. I burst into her room, finding her playing with her doll set. She looked up at me with a look of confused worry on her face.
"What's going on?" She asked quietly. "Was I too loud?" Lucy glanced at the floor, squeezing her doll. "I'm sorry."
There wasn't even a pause between her last word and the shouting that started outside our house. I nearly jumped as I heard a banging on the solid wooden door outside our house. It would last for a while yet if they were just going to kick or pound on it, but if they decided to move to the gl-
I heard a shattering of glass and I felt fear like I had never felt before.
I grabbed Lucy's hand tightly, and began to move to the hallway, dragging her with me. My plan was dangerous with people possibly already being in the house, but if it paid off, we'd be safer for it. The scene was both so similar and so different from earlier. "We're going to play a game, okay Lu?" I didn't check to see if she agreed. I moved down the hall, and pulled on the stairs to the attic, pulling them down quickly, which caused a large bang. I winced, and immediately pushed Lucy towards the stairs. "We're gonna play hide and seek, but we have to be quiet," I whispered to her. I heard someone beginning to run up the stairs, so I started climbing up after her. "People are already searching so we need to find a hiding spot, okay?"
The little girl sped up the retractable stairs, seemingly excited by the prospect of hide and seek. I moved behind her, then began pulling on the stairs, trying to force them up. They moved slowly at first, but I got them up eventually. This spot alone wouldn't last long I knew. They had heard the stairs open. It wouldn't be long until whoever was searching for us found us up here. I looked around. Lu seemed lost in the dusty attic- we rarely came up here, and she had never been. There wasn't much up here though, so she largely looked confused. I wandered the room briefly, eventually ending up at a window. It was a stretch, but…
I looked over to Lucy and motioned for her to come over to me. She quickly walked over, stomping on the floor as she did so. Worried, I put a finger over my lips to get her quieter. It seemed to work, and she began to tiptoe over to me. I pushed the window open, taking more time with it than I had with the stairs. It came to fruition, and the window opened quietly, but slowly. When it had opened enough for Lucy to fit through it, I lifted her up and pushed her through. She got on her knees and began to crawl along the roof. "Why are we…?" She stopped talking as I gave her a gentle but quiet "shhh."
I finished opening it, and pulled myself through. The roof had a steep slope, and i was almost surprised that Lucy hadn't managed to fall off of it when I put her outside. She seemed giddy, but I was anything but. We were safe for the moment, but we had nowhere left to run. The only idea I had left was to move to the farthest section of the roof from the van and lay down. The only problem I had with that was the full strength of the sun beating down on both me and Lucy would be miserable, even if it kept us alive. The other downside would be my inability to keep an eye on the vehicles. I worried that we had already been spotted though. I felt despair, and squeezed Lu close to me.
"Are you okay?" She asked me. "I'm starting to get scared."
I didn't bother to respond, simply squeezed tighter. "Quiet," I whispered.
I don't know how long we stayed on the roof, myself waiting in quiet anticipation of being caught and Lucy in growing boredom. After a long while, I eventually moved, peeking to see what had happened to the vans. To my surprise- and worry, they were still there, and sitting on the hood of one of the vans was a woman, with a smug look, and a gun in her hand. I didn't even have time to cry out to Lucy before I was struck with a dart and I began to slip. I slipped off the roof, and I slipped into a long, long sleep.
